We also chat to Susie Bovill at Home-Start where she talks about helping parents give their children the best possible start in life.

Helping parents give their children the best possible start in life Home-Start Goole & District offers befriending support along with practical and emotional advice in the homes of families who are having difficulties managing parenting for a variety of different reasons Home-Start is a national organisation founded in Leicester in 1973. The Goole scheme was launched in 1995 by founder Gill Pirt which helps families in Goole, Selby and surrounding villages to give their children the best start in life.

The support their volunteers give is nonjudgemental, compassionate, and confidential,

who work with you to build on your strengths and give you the support that you tell us you need.

Scheme Manager and Senior Family Support Organiser, Susie Bovill, told Our Goole: “HomeStart provides support for families when they need it the most. This can be due to anything including financial issues, low level mental health, isolation, routines and organising family life or simply because parenting is really hard and doesn’t come with a manual. We have 30 fully trained home-visiting volunteers, meaning each family is matched with their own volunteer who visits the family for a couple of hours a week.

“In addition to our home-visiting and group support, we offer trips and events during school holidays which are for the whole family. Families are increasingly reporting that the cost-of-living crisis prevents them from being able to do family activities and outings and that us providing them makes such a difference and gives them the opportunity to have fun family times together.

“This year we would like to recruit more volunteers to meet the currently very high amount of referrals we are receiving. We are also hoping to recruit new Trustees, whose role it is to oversee the management of the scheme”.

Devolution: Time for the public to have their say People across Hull and East Yorkshire can now have their say on devolution proposals for the region East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hull City Council have today launched an eight-week consultation on the proposal to create a Hull and East Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA), led by a directly elected mayor.

“But we need you, our residents, to get involved and come on this journey with us.

The leaders of both councils are urging all residents, businesses and other organisations to read the proposal and give their feedback.

From now until 27 February, people can read the devolution proposal and give their feedback on each part of the deal at heydevolution.com.

Councillor Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “It’s really important that people take part in this consultation and have their say.

“This deal gets us out there on the national and international stage.

“So, today I am asking everyone across the region to take part in this consultation, back the deal, and help shape the future of Hull and East Yorkshire.”

Residents can also visit any East Riding library, or any Hull library or customer service centre, where they can get help completing the survey using a computer or completing the questionnaire on paper.

E PERSPECTIVE: Humberside Police has launched a brand-new campaign to encourage more people - with a desire to make a difference and give something back to the community - to join their Special Constabulary The Special Constables provide a crucial service across the whole of our Humberside Police force area. They have the same powers and responsibilities as full- and part-time paid officers.

The Special Constabulary is made up of like-minded people who run towards danger, just like our regular officers.

The role means that no two days are the same, from arresting wanted people, patrolling community events to attending emergency incidents.

Leading the campaign is Deputy Chief Constable David Marshall, who is extremely passionate about our Special Constabulary, and dedicated to increase numbers of long-term, career volunteers across our force. He said: “Our Special Constable volunteers come from all walks of life, bringing a whole host of different skills and life experiences to the force.

“That being said, they all have something in common, and that’s to do something meaningful, protect the most vulnerable, make a difference and ultimately give something back to the community.

“Nationally, over the last few years, the Special Constabulary has experienced a massive downturn in officers as many have sought permanent careers as police officers through the Government’s Police Officer Uplift Programme. This shows that many see the benefits of the Special Constabulary in developing

their personal skills as well for some a stepping stone before they move into regular, paid policing.

“Whilst joining us in this capacity is a fantastic opportunity to gain a real-world insight into what it’s like to be a Police Officer, we’re also looking for people who want to forge a long-term career with us as a Special Constable too.”

Special Constables have a duty to work a minimum of 16 hours a month, many doing significantly more.

Joining as a Special Constable also means you can receive a significant discount on your local council tax as well as benefits of Blue Light discounts on thousands of stores, restaurants, holidays and more.

Special Constabulary Chief Officer John Philip added: “Initial classroom training takes around three months, and then you’ll be working alongside experienced regular officers and Special Constables as you work through on-the-job training and assessments, giving you all the skills and abilities needed to become a successful Special Constable.

“Policing is unpredictable, no two days are the same, and you never know where your shifts will take you. We’re looking for people with a real sense of comradeship, a team player, and someone who has a relentless need to make a difference, protect, and serve.”

Howden Social Club celebrates its 105th Birthday Howden Social Club was formerly known as Howden Working Men’s Club when it opened its doors back in January 1919, meaning this January was their 105th birthday – what an achievement

Howden Working Men’s Club became a Social Club after Covid to try and shake off the old working men’s club image and to welcome everyone. The club has three trustees, a chairman, secretary, treasurer and committee members in addition to its regular hard-working bar staff.

Helen Boldan, a member on the committee since August 2022 told Our Goole: “The club has always held a special place in my heart as my grandparents were stewards back in the 1920s and again in the late 1950s. I joined to help support the club with the vast behindthe-scenes work that goes on daily just to keep the club running.

“The club’s popularity is increasing with our music acts (tribute acts, local bands and singers), and we are trying to accommodate different

tastes and eras. We have DJ nights which include regular Motown & Northern Soul evenings.

As well as children’s discos, Halloween and Christmas-themed events – we like to ensure we have a variety of family friendly events.

“We currently have two pool teams on a Tuesday and Wednesday, two darts teams on a Wednesday, a bi-monthly quiz on a Thursday and bingo and quiz night every Sunday.

“This year we are trying to focus and promote memberships, as these funds go into maintaining the building and keeping it open for everyone to enjoy – memberships are £7.50 for adults or £5 for pensioners. We will also be continuing to offer a good night out with 8090% of events free to our members, and finally,

our aim is of course to stay open another 105 years.”

Howden Social Club, open Tuesday to Sunday, can be booked for private parties and holds up to 100 people in the concert room.
