East Yorkshire stage of tour of britain announced The East Yorkshire stage route for the Tour of Britain cycle race has been revealed and Goole kicks things off The third stage of the 2023 race, which will take place on Tuesday 5 September, will start from the pedestrianised area on Boothferry Road in Goole and will pass through major towns including Howden, Market Weighton, Driffield, Bridlington and Hornsea before heading to the finish line near the racecourse on Beverley Westwood.

The 153.8km stage will also see over 100 of the world’s leading cyclists, including Olympic, world and Tour de France champions, pass through a number of towns and villages including Foggathorpe, Holme on Spalding Moor, Middleton on the Wolds, North Dalton, Langtoft, Octon, Rudston, Skipsea, Withernwick and Long Riston.

There will be two King of the Mountains climbs, located at Towthorpe Lane, near Market Page 6

Weighton, which will be 39km into the stage while the second climb will take place on the B1249 Scarborough Road at Langtoft at 74km.

The sprint section of the race will be at 109km on the B1242 Hornsea Road, Skipsea.

This will be the first time that East Yorkshire has played host to an entire stage of the Tour of Britain although the area is no stranger to international cycle races having previously hosted a number of stage starts in Beverley and Bridlington for recent Tour de Yorkshire events, as well as a UCI paracycling event in 2019.

The Tour of Britain has become a cornerstone of the UK sporting calendar since its return in 2004 and this year’s event will start in Greater Manchester on Sunday, 3 September and finish in South Wales on Sunday, 10 September.

Live flag-to-flag coverage of every stage, as well as a daily highlights show, will be broadcast by ITV4 while international coverage will be available in over 150 countries courtesy of Eurosport and GCN+.

Councillor Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “I’m really looking forward to stage three of the Tour of Britain and it’s great to see the route will take in some of our towns and

villages that have not been on the route for previous Tour de Yorkshire events.

“With the number of visitors who come to the area to watch the race, it’s sure to give the local economy a boost.”

E PERSPECTIVE: This month, Goole policing team talks to us about how it has been involved in a force-wide operation that has helped seize over £2million worth of cannabis Twenty-nine people have been arrested, and 25 of those subsequently charged and remanded after officers seized an estimated £2,160,200 worth of cannabis in our area as a part of a national operation involving all 43 police forces to dismantle cannabis farms operated by organised crime groups across the country.

Since Thursday 1 June, officers have been working with forces across the country to target and tackle the gangs operating in our area.

As a part of the co-ordinated response, officers executed warrants at 28 properties in a number of locations across the force area including: • Moorwell Road, Fox Street, Sheffield Street, Doncaster Road, Marlowe Road, Grange Lane South, Queen Street in Scunthorpe.

• Brookyln Street, Louie Street, Plane Street, Croyland Avenue, Hessle Road, York Street, Thoresby Street, Ryde Avenue, Park Road in Hull.

• Dudley Street and Castle Street, Grimsby.

• Carlisle Street, Goole and Stamford Bridge in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Whilst searching the properties during the monthlong intensification period, officers recovered 4,321 cannabis plants of varying yield, weapons including a friction lock baton, handmade spear

and an air rifle.

Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Gawthorpe said: “This has been a vast operation, taking months in the planning and gathering of intelligence and information.

“Tackling drug crimes within the Humberside force area is a priority for us as it has a big impact on local communities, anti-social and disruptive behaviour often follows drug use and dealing.

“The community impact this type of offending has is the reason we will continue to do everything we can to disrupt these criminal networks, removing them, and the drugs they supply and distribute, from our streets.

“Importantly the operation also opened windows of opportunity for us together with the wider Community Safety Partnership to identify and safeguard vulnerable members of the community targeted by these gangs”.
