The clocks have gone forward, the nights are getting lighter, and the days should start to get warmer.

This month, we chat to Kormak and Charlie Appleton, who are competing in the Edinburgh Marathon to raise money for Dogs Trust in memory of their dog Rex.

Groundwork Yorkshire’s Green Skills training course will be running in Goole this month (April)and June.

The free course, funded by Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner, is bespoke to Groundwork.

It offers a chance for those aged 16 and over to gain experience and qualifications in horticulture and grounds management.

The course aims to help people back in to work with an opportunity to gain new or build on existing skills.

Participants will work in parks and green spaces across Goole with Groundwork Yorkshire’s qualified horticulture tutors to improve green areas, providing safer spaces and reducing the perception of crime.

Look again – is someone you know being exploited?

This month, Goole Policing team has launched its ‘Look Again’ child sexual and criminal exploitation campaign to align with Child Exploitation Awareness Day and the national initiative Operation Makesafe

“Local and national evidence shows that child exploitation can take place in hotels, pubs, takeaways, places licensed to sell alcohol, and exploiters or those involved are also more likely to use taxi firms to travel to and from these different places.”

POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

The campaign is focused around getting members of the public and local businesses to ‘look again’ at some situations which, at first glance, may appear to be completely normal.

Do you notice something about someone’s relationship that might be unhealthy or inappropriate? Does someone appear to be acting more distant and showing signs of being controlled? Do you see the same group of teenagers regularly going missing or skipping school? There are many questions we can ask, and this campaign will help you spot the signs of exploitation in many different circumstances.

They’ve aligned the campaign with the national Operation Makesafe to focus on making sure that people working in specific business sectors are aware of the early warning signs of child exploitation, and then know how and what to report to the police.

Local and national evidence shows that child exploitation can take place in hotels, pubs, takeaways, places licensed to sell alcohol, and exploiters or those involved are also more likely to use taxi firms to travel to and from these different places.

Leading the campaign is Inspector Nathan Reuben from our Protecting Vulnerable People Unit responsible for the Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking, and Child Sexual Exploitation teams. He said: “It is vital that we raise awareness amongst key local businesses as well as members of the public so they can learn what to look out for, spot the signs, and ultimately help safeguard young people.

“We want to give our communities the confidence to report their concerns or suspicions to us, knowing that they will be taken seriously, and we will do everything

we can to disrupt and deter potential exploiters, and prevent young people from being exploited in the first place.

“Child Sexual Exploitation is hard to identify because it often happens behind closed doors. Victims and suspects do not fit any particular stereotype, but there are indicators and behaviours that members of the public, professionals, family members or friends might spot.

“A child who is being exploited might not recognise themselves as a victim. They might go missing from home or education, or be attending hotels, unfamiliar locations, or making unusual journeys that are not explained. We are asking people to be curious about why someone might be missing from the place they should be.

“Some young people are often criminalised, and we want to use this campaign to highlight that there are young people in the Humberside area who are vulnerable victims and need safeguarding.

“It is crucial that we work together with our partners and support networks to identify, disrupt, and remove the opportunity for potential perpetrators of both sexual and criminal exploiters to offend. We will do everything in our power to investigate, prosecute and seek justice for victims and their families.”

Child sexual exploitation involves situations, contexts, or relationships in which a person under 18 is given something, such as food, accommodation, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, affection, gifts, or money in return for performing sexual activities or having sexual activities performed on them. It can also involve violence, coercion, and intimidation, with threats of physical harm or humiliation.

Local couple taking on Edinburgh Marathon in memory of their dog Rex

Kormak and Charlie Appleton are set to compete in the Edinburgh Marathon this May to raise money for Dogs Trust

Kormak and Charlie first met Rex at Dogs Trust back in 2019 - he’d had a rough start to life, and the abuse he suffered as a puppy left him with brain damage. His brain damage affected him in a lot of different ways – he had a head tilt, he was deaf, he was uncoordinated and incredibly distrustful of strangers. The first time they met him he wouldn’t even come over and say hello, and they had to go to Manchester several times a week for a month to build up enough trust so that they could finally bring him home. For four years Kormak and Charlie did their absolute best to give Rex the life they knew he deserved. He loved any kind of transport so they took him on steam trains, boats, buses – they tried to make his life as packed with new experiences as possible.

A few days before Christmas in 2023, they unexpectedly had to say goodbye to Rex – and their world shattered. They decided that the best way to thank Rex for the best four years of their lives would

be to try and raise some money for the charity that brought him into their lives, and worked with us when so many others would have given up on him.

They are now taking on the massive challenge of running the Edinburgh Marathon, and trying to raise as much money as possible for Dogs Trust.

Charlie told Our Goole: “I’m sure a lot of people on Manuel Street in Goole will remember him as ‘the dog in the window’. He loved standing in our upstairs window and watching the various events in the street. Often when we would take him out on walks we would be stopped by children who waved to him every morning on their way to school asking if they could pet him.

“Although the scars of his start in life never fully left him, Dogs Trust were there for us every step of the way. Anytime we were concerned about unusual behaviour there was a behaviourist at the end of the phone to work with us, and they even came out to our house to

work with us and Rex in his home environment to make sure he was as happy and relaxed as he possibly could be. I can’t thank them enough for the time, energy and dedication the staff gave us to support us in caring for Rex.

“Dogs Trust is an absolutely fantastic charity - I hope that by trying to raise a bit of money we can help them carry on the incredible work they do and give more dogs a second, third, fourth, fifth chance at life.

“Kormak had never even run a 5k before undertaking this challenge – so it’s been a massive effort to go from couch to marathon in just under five months – but we always said we would do anything for our boy, so this is just putting our money where our mouth is!”

Advice from Rightmove’s head of data analysis is that when properties are priced too high at the out set they are more likely to ultimately achieve a lower price.
