Discover Theatre Squad UK’s impact in Doncaster Theatre Squad is about much more than dance and performance - it provides adults in Doncaster with a welcoming, inclusive and safe space where they can meet new people, build friendships and feel part of a community Theatre Squad UK was founded in Doncaster just over three years ago by Nathan Kennedy with a simple aim: to give adults a welcoming place to dance, meet people and feel part of something. Since then, it has evolved into a wide-ranging social and creative community that is changing how community is seen and experienced in modern life. Nathan has always had a love of dance - a passion that has taken him around the world. However, when he looked at what was available locally, he felt there was a gap in Doncaster for a community group where adults could come together, socialise, attend events and enjoy dance in a welcoming environment.
own, creating a permanent home and dedicated base. They have a range of meet-ups that run throughout the year at a range of locations. These are advertised on their social media sites and on the Theatre Squad UK Community app. Dance classes - every Tuesday Beginner open style - 6.30pm to 7.30pm For anyone 18+ who loves to dance! Whether new, returning, or just wanting to have fun, this class is for you. Improvers/intermediate level up 7.45pm - 9pm Ready to level up? Perfect for those who know the basics and want to improve.
Friendships have formed, confidence has grown, and members often describe Theatre Squad UK as something they look forward to each week.
Robyn Priestnall, event organiser at Theatre Squad UK told Doncaster Echo: “Being able to help create opportunities for other members to come together, make memories and enjoy new experiences is something I am incredibly proud to be part of. Some events which I help to organise are picnics, celebration nights out, musical trips as well as helping to organise our Glitz and Glam Ball.
Theatre Squad is currently based temporarily at Woodfield Social Club in Balby while the group continues its search for a suitable dance studio. The long-term aim is to secure a building of its
“I joined the group just over three years ago when it was only just starting out. I remember going to my first class on my own, not really knowing what to expect, but I’ve been hooked ever since.
Theatre Squad is open to adults from all walks of life, many of whom share a love of dance, theatre, and creativity, as well as a desire for genuine connection.

“I’ve now achieved my 100-class milestone T-shirt and I’m already working towards my 150-class milestone. It’s something I’m really proud of and shows just how much Theatre Squad has become part of my life.” Founder Nathan Kennedy told Doncaster Echo: “Theatre Squad UK isn’t just about dance or theatre; it’s about people building something together. Everyone who joins helps shape the community. We’re proud of what’s been created in Doncaster and excited about where it’s heading next.” Adults who want to be more social, try something creative, or become part of a welcoming and evolving community can join the Theatre Squad UK Community App, where all events, meet-ups and opportunities are shared. Doncaster chosen for Baton of Hope Tour 2027 Baton of Hope Tour 2027 is the third UK tour of the Baton of Hope, a national suicide-prevention initiative created to open up conversations around suicide and encourage real change The Baton travels through communities across the UK, carried by people with their own stories and connections to suicide prevention, while bringing together charities, organisations, businesses and local people. More than 60 towns, cities and regions applied to be part of Tour27, with Doncaster selected as one of 20 locations for 2027. Doncaster Echo spoke to Charlotte Lister, CSR & Partnerships Manager for the Crown Bawtry Collection, which includes Crown Hotel Bawtry, Bawtry Hall and Rossington Hall. Why is this important to Doncaster? Bringing the Baton of Hope to Doncaster gives us an incredible opportunity to put suicide prevention firmly on the local agenda and, most importantly, to start conversations that could genuinely save lives. It isn’t intended to be something that simply arrives in Doncaster for one day and disappears again; we want to use the build-up to the tour to connect organisations, businesses and communities and create a lasting legacy. Doncaster has such a strong sense of community, and I want Tour27 to show what can happen when that community comes together behind something that really matters. When will Tour27 take place? The Baton of Hope Tour27 will take place in September or October 2027, with Doncaster’s
Page 12
exact date to be confirmed as the national tour plans develop. However, the journey starts much sooner, with applications to become a Baton Bearer opening in September 2026, giving people across Doncaster and the surrounding area the opportunity to apply to carry the Baton. Between now and the tour arriving in 2027, we’ll be working with local businesses, charities, organisations and communities to build the programme and make Doncaster’s involvement something really special. What charity is this helping? Tour27 is organised by Baton of Hope UK, a suicide-prevention charity and movement founded by Mike McCarthy and Steve Phillip after both lost sons to suicide. Its work is about changing the way we talk about suicide, reducing stigma, encouraging people to have potentially life-saving conversations and campaigning for greater action around suicide prevention. The tour also provides an opportunity to showcase and connect people with the charities, services and organisations already providing support within their own communities. Why is this important to you? Suicide prevention is incredibly personal to me because I have experienced the devastating impact of losing my cousin to suicide, so I know that behind every statistic is a person, a family and a circle of people whose lives are changed forever.
Issue 046 - Oct/Nov 2026
I was privileged to be a Baton Bearer during the 2025 tour, and that experience stayed with me. Afterwards, I knew I wanted to do more than carry the Baton for one part of its journey. Since then I have continued fundraising, including raising more than £3,000 for the Samaritans, completed mentalhealth training and worked to raise awareness, so being trusted to lead Doncaster as Project Lead for Tour27 feels like the next chapter of something that means an enormous amount to me.
individuals across Doncaster to feel that Tour27 belongs to them too and that there is a way for everyone to get involved. I carried the Baton in 2025, and in 2027 I’ll have the privilege of helping to bring it to Doncaster.
If everything we do between now and then encourages even one person to speak up, ask for help or check in on somebody they’re worried about, then it will have achieved something incredibly important.
Anything else you would like to add? We want businesses, charities, schools, community groups, public-sector organisations and Doncaster Echo is brought to you by CreateTVT. Tel. 01302 897747
