Doncaster charity seeks handy people to volunteer!

The Doncaster branch of a 60-year-old charity, which provides a vital service for local disabled people, has warned that unless it gets more skilled people volunteering, it may be forced to close

REMAP is a UK-wide charity which provides custom-made equipment free of charge for disabled people.

This can be to help with anything from eating and drinking and getting around, to accessing sports and hobbies. This work is made possible thanks to the skills and dedication of its volunteers to design and build equipment, many of whom are engineers or have specialist skills such as carpentry or metalwork.

However, since the pandemic, the number of volunteers at REMAP’s Doncaster branch has dwindled and it now relies heavily on a small number of mostly older volunteers, and with several of them looking to stand down, the future of its services is now in doubt.

The branch Chair, Brian Downes, told Doncaster Echo: “The engineering landscape has changed drastically

over the years. The reduction in manufacturing and in turn the reduced apprenticeships over 40 years or more has led to a reduced pool of skills and those engineers with a need for their own workshop reduces the ‘pool’ even further.”

Their solutions are predominantly mechanically based but occasionally require electrical/electronic input. They are particularly short of engineers with metal working skills and facilities – or even help from companies that could provide a facility and manufacture bits and pieces to their drawings.

They are a small group of engineers that needs younger people to sustain their voluntary work. Over the years engineers have retired, and this means that the pressure on the time of those remaining is getting too great. Younger engineers with their own facilities

are getting rarer due to the change in the industrial landscape and industrial training. There is a list of various skills, but the engineers need their own workshops or facilities or access to facilities as the charity does not have their own premises.

They are looking for anyone with engineering or practical skills to come forward and help the people of Doncaster. Their work literally changes the lives of those they support, giving them increased independence, improved quality of life and greater confidence.

They sometimes need two engineers working together on a project.

The work they do can be so varied, including:-

• Modifying a client’s exercise bike so he could use it as part of his recovery from a stroke,

• A bespoke board so someone could safely transfer from a car into their wheelchair,

• A modified seat lift has been fitted into a narrowboat for a client who had to have a leg amputated and could no longer get between decks.

• Various modifications to walking frames.

• Manufactured numerous single-handed Zimmers and trolleys for stroke victims.

Their work really does vary from the fairly simple, to extremely complex, but everything they do makes a huge difference.

REMAP Doncaster are particularly looking for volunteers with the following skills or combination of skills:

• Metal working skills and machinery

• Wood working skills and machinery

• Welding facilities

• Problem-solving skills are also important

If you think you have what it takes and want to give something back to your community, please get in touch at RemapDoncaster@gmail.com.

• REMAP is a unique national charity founded in 1964. It transforms the lives of around 3,000 disabled people each year by providing them with bespoke equipment which meets their individual needs and consists of 65 local panels across the UK and has a network of 800 volunteers. They collectively spend an estimated 50,000 hours working on projects each year.

Local man launches new film on Amazon Prime

Richard Fysh, filmmaker, writer and actor, originally from Rossington, and now living in the USA, is attempting to forge his own path in a creative career with the launch of 7 Kills, 3 Songs & a Banana

7 Kills, 3 Songs & a Banana is an American culture shock film that is truly unlike any other. Horror, satire, musical numbers, LGBT+ characters, comic violence and sex, and yes, at least one banana.

Richard told Doncaster Echo: “I went over there and you expect a lot of weird stuff, but then there’s other strange things you can never really see coming that take you off guard.

“Things that to everyone there are normal, but to me and I suppose most foreigners are very odd, so I dialled it all up a bit and threw it into the film.

“It’s got a lot of sharp dialogue and there’s social commentary about current behavioural trends, political extremes and so on.

“Genre wise, it’s a bit of a Frankenstein’s monster, but I think it all comes together well and it’s getting some good reactions. It’s knowingly low budget and that becomes a strength in a way. There’s things that look rough around the edges, but we lean into that and make fun of ourselves at the same time, almost making that part of the charm. Unlike a lot of low budget films you see, this isn’t a cheap copy of a big budget film and it’s not one of those so bad it’s good films, but rather I’d say it’s so cheap, it’s valuable. I can honestly say this is unlike anything else you’ll see. I think that’s its biggest strength.

“I’m very proud that, for all our challenges, we’ve got some really good drama in there as well; these are decent actors. The characters are also the types of people who don’t often get to be the heroes in film.

“It was made with next to no money, about £2,000. The real challenge with no-budget films isn’t making them, it’s making people aware of them. Hollywood movies have huge marketing budgets. I’ve got to rely on word of mouth.

“I love and have always loved films. I used to go to the Odeon every week growing up. Younger readers won’t even know there was an Odeon cinema in town until 2008, but it was a beautiful old tieredseat theatre that for many years was this wonderful auditorium and a great place to watch films.”

Richard has another smaller feature-length film called What You Can’t Promise, which he made in England in 2021 costing just £500. He wrote, directed, edited and co-starred in it. This is a mysterious romance, drama and horror with a single location and two actors.

He has made multiple shorts including the Doncaster-set film The Lodger in 2017, which is also on Amazon.

Richard also hosts a podcast called ‘Making it in Movie Making’, which is an interview show. He talks to writers, directors, actors about how they are doing it. Some well-known, some less so.

Richard told Doncaster Echo: “I am writing three more feature films then I will decide which one to run with when they have finished scripts. One of them is very Doncaster, so let’s see, maybe I’ll be back next year to helm that one.”
