Empowering the community one step at a time with Active Independence
A user-led organisation with services shaped and delivered by disabled people for disabled people
Active Independence was founded in 2003 as a grassroots self-help group. It has grown with the core principle of developing services that directly respond to the needs of local disabled people to promote independence and choice.
While the group’s work began with advocacy and financial stability, it expanded after the Covid pandemic to combat social isolation
by launching a pilot quilting group following feedback from members.
The group has since developed a thriving network of inclusive craft and activity groups in Doncaster and Rotherham to focus on mental wellbeing and resilience.
Active Independence empowers the local disabled community by providing essential advocacy that helps individuals secure financial stability, housing, and personal care they need to live independently.
Beyond practical support, the group also runs “Art of Wellbeing” programme. These sessions are designed to reduce isolation and build mental resilience through shared creativity. They are uniquely inclusive, welcoming not only disabled people, but personal assistants (PAs) and carers to foster a supportive, integrated community where everyone can thrive together.
It runs a bi-weekly “Artful Balance” craft session at Edenthorpe and weekly inclusive cycling at the Doncaster Dome, as well as a new weekly inclusive yoga session on Thursday mornings, plus a series of popular community day trips
including three barge excursions and its annual bus trip.
These diverse activities are designed to be accessible to all, providing regular opportunities for disabled people, personal assistants, and carers to connect and stay active across the city.
