Meet Miss S It’s January. We’ve all had an indulgent month and now it’s time to get back into shape. For most, people, their new year’s resolution is to get fitter and shed a few pounds. Joining a weight-loss group can be a great way to encourage you to keep on track as well as meet new friends, as Brittany Burton found out Inspirational 19-year-old, Brittany Burton, has been awarded Slimming World Scawthorpe’s Miss Slinky 2018. Brittany has lost over five stone this year and is delighted with her new figure! Brittany told Doncaster Echo: “I still can’t believe what I have been able to achieve for myself. Nobody thought I would be able to stick at it as most diets last a few weeks. But I now look in the mirror each morning still shocked that in just a year I have been able to challenge myself and to

try to build my confidence through my weight-loss journey. “I hit a point in my life where I didn’t want to be ‘the fat one’ and I was sad with how I looked and felt around people. I knew enough was enough and something had to be done.” Brittany now loves wearing clothes she never thought she’d be able to pull off and found that some clothes were even too big for her. She owes her transformation to Slimming World.

Slinky 2018 Brittany adds: “I can now fit into tiny clothes and wear a bikini. I can walk into a shop that has clothes that fit me or try something on and it be too big! It really is an amazing feeling and being able to feel confident is great as it is something I have lacked in the past so it is something new to me. “There were many times when I started doing Slimming World that I wanted to give up. I thought ‘is it really worth it?’ and ‘I’m never going to be skinny’ but when I saw the numbers on the scales go down every week, I realised it wasn’t about being skinny, it was about feeling confident in my own skin. As time went on, I really began to feel that I was
becoming the person I always wanted to be. “Slimming World is more of a lifestyle change as you can still eat normal things and not cut your favourite foods.
“I hit a point in my life where I didn’t want to be ‘the fat one’ and I was sad with how I looked and felt around people. I knew enough was enough and something had to be done.” “I have shocked myself but I couldn’t be more proud of what I have achieved so far. I

E PERSPECTIVE: Shaun directs and identifies the policing priorities for the area. He has worked for South Yorkshire Police for 28 years and this month informs Doncaster Echo readers of how 2018 went for SYP. In 2018, we changed the way we work across Doncaster to ensure we are more proactive. For us, this has meant the return of a CID department, based here in Doncaster, the reintroduction of neighbourhood policing teams and the creation of four tasking teams who proactively intervene to manage and reduce the activities of organised crime groups. This year, we’re keen to build on that success and build an even better relationship with our local communities so we can act on the issues that matter most to you. Each and every day officers here in Doncaster are doing just that and last year, our tasking teams carried out over 100 warrants, based on intelligence or concerns raised by the community, tackling organised crime groups. This area of work remains a priority for us and already this month we have carried out a number of operations, seizing cash, drugs and making significant arrests. We work closely with partner agencies, such as Doncaster Council, St Leger Homes, the NHS and the Probation Service. Together, with the police enforcement activity, our positive partnership approach to tackling crime and improving the area we live and work
in has ensured we address issues raised by the community from a variety of perspectives. This is something we’re incredibly passionate about and I always encourage people to come and speak to us on a regular basis. Only by knowing about any concerns you may have can we act on it and do something about it. I’m pleased to say that last year, through taking on a more problem-solving approach, we have seen demand here in Doncaster start to reduce. We have also seen a fall in the reports of antisocial behaviour and I’m confident that heading into 2019 we are in a good position to continue ensuring that Doncaster is a safe and enjoyable place to be. In addition to the fantastic work my teams are doing day and night, we’re also set to receive extra resources in the town. South Yorkshire Police is going to take on an extra 40 officers, and 20 of those are due to come to Doncaster. These extra resources, along with our neighbourhood teams, will mean a more visible police presence so we can tackle the problems raised and allow us to continue to develop a trusting and engaging relationship with our communities. I hope to meet some of you soon, at regular neighbourhood events, or out on patrol and I’d encourage you to speak to any officer you see, or contact us via 101, to raise any concerns you may have.

THE SAND HOUSE STORY TOLD IN SONG Doncaster duo Jenkinson-Parks releases a CD celebrating the town’s lost Victorian marvel Local poet Ian Parks and his song-writing collaborator, Mick Jenkinson, have just released a CD of two specially written and recorded songs. They began writing songs together out of a shared love of Doncaster, and a desire to celebrate its lives, loves and landscapes. The resulting first CD, Songs of our Town, was released in 2017. Their latest project commemorates and celebrates Doncaster’s former Sand House. A lost Victorian wonder, the Sand House was a mansion-sized dwelling carved from solid sandstone by businessman Henry Senior. The Sand House was a prominent feature in Doncaster from the mid-1850s until the Second World War. The site is now occupied by a 17-storey tall block of flats named Silverwood House. The Sand House Charity was registered with the Charity Commission on 2 March 2017. The aim is to advance the education of the public in history, art, sculpture and other related subjects having a link to the former Victorian Sand House. Following a chance encounter with Richard Bell, Chairman of Trustees of The Sand House Charity, Ian and Mick began working on songs which would

help to spread the story of this unique feature of Doncaster’s past to a new audience. This led to two songs being professionally recorded at The Sweet Factory Recording Studio, Louth, Lincs. Commenting on the songs, Mick said “When Ian and I set about working together, our aim was to seek out aspects of our locality that deserve to be highlighted in song. The Sand House is a Doncaster story crying out to be told, a fascinating piece of our town’s history and a great subject for a song. Hopefully, we can help bring it to a wider audience.” Richard Bell expressed his delight at hearing the finished recordings: “These uplifting songs, with their catchy melodies and memorable choruses, provide a great way of telling the amazing story of the Sand House in a new and appealing way.” All profits from the sale of the CD go to The Sand House Charity, which carries out educational, artistic and heritage activities linked to the Victorian marvel. ‘The Sand House’ CD is available to buy online at www.thesandhouse.org.uk/shop, price £4 (plus £1 p&p). WHAT THE F? Let’s talk about my favourite F word, FAT! With a multitude of negative connotations providing a terrible reputation in the food world, fat is usually blamed for obesity, heart disease and many more chronic and deadly diseases. For years, most people believed that eating fat would make them fat and damage their heart. Although too much saturated fat in your diet can lead to too many calories leading to diabetes and some cancers, this essential food group has a good side that has been sorely overlooked, giving way to processed, sugar-filled, low-fat alternatives and poor weight loss education. Fat is essential to health, giving your body energy and supporting cell growth. Fat is incredibly satiating, so you won’t end up eating as much or as often. Fats also aid your body in absorbing certain nutrients and

producing important hormones as well as vitamins A, D and E. Despite the myth that low fat equals fat loss, natural, unrefined fats such as avocado, certain dairy, grassfed beef, olives, coconut oil, high-quality dark chocolate, extra-virgin olive oil, whole eggs, nuts and oily fish are all great sources of good fats and full of essential nutrients. Why not try to include some of these fats into your diet in replacement of unhealthy snacks. As part of a healthy diet, we should try to cut down on foods and drinks high in saturated fats and replace some of them with unsaturated fats. So next time you reach for the low-fat yoghurt, just check the ingredients for hidden sugars and don’t be scared of a stick of full-fat cheese instead! Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks to us about one of the first questions she is always asked, why do I need a will?
DON’T PUT OFF MAKING A WILL There are many answers to this question depending on people’s circumstances, but in the interest of speed, I have dealt with three of the most common below: 1. To make distributing your estate easier for your family on your death. With no will in place someone will have to apply to be the ‘administrator’ of the estate. However, who is going to be the someone? Normally this must be the next of kin. A separated spouse can still apply, they then need to apply for the Letter of Administration which involves a postal application form and an interview with the Probate Registry. 2. You do not want your estate to be left as per the ‘laws of intestacy’. Most do not know how the laws of intestacy work so I have listed them below, this is how your estate is shared out if you were to die without a will. - Spouse inherits first £250,000 outright plus an absolute interest in 50% of the remainder.

Surviving children or grandchildren inherit the remainder. - If no surviving spouse, estate passes to children or grandchildren - If no surviving spouse, children or grandchildren, passes to deceased parents. - If no surviving spouse, children, grandchildren or parents, passes to surviving siblings. The next levels are: - Half-brothers and sisters, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles and half Aunts and Uncles 3. If you have minor children, without a will listing a guardianship, children will be put into foster care or social care system if both parents die. A carer would be allocated to them, this is normally done through the courts. A guardianship within a will is a simple clause which makes a legally binding request as to who will look after your children.

JOSH BERRY WINS THE EUROPEAN GOLF OPEN 2018 Meet the Doncaster teenager Josh Berry who has won The Junior European Golf Open 2018 in Spain The 13-year-old from Kirk Bramwith competed against some boys three years his senior, but managed to finish top of the table by one shot. The Junior European Open is now in its 26th year and is widely considered as the toughest test in junior golf across Europe. Josh embarked on four days of competitive golf staged on two different course measuring over 7,000 yards. After four days Josh managed to find himself in 10th position six behind the leaders. This made the cut going into the last day. The event was televised on Sky Sports on the 16th December and Josh got the chance to meet commentator David Livingstone. Josh’s dad, Scott Berry, told Doncaster Echo: “I’m so proud of Josh. I wasn’t in Spain with him but we spoke every night. Josh had already made me so proud being in 10th in a 100-strong field, but all he kept on saying to me was ‘I’m going to win’ and that’s what he did, making him the youngest winner ever!” This rounds off a fantastic year for Josh as he has also won the IMG Spanish Championships,

French National Championships and North of England Championships. The Doncaster Golf club member was also selected for Yorkshire’s Under 18s squad for the National Championships. At the age of just 13, Josh has already made his debut for England’s Under 16s and Yorkshires Under 16s and 18s. It seems the only way is up for Josh! Many congratulations and continue the hard work.

VOLUNTEER FOR TOUR DE YORKSHIRE! Since its debut in 2015, Tour De Yorkshire has proved to be one of the region’s most popular sporting events. Last year, a record 2.6 million spectators lined the route and £98 million was generated for the Yorkshire economy Everyone’s favourite race is returning on Thursday 2nd- 5th May 2019 and after the success of previous years, why not get involved and become a tour maker? At the end of 2018 it was announced Doncaster will host the start of the Stage One’s Men’s race on Thursday 2nd February. The race will begin in what will be the newly refurbished market square which will showcase the historic market to the world. Hosting the start of the race is great news for Doncaster and the event organisers are looking for volunteers to make sure the day race runs smoothly. The roles include: Spectator Engagement, Flag & Whistle Marshal, Team Supervisors and Race Direction Volunteers. Tour Makers play a vital role to the success of the event, volunteers are expected to be friendly and respectful to riders, officials and members of the public. Local knowledge of the areas around the route would be useful but is not essential.
