Buckle up for big time gravity-defying acrobatics and daredevil mogul racing as the Intermountain Healthcare FIS Freestyle International Ski World Cup returns to Deer Valley Resort this February.

This will be an especially exciting time happening right in Argent’s backyard. The whole family can have a slopeside view of this thrilling freestyle ski competition, including moguls, aerials and dual moguls. Watch as competitors twist, fly and race their way to the podium on the same runs used during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

Notorious as one of the steepest, longest, and most exciting moguls runs in the world, Deer Valley’s Champion Run will more than challenge some of the world’s best.

The gymnasts of the slopes, aerials skiers will soar as high as 55 feet in the air, launching off 11.5 to 13.5 ft. kickers at Deer Valley’s White Owl ski run. Olympic veteran Ashley Caldwell, the 2017 World Champion, will compete—she’s the only woman to ever land “The Daddy” (a quadruple-twisting triple back flip).

Qualifying rounds occur during the day, followed by exciting finals under the lights in the evening. Mogul skiers will compete Thursday, aerial skiers Friday, and dual mogul skiers Saturday. You’ll also want to stick around for the fireworks each night.

All events are free to the public—this major competition draws thousands of fans to cheer on the elite athletes.

Last winter’s 2019 Championships, also at Deer Valley, has been called the largest sporting event in Utah since the Olympics.

I played hockey, but I hated it—I sweated all the time and never got the puck. Then I tried ice-skating. I can do bunny hops, crossovers, lunges and “catch spirals,” where you grab your foot and lift it up to your head. The waltz jump is the hardest thing I do. It’s really fun. I even gave my mom a lesson—she’s a better lawyer, but I’m a better skater.

My friends and I hike up in the hills above town, make snowmen, and have snowball fights playing King of the Hill. We can be kind of rough playing— but you’re falling in snow, so it doesn’t hurt. I like skating and snowboarding too.

My brother and I like to go sledding at Library Park. We bring our labradoodle, Luke—he runs and plays in the snow with lots of other dogs, and he likes to chase us as we sled down the hill! Then we go into Lucky Ones Coffee by the park for hot chocolate.

The most fun is dog sledding at Rancho Luna Lobos.

For us kids there are two dogs for each sled. We have races with 12 sleds racing at once. We also train in the summer. I like skiing too. I’m just learning how to snowboard.

In places like Deer Valley’s Bonanza Flats and Guardsman Pass, my dad and I hike up to find fresh powder and then ski down. We’ll hike up the hill ten times in one day. It’s worth the work to ski fresh powder! I also do “Futsal” indoor soccer—it has smaller goals, so it’s harder to score.

Imagine gliding through the snow on a horse-drawn sleigh, toward a rustic mountain lodge glowing with warmth and good cheer. You are welcomed inside, where the dining room is lantern-lit and heavily timbered. At five roaring stone fireplaces, chefs cook over open flames.

They are creating not just a meal, but a unique four-course dining experience inspired by Alpine traditions. You’ve been transported to the Swiss Alps—or the next best thing.

This is Fireside Dining, Deer Valley Resort’s most popular restaurant, and your family’s new favorite tradition.

“We wanted to recreate the flavor of the Alps in Deer Valley,” says Jodie Rogers, Deer Valley Resort Director of Food and Beverage, “and also to make it sustainable with in-season, local and regional foods, supporting small farms and suppliers.”

The restaurant offers four courses, all served fireside. The first is a quintessential Swiss dish, the Raclette. Raclette is a firm, flavorful cheese made in a style invented by thirteenth century Swiss farmers. Chefs warm the cheese at the fireplace until it develops the ideal creamy texture. At Fireside Dining, the cheese is accompanied by delicacies such as cured meats, freshly baked baguettes, and house-made fig mustard and strawberry chutney.

Course two, also prepared and served at a chef-attended fireplace, consists of savory entrées such as Almond FlourDusted Utah Trout and Millcreek CoffeeRubbed Elk Tenderloin. Accompanying these are a variety of fresh, locally sourced salads and soups.

Course three includes the restaurant’s legendary Fire-Roasted Leg of Lamb, slow-cooked and brushed with fresh herbs and seasonings. Add inventive Dutch oven specialties like Mountain Macaroni (baby penne with gruyere, Raclette and bacon lardons) and Roasted Asparagus with a Lemon, Blackberry and Lavender Reduction. Always enlivening the classic menu are weekly specials, from Brussels Sprout Panzanella with Housemade Mozzarella to Roasted Golden Beet and Quinoa Stew.

Dessert is course four—fondue, of course. The chocolate, caramel, and white chocolate Grand Marnier fondues are served with fresh and dried fruits, cinnamon pound cake, cookie bites and almond biscotti.

Naturally, there’s a full bar with with attractively priced wine, beer, and specialty cocktails.

“Skiers have a hearty appetite,” Jodie says, with lighthearted good humor about Fireside Dining’s rich assortment of comfort foods. She also notes that the restaurant will happily accommodate different diet restrictions and personal eating choices. The menu includes a variety of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, and guests are welcome to request substitutions. “People care about the health and wellness of their families,” she says.

“We try to accommodate and support that.”

There’s also a special menu for kids, with classics like pasta, chicken sticks, and desserts à la carte.

Like its cuisine, Fireside Dining’s mood is elevated, yet also welcoming and

comforting. “We don’t hurry people,” Jodie says. “Guests may go to the fireplace as often as they want. They can see the chefs in action. They can talk to the chefs and learn about the different foods.” The chefs often develop friendly relationships with families who return to the restaurant again and again.

The restaurant prioritizes service, quality and value. Portions are generous, servers are attentive, and the pace is decidedly unhurried.

You can even take a sleigh ride in the middle of dinner.

Argent owners can take a complimentary shuttle to and from the restaurant. For those who prefer to drive, valet service is also free. (Even in a blizzard—don’t worry about digging your car out of the snow!) And if you wish, the restaurant will arrange sleigh rides or snowshoe treks around your dinner.

Deer Valley and luxurious residential communities like Argent and One Empire Pass have for years been drawing big names in business, sports and entertainment to little Park City.

Now cutting-edge film and television production—complete with A-List celebrities—is happening right here in town.

Utah Film Studios, the state’s largest production studio, has drawn major films, commercial shoots, and TV shows—most recently, Yellowstone, the popular Netflix TV series starring Kevin Costner.

“The size of this $25 million production center is comparable to anything you’ll find in LA, London, or Canada,” says Marshall Moore, VP of Operations for UFS and formerly the Director of the Utah Film Commission. “We now provide 91,375 square feet of soundstages and production space.”

A series like Yellowstone also creates 250 jobs, making the economic benefit to the community substantial considering how much the cast and crew spend on hotels, rental homes, restaurants,

services, retail stores and rental cars to name a few. The studio also gives back to the community, occasionally opening its doors for fundraisers when possible.

Last year, the space hosted an event that helped raise over $1 million for Peace House, a women and children’s shelter.

The rock band Imagine Dragons have filmed at UFS. The ABC drama Blood and Oil, starring Don Johnson, and the internationally acclaimed independent film Wind River, winner of the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival for Taylor Sheridan, were created here as well.

“We can make a creative case as well as a financial case” for producers, Moore says. Along with UFS’s expansive, high-tech studio facilities, there’s Park City’s location. Hollywood talent appreciates how easy it is to travel to and from Park City. Actors, directors and producers like Costner have also become part of the community, living in town while shooting here. Utah already has an impressive database of film crew professionals. And the state offers attractive financial incentives to those who shoot here. Up to 25% postperformance incentive is available to projects that will spend a minimum of $500,000 in Utah.

Perhaps Utah Film Studios’s biggest draw is the uniquely diverse and beautiful terrain in and around Park City—from soaring mountains and sparkling rivers to dramatic red rock desert. Very appealing to a western drama that follows a hardscrabble family of homesteaders and ranchers.
