One of East West’s signature amenities for their Deer Valley residences is a full-time, live-in Lodgekeeper Concierge. We caught up with two of them, Patricia Seckel of Flagstaff and Trent Donat of One Empire Pass.

SLOPESIDE: What is a Lodgekeeper Concierge?

PATRICIA: It’s really four jobs in one. First off, we’re the building managers, making sure the lodge and amenities are always in order. We’re also responsible for the food and beverage services, which include buffet breakfasts and hosting Happy Hour. We’re in charge of Guest Services, too. This covers everything from coordinating housekeeping to delivering packages. Last, but certainly not least, we’re the owners’ personal Concierge, which entails such tasks as making dinner and theater reservations as well as arranging catering for family events.

SLOPESIDE: Do you have much personal interaction with your owners?

TRENT: Absolutely! I’ve skied and gone mountain biking with some of my families, so they can experience more of what makes Deer Valley so special. We also help families interact with each other, sort of like a cruise director. We create fun social settings that make it easy for them to meet new people and make new friends.

SLOPESIDE: What do your owners appreciate the most?

PATRICIA: It’s really all about personal service.

We always put them first, and they really like that. They know they can call us anytime and we’ll handle the situation. We live on site, so we’re almost always here. We even get to know their preferences, right down to their kid’s favorite orange drink and whether they like sugar in their oatmeal.

SLOPESIDE: What are some of the highlights for you?

TRENT: When owners tell us their vacations are the best they’ve ever had. It reflects the pride we take in our jobs. After all, we’re catering to highly successful, accomplished people—they know when things are run well. Helping people enjoy great vacations and leave with lasting memories also increases the value of owning here.

PATRICIA: I really enjoy developing personal relationships with our owners. They appreciate how we’re working to make their experiences here special and memorable. They know we’ll be at the door when they arrive and waving good-bye when they leave.

TRENT: Memory-making is magic.

Tucked away behind Main Street at Heber and Swede Alley, Handle could be one of those out-of-sight, out-of-mind casualties. But Handle Chef/Owner Briar Handly has found a substantial and loyal following—or rather, they have found him.

Briar takes annual food trips in search of new ideas and inspiration. One recent trip included a stint as a cook at the Michelin-3Star Restaurant at Meadowbrook in Napa, California. At home, Briar can also be found foraging in the local woods for onion blossoms, morel mushrooms, wild asparagus and elderflower. “I have to keep it fresh,” says Briar. “Not only the locally sourced ingredients, but the unique combinations and cooking techniques used in the preparation.”
