Investiture Ceremony of Dr. Jin Young Choi as Baptist Missionary Training School Professorial Chair in Biblical Studies

Tuesday April 13, 2021 11:00AM

Alma Mater All Hail The Pow’r of Jesus’ Name (DIADEM) All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ Name! Let angels prostrate fall, Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him, crown Him, Crown Him, crown Him, And crown Him, Lord of all. Ye saints redeemed of Adam’s race, Ye ransomed from the fall, Ye ransomed from the fall; Hail Him who saves you by His grace, And crown Him, crown Him, Crown Him, crown Him, And crown Him, Lord of all. Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget The wormwood and the gall, The wormwood and the gall, Go, spread you trophies at His feet And crown Him, crown Him, Crown Him, crown Him, And crown Him, Lord of all. O that with yonder sacred throng We at His feet may fall! We at His feet may fall! We’ll join the everlasting song, And crown Him, crown Him, Crown Him, crown Him, And crown Him, Lord of all. And crown Him, Lord of all, Crown Him, Lord of all, Crown Him, Lord of all, And crown Him, Lord of all.

Words by Rev. Edward Perronet (1779); Music by James Ellor (1938)

Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School and the Baptist Missionary Training School The 19th century was a period of great ferment and social change. While the Social Gospel movement concentrated on the widening gap between the rich and poor, the Baptist Missionary Training School, founded in Chicago in 1881, was created to address another issue: the role of women in the Church. BMTS Campus, Chicago IL

Its founder, Mrs. Rumah Crouse, possessed a vision both local and global. She created a community for women who were “responding to God’s call as revealed in Jesus Christ,” even when the Church failed to recognize their call.

Typical of its graduates was Joanna P. Moore, a graduate of its first class in 1881, who worked with African-Americans for more than 40 years, instituting “fireside schools” to teach literacy skills to women and children. To prepare its graduates for such forms of service, the training school innovatively combined classroom work with field education to equip its students to minister wherever the need was greatest.

In 1961, the Baptist Missionary Training School joined Colgate Rochester, adding another important branch to the school’s lineage.

The BMTS Professorship was established in 1996, the first fully endowed chair at CRCDS. The chair honors the rich legacy brought to this divinity school by the BMTS. The chair honors the foresight of the women who led BMTS and the unfailing faithfulness of their support of CRCDS. The first person to hold the chair was Professor, Dr. Werner Lemke.

Dr. Werner Lemke

Over the years the BMTS alumnae have remained connected through Alumni/ae reunions, Echoes – annual newsletter and their continued support to the BMTS Professorial Chair and BMTS Scholarship. The legacy of BMTS is alive and well as CRCDS continues to impact the world by educating women for leadership in a diverse range of ministries. BMTS Reunion, 1999

Today, we remember our BMTS sisters who have passed and also honor the presence of those that are able to be with us in today’s ceremony. We continue to see the legacy of the Baptist Missionary Training School lived out in Colgate Rochester Crozer’s Divinity School’s mission to form students in theological and multi-religious studies to serve, care and advocate for all peoples and the earth.
