Move over Cannes, Cairns’ own film festival is bigger and better than ever! In an age where video is king, Understory Film Festival has never been more timely. 2023 marks ten years since the festival’s inception and to say we have film fever is an understatement (beware, may be contagious!). This year we are shaking things up and adding an entire new subsidiary film festival, especially for budding high school filmmakers, which will run alongside our flagship event. You only need to look online to see the talent many of these young creatives hold, and this new event gives them the chance to showcase their skills on the big screen, inspiring the next generation of creative practitioners. Both events target short films – each must be eight minutes or less – and

beyond that stipulation, the sky’s the limit when it comes to your creativity! Do you have a local story that needs to be told? Are you wanting to morph your illustrations into video? Do you have a musician friend who needs a film clip? From documentaries and dramas to animations or comedy, any film medium is welcome. Beyond the $2,500 prizes for Best Film and the People’s Choice Award, additional accolades are awarded by a panel of screen industry professionals. There are no specific categories for these awards, to allow for filmmakers to flex their fully fledged fanciful potential. Over the decade, the event has received 484 film submissions, screened 163 short films, and

presented 92 awards to local filmmakers. Previous winners have gone on to have their films toured including being screened at the coveted Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). Now, 2023 is anticipated to be stronger than ever thanks to the festival’s new format. Understory Film Festival and Understory High are an unmissable opportunity to kick-start your career in the film industry, strengthen your standing as an established filmmaker, and to push your own creative boundaries. The festival welcomes North Queensland filmmakers of any experience level – from Townsville in the south, Torres Strait in the north and west to the Gulf of Carpentaria. We are looking forward to our best year yet!

SINK YOUR TEETH INTO BITE CLUB Part cabaret, part circus, part comedy, and a whole lotta fun. Bite Club is a late-night home for the wild, the weird and the whacky, and definitely the spot where you want to be this Cairns Festival. Bite Club, the new incarnation from the award-winning cult cabaret mischief makers, circus stars and heart stopping hooligans Briefs Factory, is bold, brash, and – in their own words – ‘served with a sprinkle of drag and a whole lot of camp’. Unapologetically a show for grown-ups, this well-known Aussie troupe consists of five performers whose mix of burlesque and cabaret will be familiar to any veteran cheeky cabaret lover (and a scintillating surprise for newcomers!). Expect a pumping soundtrack with your favourite dance floor bangers plus a cavalcade of extraordinarily physically gifted cabaret and circus artists. Sahara Beck, one of Australia’s most arresting performers, showcases her soaring vocals blasting female pride power into the ferociously fierce displays of talent from the Briefs boys we know and love. Their slick tomfoolery and heart-stopping hooliganism will be bathed in suave synth, heady hooks and swelling strings, all set to a glorious pop pulse. Dance until late, laugh until you ache, and pay homage to the traditions of circus, the extremities of physical theatre, the artistry of drag, the guts of burlesque, the imagery of theatre, the debauchery of speakeasies and the showmanship of cabaret: Welcome to Bite Club.

How We Relate

CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS AND TEXTILES FROM YALANJI ARTS Located in Mossman Gorge Aboriginal Community, on the border of the Daintree National Park, Yalanji Arts nurtures and develops artists to showcase culture and generate individual and community growth. This exhibition of textiles and free-form ceramic vessels shows the current direction the artists of Yalanji Arts are taking. The small group of artists are hitting their stride and proclaiming their own unique aesthetic, expressing their distinct rainforest inspired style. This new body of work conveys how Yalanji artists’ multi-media approach informs their practice with a cross-pollination effect, the designs complementing each other across the two disciplines of textiles and ceramics.

Hot Potato Band Hot Potato Band’s larger-than-life brass collective is a breath of fresh air, setting a new bar for energetic and interactive musical performances. Finding home in Sydney, Australia, their positive coastal energy pushes euphoric boundaries in their bold quest to reignite acoustic instrumentation.

Hidden identities and unrequited love! Viola is shipwrecked and believes her twin Sebastian lost to the ocean. Washed up in a strange new land, determined to survive, Viola disguises herself as a man named Cesario and finds work with Duke Orsino, only to fall head over heels in love with him. But Orsino is in love with Olivia, who – grieving for her brother – refuses all offers of romance. Until, that is, she meets Cesario for the first time. A whirlwind of passion ensues, leaving no one unaffected, not even Olivia’s prudish housekeeper Malvolia, played by Jane Montgomery Griffiths (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Titus Andronicus).

Un-bound by genres, stages and audiences, the band’s 10 year street performing history and unique sound is built on the backs of three drummers, a sousaphone and five horns that cover catchy chorus lines, providing a beautiful harmonic cloud for vocals to float above. They have reinvented the traditional street brass band to a modern day dance machine and visual spectacle for all demographics, with a strong sense of pride for their funloving, organic, and quirky musical nature.

Vessels, Vehicles, Velocity (vroom, vroom, vroom) is a collection of reminiscences – some real, having actual coordinates in the space-time continuum, and others fantastical. Vivid moments in time or in the architecture of Ian’s imagination, are all deeply symbolic of dynamic growth: Ian’s childhood family car (and his current one), memories of pivotal experiences in travel in Arnhem Land or India jumble against dreamy voyages of the mind with billowing sails or steaming boilers.
