Kristen Egelston Happy New Year! It’s a New Year, new Building, new EO – so it’s fitting to say our theme for 2019 is “new directions.” Too often, the words “new” and “change” have a negative connotation. There’s an old saying “Nothing changes if nothing changes.” Simple, yet true. When you respect the history and have the expert opinions of those that participated in it, as CRBRA does, it makes this new-ness an opportunity for CRBRA to be nimble and explore new directions. My hope is that you embrace new and change with me as I think it will spark excitement, ideas and innovation for all of us. Since the last issue, we’ve bid Pam Krison farewell and good luck in her retirement, put the finishing touches on phase one of the CRBRA HQ renovation and installed our 2019 Executive Board and Board of Directors – on top of the everyday business of keeping the association
running smoothly. This year’s Installation Celebration was a blast. Check out page xx for photos. Your 2019 leadership team is fantastic and has already stepped up to the plate. I have every confidence that they’ll make you proud this year. In Ken’s column, he expressed his desire to get more people involved in CRBRA. I echo that desire and invite you to get involved. Whether you’ve been in the business five months, five years or 20 years – there really is something for everyone at CRBRA. We thrive thanks to the talents our diverse membership brings to the table. The kitchen is the hub of every home. It’s where your family meals are made, party guests congregate, and the kids pull up a seat at the island to get their homework done. The kitchen is the focal point in most new construction homes. "As a builder, most of our marketing materials show the kitchen as the 'centerpiece' of the home. From my experience at the Parade of Homes, I would say at least 50-60 percent of comments from visitors is about the kitchen, whether it be size and layout or materials and appliances used,” said Brandon Marini, Director of Marketing at Marini Homes.
Mitchell Parker, Houzz writer, compiled the following list of 2019 kitchen design trends based on Houzz data, home design photos, past articles and interviews with professional designers.
According to the Houzz & Home Renovation Trends Study released in June 2018, the kitchen was for at least the third straight year, the most popular room in the house for remodeling. The study also found that median spending on kitchen remodels increased by 10-percent in 2017 and had the highest return on investment at 83-percent.

cabinetry are numbered, which I like to think is due to designers just being over the white Shaker trend. We’re seeing a lot of wood on wood mixes, especially with client’s wanting wood floors and a warmer, less sterile look.”

“In our area, we do see some clients being more venturous with pops of color, but they’re staying closer to the neutral side with deep grays or navy on their cabinetry for accents,” said Justina Auer, Designer at Bennett Contracting. Auer said she hopes to have a brave client who will try this trend, as did designers at Capitol Kitchens & Baths.
