WELCOME TO THE SHIRE OF DANDARAGAN

Whether this is your first time visiting the Shire of Dandaragan, or you are a return holiday maker, may I offer you a warm welcome to our region over this holiday period.

It seems like the years are flying by faster than ever, particularly since the onset of the pandemic and with our WA border opening up in early February 2022, we are once again fortunate to enjoy our Christmas and New Year celebrations with no restrictions and for this we can all be grateful. The West Australian State Government has done a wonderful job of managing the pandemic, as have all West Australians who have supported the steps taken to prevent its spread through lockdowns, mask wearing, gathering restrictions, and getting vaccinated.

Onto more merrier things, this year we are excited to showcase our redeveloped Jurien Bay foreshore following the completion of our new state of the art skatepark, and new interactive nature playground, mini basketball court, and family picnic area. Since the staged openings of all these locations the foreshore has seen increased vibrancy and numbers utilising these areas since their completion. We are extremely proud of our new look foreshore and hope you and your family enjoy it too.

With so much to see and do in our Shire make sure you stop in at our Turquoise Coast Visitors Centre on the main street of Jurien Bay. Our friendly staff will be able to provide you with all the up to date information on events and places of interest for you to visit. Popular spots include the Stockyard Gully Caves, Lesueur National Park, the Turquoise Way Path (a dual use path from the Jurien Bay Marina to the Hill River mouth), the Pinnacles, the Lobster Shack in Cervantes, Jurien Heights Mini Golf, to name just a few.

Don’t forget about our inland towns - Badgingarra and Dandaragan - which also have plenty to offer visitors. Be sure to check out Badgingarra’s delightful Vern Westbrook Walk and Art Trail or for a small donation have a round of 18 holes at the new mini golf course located near the Badgingarra oval and public toilets – just make sure you bring your own golf clubs and balls to avoid disappointment. A counter lunch at the Badgingarra Tavern is a good idea too should you work up a thirst and an appetite. Exciting new things are happening in Dandaragan with some new feature art pieces about the town and a new pump track for the kids to enjoy on their bikes or scooters. Less than 2 hours from Perth, Dandaragan

makes a great stopover at our Transit Caravan Park set in the peaceful Pioneer Park. The wonderful scenic tourist drive between Dandaragan and Badgingarra, off the Brand Highway, is certainly worth a look.

For those who enjoy the great outdoors, be sure to visit the new Yonga Walk Trail in the Lesueur National Park. This walk trail is a 26km loop that leads through hills, valleys and woodlands and can be completed in one day for those fit and experienced hikers or you can take two days and camp overnight in the campground. For more detailed information visit the Trails WA website but remember to always be mindful of forecast weather conditions before setting off, particularly in these hot summer months.

It is so wonderful to offer new and exciting things to do in our region each year and I hope you enjoy every minute of your time here. Remember to be safe on our roads if you a travelling and have a wonderful Christmas and New Year however you get to spend it this year.

TURQUOISE COAST VISITOR CENTRE

The Turquoise Coast Visitor Centre has been helping visitors to our town and region since 2015. It is a fullyserviced, accredited visitor centre on the Coral Coast that not only has brochures but is also a place to find maps, gifts, tourist merchandise, displays, videos highlighting the region and to make tour and accommodation bookings. Drop in and visit us during your stay or as you pass through the region. In the meantime, here are some of the most common questions we get asked:

Can I make a booking for Sandy Cape campsites?

No, Sandy Cape is filled on a first come, first served basis. There is usually space available except for long weekends and school holidays.

Where can we fill up our caravan water tanks?

There is a water tap in the carpark outside the Jurien Bay Town Hall (next to the tennis courts) or at the ablution block at Memorial Park (not suitable for caravans or large vehicles) at the end of Hastings Street.

Cervantes water taps are available at Catalonia Park, Cervantes Memorial Park and the Cervantes Community Recreation Centre.

How far to the Pinnacles from here?

The Pinnacles Desert is 44km south from Jurien Bay. It will take about 40 minutes to get there.

Do you sell the souvenir gold coins?

Yes we do, our coins are stamped with the unique Australian Sea Lion.

Where can we buy National Park Passes? We sell a selection of passes or you can buy them at the entry to each park.

Do you have WIFI?

Yes, we do - it’s absolutely free and available 24-hours a day. Get your password from the Visitor Centre.

Do you know anywhere that sells magnets/stickers/hat pins/local produce etc?

Absolutely, try the Visitor Centre, Jurien Bay CRC, Newsagent or Post Office, and keep an eye out when visiting galleries and tourism operators. There are some lovely items available that are unique to this region.

Can we see the Australian sea lions from the mainland?

Not usually, and there is usually just a single sea lion if you do see one close to the shore. To see groups of sea lions,

there are three boat charter companies in Jurien Bay and one in Cervantes with most departing daily. We can show you prices, inclusions, check availability and book for you.

Can we explore the caves around here?

Yes, the Stockyard Gully Caves are a 45 minute drive north of Jurien Bay and east of Leeman. You must have a 4WD due to the high clearance of some limestone rocks and soft sand on the track in. We have a brochure with a map and all the information you need. Don’t forget your torch.

Do you have a map of the town?

Yes we do. We have town maps, regional maps, State maps and more. Just ask us.

What events are on during my stay?

Come in and we can let you know what’s happening in Jurien Bay and around the Shire.

Where can we buy fresh fish and lobster? Can we take dogs to Sandy Cape? Where can we stay for the night? Where are some great 4WD tracks? Can you fish off the beach or jetty? Where can we get a coffee? Is there an op shop? Can we camp on the beach? Can visitors borrow library books? Is there a car wash nearby? Can we have a campfire? Is there a caravan park in town? As you can see, the questions we can help answer are varied and different every day, but it’s an absolute pleasure talking to people about holidays and helping them make the most of their time in the region.

CERVANTES - THE PINNACLE OF THE COAST

Internationally known for the famous Pinnacles, Cervantes is a great location offering various activities and stunning natural wonder that appeal to all.

17kms south of Cervantes townsite, the Pinnacles desert is a major tourist attraction of the region. Attracting more than half a million visitors every year, the Pinnacles desert covers an area of around 190ha, is around 60m above sea level and contains thousands of limestone pinnacles with some reaching 5m in height.

Accessible by vehicle, foot or tour via a fully sealed road, sightseers are advised to allow at least 2 hours to follow the viewing trail and access the lookout. Entry fees for the park are $15 per passenger with pensioner discounts available, all payable at the gate. Caravans and trailers can be left in the car park, as the 4km loop is unsuitable for these. Annual parks passes can make travelling cheaper by purchasing through RAC, or through the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions in person or via their website.

Pets, open fires and camping are all prohibited within the park boundaries. Hats, sunscreen and water are essential pre-requisites for a visit to the Pinnacles, especially throughout summer. And please remember the cardinal rule when visiting the Pinnacles is look and don’t touch!

Once you have eaten, head south of town to find Lake Thetis, one of the few places in the world to shelter marine stromatolites! The Lake Thetis Loop Trail is an easy, 1.5 kilometre trail around the shores of the lake that provides opportunities to see and learn about the living communities of diverse inhabitants, with population densities of 3000 per square metres in the structures.

After your visit to the Pinnacles, you can head to nearby Cervantes for a meal. The Lobster Shack is the perfect spot to enjoy a feed of Crayfish and take in the coastal view. You can go on a tour of the factory or working crayfish boat while you are visiting and get a feel for the original industry that developed Cervantes.

If the kids want to play, check out the shark themed playground near the Sports and Recreation Centre or at the beach next to the Caravan Park. See if you can spot some of the art around town made for the Cervantes Art Festival.

Walk around the lake to take a look at these living fossils, which were formed by an organism similar to earliest forms of life on earth. Stromatolites are built by microorganism too small for the human eye to see. The first 300 metres of boardwalk, which is universally accessible, passes the best examples of thrombolites in the lake.

The thrombolite-building micro-organisms of Lake Thetis resemble the earliest forms of life on Earth. The discovery of modern examples help scientists to understand the significance of micro-organisms in the environment and unravel the long history of life on earth. Today living examples of these once completely dominant organism are restricted to only a few places.

If it gets windy there’s always the newly renovated health centre turned museum, where you can see the detailed curation of over 50 years of Cervantes history.

THREE BAYS WALKWAY - GREEN HEAD

Green Head’s ‘Three Bays Walkway’ is designed to let people immerse themselves in the landscape, experience its natural beauty, learn about the Aboriginal and European history and give visitors an opportunity to engage in repairing the coastal ecosystems and provide access for recreation.

During spring, the coast is covered in wildflowers, but still has stunning native plants all round year as well. To help the visitor better understand the area, the Three Bays Walkway is divided into sections, each with its own unique sense of place.

The Three Bays of Green Head were created by an extraordinary limestone cliff escarpment approximately 2 kilometres long being eroded by the Indian Ocean. It includes the sweeping South Bay, the picturesque Dynamite Bay, and the charming yet peaceful Anchorage Bay. The white sandy beaches, rocky inlets and headlands, and rich limestone reefs provide an unmatched habitat of coastal health land and nesting sites for a wide range of native fauna. The southern half of the escarpment forms the northernmost section of the Jurien Bay Marine Park, emphasising the importance of this unique coastal environment on West Australia’s truly remarkable Turquoise Coast.

The wildlife is abundant with visitors being able to see sea lions and dolphins in their natural habitat. A bird-watchers dream, the walk along the cliff will allow the visitor to see, at close proximity, white bellied sea eagles (Haliaeetus leucogaster), ospreys (Pandion haliaetus), pacific gulls (Larus pacificus), crested terns (Sterna bergii) and many other intriguing bird species.

For thousands of years Yued people have seasonally visited the Three Bays to hunt and collect fish, other marine life and the natural foods of the surrounding coastal vegetation, and gathered in the cooling breeze to eat and access fresh water. Yued people have been extensively consulted to ensure proper recognition of the ancient midden sites on the headlands and protection of the surrounding coastal environment

These midden sites are registered under the Aboriginal Heritage Act and during the consultation process Yued people have given full support to the project, engaging in important educative programs to raise awareness of the significance of the Three Bays and provide coastal management advice. ‘Cuencandjaa’ is the Yued name for Dynamite Bay meaning ‘mouthful of sand’ which is most appropriate for the natural form of the bay.

The earliest known European visitors to the Turquoise Coast were seafarers who visited while attempting to reach settlements in Indonesia. One of these voyages was by the Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon) which in 1656, was wrecked on the WA coast and led to Abraham Leeman’s two epic voyages in open boats to Java. There is a belief that the Gilt Dragon met it’s fate at Dynamite Bay. More recently, the SS Cambewarra foundered in 1914 off of Green Head and sank, commemorated in the naming of the northern headland of Dynamite Bay – Cambewarra Head.

Green Head’s Three Bays are in Yued country and contain ancient midden sites and hunting grounds, and formed an important environment for the livelihood of traditional owners.

DANDARAGAN & BADGINGARRA

Dandaragan is a one hour drive from Jurien Bay and 20 minutes from Badgingarra, making it a perfect destination for a day out if you are staying in Jurien Bay and are getting sick of the beach. Both Dandaragan and Badgingarra are famous for their wildflowers, but those aren’t the only things to see and do in the hotter months.

Dandaragan features historical buildings like Aggie’s Cottage (1871) which hosts a huge array of events throughout the year and St. Anne’s Church, which was built in 1888 as a school and church and held classes until 1948.

and beautiful scenery. Along the way you can learn about the Yallalie Meteorite impact zone that occurred in the area 70 million years ago.

Cottage - Dandaragan

Pioneer Park features a rotunda depicting the history of Dandaragan since 1843, and the park area is great for a picnic or barbeque. This area also features the brand new ‘Dandaragan’ mural, with art right to the centre of the town. See if you can spot the ‘Pythagoras Tree’ while you are in town.

Dandaragan Way is a scenic route to the Brand Highway from Regan’s Ford, which is lined with Redgum Trees and offers truly unique views which should not be missed. Regan’s Ford was named for Edward Regan, who was commissioned by Walter Padbury of Yathroo Farm to build the original ford for 10 pounds in 1870, which was vital to the progress of the area so produce and stock was able to be transported to Guildford for sale.

On the tourist drive, enjoy stunning scenery including rolling hills, running creeks, marri trees, thousands of cockatoos and the unique flora of the Badgingarra National Park region.

The Vern Westbrook Walk Trail is located in Badgingarra, 50min away from Jurien Bay. Located in Phoebe’s Reserve and just off the Brand Highway along North-West Road, the trail is a 3-part walk with seasonal wildflowers, heritage sites, community art

James Giddy Mural - Badgingarra

The Iain Wilson Nature Trail is situated in the Badgingarra National Park and is one of the best places to see wildflowers between August and November, but is still enjoyable provided you have a cool summer day. This 2km walk offers a wildflower display unique to the area including the extremely rare Badgingarra Mallee. For the avid walker, a 1.5km detour will reward visitors with magnificent views across the national park at the lookout.

While in Badgingarra, give their Mini - Golf a go, requiring a donation to enter, and has been open since 2021, when you’re done, cool off with a beer at the Badgingarra Tavern.

Mini Golf at Badgingarra

It’s important to be mindful of wildlife this time of the year, with larger animals like kangaroos and emus coming out later at night to beat the heat, and smaller animals like thorny devils and echidnas often remaining still on roads. Farmers are also transporting large quantities of grain on roads so be mindful of the size of these vehicles, as well as the impact this travel has on unfamiliar roads.

FISHING IN JURIEN BAY

Fishing is a popular activity in Jurien Bay with options to suit most people. You can cast a line from a boat, the beach, jetty or marina and you don’t need a lot of equipment- a handline off the jetty can prove to be quite successful if you are there at the right time. If you are only fishing from the land you don’t even need a licence.

marina. The marina walls are a good place to try for snapper or some larger predatory fish.

Beach fishing is great in the evening with some burley. Herring and tailor are the most common catches from the beach, although whiting are also a common catch. Mulies are a great choice for bait, along with squid and prawns. As with most fishing it is a waiting game, but it gives you time to take in our stunning sunsets.

The Jurien Bay Jetty is a popular place to fish from early in the morning until late at night. It is well lit and is a great place to catch squid, herring, tailor, skippy and whiting. Long lines off the end of the jetty have even snared a few snapper. Use plenty of burley and time your trip, with late afternoon into the evening being a great time to fish. If you are lucky enough you often see dolphins hunting the squid. Hand lines in the shallow water will also pay off.

If you are lucky enough to own a boat or know someone who does, then you are in for a treat. Boat fishing is extremely popular in this region, where you can catch everything from dhufish to snapper, not too far offshore. You will need a current Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence. Applications for online recreational fishing licences and renewals are processed through the Department of Transport’s website transport.wa.gov.au or you can pop in to the Jurien Bay CRC on Bashford Street and we’ll be happy to assist you. We will be closing between Christmas and New Year, re-opening at 9 am on Tuesday 3rd January 2022.

The marina used to be a place to catch swimmer crabs and small bait fish, however with the issues had in the marina this year, check to see if it is safe to fish in the

If you don’t have access to a boat do not despair, there are plenty of charter fishing companies in town. They can provide all the equipment and you also gain their local knowledge. Ask at the Turquoise Coast Visitor Centre for their contact information. Seasport and Tackle is also a great place to have most of your fishing related questions answered, and to pick up some bait. So throw in a line and try to catch a big one! Even if you don’t, the story about ‘that’ one that got away never hurt anyone.

BEAT THE HEAT

Summer is heating up and with that brings the desire to cool down in the largest body of water available! Jurien Bay, Cervantes and Green Head are known for their bright white beaches and clear turquoise waters, so it begs the question, which beach do I go to?

SANDY CAPE, JURIEN BAY

A 15 minute drive north from Jurien Bay is this picturesque playground for all. The protected waters are generally calm all day and suitable for the whole family. If you are into 4WD-ing there’s plenty of little coves off the many tracks leaving from Sandy Cape. Jurien Bay Adventure Tours has an equipment hire station located near the big sand dune. They hire SUP’s and sandboards for the adventurous.

‘FRONT’

BEACH, CERVANTES

The “face” of Cervantes, who could miss the incredible vista of Crayboats moored metres off of the beach. The perfect place to go for a swim or get on a paddle board, watch out for boats launching and tractors driving along the beach!

THIRSTY POINT, CERVANTES

‘NORTH HEAD’, JURIEN BAY

Jurien Bay’s longest beach, the beach north of the marina is where locals take their precious pooches for a paddle. With plenty of sand, the beach has become popular for 4WD’s, fishermen and families alike. The beach backs up directly to bush, so be wary of ticks and sand flies during the summer and try not to chop up the sand with your vehicles too much, as this beach can become virtually inaccessible if the sand gets too corrugated. Keep an eye out for kids and animals on this beach.

‘SECRET’ BEACH, JURIEN BAY

Is the spot to go if you want to take young kids and more mature relatives for a swim. Protected from the wind and the surf, this idyllic beach is typically the place to go for a chill day, provided there is no seaweed or nasty smells. Check first if the water is swimmable, due to our ongoing Marina issues.

This southern beach / point of Cervantes features a lookout and is the best place to go if you are looking to go windsurfing. Dunes line the beach, hiding the Thirsty Point Walk Trail which connects to the Hansen Bay Lookout.

‘BACK’

BEACH, CERVANTES

BEACH & JETTY BEACH, JURIEN BAY

‘MEMORIAL’

The most widely accessible beach in Jurien Bay, these beaches are either a short walk from a car park or accessible from the jetty. If you’re thinking about beach fishing, stick to the evenings and early mornings .

‘SHINGLE’ BEACH, JURIEN BAY

Looks a bit different from when you may have last seen it! Most of the beach has been swept away by woolly weather from our winter storms this year! This beach used to be accessible by 4WD, but because of storm damage is now accessible by foot.

Looking for a 4WD spot? You’ve come to the right spot! Past the southern half of thirsty point this area is vetted for 4WD access. This is a popular dog exercising area so keep an eye out for four legged friends when driving on the beach here.

HANSEN BAY BEACH , CERVANTES

At the end of Hansen Bay Road, this vehicle-accessible beach is a great spot to park up your car, go beach fishing and watch the sunset. With an expansive beach there is plenty of room for everyone, just a few minutes away from Cervantes by car and great for an afternoon adventure out of town.

KANGAROO POINT, CERVANTES

A 12 minute drive from Cervantes, Kangaroo Point is another ‘adventure spot’ – make a day of it and take down lunch provided it’s not blowing a gale!

‘DYNAMITE

BAY’, GREEN HEAD

A lovely beach mostly sheltered from the prevailing wind, Dynamite Bay is very picturesque and popular with families and solo travellers alike. There is an access ramp at the southern end of the car park for prams, walkers etc, a shower and fresh water tap on the grassed section between the beach and the car park, and shelters with picnic tables overlooking the bay.

POINT LOUISE, GREEN HEAD

Accessible via an unsealed road from Green Head Road, the Point Louise Lookout provides an elevated view over Anchorage Bay, back towards the town site of Green Head itself.

MILLIGAN ISLAND, GREEN HEAD

Follow the signs from Green Head Road towards the Billy Goat Bay camp site and turn right past the Milligan Island camping nodes to discover this natural archway just off shore. Home to many species of birds, the natural arch offers great sunset photo opportunities.

SOUTH BAY, GREEN HEAD

The South Bay lookout is near Farley Street, with the car park to South Bay with it’s boat launching facility accessed from Ocean View Drive. The lovely Cliff Park is just near the car park, where you will also find a playground and ablution block.

TI TREE LOOKOUT, LEEMAN

Take a drive up to the coastal town of Leeman to visit Ti Tree Lookout, accessed via Thomas Street, just south of the Leeman Jetty. The lookout provides panoramic views over the ocean and nearby beaches.

SAFETY ADVICE FOR CHRISTMAS GIFTS GIVEN TO CHILDREN

With Christmas over for another year, many children are happily enjoying their new gifts.

While it is always exciting for children to receive fun gifts to play with, they may pose some safety risks, so it is a timely reminder for parents to be aware of key safety issues with some products.

Button or coin batteries are found in many toys and novelty gifts that produce light and sound effects, but they are also found in household items such as remote controls, watches, calculators, torches, LED candles and kitchen and bathroom scales.

If a button battery is swallowed by a child and becomes stuck in their throat, an electrical current is immediately triggered by saliva, causing a chemical reaction that can result in severe burns in as little as two hours and can be fatal.

In Australia and globally, there is a growing number of injuries and deaths from button batteries, particularly in children aged 0-5 years, who have a tendency to place small objects in body orifices such as their mouth, ears and nose.

Parents should regularly examine items in their home powered by button batteries, particularly if purchased from overseas as it may not be child-resistant. The compartment that houses button batteries needs to be child-resistant, such as secured with a screw, so a children can’t access it.

If a product becomes damaged or broken, a button battery may come loose and be easily ingested by a curious child. Parents should wrap the button battery in sticky tape to make disposal safer, and immediately dispose of it in an outside bin. New button batteries should also be kept out of sight and out of reach from young children at all times.

Another gift that children may have received for Christmas is a trampoline, but they come with a number of safety risks as well, particularly if they’re not properly maintained.

Trampolines are designed for one child to use at a time and should be checked regularly to make sure the mat doesn’t have holes, the frame is not bent, the leg braces are securely locked and the springs are intact and securely attached at both ends.

Parents should also consider adding safety padding on the frame and springs to avoid injuries if a child accidently hits the frame or springs, as well as a safety net to prevent falling off the trampoline.

For more information about other Christmas gifts that may be a safety risk for children, visit https://www.productsafety. gov.au/news/be-summer-safe-2022. Parents should also consider regularly checking the latest product recalls including items with button batteries on the Product Safety Australia website https://www.productsafety.gov.au/recalls

JURIEN BAY PROGRESS ASSOCIATION

Let’s face it the past year has once again been very tough. The Omicron and its variants BA.4 and BA.5 and resultant lockdowns, masks and vaccine mandates came with a vengeance and Covid is currently still active in our community here in Jurien Bay but despite this Jurien Bay Progress Association has continued to service the local community with enthusiasm and dedication. Enormous thanks go the community members and local organisations that have supported us this year and in particular we acknowledge the Jurien Bay CRC, the staff of the Shire of Dandaragan, our faithful market stall holders and the community members who donated goods for our Garage Sales. A special thanks go to community members if you have supported and patronised our market and other events. We really do appreciate community support.

Even though the year has thrown up some challenges we have successfully navigated our through it and are ready to face any challenges that 2023 might throw at us. As a local organisation we strive to serve our town diligently and this year we have lobbied on behalf of residents for an automatic weather station, safer roads, suitable signage for events and emergency warnings. We donated to the Jurien Bay Volunteer Marine Rescue to assist them with an infrastructure upgrade relating to the arrival of their new vessel. We have held numerous successful community markets and continue to collect second hand furniture and brick-abrat donations for our garage sales. We held an annual free Australia Day Breakfast and a free Family Fun Day in the past year.

We continue to develop our shed for storing our gear and running the Garage Sales. The block around the shed has been levelled and gravel sheeted. We were successful in getting funding through Tronox and the Shire of Dandaragan for the installation of a portable single toilet, 23 000 litre poly water tank for rainwater collection and funding to have electrics and plumbing installed to the portable toilet. This will be a benefit to our members who run the Garage Sale and any community members who attend to purchase second hand furniture.

As a small community organisation, we work hard to promote and put the interest of our town first. All of our activities and events are “Risk Assessed,” and we always have a plan to ensure the safety of those attending, as well as our members organising and attending our events. This year has zoomed by;

however, we intend to do the same amazing things as we did last year and into the future. We serve our community to make it a better place to live.

Just a small reminder to community members and visitors holidaying in Jurien Bay that we have New Year’s Market on Sunday 1st January 2023 at Fauntleroy Park from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon. We also have our free Australia Day Breakfast at Fauntleroy Park from 8:00 am.

Finally, I really must acknowledge the loyal, dedicated, and hardworking Progress Association members who have worked so hard to make all our activities and events successful. Everything we do and everything we are able to achieve rests with our membership. These are the people who make things happen in our community. As an organisation we are always seeking like minded civic citizens to join our association.

ACCESS TO THE ISLAND NATURE RESERVES OF THE TURQUOISE COAST

The island reserves situated off our coastline are unique and fragile, are largely unspoilt in the form of human impacts, and are home to some very rare and endangered fauna.

Some 40 islands are found within the Turquoise Coast area between Lancelin and Dongara with a great number of those situated within the waters of the Jurien Bay Marine Park. All islands of the Turquoise Coast are nature reserves and are set aside specifically for the protection of flora and fauna, with a large proportion being ‘A class’ ranked.

Being offshore islands they are often free from some species of pests and diseases that are prevalent on the mainland, which is why the island nature reserves are set aside for special protection, to lessen the risk of introducing a problem that contributes to irreversible damage.

These beautiful island reserves are attractive to us humans and being only a quick boat ride offshore, setting foot on the clean, unspoilt beaches some of the islands have to offer has been a favourite pass time of locals and visitors to the area for many years.

In recent weeks, the islands have seen an increase in visitation numbers both of tourists and locals alike, coinciding with the warm weather and summer school holidays. This increase in visitation has unfortunately also seen a rise in unlawful activity being detected, and all visitors are reminded that dogs, camping, fires and the taking of any flora or fauna is prohibited and penalties apply.

Sea lions on Essex Rocks Island

Various islands have been identified as home to some of Australia’s most vulnerable species of wildlife including the Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinerea), Fairy Tern (Sternula nereis), Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), White-bellied Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster), Dibbler (Parantechinus apicalis) and the Lancelin Island Skink (Ctenotus lancelini).

Visitors are also reminded that limited access is permitted only to beaches on designated islands and it is an offence to enter the areas beyond the beach. There are some specific islands classed as ‘no access’ zones and for these islands it is unlawful to land and access anywhere within the island reserve.

If you are accessing beaches of the permitted islands on a day trip within the Jurien Bay Marine Park, some of the island reserves are located within sanctuary or special purposes zones. These zones govern what activities are permitted or not permitted including the type of fishing and some species-specific limitations.

Increased patrols by DBCA compliance officers will target unlawful activity and we appeal to visitors to leave your dogs at home and stay only on the beach areas of the permitted islands.

DBCA produces a brochure specific for the Jurien Bay Marine Park which includes the island reserves, that is available from the Parks & Wildlife Service office in Jurien Bay or online at www.dpaw.wa.gov.au/parks

For enquiries relating to other Turquoise Coast island nature reserves, please call the Jurien Bay office on 9688 6000 or come into the office at 67 Bashford Street.

OF THE

ABORIGINAL CALENDAR

Although mainstream education teaches the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, Western Australia’s Noongar Aboriginal people lived by six seasons. These seasons clearly indicate change in weather. Aboriginal culture dates back tens of thousands of years and reveals an astounding knowledge and understanding of the environment.

Through this ancient wisdom, Noongar Aboriginal people (sometimes spelled Nyoongar or Nyungar) lived across the south west of Western Australia. Life was lived according to the six seasons, moving with the availability of various food sources, weather patterns and cultural habits.

The six Noongar Aboriginal Seasons are:

• Birak (December-January)

• Bunuru (February-March)

• Djeran (April-May)

• Makuru (June-July)

• Djilba (August-September)

• Kambarang (October-November)

In December and January, it’s the season of…Birak Birak is known as ‘first summer’ and a time for controlled fire burning. With easterly winds most mornings and sea breezes in the afternoon, communities were known to burn in mosaic patterns. This would flush out game for food and burn out weeds ready for growth of edible plants in Djilba (August/September). Reptiles shed their skins and Banksia flowers are picked for their sweet honey.

In April and May, it’s the season of… Djeran Djeran brings cooler days, a time for building or repairing mia-mias (tents) in preparation for colder weather. Kangaroos were hunted for food and skins. The skins were turned into valuable coats and rugs. With the Emu In The Sky constellation clearly seen within the band of the Milky Way, this signifies the time to search for emu eggs as a prime source of food. Many red flowering gums are in bloom and seeds picked from the Zamia Palm last season and treated, are eaten, along with root bulbs from Bullrushes, frogs, turtles and fish.

In February and March, it’s the season of… Bunuru Bunuru is known as ‘second summer’. Being the hottest time of the year saw the peoples move closer to the coast and rivers for cooling sea breezes. Seafood was a key food source as was marron, gilgies, fish, yams, reeds, and lizards. Fresh water was not as abundant and known water wells and springs were frequented.

In June and July it’s the season of…Makuru

Makuru sees strong winds, storms, and rain. It’s cold and wet. Communities generally moved away from the stormy coast and further inland for more sheltered locations. Travelling was limited and campfires formed the heart of communities, providing warmth and a place to gather for music and dreamtime storytelling. Food changed to inland sources such as larger grazing animals. Nothing was discarded as bones and sinew were used to make tools such as spears and hides were added to shelters or used as robes. Understanding the land and identifying the changing seasons has allowed Aboriginal people to live in harmony with their environment for tens of thousands of years. There was no need to change it. Instead it was respected, adapting to seasonal fluctuations throughout the year. The way of life was respectful to the land and animals and it showed a deep understanding of the natural environment.

LIVING BY THE SIX SEASONS

The night sky also played an important part in day to day life and worked hand in hand with the six seasons. The knowledge of star patterns and dark regions of the night sky represents a calendar that depicts special times of the year. The night sky plays a significant part in cultural beliefs and dreamtime stories.

In October and November, it’s the season of…Kambarang Kambarang means ‘rains decreasing’ and brings warmer days and brilliant blossoms of the Australian Christmas Tree or Moojar. Bark from the tree was often obtained to make shields and the gum that oozes from the wound can be collected and eaten raw as a sweet treat. Many communities moved closer to the coastal wetlands for an abundance of estuary fish, nesting birds and birds’ eggs. Quandong fruit and yams were also collected.

Artist, Rikki Garlett - The beautiful images above were created by Rikki Garlett, a local Ballardong artist who grew up in Northam. Her ambition is to create traditional art, inspired by the stories of her culture shared to her as a child. She sees her art as a way to share knowledge and connect with the community. If you would like Rikki for other projects, please contact Wheatbelt NRM https://www.wheatbeltnrm.org.au/

VENUS, SATURN & THE MOON | 23RD JANUARY

Venus, Saturn and a very thin crescent Moon appear very close together in the western sky. Look for a bright star-like object low to the west. That’s Venus. Above Venus is the Moon and close below is a second star-like object, Saturn!

In August and September, it’s the season of… Djilba Djilba is a colourful time due to an abundance of wildflowers emerging with the warmer days. It is noted as a transitional time of the seasons with still cooler weather interspersed with warmer days. Food sources continued to be grazing animals such as kangaroo and emu but possum was also hunted. Traditional water sources were replenished and family groups often hunted together. With the warmer weather the flower stalks of the Grass Trees (Balgas) start to emerge.

Use the Quasar Publishing image above as a guide. To find out more about what to see in the night sky, grab a copy of their latest Astronomy Australia almanac at at Quasar Publishing.

• When to look: After sunset, January the 23rd

• Which direction to look: West

Something Interesting: Because Venus is closer to the Sun than the Earth, Venus goes through phases like our Moon. Depending on the position of Venus relative to us, the planet can appear as anything from a thin crescent to an almost full disk!

GEOCACHING AROUND JURIEN BAY

Geocaching is a treasure hunt the whole family can get involved in and enjoy. Using map coordinates and a GPS enabled device, (your phone, for example) you can find a geocache near your home, in the city, in the bush or in Antarctica. Geocaches come in all shapes and sizes too. You can find a tiny little one as small as your fingernail, or a huge geocache with exciting ‘treasures’ inside. It can be as easy or as hard as you like to make it. You can drive up to your geocache and spot it from the car, or you can choose to hike for miles up and down mountains or in the sand, in search of that elusive container. Now get out there and have some fun, but beware, it can be addictive!

How do you go geocaching in Jurien Bay?

Head to the Geocaching Australia website, www. geocaching.com.au

• Choose a geocache - Click on Western Australia on the map, zoom in to the Jurien Bay area, then select a geocache.

• Then enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS device or load the geocache into a geocaching app on your smart phone. Use your device to navigate to the geocache. Sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location.

What are the rules of geocaching?

• Find the geocache

• Log your name in the log book

• If you take something from a geocache replace it with something of equal or greater value

• Log your adventure online

What do I need to go geocaching?

• You will need a GPS device or a GPS-enabled smartphone so that you can navigate to the cache

• To log your adventure online you will need to create an account that identifies your geocaching name

• Access to Geocaching Australia is free and open so no payment is needed to go geocaching

Where are geocaches hidden?

Geocaches are hidden all over the world. Geocachers will hide caches in locations that are important to them as well as locations that may require a special skills such as tree climbing, abseiling or kayaking.

Geocache locations are very diverse and may be at your local park, at the end of a long hike, underwater or on the side of a city street.

What sort of geocaches can be found around Jurien Bay?

There are lots of different types of geocaches. Theses are some of the ones you’ll find in and around Jurien Bay, Cervantes, and Green Head:

• A TRADITIONAL cache is a type of cache that has a single published waypoint which is the location of the cache. They are called “traditional” because the first caches were of this form. A Traditional cache is likely to involve a straightforward walk to Ground Zero and a search for the cache.

• A VIRTUAL cache is a type of cache that has no physical container. This is usually done because it would be inappropriate to place a physical container at the location. Reasons for this include:

• Area is of historical importance

• Area of cultural sensitivity

• It’s an environmentally sensitive location

• The land owner does not want caches left there

• There is generally no room for a decent sized cache

• The MYSTERY cache (also known as an Unknown or Puzzle cache) is a “catch-all” type for caches which don’t fit the definitions of the other cache types. Examples are caches involving puzzles you need to solve to determine the actual coordinates, sending the cache owner a verification codeword found inside the logbook, performing some task at the cache location, or writing the online log in a format or with content that satisfies the cache requirements. Sometimes the hider may decide to declare a mystery cache just to add an element of surprise, or to remove any pre-conceived ideas about the hunt.

• A WEBCAM cache is a virtual cache that has an Internet webcam. Finders are typically required to use the webcam to take a photo of themselves and post it in their log.

• A TRIG POINT (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself. Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

Over eighty percent of Australia’s population lives within 50 kilometres of the coast. With this in mind, it’s impor tant that we learn about our coast, so we can also look a er it!

We have over 12,500 kilometres of coastline in Western Australia to explore, with almost half our coastline made up of sandy beaches. Other areas along our coast include rocky shores, estuaries, mangroves, mud flats and sand flats.

When exploring our coastline, it’s always impor tant to be prepared so you can make the most of your beachcombing experience.

Here are a few helpful tips:

• Wear sun protective clothing, including a hat and sunscreen.

• Take a bottle of water – it can get hot out in the sun!

• Take a hand lens or magnifying glass for closer inspection.

• Be careful when picking items up –you never know what could be hiding inside, or what might sting you!

• Help the environment and take any rubbish safely home with you – recycle or place it in the bin.

• Take your camera to help you to capture memories of your finds.

• Leave marine life on the beach where you found it – each plant and animal plays an impor tant par t in the environment.

• Leave only your footprints…

Beach Pledge

Before you head down to the beach –take the Beach Pledge!

I will help protect the beach by using pathways.

I will be careful where I walk, to avoid treading on plants and animals.

I will discover many things on the beach, but leave the plants and animals where I found them.

I will care for the beach by placing my rubbish in the bin and recycle where possible.

I will remember my experience by memories and photos, and leave only my footprints.

CONDUCTING A BEACHCOMBING FIELD TRIP

Conducting your own beachcombing field trip is as simple as following the steps below.

the beach. Refer to Danger Zone fact sheet for further information about potentially dangerous marine life.

2. Define the area of exploration – point out sand dune vegetation, high and low tide watermarks, sea wrack or strand line if present, and other features. Advise students to stay off rocks and out of water. It may help to divide the beach into three zone using the beach profile:

• Sand dunes – do not walk on the sand dune vegetation to avoid degradation.

• Beach – follow the strand line (the line of algae along the beach at the high tide mark) to discover hidden treasures on the beach. Or sort through the sea wrack to see what you can find.

• Swash zone – students should avoid this area unless the relevant water-based excursion guidelines are adhered to.

OUTLINE

When on location, before commencing your beach walk, consider the following:

1. Reinforce the various safety messages to your participants, as discussed in your preexcursion activities.

• It’s recommended that participants wear suitable footwear on the beach and avoid bare feet (due to glass and other items which may be on the beach).

• Do not pick up glass, syringes or other potentially dangerous items.

• Do not pick up bluebottles, as their stinging cells can still be active, even when they are washed up on

3. Define the exploration time permitted, e.g. 20 minutes.

4. Split the group into smaller groups with a parent helper – you may also like to ensure participants have a buddy at all times to assist with supervision.

Exploration time! Choose a goal for your participants depending on their level of understanding.

EXAMPLE ONE:

Using the Alphabet Beach Walk activity sheet, see how many natural and man-made items you can find on the beach.

EXAMPLE TWO:

Ask participants to collect at least one plant, one animal (or remains of an animal) and one manmade object (or marine debris).

For the purpose of this activity these broad terms apply as follows:

• Plant – a living thing that has the ability to produce its own food, has ‘root-like’ and ‘leaflike’ structures, e.g. seagrasses, algae and terrestrial plants (e.g. spinifex, or branches and nuts from nearby trees).

• Animal – a living thing, or the remains of a living thing, that cannot produce its own food. It has body parts developed for feeding and generally has external structures to assist in movement, e.g. cuttlebone, shell and seahorse.

• Marine debris – litter or rubbish that has found its way to the sea, either from a landbased or ocean-based source. This includes man-made items such plastic, rubber, glass and fishing line.

EXAMPLE THREE:

See if you can find:

• the three different types of algae (seaweed). Beware: the sun does bleach the algae – changing the colour, which might confuse some participants;

• a piece of seagrass;

• an animal or remains of an animal; and

• any man-made items.

Have a plastic bag available to collect the rubbish, but be careful of sharps. If participants are unsure of an animal or any items they find on the beach, they should ask an adult before they pick it up.

Once the exploration time has finished, regroup participants to discuss what they have found at a designated location on the beach.

Remember to complete the Beachcombing Datasheet –‘physical features’ component, prior to the exploration time.

DISCUSSION AFTER EXPLORATION TIME

Identification and classification of items found on your beachcombing field trip are an essential component of your participants’ understanding and learning.

After the exploration time has finished, use hulahoops (or draw shapes in the sand) to sort (or classify) items found. Choose the classification level appropriate to the age group and level of understanding of your participants.

This can be achieved through a simple staged approach:

1. Classify as natural and man-made items.

2. Classify into plants, animals and man-made items (or marine debris).

3. Classify into relevant kingdoms (Animalia, Plantae and Protista) and man-made items.

4. Classify into relevant phyla and classes where appropriate.

Using the Beachcombers Field Guide, identify organisms found and complete the Beachcombing Datasheet – ‘beach specimen list’.

Once you have classified and identified your beachcombing items, discuss why classification is important.

You may also like to include the following concepts in your discussion:

HABITAT

If possible, identify the various habitats where the coastal and marine life is found.

• Are you walking along a sandy beach or a limestone rocky shore?

• Are there any known or visible limestone or coral reefs, or seagrass meadows close by?

• Have some of the items you found come from a terrestrial (land-based) habitat?

HUMAN IMPACT

Discuss the man-made items that you found along the beach.

• How did they get there?

• Where did they come from?

• What impacts do they have on the marine and coastal environment?

You may also choose to use the Tangaroa Blue Ocean Care Society, Marine Debris Identification Manual and Debris Collection Datasheet to assist in looking at the marine debris found along the beach.

COASTAL PROCESSES

Coastal processes play an important part in shaping our coastline. There are some additional activities within the kit that you may choose to conduct with your participants, depending on your area of interest. Check out the Coastal Processes section of the kit for further information.

At the completion of your beachcombing discussion, it’s important to leave all plant and animal life (dead or alive) on the beach, as it all plays an important part in the coastal ecosystem.

Don’t forget to take the rubbish home and leave nothing but your footprints behind!

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:

The effects of site choice on beachcombing Complete the beachcombing field trip at different sites –compare your findings.

Discuss if the type of coastal habitat (and adjacent habitats) and/or manmade features have an effect on your beachcombing experience.

Seasonal impacts on beachcombing Complete the beachcombing field trip at different times of the year, at the same site. Observe and record how the beach changes over time.

Discuss the diversity of organisms you have found on the beach – are some animals seasonal? Are the same levels of rubbish present all year, or does this vary depending on the season? How does the coastline change throughout the year?
