WEDGE ISLAND HOSTS RANGERS GRADUATION DAY The past three years have seen the Midwest Aboriginal Rangers working hard in gaining qualifications in Conservation and Land Management.

In early December, NACC Aboriginal Administration Trainee Taj and Midwest Aboriginal Ranger Program Coordinator Bianca headed to Wedge Island to attend a Rangers graduation ceremony!

The day commended Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) rangers as well as former Kwelena Mambakort Aboriginal Corporation (KMAC) trainees, Caleb Shaw and Jordan Jackamarra, for achieving their Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management.

Before the presentation commenced, Yued elder Charlie Shaw performed a Welcome to Country followed by a smoking ceremony.

This program is supported by NACC NRM through funding from the National Indigenous Australians Agency.

JERRY AND SUE DAWSON LEAVE JURIEN BAY Jerry Dawson, an Executive Committee member of the Jurien Bay RSL sub branch and his wife Sue have left our sunny shores and returned to the UK. Jerry was the local RSL’s lively entertainment officer and provided much entertainment to the RSL even without an event. Both Jerry and Sue will be missed by those in the RSL Jurien Sub branch and the Jurien Community. We wish them well.

ACCESS TO THE ISLAND NATURE RESERVES OF THE TURQUOISE COAST The island reserves situated off our coastline are unique and fragile, are largely unspoilt in the form of human impacts and are home to some very rare and endangered fauna.

Some 40 islands are found within the Turquoise Coast area between Lancelin and Dongara with a great number of those situated within the waters of the Jurien Bay Marine Park. All islands of the Turquoise Coast are nature reserves and are set aside specifically for the protection of flora and fauna, with a large proportion being ‘A class’ ranked.

Being offshore islands they are often free from some species of pests and diseases that are prevalent on the mainland, which is why the island nature reserves are set aside for special protection, to lessen the risk of introducing a problem that contributes to irreversible damage.

These beautiful island reserves are attractive to us humans and being only a quick boat ride offshore, setting foot on the clean, unspoilt beaches some of the islands have to offer has been a favourite pastime of locals and visitors to the area for many years.

In recent weeks, the islands have seen an increase in visitation numbers both of tourists and locals alike, coinciding with the warm weather and summer school holidays. This increase in visitation has unfortunately also seen a rise in unlawful activity being detected, and all visitors are reminded that dogs, camping, fires and the taking of any flora or fauna is prohibited and penalties apply.

Sea lions on Essex Rocks Island

Various islands have been identified as home to some of Australia’s most vulnerable species of wildlife including the Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinerea), Fairy Tern (Sternula nereis), Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), White-bellied Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster), Dibbler (Parantechinus apicalis) and the Lancelin Island Skink (Ctenotus lancelini).

Visitors are also reminded that limited access is permitted only to beaches on designated islands and it is an offence to enter the areas beyond the beach.

There are some specific islands classed as ‘no access’ zones and for these islands it is unlawful to land and access anywhere within the island reserve.

If you are accessing beaches of the permitted islands on a day trip within the Jurien Bay Marine Park, some of the island reserves are located within sanctuary or special purposes zones. These zones govern what activities are permitted or not permitted including the type of fishing and some species-specific limitations.

Increased patrols by DBCA compliance officers will target unlawful activity and we appeal to visitors to leave your dogs at home and stay only on the beach areas of the permitted islands.

DBCA produces a brochure specific for the Jurien Bay Marine Park which includes the island reserves, that is available from the Parks & Wildlife Service office in Jurien Bay or online at www.dpaw.wa.gov.au/parks.

JURIEN BAY PROGRESS ASSOCIATION INC The Jurien Bay Progress Association has a role in the town to develop community projects and to lobby for change and resources for our community.

At our meeting of 3 February 2021 the following discussions and decisions were made:

We continue to operate our Garage Sales every first and third Saturday of each month from 8-11.00am; as well as our regular Community Markets on the foreshore at Fauntleroy Park.

Progress Association has written to the Shire of Dandaragan CEO regarding the lack of suitable advertising for events. As it happens, the Shire of Dandaragan already have a budget item in place for this to occur, with the outcome dependent on several factors pertaining to logistics and further consultation with various bodies.

The town noticeboard is often unavailable for the advertising of all events occurring within the town. It is often the case that events cannot be advertised on the notice board. The current notice board requires staff time to lower the board, insert the message/s sometimes different on each side, which is not easily seen, and re-erect the board. This is time that must be taken from other duties.

The Progress Association agrees that an illuminated digital notice board be erected on Bashford street.

The messages could be loaded electronically, via a Bluetooth system. This outcome would ensure that event advertising, as well as any other information such as road closures and fire events could be communicated to people. A welcome initiative by our Shire Another recent project in the pipeline is to replace the town lookout with a newer lookout in a more suitable location. The current lookout view is obscured by unsightly towers and was erected on Water Corp land. A new location has been selected and, with Shire assistance, an approach has been made to the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage by the Shire on behalf of Progress to dedicate a road within a new road corridor which currently follows the fire break around the cemetery. This is looking promising and our thanks go to the Shire for its assistance.

Another issue we can lobby on is the lack of reliable weather forecasting. Our weather is predicted from readings taken at Jurien Bay once a day and information from the automatic weather station at Badgingarra which is 49 kilometres away. The current wind speed and direction is estimated as the wind anemometer has been out of service for some years. An automated station would guarantee a better weather forecast for Jurien Bay.

LEGAL AID NOW AVAILABLE IN JURIEN BAY Legal Aid WA (LAWA) has expanded its virtual legal services to five new locations following the success of its initial office network.

More than 1400 West Australians have accessed LAWA’s existing virtual office services since the first ten were launched across metropolitan and regional WA in July 2019.

The five new virtual offices opened in January and early February 2021 in Busselton, Fremantle, Kwinana, Rockingham and Jurien Bay. Virtual offices use face to face technology to remotely connect a Legal Aid lawyer with clients who require advice, providing valuable face to face contact for West Australians who face barriers of remoteness, mobility, disability or safety concerns.

LAWA has worked with local community agencies to establish each office, enabling people to book an appointment at their local service to use the technology.

Legal Aid WA Solicitor Casey Johnston said the success of the first ten virtual offices showed the value of connecting people with a lawyer in a face-to-face setting.

“Face to face legal advice helps to build trust and rapport, which can contribute to successful legal outcomes,” she said.

“LAWA recognised that sadly, there were many vulnerable West Australians who were not able to access this due to them living remotely or being unable to travel to a city centre.

“Our staff will assist in establishing the video connection, then leave the room so that confidentiality is assured.”

The new Jurien Bay service will be offering legal advice appointments with Legal Aid WA in relation to Family, Civil and Criminal law matters including: Criminal law • Criminal offences in the Magistrates and Children’s Court Civil Law: • Debts • Mortgage stress • Elder abuse • Guardianship and administration • National Disability Insurance (NDIS) appeals • Criminal injuries compensation • Motor vehicle property damage • Extraordinary Driver’s Licence • Removal of life disqualification Family Law: • Domestic Violence • Separation and divorce • Violence restraining orders • Children’s issues • Protection and care

“Thanks to the first ten virtual offices, we’ve been able to connect lawyers to 1,417 clients who otherwise would not have been able to access face to face legal advice at all due to various barriers.

“The launch of the next five offices builds on this work by taking legal advice to people who would otherwise be hard to reach and removing the barriers many West Australians face.”

Ms Johnston said the location of the five new offices had been decided based on areas where LAWA identified a need for legal services.

The Board of Management and staff of the Jurien Bay CRC are excited to be able to assist in making this service possible in Jurien Bay. “Access to legal advice in Jurien Bay has been difficult, if not impossible, for members of our community until now,” Manager Sue Campbell explains.

“The provision of this service compliments other services that we are providing using video conferencing, such as financial counselling, which are provided in safe, secure and private offices.

FEBRUARY IS OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH During February’s Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Cancer Council WA’s Wheatbelt Regional Education Officer, Melissa Pickering is urging women in the Wheatbelt region to remain ever vigilant, as ovarian cancer symptoms were vague and women often think they are caused by other conditions and may ignore them. Ms Pickering said that women should pay attention to any symptoms that are unusual for you, new, persistent or troublesome. “If you have any of the symptoms and they happen on most days for three weeks or more, particularly if you’re over 50 or have a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer, go to your doctor and get a check-up,” she said.

Symptoms can include, swollen lower tummy (abdomen) or bloating, feeling full quickly, pain in the tummy, needing to wee more often than usual, harder poo, loss of appetite, indigestion or nausea. “More research is required to better understand the causes of ovarian cancer, but there are steps we can all take

A grand total of 112mm; well over the average total rainfall for February of 14.6mm and a new record for the wettest February day, the previous being 98.2mm on the 12th February 1986. BLACK MARKET LOBSTER SALES ATTRACT $70,000 IN FINES FOR LEEMAN FAMILY Fines totalling more than $70,000 were handed out to three members of a Leeman fishing family, for illegally selling rock lobsters on the black market. The trio, who did not have a commercial fishing licence, sold the illegally caught lobsters to undercover Fisheries officers on four occasions, in an undercover sting operation.

the Magistrate did not ban them from being on a recreational vessel, an additional penalty that the Prosecutor had asked for.

Two fisheries officers were assigned to the case after receiving credible intelligence of illegal lobster sales in Leeman. They were sold a total of four kilograms of lobsters between June 2018 and April 2019, while also being provided with advice on how to avoid being caught with their purchases.

The Magistrate was concerned that the family appeared to know of other sales of illegally caught rock lobster, which undermines the sustainability of the industry. The fines should cause others to think twice about selling lobster illegally however, and show that Fisheries officers will follow up on intelligence received in relation to such sales.

The trio pleaded guilty shortly after they were charged in December 2020, however they all failed to appear in the Geraldton Magistrate’s Court in January 2021 and were convicted in their absence.

The son was fined $32,410.70 plus court costs, while his father was fined $18,815.70 and his mother was fined $20,620.70.

The Magistrate found that the family were motivated by profit, and intentionally broke the law. The recordings presented by the Prosecutor included the family members specifically telling the undercover Fisheries officers to “keep it quiet”, and the fact that the sales had continued over a ten-month period was found to represent a high level of offending.

#CREATUREFEATURE – TILIQUA RUGOSE (BOBTAIL LIZARD) The iconic Australian Bobtail Lizard is known by many other names including sleepy lizard and shingleback lizard.

These slow movers are commonly seen during warmer months within the Northern Agricultural Region. The word rugose translates to wrinkled or rough in Latin, referring to their raised, shingle-like scales.

Bobtails are mostly brown in colour, sometimes with yellow spots and a pale belly. They have short, stumpy tails and a triangular head. While females are larger in size, males tend to have stockier builds and larger heads.

When Bobtails feel threatened, they will open their bright pink mouths and extend a dark blue tongue and hiss.

Often found in semi-arid habitats and coastal parts of Western Australia and South Australia, these lizards are seen from Shark Bay to the plains of the Great Dividing Range.

As omnivores, Bobtails will eat various plants and animals, preying on slow-moving animals like snails and beetles. These are easily crushed by bobtails using their strong jaws. They also enjoy eating a wide range of flowers and vegetation, frequenting gardens and vegetable patches.

Between September and November each year, Bobtails re-establish their monogamous breeding pairs.

Pregnancy in these animals usually lasts between 3 and 5 months, with most babies born in the warmer months between December and April. Young are born fully formed and self-sufficient, often in two’s or threes.

Bobtails are quite prone to vehicle strikes as a consequence of their generally slow movement. They can also fall victim to the deadly upper respiratory tract infection known as ‘Bobtail Flu’. These lizards can survive without food for months at a time as they have a fat store in their tail.

1080 BAITING: A MUST FOR PEST CONTROL BUT A RISK TO DOMESTIC PETS The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development advises that essential baiting programs using 1080 are carried out all year round across the state. While these programs are aimed at controlling wild dogs, foxes, feral cats, feral pigs and rabbits, they do pose a risk to domestic dogs.

Keeping your family’s best friend safe is your responsibility. If you have to take your dog with you when you travel in WA’s regional areas, keep it on a leash or use a muzzle. The safest option is to not take your dog at all, but leave it in the safe hands of a carer or at a boarding kennel.

1080 baiting is essential for pastoralists and farmers, and to conserve our wildlife. Without baiting, stock are targeted by wild dogs and can be killed, causing emotional and financial distress to producers.

Introduced predators also eat many native fauna.

Over the past 100 years, more mammals have become extinct in Australia than anywhere else in the world.

ABOUT 1080 1080 is a naturally occurring poison found in 40 plant species. Western Australia has 39 of the 40 plant species growing naturally in the south-west. Native species have developed a tolerance to 1080 making it

a more selective poison pest control option. However, your domestic pet is not safe without your help.

Baiting of pastoral leases, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) reserves, unallocated Crown Land and freehold farms can be carried out at any time. The poison baits remain toxic for many months. You must exercise caution when working within or visiting these areas. Warning signs are placed at entrance points on all land where baiting is being carried out and at other relevant places where applicable on pastoral, DBCA, and unallocated Crown Land.

However, do not rely upon the presence of warning signs. Signage may not be in the immediate vicinity and can be weather damaged, removed or destroyed.

Please consult with individual pastoralists, DBCA and/ or farmers prior to entering their lands. Domestic pets must be kept close and under control at all times. If your pet wanders when you are travelling throughout regional WA, you may need to consider a muzzle for your pet.

CTRL+ALT+DELETE LASER PRINTER OR INKJET: WHICH PRINTER IS BEST? While the quantity of paper I print on has dropped over the years – especially in my own case where far more of my writing these days appears online rather than in printed format – there’s still a solid need for many of us to own a printer of some sort.

While there are some esoteric print technologies out there using things like solid inks or other printable materials – I once got taken through a factory tour by one printer maker where they showed, and I’m not making this up, a printer that could make materials to be cut into handbags, making it effectively a handbag printer – for most of us, the choice falls between laser printers and inkjet printers.

Inkjet printers are pretty easy to explain – the name suggests exactly what they do, using a small jet to squirt ink onto a page as your needs dictate – while laser printers heat up a dried powder – the “toner” in your toner cartridge – to attach it to the printed page.

Historically, the choice was very simple indeed. If you wanted a low quantity of printing, or you wanted to print in colour, your best choice was an inkjet printer. They were cheap to buy, although less so if you did end up printing a lot, because the cost of those inkjet cartridges was quite prohibitive. It absolutely wasn’t uncommon to find that you could grab a new inkjet printer for less than the cost of a set of replacement cartridges, although some makers did take advantage of that by putting lowercapacity “starter” cartridges into boxed printer units.

If you wanted to print a lot, and especially if you were printing text-heavy documents in volume, laser was the way to go.

For some models of laser and injket printer those observations still hold true, but not universally so, and

especially if you’re looking at the consumer end of the market.

What we’ve seen in injkets, for example, is the rise of printers that don’t rely specifically on inkjet cartridges, but instead the use of side-mounted ink tanks. Vendors such as Canon and Epson make these under various brands, and they’re quite a good option if you need intermittent colour or photo printing, but you’re not so sure as to when you might need that volume.

I’ve been using an Epson ink tank printer in my home office for the past couple of years, and while the model I have was originally pitched for a small office rather than a sole user, it’s done me very well in terms of lasting ink and quality. While I’m nicely situated for inks right now, a quick online check suggests a full set of inks would set me back around $70. That’s not free, obviously – but then in three or so years, I’ve not needed to change the inks yet at all, so that’s an investment that’s way, way cheaper than those smaller inkjet cartridges, and more environmentally friendly too.

The flipside of that equation is laser printing. At one time, if you wanted a cheap laser, it would be monochrome and the quality would be only average, while toner costs would be quite high. Sure, it was fast, but it wasn’t great.

These days you don’t have to spend thousands to get a very good, highly capable laser printer for both monochrome and colour work. If you don’t need complex colours or photo reproduction in your work, a laser can often outshoot a comparable inkjet, especially on regular paper. If you are in need of lots of photo printing then better stock paper will give you a much more pleasing result – but then again, you’d still generally be better off with a more photo-capable inkjet in that case.

If you only print a very small amount indeed, or have need of larger format printing there are models available that can handle that kind of work, but it could also be a better bet financially to consider using an external print provider – such as the printing solutions available through your local Officeworks store – to meet your printing needs.

Leader Mia Davies made the $100 million commitment - the largest ever for environmental initiatives in regional WA - in Albany today alongside local landcare and catchment groups.

“Caring for the environment is embedded in our regional communities and The Nationals are committed to supporting the groups and individuals that manage, restore and conserve our valuable land and water assets,” Ms Davies said.

“You can support the economy and help the environment by investing in job-creating projects that build more environmentally sustainable and resilient regional communities.”

Ms Davies said The Nationals would commit $100 million of Royalties for Regions over five years towards environmental initiatives across two funding streams if elected to Government at the 2021 State election.

“We will increase funding for regional NRM initiatives to $45 million - a $1.8 million boost to $9 million per year, to help organisations like South Coast NRM plan and implement projects that protect and enhance our environment,” Ms Davies said.

“Investing in our natural resources helps primary industry, tourism and other regional industries become more sustainable through managing biosecurity threats, enhancing our waterways and adapting to changes in the climate and trade markets.

“NRMs are already leaders in regional land and coast care but the funding they receive is regularly oversubscribed, limiting the excellent work they do.”

The Nationals WA will also invest $55 million to create a Land and Sea Restoration Fund (LSRF), which will significantly increase funding for carbon farming initiatives, support the creation of a blue carbon industry with the potential to create 3000 new regional jobs.

Nationals Deputy Leader and environment spokesperson Shane Love said the LSRF would be overseen by an independent board of climate researchers, land care, conservation, farmer and Aboriginal groups that offer unique insight and understanding into their regions.

“The LSRF will deliver job creating programs and projects located in the regions, linked to carbon sequestration and focused on improving land and sea environmental health,” he said. “We’ll also continue to support the Carbon for Conservation initiative to allow the private sector to implement carbon farming in the State’s national parks and reserves.”

SCAMWATCH ADVICE FOR OLDER AUSTRALIANS Scams target people of all ages and backgrounds, however, some scams are more likely to target older people.

WHY OLDER AUSTRALIANS ARE AT RISK Often older Australians have more money and accumulated wealth than younger people, making them an attractive target for a scammer.

Scammers will also scour dating sites and social media for older Australians who have recently divorced or lost a long term partner, taking advantage of their inexperience with these sites and their often vulnerable emotional state.

Older Australians may also be seen by scammers as generally less internet and computer savvy or familiar with new technology.

COMMON SCAMS TARGETING OLDER AUSTRALIANS • Inheritance scams These scams offer you the false promise of an inheritance to trick you into parting with your money or sharing your bank or credit card details.

• Rebate scams Rebate scams try to convince you that you are entitled to a rebate or reimbursement from the government, a bank or trusted organisation.

• Unexpected prize & lottery scams Unexpected prize and lottery scams work by asking you to pay some sort of fee in order to claim your prize or winnings from a competition or lottery you never entered.

• Dating & romance Scammers take advantage of people looking for romantic partners, often via dating websites, apps or social media by pretending to be prospective companions. They play on emotional triggers to get you to provide money, gifts or personal details.

• Investment scams Investment scams involve getting you or your business to part with money on the promise of a questionable financial opportunity.

DOOR-TO-DOOR AND HOME MAINTENANCE SCAMS Older Australians may also be more susceptible to door-todoor and home maintenance scams. While many legitimate businesses sell things door-to-door, scammers also use this approach. These types of scams generally involve promoting goods and services that are of poor quality, or not delivered at all.

Scammers may try and sell you gardening or roofing services, and then bill you for additional work that you did not agree to. Sometimes they may pretend to conduct a survey so they can get your personal details, or to disguise their sales pitch

until they have been talking to you for a while.

Some of the warning signs you may be dealing with a scammer include: • they visit late at night, or visit you again after you have said ‘no’ • they don’t show you any identification or give you any contact information, written quotes or receipts • they might demand that you decide to accept their offer on the spot • you may be asked for a deposit or full payment and can only pay by cash or credit card • they fail to tell you about your legal rights, including rights to a cooling-off period.

Don’t be pressured into making a decision. Scammers often try to create a sense of urgency through short deadlines, fake emergencies or threats of legal action.

Scammers will often ask you to use an unusual payment method, including preloaded debit cards, gift cards, iTunes cards or virtual currency such as Bitcoin.

Verify the identity of the contact by calling the relevant organisation directly – find them through an independent source such as a phone book or online search. Do not use the contact details provided in the message sent to you.

Don’t respond to phone calls or emails offering financial advice or opportunities – just hang up or delete the email.

Always do your own research before you invest money and check the company or scheme is licensed on ASIC’s MoneySmart website.

Be wary of people you meet social media or online dating sites who after just a few contacts profess strong feelings for you and try to move you away from the site and communicate via chat or email.

CONSUMER WATCH A GUIDE TO GRANNY FLATS Creating ‘one big happy family’ might be the dream when it comes to multigenerational living, but in reality there’s a lot to weigh-up before entering into a granny flat arrangement.

If you’re wondering where you’ll spend your twilight years, a granny flat interest in your adult child’s home might seem like a win-win – you can downsize to a smaller property, while being on-hand to provide and receive support from your family.

But even when families do get along well, living together can create new issues and challenges. When working out what is right for you, it is important to think long-term and to remember that this will be your ‘home for life’, so all the pieces need to fit.

With that in mind, Consumer Protection’s free and independent service, the Seniors Housing Advisory Centre (SHAC), has created a new guide about granny flats that’s aimed at helping seniors decide whether this type of arrangement would be suitable for them.

The ‘Moving in with your family’ guide examines the things seniors and their families should consider before taking that step, including the importance of having ‘hard chats’

about worst-case scenarios and working out upfront how expenses would be divided.

It’s vital that seniors protect their interests, so the guide recommends seeking expert independent legal and financial advice, and points to some useful resources that may assist along the way.

Once a decision is made to co-habit, the publication examines the next steps that should occur, including formalising the arrangement with a lawyer and examples of what should be put into writing. It also points to the importance of having ongoing regular discussions about finances, responsibilities and ‘what if ’ scenarios.

Given there are so many important points to consider, a handy check-list has been included to cover many aspects of what to consider about your day-to-day living arrangements will look like and what happens if things change in the future.

DON’T BE BLIND TO CORD DANGER We like to think our homes are a safe space for our families, but sometimes the biggest dangers are lurking where you might least expect them.

Strong penalties apply for those who break the law, including fines of up to $220,000 for an individual or $1.1 million for a business or body corporate.

Tragically, free-hanging cords from window coverings like curtains and blinds have been responsible for the deaths and injuries of many Australian children, including a twoyear-old girl who died after being strangled by a blind cord at her Queensland home late last year.

So whether at home or on holiday, you should check every room to make sure loose or looped blind cords are fixed out of reach so that children are not in danger.

With children spending more time at home recently, the young child’s death is a grim reminder for parents and carers to be vigilant of the dangers inside the home and holiday accommodation.

Young children often like to climb onto furniture to look out the window, so if they can reach the blind or curtain cords, they may quickly become entangled in them, lose their footing and suffer strangulation or serious injuries.

All looped cords must be designed and installed so as to remain firmly attached to a wall or other structure specified in the installation instructions when subjected to a tension force of 70 N applied in any direction for 10 seconds, and to prevent the possibility of a cord forming a loop 220mm or longer at a height of less than 1.6 metres above floor level.

It is also important to make sure that children can’t reach blind cords from their cot, highchair or other furniture.

When installing new blinds or curtains, a tie-down/cleat should be used that is not easy to remove from the wall but would come out if significant weight was applied. Safer still, consider doing away with cords altogether by opting for wands instead.

Burnout often stems from overwork and 2021 is a good time to reset your boundaries. The disruption of the pandemic has one silver lining, in that society as a whole has some changed expectations about where people work and when.

Take a break Firstly, it is likely that you need a complete break to help you recover. Try to take a holiday from your business — ideally one on which you are not contactable by phone or email, except for emergencies.

Identify and tackle stress triggers While you have some distance, list the things that are causing the most stress to you and figure out ways of meeting your goals differently. For example, if being available to clients on phone, social media and email at all hours makes it impossible to switch off, set some boundaries (and communicate these to your clients if necessary). JOBLINK 5 WAYS TO EASE YOUR INTERVIEW ANXIETY You’ve got an interview coming up and those butterflies in your stomach are really starting to take flight.

It’s very normal to feel nervous before a job interview. And in times where just getting an interview is a challenge, there can be added pressure to perform perfectly.

Researching the organisation or business beforehand helps you feel more confident about what they do and what they look for in their employees. There are different factors to look into when researching a company, but generally you’ll want to have an understanding of its history, culture, mission, achievements and hiring process.

But if you do land an interview, there are things you can do to prevent that nervous energy from getting the better of you.

In fact, feelings of anxiety can actually help your performance in an interview if you learn how to harness them, says SEEK’s Resident Psychologist Sabina Read.

Finally, you want to familiarise yourself with all aspects of the role. Read through the job description carefully and make sure you understand what’s expected. If you’re not sure about anything in particular, you can always ask some questions at the end of the interview.

3. Release your nervous energy In order to make sure that you don’t let your nervous energy get the better of you on the day of the interview, Read suggests doing an activity that’s calming or will help you let that nervous energy go. “Go for a run, meditate or do something that you really enjoy,” she says. This will help you relax and refocus.

4. Breathe “If you feel nervous in the middle of the interview stop and take a deep breath,” Read says. It might sound overly simple, but it can really help calm you down. Breathing deeply helps slow down our thoughts, reduces their intensity and quietens our nervous response.

5 WAYS TO MANAGE YOUR INTERVIEW ANXIETY According to Read, there are five effective ways to handle your feelings of anxiety and nervousness before or during an interview.

1. Reduce external pressures One of the easiest ways to bring your anxiety level down before an interview is to minimise any external pressures.

“Things like working out what you’re going to wear and how you’re going to get to the interview sound really simple, but they go a long way to alleviating additional stress,” Read says.

2. Prepare for success Getting organised is a great way to help you feel calm and confident going into an interview. There are lots of aspects involved in interviewing for a position, but there are simple ways to feel on top of what’s to come.

One of the best ways to prepare is by practising answers to common interview questions. You can use SEEK’s practice interview builder to see the different types of questions employers tend to ask. Use the days leading up to your

What to do if your vessel is broken into, stolen or damaged:

BOAT MEMBERS: Have you changed any of your details? Maybe sold your boat, or bought a new one, changed cars or trailers, or do not wish to continue as a member, please let us know. When a boat is overdue, we need to search the marina car park (or another launching site) to see if the vehicle or trailer are there and we do not want to be wasting valuable time searching for a vehicle or trailer with the incorrect details. It is important that we have your correct details on file, so please help us to update our records.

Attention all Boaties: A reminder to please check your VHF Radio to ensure that you are operating on 25 Watts and not 1 Watt. You will need to press the HI/LO button on your handset to adjust. 25 Watts provides a much better reception for broadcasting.

To prevent the theft of your vessel or property: With a few incidents of property theft occurring recently, the following are some basic steps that we can all take to protect our property from theft as follows: • record all details of your boat and equipment – including serial numbers – and keep this list in a safe place.

• Engrave any valuable items – you can use your driver’s licence number.

• Mark your dinghy with an identifying feature, such as your driver’s licence number.

• Fit an anti-theft device to your trailer.

• Fit a quality lock to your boat.

• Remove valuable items from your boat when you leave it unattended. If you have to leave valuables on board, ensure they are out-of-sight.

• If you are leaving your vehicle parked on shore while you go boating, please make certain that you leave NO valuables behind and that you secure your vehicle properly.

Consider fitting a quality alarm to your boat.

Don’t leave alcohol on the vessel or in sight.

Don’t leave keys on your boat. Take them with you.

Contact the Police Assistance Centre (PAC) on Telephone 131 444 or Jurien Bay Police on 9652 0600 to make a report. When a crime is happening or in a life threatening situation dial 000.

Do not touch anything unless it’s absolutely essential.

If the surfaces on your vessel are suitable and a forensics officer is available, they will attend to “dust” for finger prints. You can assist by: • Preserving areas for forensic examination for DNA and fingerprints from weather or contamination, where possible.

• Noting any changes or disturbance of equipment on board for forensic examination.

• Inquiring with neighbours/club members/ other vessel users regarding similar offences or suspicious activities and informing the attending Police of the details.

Therefore, I pledge to support those groups with meaningful support and better access to grants. I would also like to see more Royalties for Regions funding being directed to the projects they are undertaking.

GARDEN PLOT BEAT THE HEAT - WITH A DIY SUNSHADE Many parts of Australia get scorchingly hot over summer.

Lettuces and many other vegetables are not well-adapted to these high temperatures. Extreme heat can damage leaves and fruit, and reduce the productivity of your garden.

This handy idea and article has been contributed by one of SGA’s subscribers, Sarah Mare. She writes:

To make the sunshade: 1. Make a sleeve at each end of the shade cloth – the sleeves need to be wide enough hold a bamboo pole.

You can do this by turning over the raw edge to create a very wide hem, and then sewing the layers together with fishing line.

2. Slide a bamboo pole into each sleeve.

Here is the completed sunshade, ready to go over the frame:

We’ve made shade cloth screens to protect our vegetables in the hottest months. The photo (below) shows one of our DIY sunshades, set up to protect plants from the midday and afternoon sun.

Drape the sunshade over the frame and secure it, so that it doesn’t thrash around in the wind. You can secure it by tying the ends of the bamboo poles to the frame, or tying them down to bricks or tent pegs.

We made this sunshade using: • 4 tall tomato stakes – for the frame • 4 bamboo poles – 2 for the frame and 2 for the sunshade • 1 piece of shade cloth • Garden twine • Nylon fishing line – to sew sleeves at the raw ends of the shade cloth You should be able to get most of these materials from your local garden supplies outlet. You can get fishing line from some hardware stores or from a bait and tackle shop if you live near the water.

To make the frame: 1. Hammer a tomato stake into the ground at each corner of the vegetable bed.

2. Attach a bamboo crossbar between the two rear tomato stakes – the bamboo can be lashed to the tomato stakes using garden twine (see inset in photo below).

3. Attach a bamboo crossbar between the two front tomato stakes.

The sunshade is adjustable – you can get more coverage by tying the sunshade out on an angle like a tent. Alternatively, you could make longer a sunshade so that you can cover both front and rear of the vegetable bed.

The sunshade is easy to store over winter. Just wrap the sunshade around its bamboo poles and store it in your shed or garage. The frame can be dismantled or left in place for next year.

SPORT JURIEN BAY BOWLING CLUB What a great night we had for the return to corporate bowls last Thursday, 4th February. All 28 teams arrived on time and although a little windy, it seemed that everyone had a lot of fun.

The winner for round 6 was the Brickcount team with +22, followed by Coastal Trimming on +19 and third was Subway Six Inchers on +12. The WD40’s won the much sought after Mars Bars.

After the 6 completed rounds, the leading team is Pot Shop, second is Brickcount and third is Lager Lads Men’s Triples Championship winners: Ian James, Ged Cashmore and Ron Sewel

The Men’s Triples Championships had to be postponed from Saturday 6 February to Sunday due to inclement weather.

Congratulations to the Jurien team who came third in the recent Leeman Open Fours event. The team of Alfie Carlton, Lance Litchfield, Ged Cashmore and Ian Davies lost just one game and had a +36 margin.

The weather on Sunday was kinder, which enabled the bowlers to play four games in the Men’s Triples Championships and find a winner. We had a record 30 players which is a terrific effort for the club The winners, with wins in all 4 games and an aggregate of +35, were Ian James, Ged Cashmore and Ron Sewell.

Runners up were Brian Emery, Dennis Stokes and Richard Allan with 4 wins and +30.

Mars Bar winners were Litchy, Louie and John Butler.

HEALTH DEALING WITH CONFLICT – IS IT AS SIMPLE AS HAVING A LITTLE EMPATHY? How often are we in conflict with someone? Conflict can often bring up a broad range of emotions like fear and anger and even the word is often used to describe war or the clashing of opposed interests.

Some conflict is a normal part of any healthy relationship, after all we cannot expect two people to completely agree on the same thing all the time. The saying “let us agree to disagree” is not always as simple as it sounds as often conflict is either avoided or not managed in a healthy way. This often can cause a great deal of harm and emotional pain in our relationships bought about by negative behaviors and feelings such as resentment, manipulation, abuse and/or control.

We can experience conflict within our personal relationships, family, workplace, schools or even within ourselves. I think in times of change, uncertainty and being out of our comfort zone (such as the effects of COVID-19) conflict can be exacerbated. Often what is a simple disagreement or misunderstanding can turn into a full-blown conflict as one or both parties perceive it as a threat or personal attack (whether real or not).

So, it’s important that we understand what causes and exacerbates conflict as this can depend on a whole range of factors: • Perception: This is influenced by our life experiences, culture, values and beliefs. Do we respond to conflict based on our individual perception or an objective view of the facts?

• Emotions: If we are not aware of our emotions or have difficulty managing them in times of stress, trying to resolve conflict can be more difficult.

• Avoidance: Conflict continues to fester when not dealt with. Putting our head in the sand is one unhelpful coping strategy, self-medication (drinking more, working harder, talking less) is another.

Communication breakdown: This is worthy of another article in itself, but effective communication (both hearing and being heard) is vital for conflict resolution. Understanding the differences in male vs female communication styles is also important (not right or wrong but different!) When we are not coping in any area of our life, failure to communicate how we feel is one of our biggest mistakes. Remember communication is the start to the problem-solving process!

So how do we react or respond to conflict? Several wellknown self-help websites talk about a healthy response to conflict which includes: • Staying calm, non-defensive and being respectful.

• Empathize with the other person’s viewpoint (Empathy = the ability to identify, understand and share the feelings of another).

• Seek compromise and not hold a grudge or seek to punish the other person.

• Forgive and forget (resentment is letting someone else live rent free in your head).

• Facing conflict and talking through issues is a chance for personal and relationship growth (not a point of difference about winning or losing).

It’s important to understand that we are all unique individuals and the personal, environmental and lifestyle factors affecting our ability to cope with conflict are vast. However, with half of marriages ending in separation/divorce; bullying and harassment being major issues in schools/workplace; and the push for individualism outweighing collectivist values have we lost sight of one important attribute … having a little more Empathy for one another?

KITCHEN TABLE VALENTINE’S DAY DINNER Jurien Bay Quality Meats has a selection of easy roasts, perfect for a quick and easy Valentine’s Day dinner. This recipe, Lamb Rump Roast with a fragrant grilled tomato salad and streamed greens is ready in under an hour and serves two. 3 ripe Roma tomatoes, halved 1 small red onion, cut into thin wedges Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 400 gram lamb rump roast 2 teaspoon olive oil, plus extra for pan 1 clove garlic, finely sliced 10 mint leaves, flnely sliced Steamed green vegetables, to serve

METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced). Line a small baking dish with baking paper.

2. Place the tomatoes and onion into the baking dish, cut-side up. Drizzle with oil. Season. Bake 20 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, trim the fat from the lamb and, with the end of a sharp knife, make incisions into the top of the rump. Push slices of garlic into the incisions.

4. Heat an oiled non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Sear the lamb all over, until browned lightly.

5. Remove the tomato mixture from the oven. Add seared lamb to the baking dish. Bake further 30 minutes, or until lamb is cooked as desired.

6. Remove from oven; transfer lamb to a warm plate.

Cover with foil. Rest 5 minutes.

7. To serve, divide the tomato mixture onto warm serving plates with the mint. Carve the lamb into thick slices; place on top of the tomato mixture.

Serve with steamed green vegetables.
