SIXTH FORM NEWS Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a festive Christmas and a Happy New Year - here’s to a brilliant 2024!

I cannot believe that this is that last half term for my weekly bulletin - time has really flown. Next week, the leadership roles assembly will be launched to the Year 12s, containing how to apply for prefect roles and for the 2024-2025 Head Girl Team. This requires a letter of application to Dr McShane and Miss Pitchford, an in-tray task, an interview and finally, for the Head Girl candidates, a speech to the whole school, after which every student and teacher get a vote. I wish the best of luck to all the girls applying for a role, no matter how big or small!

Maria HvO commented on our visit from the Year 11 on Thursday morning for our Subject Ambassadors event, saying: “The current Year 11s were invited to the Sixth Form reading room, where they had the opportunity to have a look at our Year 12 textbooks, folders, notebooks and more, to gain an idea of what it would be like to study certain subjects at A Level. The Year 12s enjoyed talking about their own experiences of starting Sixth Form and helping the younger girls with any questions or worries they had. Harrison’s were kind enough to provide us with fresh pastries and juice, and it was a very joyful occasion for all involved.”

The KS3 academic scholars’ dinner took place on Thursday evening, involving a speech from our wonderful Academic Senior Prefect, Corellia W. She gave an insight into what she shared with the scholars: “I decided to speak about something I discovered called Interlingua - an artificial language based on the romance languages. I thought that this would fit brilliantly with the point of the academic dinners - to celebrate the sharing and learning of new things. This Interlingua being something that I assume would potentially be new to the girls in KS3. I am excited to share this with them and explore how it can be applied to a bigger picture.”

And lastly, as our year in office draws to a close, the Head Girl Team are busy organising our legacy: a project that every Head Girl Team must fulfill during the year. In the next couple of weeks, we will introduce our legacy, starting with a House art competition.

We hope to see many entries from all who are interested, particularly our artists of St Teresa’s.

SCHOLARS’ DINNER The Year 7, 8 and 9 Academic Scholars' Dinner went very well on Thursday, with much thoughtful conversation and discussion of intriguing issues had by all. Corellia W speech about Interlingua - a constructed language designed to help make communication easier across the world - was insightful and passionate, and really got the guests thinking about how languages can be rich, expressive cultural treasures, rather than just straightforward methods of communication. Food for thought was not the only item on the menu, however, and the southern fried chicken and chocolate brownie desert were equally heartily appreciated!

SISTERS VISIT We were delighted to welcome a delegation of nuns from the Sisters of Christian Instruction, the community who founded our school in 1928. Amongst the group were the Reverend Mother General from Brazil, the Mother Superior from Belgium, two sisters from Brazil, one sister from the Congo, and Sr Carmel, a former pupil of our school who joined the community here, becoming the novice mistress and head of boarding.

CCF FLYING CCF took to the skies during a recent visit to RAF Benson!

The cadets enjoyed seeing the intricacies of aviation up close, gaining insights into the vital role of the Royal Air Force.

Seeing the girls stepping out of their comfort zones and enjoying the thrill of flying is always wonderful to see.

NOTICES YEAR 9 MACBETH TRIP Year 9 have a fantastic opportunity to attend a performance of ‘Macbeth’ in Worthing on Wednesday 6th March, 2024 with the English department. Having studied this play last term, this will be an excellent chance for pupils to see a live performance which will help them when preparations begin for the end of year examinations.

GCSE ENGLISH LITERATURE TRIP All Year 11 girls will have the opportunity to go to Poetry Live in Brighton on 31 January 2024. This is a fantastic opportunity, to see some of the poets whose work is in the GCSE Literature poetry anthology talk about their work.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY TRIP It is a requirement of the AQA examination board that pupils undertake fieldwork on at least two occasions. The Geography Department has, therefore, organised a compulsory residential trip to Dorset. We will depart from St Teresa’s at 09:00 on Wednesday 24th April 2024 and will return by 15:45 on Friday 26th April 2024.

SPEAKER - WHEN GIRLS FALL OUT As partners in your daughter’s educational and social upbringing, we understand the importance of navigating the complexities that arise when your daughters face challenges in their friendships.

To provide support and insights on this crucial topic, we are delighted to invite you to a special parent talk with Andrew Hampton, a recognized expert in adolescent relationship dynamics, on Thursday, January 25th, from 18:00 to 19:15.

This enlightening talk will be conducted via Zoom, but will be screened in the Sixth Form Lecture Theatre to provide a grander experience. Parents will have the option to participate from home using the Meeting Link

WORLD SCHOLARS’ CUP The World Scholars Cup regional round is being hosted at St Teresa's on Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th March 2024. The WSC is a competition where students compete in teams of 3 in four different events:

COMPETITION . COMPETITION . COMPETITION. COMPETITION Art & Photography Competition The Rotary Young Photographer and Young Artist are well-established and successful annual competitions promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain.

Last Year we were extremely proud to have a runner up and a national winner from the Prep School and we hope to be successful again this year!

Entries are submitted in age groups for fairness.

Art Competition— ‘Rebuilding’ The competition aims to encourage young people to be creative and develop skills in using traditional, contemporary or digital media.

The girls should submit a 2-dimensional, up to a maximum size of A2, unframed, piece of artwork based upon the theme, ‘Rebuilding’, with a sentence to explain the relationship to the theme.

The judges will be looking for technical merit, content and composition, and imagination and style.

They welcome artwork in any medium: For example – pen & ink, paint, collage, printmaking or digital formats.

Plagiarised or 'close-copied' images are not permitted.

At all stages of the competition, competitors will receive a certificate of participation and there are prizes for the winners of the age groups for the National Final.

Photography Competition— ‘Rebuilding’ The competition aims to encourage young people to experiment with photography, use digital and/or traditional methods of photography, demonstrate interpretation of the topic and express personal ideas through the medium of photography.

The girls should produce one photograph based upon the theme, ‘Rebuilding’ with a sentence to explain the relationship to the theme. Mobile Phones or cameras may be used. The photograph must be submitted via Digital Format and be at least 1500 pixel in size on the longest length. The entries and supporting information sent electronically must not exceed 15Mb per email sent.

Welcome back to the new term, and the new year! We hope that you all have had a lovely Christmas break, and are looking forward to the Spring Term.

Temperatures have dropped, so please make sure that your child comes to ride with enough layers. We do have some coats and gloves on hand that can be borrowed, however we are limited in sizes. In the cold weather it can be useful to wear tights or leggings underneath jodhpurs/ trousers or the sports skins as a base layer and wearing enough coats on top. Our staff will be encouraging all riders to wear gloves, but if you have your own please make sure to bring them with you.

We are limited in space in our locker room, but parents and children are welcome to drop off their riding attire in the mornings at school drop off.

We are aware of some school trips and sporting events over the coming term. If your child cannot attend one of their lessons, then please let the office know by phone or by email, or the lesson can be cancelled on the booking site. As if you wish to cancel a lesson, we do require 48hrs notice or more in order to offer credit.

Holidays Activities 2024 We have released our holiday activities on our online booking system for the rest of the academic year!

February Half Term, Easter Holidays, May Half Term and Summer Holidays We will be running a variety of Pony Mornings, Pony Afternoons, Private Lessons, Lunge Lessons, Day Camps and a few others.

They are all on the EcPro system and you can book a place now!

This Week While the rest of the world has packed their Christmas decorations away long ago, and have moved on to the newly installed Easter Eggs in the supermarkets, we paused to finish our celebrations with the great feast of the Epiphany, remembering the visit of the Magi to the ChristChild.

Their first gift was gold, a suitable gift for a king.

This child, born in poverty, far from any grand palace, was recognised as not just ‘a’ king, but as ‘the’ king, the one who had been waited for so long, the one to rule for all eternity.

Incense was a gift associated with the temple, where it was burnt day and night, creating a beautiful fragrant cloud. For those in the temple, it was as if they had been transported into heaven itself, with them standing in the presence of God. The Magi with this gift confirm Jesus as God, here present with us.

Finally the Magi give the strangest of gifts. For a newborn child Myrrh was used in funerals to prepare the body for burial. With this gift the Magi recognise that this newborn king, God-withus, lying in a wooden manger, would give his life on the wood of the cross to save all people once and for all.

The Magi bowed down and worshipped Jesus, recognising him as king, God and saviour. As we come to the end of the Christmas season, we are challenged to recognise Jesus the same way, to bow down and worship him, and to make him the very centre of our lives.
