Dear Parents

Finally, I would like to thank all the staff and parents involved in the tremendous organisation and collection of the books at the end of last week. I know it has been extremely helpful in aiding online learning for the majority of pupils this week.

We had an engaging start to school with a thoughtful assembly by 5SM highlighting the importance of listening carefully and how we can all use this important skill to support and understand others. This message was reinforced by an insightful presentation shared with parents from Dr Alison D’Amario on supporting your child’s mental health and wellbeing during lockdown. It was filled with helpful strategies to assist us in navigating our way through this current period.

Computer challenges involving 3D design and Microsoft Makecode, music competitions, distance running and the challenge to climb Mount Everest have been keeping pupils busy during their lessons.

Our Friday assembly reminded us that we are all ambassadors for our school, responsible for how we embrace technology and we should be positive in the way we think,

Computing Challenges The Cranmore Upper Preps and Seniors have been busy in Computing lessons completing a wide range of different activities including 3D drawing in Year 4—enjoy the below example!

Meanwhile Year 5 have been designing arcade games using Microsoft's Makecode environment, as shown below.

The older pupils have been researching and presenting the different components of a computer.

Year 2 and Year 3 have been busy composing in Music this week. Max C in 2JC composed a piece, shown to the left, about his pet bunnies to be played on the recorder, and added extra sound effects with percussion. Brilliant written work

by Max, and I really enjoyed listening to his piece!

Learning more about Epiphany - King or Queen for the day This week in French pupils in Year 4 to Year 8 have learnt about how to celebrate Epiphany in France. Some year groups made a crown, others baked the recipe, some worked through the recipe itself in French as a reading comprehension, others have eaten ia galette des rois and searched for the winner of la fève with their families!

Year 4 studied the meaning of Epiphany and how le six janvier is celebrated in France. Here are some photos of the Y4 children with their couronne de rois, which the person who finds la fève in la galette des rois wears for the day.

Translating the Recipe for Galette des Rois from French into English to bake it, eat it—and find the hidden surprise!

The pupils baked a cake called ‘la galette des rois’ and added a little china figure/ coin in it before putting it in the oven. When ready, they asked the oldest person in the family to cut slices of the cake and distribute the slices, following the instructions coming from under the table, where the youngest person of the family sits! A fair and fun way to distribute the slices to the family! The person who finds the coin/ little china figure in their slice is the king or queen for the day. They wear a paper crown and can boss people around for the rest of the day!

“I made the galette des rois according to your recipe over the weekend, and everyone in the family thought it was absolutely delicious!

I did not have puff pastry, so I made my own flaky pie crust. I have added some pictures of the galette, and my brother Rowan 5SJ was under the table! I won la fève! We all agreed to make this a new year’s tradition! “ Adrian G 8CD

Learning is fun in maths with counting money and making shops in Year 2 Year 2 have been learning all about money in the last week. We have been working on finding totals/finding the change.

Today the children are setting up their own shop at home and practising everything we have learnt.

Happy Nursery children exploring Forest School!

The children visited Forest School with our new Forest School Leader, Ellie. They had great fun exploring ice, playing in the mud kitchen and using their imagination with a small world farm. They climbed in the trees and played on the rope swing and enjoyed delicious hot chocolate for their snack.

A Message from our Chaplain A reading from the Book of Samuel Glory to you, O Lord.

The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel.

Samuel answered, “Here I am.” And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

Again the Lord called, ‘Samuel!’ And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, ‘Here I am; you called me.’

‘My son,’ Eli said, ‘I did not call; go back and lie down.’

Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.

A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”

Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ.

Samuel listens to God This week we hear how God calls Samuel. It is a very famous story in the Bible. Samuel was going to be called to be a messenger for God. Samuel was awake and was able to listen to God and to hear God. As we approach the second week in lockdown let us be like Samuel. Able to listen to God, to our parents and to our teachers. Listening involves being still and really attentive. Try not to be distracted by what is not important but rather try to hear the voice of God in the silence.

Think about what can distract you this week and how can you overcome these distractions.
