Issue 2
Summer Term
6th May 2022
Message from Mrs Conrad We were delighted to welcome a record breaking number of parents to the Prep School today for our May Open Morning. The school looked at its very best bathed in the glorious Spring sunshine and there was an excited and palpable ‘buzz’ from all our visitors who were so impressed by the girls, the exciting lessons and the superb facilities that they saw on their tours. Many families registered on the spot when they realised how over-subscribed the school now is which is very exciting! Thank you to all current parents for sharing such lovely feedback about the school with families and friends which has resulted in such extraordinary interest and huge thanks to all the staff, governors and FOST who helped make this event such a success. This week was quieter than usual as our Year 5 and 6 girls both embarked on their residential trips – Year 5 to Osmington Bay and Year 6 to Norfolk. Judging from the photographs, all the girls had a wonderful time and made lifelong memories undertaking a variety of character building activities. I look forward to hearing all the details on their return this afternoon.

Year 3—Tremors Today as part of our topic on Tremors, the girls completed the Starburst Experiment to find out about the three different types of rock and the rock cycle. They started by comparing starbursts with igneous rock, then cut each starburst into four pieces to show the sediments after the igneous rock had been eroded. Afterwards, they pressed hard on the pieces of sediment and said “compaction and cementation” to eventually create sedimentary rock. The girls then put their flattened sedimentary rock into a plastic bag and added heat and pressure to create metamorphic rock. Next, the girls put their ball of starbursts “metamorphic rock” into the microwave onto a plate and saw what happened when heat was applied. We removed the melting “magma or lava” and then watched it cool and turn into igneous rock. The girls were amazing at following the instructions, predicting what might happen and showing their evidence.
Year 3—RE In RE this week, the girls worked in groups to create a set of questions that they would ask the disciples about their beliefs and actions after they experienced the Holy Spirit coming to them. They then 'Hot Seated' the disciples to see what their answers would be. There were a variety of questions and some thoughtful answers too! Well done girls.
Year 4—Science Year 4 put on their lab coats and safety goggles to become scientists this week. It was up to the Year 4 girls to determine the speed at which a variety of liquids pour down a 2metre piece of guttering. They worked hard to plan their method, hypothesise outcomes, and prepare all of the equipment required. It was a very interesting afternoon with some unexpected results. Some liquids, like lemonade, allowed for no more than a sneeze before reaching the bottom! Others, however, such as tomato ketchup, proved to be so slow that I think we could all have popped out for afternoon tea and still made it back in time to see it reach the bottom! It was a really fun afternoon, and Mrs Ridulfa, Miss Branfoot and Mrs Curling even threw in a mystery liquid. Try to track down a Year 4, and ask them what it was...
Music News Musicians of the Week Year 2 – Rosalind D for making a fantastic contribution in the Infant Music Festival. Year 3 – Evie R for making a great contribution in her first music lesson at St T’s. Year 4 – Flori H for participating very well in class this week. Class of the Week – Year 2EBWell done to all these girls.
Infant Music Festival On Tuesday, we welcomed children from 3 other schools to St Teresa’s to take part in our Infant Music Festival. The children took part in workshops with our guest musician, Dr Amy Bebbington and rehearsed for a concert in the afternoon. They really enjoyed performing with the other children and professional musicians in the live band. The audience was also treated to performances from 4 of our Senior School Music Scholars.
Individual Music Lessons Please note that fees for these lessons will rise in September to £224 per set of ten half hour lessons. Parents are reminded that a term’s notice to the instrumental teacher and the Director of Music is required if a pupil wishes to stop lessons.
This Week We continued our journey through the season of Easter and took another opportunity to reflect on a character who met with the Risen Christ on the day of His resurrection. This week we met Cleopas (Luke 24). It is perhaps not surprising that the disciples suspected that they would face the same fate as Jesus had done, dying so horribly on the cross. Perhaps this was the reason why Cleopas and his companion took the perilous decision to travel, while it was still dark, to the town of Emmaus. Clearly they were pouring out their hearts to each other along the road, sharing their dismay and deep disappointment at what had happened. They were unexpectedly interrupted by a curious stranger who accompanied them as they walked along. With enormous irony Luke puts the question, ‘Are you the only person who does not know what happened in Jerusalem?’ onto Cleophas lips, when we, represented by the other disciple, know all too well that if anyone knows what has really been going on, it is surely Jesus who is walking along the road beside them. It is true in life, that we often don’t notice the things that are right under our noses. Of course, the events depicted in the Gospel account are portrayed on the altar in the Chapel, showing that moment when the two disciples finally recognise that Jesus has been accompanying them on every step of their journey. Perhaps this is one of the main lessons for us from this account. The God who loves us does indeed accompany us on every step of our journey, speaking words of gentle encouragement and support, and particularly at those moments of greatest challenge and fear. He is always there, but we don’t always recognise His presence. As we reflect on the experience of Cleopas, perhaps we can become more aware of God’s presence along side us as our ever-present companion on our journey through life.
