Message from Mrs Conrad “It’s Cool to be Kind Week” got off to a wonderful start with an assembly led by the School Council who shared a beautiful story about how kind words can help us all to grow. There have been lots of fun and thought provoking PSHE lessons across the school and today we were delighted to welcome the team from Cherry Trees Charity. They told us all about the children they help and how important it is to see them as children with different abilities not disabilities - such a lovely message for us to remember. We are all special and God loves each and every one of us and rejoices in our differences.

This Week in The Prep School ‘It’s Cool to Be Kind’ School Council opened our annual 'It's Cool To Be Kind' week with an Assembly reminding everyone of the importance of treating each other with respect. They shared the story 'Bloom' which highlights the power of kind words and Andy and Odd Socks' new song, 'One Kind Word'.

Year 6 enjoyed 'Cool To Be Kind' week by sharing acts of kindness that they have experienced. They brainstormed words to describe how those moments made them feel and wrote them on balloons. The girls enjoyed letting these positive feelings float through their classrooms to remind us to show kindness to others.

Year 3—Monument Mayhem The girls in Year 3 rounded off their ‘Monument Mayhem’ topic with some very special visitors! They were excited and very proud to show their parents their exhibits and presentations.

Year 3 Art Year 3 were challenged to experiment with a wide variety of media to capture the "featheriness" of feathers. First, they examined how the artist Kittie Jones, who paints birds in their natural habitats, does this. They combined oil pastels, chalks, charcoal and watercolour - as well as dipping pencils in paint! This is the start of a mini project which Year 3 are undertaking, to create a woodland-themed art installation for Cherry Trees. The girls will be finding out more about this special charity in assembly on Friday.

Year 5 Star Gazers As part of their investigation into Stargazers, Year 5 researched and wrote newspaper reports about the first Moon Landings. They were fascinated to discover that Armstrong and Aldrin spent a total of 22 hours on the moon, however only 3 of those were spent actually walking on the moon's surface.

In their topic lessons, the girls researched facts about the planets and the sun. These will then be arranged and assembled to create our very own class solar system mobile.

Years 5 & 6 Art Club Year 5 and 6 girls have been experimenting with lines, shapes and colour in Art Club. They have learnt that your eyes can be drawn to certain parts of an artwork when shape and colour is used correctly. The girls produced some impressive pieces of art.

Eco & Gardening Club The girls created some posters about using the compost bin in Eco and Gardening Club this week. There were some very original ideas and bright ideas for their posters to encourage their peers to use the compost bin during break time where appropriate. We hope to put them up around the school when they are finished.

Sports News The last two weeks have been very busy with lots of matches and tournaments. A huge well done to all the girls in their matches and tournaments. We have been very proud of all the progress the girls have made in their team sports.

Outside Achievements Apollonia in Year 3 competed in the U9’s Surrey Schools Ski Championships for St Teresa’s, winning a GOLD medal, making her the fastest U9 girl in Surrey.

A great achievement and a first for St Teresa’s. Well done Apollonia!

Phoebe H in Year 6 had a lovely surprise last weekend after her name was drawn in a raffle at her hockey club to be 1 of 2 mascots for the Ladies 1st team. She had an amazing time training alongside: Izzy Petter, Darcy Bourne, Leah Wilkinson, Georgie Twig and Miss Steph Elliott!

She even got to hold two Olympic medals and sit in on the team talk. She said the best part was watching them win their match 4 -2.

Matches •

The U8-U11 swim squad competed against Hawthorns School on Thursday 4th November. We won! The gala was captained by Grace and Jasmine with some fantastic swims all round.

On Friday 5th November, the U11A hockey team travelled to West Sussex to compete in a UKSA hockey tournament. The girls were really excited to play hockey all day. They excelled themselves, winning 3 matches and drawing 2, placing them in the top 2 in their group and progressing through to the Cup semi finals. The girls fought hard and had a few shots at goal, with their goal keeper saving them all. The final score was 1-0 to Brighton College. Although disappointed not to make the finals, the girls placed in the top 4 out of 11 Schools. A great result and plenty of practice for their next match.

On Saturday 6th November, the U8A+B hockey teams had their first Saturday fixture at St George’s. They worked hard and learnt some great hockey tactics. The A team placed 2nd and the B team placed 4th.

Players of the tournament were Sophia and Eliza.

On Monday 8th November, the U9B hockey team travelled to Danes Hill for a hockey triangular tournament. The girls played Danes Hill first, winning 2-1, excelling in their block tackles and passing angles.

Next up was Feltonfleet, where we narrowly missed out on a win, even hitting the goal post on one occasion. The girls placed 2nd in the mini tournament. Great work girls! The girls were captained by Tabitha and player of the match was Lainey.

The U11A-C hockey teams travelled to CLFS for a hockey match. The girls played superbly, passing accurately and attacking together. The A’s and B’s both won 2-0. The C’s narrowly missed out on a win, with plenty of shots at goal. Players of the matches were: Laiya, Nyang’ara and Sophia.

On Saturday 13th November, the U10A netball team competed in a netball tournament at Hawthorns. They won 3 out of 5 matches and placed 3rd in the tournament.

On Monday 15th November, the U9A hockey team had their turn to compete in the Danes Hill hockey tournament. They played excellently, driving fast with the ball and supporting each other on the pitch. They placed 2nd in the tournament. Isabella K won player of the whole tournament, voted by the other teachers.

On Tuesday 16th November, The U10B+C netball teams played a match against Tormead. They showed determination and good interceptions. The C’s won 8-6 and the B’s narrowly missed out on a win. Players of the matches were Emma and Ruby.

On Wednesday 17th November, it was the U10A hockey teams turn to compete in the UKSA hockey tournament at Burgess Hill. The girls demonstrated some excellent hockey. The highlights being a change of play across the pitch, resulting in a goal and a precise hit by Peyton in a short corner, winning us the match in the last 30 seconds. The girls progressed to the Cup quarterfinals, however ended up against tough competition. T hey finished the tournament with hot chocolates, watching one of the teams doing penalty shuffles.

On the same day, the U11A+B netball team had their first match against Manor House. They were victorious, winning 9-0 and 6-3. Players of the matches were Isobel and Hermione.

Music News

Easter Music Course 2022!

Next year’s course will take place from Monday 11th to Thursday 14th April. This will be the 10th anniversary of this course at school directed by Mrs Yalden. The course is open to girls and boys from Year 3-Year 6 from all schools who have passed Grade 1 on their instrument. Please email Mrs Yalden on c.yalden@st-teresas.com for further information.

This Week We are making a particular feature this year of our house patron saints. This week we turned our attention to St Ignatius of Loyola, the famous 16th Century Spanish saint. We focused on three key features of his work.

Firstly, we recalled that while he had a promising career as a soldier before him, a severe injury - by a cannonball no less - meant that Ignatius spent an enforced year recovering, during which time he read, reflected, prayed, wrote and began to recognise his call to be a warrior for Christ. His experience reminds us that painful events can be opportunities where God is providing for us an opening to a new direction.

Ignatius, along with a group of similarly minded friends, founded the Society of Jesus, now known by their more popular name as the Jesuits. We were reminded that God rarely calls us to work in isolation. God calls us to be community, and to act as community. It is reassuring that the way we remember St Ignatius, along with our other patrons, is through our House system that encourages this sense of acting together as a community.

And finally, we recalled that St Ignatius, through his writings and Spiritual Exercises, encourages us to enter wholehearted into God’s Word - the Scriptures - by engaging imaginatively. We had an experience of this in Chapel as we reflected on the account (John 8:2-11) where Jesus is confronted with a mob who are intent on stoning a woman to death. In a short reflection, we prayerfully focused on the faces of each group in the account—the angry crowd of self-appointed judges, the terrified woman, and, Jesus, who with words of wisdom, challenges the mob to recognise their own sin and, in a model of compassion, welcomes and exhorts the woman.

May St Ignatius continue to encourage and inspire us in our journey through life.

We continue, in this month of November, to remember our loved ones who have died through our display of autumn leaves around the Remembrance Tree in the Chapel.

Thank you to all those who contributed to our shoe box appeal. We collected 113 boxes that, together with the Prep School brought our total to 209 boxes.

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas…look out for the festive decorated trees around the school – a BIG SHOUT of thanks to the lovely FOST ladies who arranged this!

Christmas Jumper Collection Reminder FOST is collecting (via collection boxes in both Prep and Senior reception) all unwanted or outgrown jumpers. Any Christmas jumpers collected will be for sale for a small donation in the School Uniform shop.

Christmas Fair Sunday 5th December Christmas Fair Sweetie Jars Reminder for each girl to please send in their sweetie jars containing wrapped sweets or edible goodies (NO NUTS please!) or get creative with filling a jar with any other fun small items.

NSEA Competition Reports On the afternoon of Friday 12th November, girls from the NSEA and their ponies and parents travelled to Keysoe for the Championship Plate to compete in show jumping.

The Friday held the warm up classes where we had two riding in the 70cm and three riding in the 80cm classes. It was a good start to the weekend!

On the Saturday was the Championship classes! We had two teams competing in the 70cm class, the Navy team – Lottie, Lulu and Sofie, and the Green team – Antonia, Chloe and Inde. The Green team did great with two clear rounds, and came in 3rd place overall and Lulu placed 7th as an individual! Then the Navy team also did well with three clear rounds and the team placed 2nd overall! This meant that both teams were headed to the second round!

In the second round, there were four teams in total and two of those were from St Teresa’s! Everyone rode brilliantly and the Green team came 4th and the Navy team held their place in 3rd, with Lulu placing 7th as an individual!

In the 80cm class, the Pink team – Antonia, Chloe and Lulu – were the only team to represent St Teresa’s.

The girls did a super job! The team came 6th in the first round on one clear and two four faults, with Antonia coming 1st as an individual! Then onto the second round, they all rode even better to have a final team placing of 3rd place and Antonia keeping the top spot of 1st place!

Congratulations to everyone who went to ride and those who supported them!

Toddler Art Class Our Toddler Art Class runs from 9.45-10.45am and is open to everyone from 10 months to 4 years. There is a weekly theme packed full of educational early years topics, lots of fun messy painting and wonderful take-home crafts to hone those fine motor skills!
