Housemaster’s Words
As another busy and successful term comes to a close it is important for me to say thank you to a few people. House Captain Ben Gill, along with deputies Will Warner and Ben Cordingley have led the house with distinction, setting an excellent example and showing real thought in how they approach their roles. The matrons Diana, Liz, Megan and Emma have poured their energies into the house and always go above and beyond the call of duty – we are very lucky to have such a great pastoral team and I thank them for all their hard work. Mr Reed and Mr Rossiter have really made their mark on the house in this their first term and they have been an enormous help to me – asking all the right questions and sorting all the things that I completely forget to do. They and their families have been really positive and welcome additions to the house community.

Goodbye to Megan Gale It is really important to say farewell and thank you to Megan Gale who retires at the end of term after 16 years as matron in Loveday and a further 11 years working in the Medical Centre. It really will be hard to imagine Loveday with Megan, she is a pillar of the house and has Loveday running through her veins. The amount of time and energy she has put into Loveday and Cranleigh as whole is so great that I would have been in the Upper Sixth the year she started work here. As a matron she has impacted the lives of literally hundreds of Loveday boys, not just by being caring and supportive when they are feeling unwell but in being an emotional crutch to them when they are feeling low or being someone to talk to when they need a chat. One of the things that has characterised Megan’s matroning is her emotional intelligence: she reads situations, boy’s moods and the atmosphere in the house incredibly well. I have lost count of the amount of times she has popped in my study saying ‘only me’ and let me know of something one of the boys had mentioned to her or something she had sensed that was part of bigger important picture. Her gentle steering of Loveday boys has been hugely valuable to their growth in the widest sense and this is always done with no side being taken and no presumptions being made – she takes everyone for who they are, never judges anybody but simply wants everyone in the community to feel happy, safe and well and will do all she can to ensure that. She has an understated sense of humour (I think we probably need one when looking after 100 boys) and in the 11 years I have worked with her in Loveday I can never remember her ever getting cross or moaning. She is one of the rocks upon which Loveday sits and will be hugely hard to replace. We will miss her enormously but she will still be living in the village and so expect her to pop in regularly! Megan, thank you for all you have done for Loveday and Cranleigh.
Part Song and Fourth Form Dance
The start of the Michaelmas term was very hectic as we prepared for the House Performance. Loveday and the girls from West sang "Ain't no sunshine" by Bill Withers. We were lucky to have such range of talent. A special mention must go to Johnny Marsh who helped aid the process of rehearsing the boys and the girls. Although we did not win, the judge said that "Loveday had the best boy singers!" I am extremely proud of those who took part and the support during the performance was fantastic! - Dan Evans

We came into this year’s house squash knowing that we had a shot at winning, and we're glad to be against East in the first round. We beat them convincingly with a 4-1 win. We found out that we were going to be against Cubit in the final and knew that everyone was going to have to perform if we were going to win. We lost the first two games and had to win the last three in order to win. The boys put in a good shift and we brought it back to obtain a 3-2 win. Fourth Form Cross Country
In Fourth Form Cross Country Loveday came a close second. All of the participants did really well and the majority finished in the middle ranks between positions 10—40. Alex (Hughes), Mark (Walker) and myself (Ben Murphy) finished in the top ten. We were really unlucky in the end to come second to Cubitt. But everyone still performed really well. Ben Murphy

Senior House Public Speaking was very successful this year. However, disappointingly, we ended up in the runner up spot to Cubitt (again). Our team consisted of, myself; Freddy Austin and Jack Collins where Freddy (our main speaker) spoke of how he believes concussion should be taken more seriously in modern day society. Our argument was compelling and really outlined how serious head injuries can be. There was a seriously strong contingent of Loveday boys supporting, which also made a huge difference to the strength of our argument. Ben Claxton
We had a strong team this year consisting of myself and Nick Peachey returning from last year, as well as Jordan Corbett and Dillon Francis who were new to the side. In the competition itself we faced South and after a reasonably strong start we were leading at halfway by just a few points. After this we didn’t keep it going and after some more straightforward follow up questions which South were able to answer correctly, they edged into the lead to finish ahead of us meaning we were unfortunately knocked out in the semi-final. Junior House Public Speaking—2nd Place Earlier this term, we competed in the junior public speaking. The team consisted of myself as the main speaker, Tom Hills as the chairman and Dillion Francis as the Giver of Thanks. The topic we spoke about was whether the voting age should be lowered to sixteen, we were proposing this. I thought we all spoke very well and the feedback from the judges was very positive. In the end we came second place behind West. Henry Mould Junior House Challenge—2nd Place The team consisted of Archie Collins, Nick Peachey, Dillon Francis and myself (Tom Hills). Our team was somewhat lacking in experience with Nick bring our only capped player. This inexperience showed against North in the semifinals and although we were clearly the stronger team. We were slow on the buzzer and as time started to run out we felt the pressure and ended up tied on 230 points each. The tie-break was in and all of our hopes rested on this last question. It was read and Nick buzzed in, silence hung in the air as he muttered 'dowry'. The silence reached deafening pitch before the adjudicator nodded and the room erupted in cacophony of sound. We were through and playing Cubitt in the final, with a Chesser/ Corbitt combination they were the favourites. We didn't let this show however as at half time we were up by 20 points. Our valiant effort soon collapsed as Cubitt 'showed up'. In the end it finished 520 to 360 to Cubitt and we recorded another second place for Loveday. Maybe next year. Tom Hills
