From the Housemaster

Despite the external exams this newsletter highlights just how many other things have been going on in East and Cranleigh. A particular highlight for me this term was the House music evening which provided so many of our musicians to showcase their considerable talents. I was delighted that the evening consisted of such a wide variety of performances and that all acts were so warmly received. As I have said to the boys it is important to try new things and get outside of our comfort zone, House events such as these provide an excellent opportunity to do just that. I wish all those who took external exams every success come results day in August and also that everybody, staff and pupils, have a relaxing and restful break.

Junior House Cricket

Tom Hemming

In the first round we played North house and we bowled first. As a team we played very badly and we bowled and fielded terribly and so North got 130 runs in 10 overs. When it was our chance to bat we got all out for 80 and so lost the first game. Mr Griffiths called it one of the worst performances he had ever seen. In our next game we were competing with Cubitt for 3rd and 4th place. We batted first and got a total of 117. Sam Lubbock got 29 and played very well but everyone got a few runs. Then when we were bowling we were able to get out Cubitt’s best batsmen out early and bowled them all out for about 70. JJ, Tomo and Mitchell all got 2 wickets. We came 3rd and so did well considering our cricketing talent.

House Swimming

Athletics

Ben Larwood

An eagerly anticipated event finally came upon us, with what seemed to be a great day of athletics despite the weather. East House, of course, was out in full voice and support of their fellow team mates. In the juniors, the boys managed to pull of second place behind Loveday overall, with good performances from all especially the 4x400m team. In the Inters, we showed pure dominance on the track and field granting us first place. Special mention goes to Rafe Scott for winning the 400m and the High jump. Along with Oli Sharpe and Jamie Bloomfield who proved to be vital assets to our 4x100m relay as they breezed over the line in first place. This was then followed up by the 4x400m who like the juniors won. Unfortunately, in the seniors, we weren’t quite up to the standards of the juniors and inters. We had decent performances in the field events winning the javelin and coming second in the discus and shot put, but our track let us down slightly. Therefore, in the seniors we came last but a valiant effort from East House meant we came second overall.

Tom Berry

This year we were really looking forward to attempting to hold on to our house swimming title which we won after five years of North house domination. With some amazing swims showcasing the talent which we have in East. Some of those who would really carry the side would include Rafe Scott (LV) Max Fitzgerald (UV) Matt Ludlow (LVI) Tom Berry (LVI) and Nick Going (UVI). With Rafe winning the main event of skins after competing in several other events of which he came first or second in all, this was an amazing feat as others had rested for this three leg elimination event. Max Fitzgerald also held strong to win the Fly and was a useful asset during relays. Matt Ludlow was amazing in the seniors as he brought home another first place for the side by winning his breaststroke and taking a respectable 2nd place in the individual medley. Tom Berry played a key role alongside Matt Ludlow in relays to get a lead in the medley relay and managed to win his 50m backstroke and came second in his 100m free by less than a second. Finally Nick Going had an outstanding day to come in and play vital roles in the medley relay and freestyle relay. So overall we came second to a very strong North side. The fourth Form came fourth, The Fifth form came first and the seniors came second in their respective categories. Well done East lets go one better next year.

Senior House Golf

Rich Eamey

The boys in blue went into this tournament as big favourites due to some of the big names we have in East house. Petit Colin aka Cameron Montgomerie and Tom Hollidge were our two ‘big dogs’, as Hollidge liked to describe the two of them. In the first round we faced Cubitt, Colin didn’t quite live up to his normal standards and lost, but Hollidge came in with a huge smile on his face. He thumped his opponent 4 and 3. Luckily George Gundry and I (Richard Eamey) came in with 2 more wins to give us the 3-2 victory we were looking for. We then went onto face Loveday in the final, Colin actually decided to turn up this time winning convincingly. Other wins came from Gundry, Hollidge and I whilst George Wilkinson had another bad day at the office losing both of his games. We did however have sympathy for Wilko as he came straight from other commitments. East House came out victorious. Cheers boys.
