From the Housemaster

JMW

With three out of the five year groups si ng external exams in the near future this has been a par cularly busy me in East though I hope this newsle er gives you a brief insight into just some of the house events that your son might have been involved in on top of all their other academic, spor ng and musical commitments. The Lent term is tradi onally one of the more hec c terms, on top of the mock exams the boys have done well to cope with really knuckling down to some revision, the pre y horrendous weather and nega ve impact that this has had on their fixtures. That said with the Lent term now behind us, hopefully it will not be too long un l summer brings some warmer, sunnier weather. It is clear that the boys are almost run‐ ning on empty at the moment so I wish them all a well‐deserved Easter break.

Senior House Water polo

James Hibbert

With an impressive number of 1st team water polo players in the squad, East were firm favourites to win this com‐ pe on. The first round match against Cubi was an annihila on, 8 goals going in with no reply from the opposi‐ on. Ed Russell ge ng a hat‐trick, and 2 goals from James Anderson as well as 2 from our goalkeeper Alex Jeffer‐ ies. The final was a repeat of the East vs North final of last year, only on this occasion east triumphed 3‐0 with goals from Jerrick Carne and Tom Berry. Noted also should be the performances of Nick Going and Harvey Jackson, both instrumental in a ack and defence alike. The effort East put forward in the compe on was excep onal, with 11 goals scored, and none conceded.

Public Speaking

Mark Czajkowski

In recent years East has been strong in the deba ng compe on. And this year was no different. A fantas c team of four containing none other than Ted Walliker, Tom Berry, Mark Czajkowski and James Edwards were set to face South’s team of 4. As we plunged into the fires of the deba ng chamber a mo on of ‘Gay Marriage’ was posed. First up was Tom Berry, his urbane nature helped him convey his points with panache. Then it was Mark’s turn to speak his passionate rhetoric reminding me of Marc Antony, as he captured the a en on of the en re audience, who were willing to “lend their ears”. His speech was followed by a highly compe ve floor debate. And then finally Ted Walliker came up to speak. Now in my deba ng career I have witnessed many young debaters, but none with the talent and whit of Ted with his rambunc ous a tude who gave a master class performance demonstra ng his deba ng prowess. Time came for the results, South needn’t have fre ed as they were crowned victors in this close e. However, as a house we accepted the loss graciously. But s ll, there is no doubt East were on fine deba ng form and I thank the team for deba ng so valiantly with me in this compe on.

Cross Country

Before I start my pious romp on the many virtues of our esteemed striders, it would be wrong of me not to list the many characteris cs that best epitomise our gallant lads, bravery, courage, valour, and an in‐ domitable spirit. The senior team stars Mark, Olli, Hemming, put in brave performances, the rest de‐ serve credit, for their valiant effort. The junior team also competed valiantly, with Cal St Johnston finish‐ ing third overall. As usual it was a well‐supported event by all, and as Harvey said when looking at the overall result, “comparison is the thief of joy, what ma ers is what we few achieved not what others did”.

House Hockey

Harvey Jackson

In the fourth form proceedings were started off with a 4‐2 win against Cubi with the 4 goals coming from Harry Gough , with the help of a cra y midfield of Josh Wilkinson , Finn Edwards and Niall Richardson . We then went on to play Loveday fortunately for the mighty East, just before the half‐ me whistle went we managed to scrape an own goal off them which we managed to hold on to for the rest of the match . Therefore all we had to do against North was to win and naturally we did! We were on top and won the match 5‐1. In the fi h form we started out against Loveday and by far the underdogs we came through with a 1‐1 draw. Next in our path lay the mighty Cubi , a formidable lion silenced by the might of the East team with once again a dy draw for the men in blue. Our final challenge on this quest was North, a somewhat poisoned chalice in recent years and despite two wonderful goals, the same could be said of this year. In the seniors we were a somewhat depleted ou it as we stuck closely to the rules. That being said it was a strong day’s hockey. With only four hockey players, (the other 7 hadn’t played for 3 years), we fought strong North, Cubi and Loveday sides all of which had more players in the 1st team than we had playing regular hockey. Nonetheless we fought valiantly. Max Gwilliam was solid in goal, with Harvey Jackson, Monty Clarke and Nick Going showing their class throughout. James Edwards, (never having played ou ield) saw off the might of many a Surrey player. We scored two stunning team goals and never gave up but alas our rugby like tac cs didn’t pay off as we conceded 17 goals. All that is le to be said is that on quality we won but on quan ty we didn’t.

House Climbing—Bouldering

Chris Kinally

With a Team of Max Fitzgerald, Liv Walliker and Chris Kinally we were not only the team with the youngest climber but the only team to use a climber from an affiliated house. We were no doubt the underdogs. There were 15 problems to complete within two hours. The compe on was judged by the number of a empts taken to complete each problem. Max showed a lot of determina on and poten al, considering his experience, he climbed excep onally. Climbing being one of the few sports where climbing “like a girl” is sign of good technique, we were confident about having a girl in our team. Liv didn’t disappoint and gave the boys a run for their money. Unfortunately we were climbing against strong teams and we just missed second place by a few points. This result really doesn’t reflect our individual efforts as we were all content with our scores.

Junior House Challenge

Freddie Norton

We had a strong team for junior house challenge this year, with Ed Russell, Freddie Coates, Ted Walliker and myself. Our team first came up against the south team, who, although a strong team, we managed to beat by a clear margin. This was possible with the vast collec ve knowledge of our fourth‐form members and the veteran, Ed Russell, all with quick hands for buzzing and an encyclopaedic knowledge. The second and final challenge was playing the incredibly successful Cubi team, and our luck being what it is, our team was a bit too sluggish on the buzzer. I have no doubt that our general knowledge eclipses that of other houses, but our reac on mes are not so impressive, leading to a marginal loss. But even though our boys did not perform their best on the day, I'm sure in the future we will have many more successful matches and I am proud to be part of this East team.
