This term sees the departure of Guy Waller, after 17 years dedicated to Cranleigh School. What to say about a man who has done so much? The Senior Management Team and Governing Body have tried to encapsulate in a single sentence (or two) what he stands for in their eyes…

At interview I was impressed – if a little cynical – by the picture Guy painted for me of what he thought Cranleigh could be. Over the last twelve years, I have watched as his plans have come to fruition and it has become harder and harder to think about leaving, as no school compares in my eyes

The move to full co-education – which was inevitably opposed by some – took a real sense of purpose to push through: but it has transformed the atmosphere of the classroom and beyond

Cranleigh has become a serious academic school, with 81% A*/A/B grades at A-Level and 63% A* grades at GCSE. Not to mention 72 Oxbridge offers in the last decade. Perhaps more importantly, Guy has always strived to ensure that Cranleighans learn how to enjoy and saviour the whole learning journey

The phrases ‘community’ and ‘family values’ are used over and over again, yet that is what we are and what we live by, and that, to my mind, is Guy’s legacy

DEPUTY HEAD’S TERM SUMMARY

Under Guy, Cranleigh has cemented its reputation as one of the power houses in sport. We are disappointed these days if we do not have pupils playing at national level

As I write this termly round-up, a time for reflection, inevitably Guy Waller’s departure is uppermost in my mind. He leaves after 17 years leading the School, and what a 17 years it has been. It is difficult to focus my reflections solely on this term, because, as I do so, I am constantly reminded of all that he has done in his time here, and the School that Cranleigh has become.

His disarming approach in interviews belies a sharp mind that sees beyond the obvious.

He can spot talents of all kind, and knows exactly what he is looking for in a prospective Cranleighan

The focus this term has, of course, been exams, with pupils revising hard. Well done to all of you for your efforts and I very much hope the results reflect this. Thank you to the Common Room for all of their hard work and support in your endeavours – and I would also like to thank Martin Allison for his outstanding leadership as Director of Studies, as he hands over the reins to David Boggitt.

Just take a look at the campus: the Sports Centre, VCT, Academic Centre, Rhodes Art & Design Centre, Merriman Music Centre, Cricket Pavilion, West House, Cubitt’s extension, Bluett’s rugby pitch, the chapel restoration… The list goes on. Every single area of Cranleigh life has been carried forward during Guy’s tenure

Away from exams, we have been as busy as ever. Lectures this term have varied from “The History of Skiing” to “Everyday Sexism”; academic trips have ranged from Oxford to Cambridge; the City to the seaside; a Science Festival to a visit to the WW1 battlefields. In sport, we have enjoyed phenomenal success on several fronts. In music, the incredible G-Live Concert celebrated Cranleigh music past and present; the Helen Wareham Encore Concert and Summer Concert saw performances to the highest level, and there were also several successful House music evenings. The UVth and Sixth Form Art and Design Exhibition demonstrated a simply stunning quality of work.

The Junior Play, ‘The 39 Steps’, saw a high-energy, actionpacked, hilarious production by the Fourth Form and LVth. In Outdoor Education, the Duke of Edinburgh attracted a record number of participants – while 22 intrepid explorers are off to China this summer. And in between, House Charity Days have raised an impressive £12,000.

Undoubtedly one of Guy’s biggest influences has been the entrenchment of ‘sport for all’ as central to Cranleigh’s ethos.

When he arrived there were 12 rugby teams and 1 girls’ hockey team. Now there are 17 and 12 respectively. On almost any given day, you can find young people playing sport as far as the eye can see

People come from far and wide to share in our outstanding music, drama and the Arts generally. ‘Professional-level production’ is an accolade that has become the norm I remember seeing Guy on the golf course once, with just two clubs in his hand and running between holes. That is him in a nutshell – always do something, just do it with maximum efficiency

He has created a School that is so impressive that Abu Dhabi (a country with the money to have its pick of the world’s schools) has chosen to use Cranleigh as a blueprint in its own private education

If anyone embodies the qualities that I have mentioned here it is Guy – whose life, particularly here at Cranleigh, has been a commitment to service, to people and to values (Sir Charles Vyvyan, Speech Day Speaker 2014)

Which brings me back to my original reflection. The opportunities Cranleigh offers are due to Guy Waller’s vision throughout his time here: a vision of a broad education for all that ensures everyone gets involved in all aspects of School life. His legacy is a happy and successful School, of which I hope you are rightly proud.

Have a wonderful, well-earned summer, and I look forward to seeing you all back in September.

A TOP SPORT

With multiple Nationals successes and pupils competing at national and international level, Cranleigh Sport has never looked so good. But it takes more than dedicated coaching and raw talent to keep our teams at the top.

Enter Simon Brearley, Cranleigh’s Strength & Conditioning Coach.

What else is your core focus?

In addition to sports injury rehab, I run weekly S&C sessions for each of the major sports (rugby, hockey, cricket, netball and athletics) and provide guidance to the Directors of Sports to ensure S&C synchronises with their sports training. For a small number of ‘elite’ athletes I liaise with their sport clubs/ National Governing Body to provide a gold-standard level of service provision, but I also integrate S&C throughout the whole school by delivering squad S&C sessions and also general athletic development sessions ‘for all’.

What does a typical S&C session entail?

What is Strength & Conditioning?

Strength and Conditioning (S&C) can be defined as the physical and physiological preparation of athletes for sport performance. The S&C coach’s role is to bridge the gap between the theory and application of training.

There are two key aims. The first is Injury Prevention: the priority is to help athletes cope with the stresses of their sport by analysing the most common injury sites and subjecting the athlete to specific soft tissue conditioning and control work based on this. The second is Performance Enhancement: S&C coaches need to understand performance-changing impact; to be able to look at a sport and see what it takes to win, recognise what the best are capable of, and find training solutions to address limiting factors. Ultimately we look at what we can do in the weight room that will transfer to the sports’ demands.

An S&C session could take place in the weight room, gym, track, field, court or pool. We have a specialist strength facility, the ‘performance suite’, and we also have the new Woodland Fitness Centre. A typical session in the gym would involve a warm up that integrates some sports-specific injury prevention, a series of focus strength exercises and some conditioning (often trunk or ‘core’ circuits). With more elite athletes we look to improve specific aspects of force production. With youth athletes I take a pattern-based approach to strength training, making sure they are competent across seven key movements; squat, lunge, push, pull, bend, brace and rotate.

What are the challenges of working with many different sports?

In the busy school schedule my contact time with the students is precious. I look at different sports and identify what we call

‘performance pillars’ – this may be anterior dominant lower body strength for the hockey player (for braking and change of direction), landing skills for the netballer, or rate of force development and trunk stiffness for the fast bowler.

Does your work expand over to CPS? With Cranleigh’s ‘sport for all’ ethos I try to ensure that S&C concepts are introduced at an early age at CPS. This involves the delivery of a physical development curriculum that aims to improve pupils’ athletic motor skill competencies (AMSC): locomotive (moving), stabilisation (bracing) and manipulation (throwing & catching) skill development. One of the most rewarding aspects of the job could be applying a long-term athlete development (LTAD) programme in line with Cranleigh’s 7-18 approach.

Is it possible to monitor the ‘rewards’ of the new S&C programme?

I conduct injury screening with all pupil athletes I work with and review it every term to note improvements. These screens look at flexibility and range of motion, local muscular strength and movement competency. Essentially the ‘reward’ from an injury prevention point of view is reducing the prevalence of soft tissue injuries – something I am tracking. From the performance standpoint, I can quantify changes in speed and force generation (strength & power) through physiological testing batteries I run each term with all our squads. I also have monitoring strategies in place for our elite athletes that help to detect overtraining and increase the potential to help our athletes to peak at a pre-determined time.

Final word?

Cranleigh’s specialist sports doctor was influential in highlighting the benefits of hiring an S&C coach. These include its overlap with the sports medicine team and physiotherapist in the combined delivery of rehabilitation after injury, to ensure that players are robust enough to return to competitive sport without re-entering injury. The major rugby term (Michaelmas) is certainly a busy time for rehab S&C!

FIRSTS FOR THIS TERM On a June afternoon Cranleigh’s U15 cricketers took the South-East section of the National U15 Cricket Cup by a very convincing margin of nine wickets. They then went on to challenge the South-West winners in a tense semi-final on 26 June – and won! The team will now play in the Final on Tuesday 8 July. This is the first time a side from Cranleigh has ever made it to this stage of this national competition.

This term has seen the first Cranleighan picked for a national American Football side. Mario Marset has been playing for the Farnham Knights at U19 level throughout the season. However, Mario was delighted to be selected for the Spain U19 team and is looking forward to training hard and gaining a starting place for the forthcoming International Junior Series.

BEYOND CRANLEIGH SPORTS

ROUND-UP

This summer, 18 Sixth Form students and five staff (including one from Cranleigh Prep) will head to Zambia for the seventh Cranleigh trip. They will spend a week at Kawama School working alongside the teachers, local community and Beyond Ourselves staff, including two OC gap-year students. The focus of this trip is to develop the interiors of the classrooms with a set of murals painted in educational themes to assist with teaching – e.g. a ‘Universe’ mural, a ‘sea’ mural, etc. The team have been working hard on finalising the designs and scaling the paintings in preparation. They will also be running some netball training for the teachers and organising netball activities for the children, as netball is Zambia’s national sport.

So, the Summer Term is boring is it? Nothing ever happens because of the exams? Well, it turns out that’s not quite true. This term we had 346 fixtures, averaging over 30 a week, with riding, golf, rounders, canoeing and climbing complementing the traditional majority sport fixtures.

The team will also be visiting Kasanka National Park. Seeing a Zambia wildlife conservation project first-hand will give the students another view of what life is like in Zambia. You can follow their adventures on the Beyond Cranleigh section of the School website.

Kawama Krafts – Social Enterprise

On the cricket front this has been another very successful season, with the School winning over 60% of our matches.

Both 1st and 2nd XIs have only lost one of their games so far, including wins against Wellington, Tonbridge and the MCC for the 1sts.

The 3rd XI, meanwhile, finished the season unbeaten. In the U15s’ wonderful run to the Final of the National Competition (to be played on 8 July) Lewis Bedford has scored over 400 runs, including three centuries. As girls’ cricket continues to thrive, the fixture card has included matches for U18, U15 and U14 age groups. The U14s entered the Surrey T20 competition and the U18s have seen some very good victories against Hurstpierpoint and Lord Wandsworth and a very worthwhile draw against the MCC. In tennis, the Senior boys’ team, powered their way to victories against the likes of Radley, Wellington, Charterhouse and KCS Wimbledon and, most pleasingly, there are a number of promising Junior players with Rory Calnan, Ed Russell and Sacha Brown all making regular appearances for the 1st team. For the girls, the stars of the season have undoubtedly been the U14 and U15 teams, with both ‘A’ teams achieving unbeaten seasons. Particular mentions should go to Emma Galletti, Izzy Petter, Amy Thompson and Iola Andrew. Amy and Iola have not lost a set all season and have played some outstanding tennis throughout the term – quite possibly the best we have seen from this age group for a long time.

The Kawama social enterprise ‘Kawama Krafts’ has had a very encouraging first year. Five local people – Soldier, Venix, Esther, Mercy and Judith – work at Kawama Community School. The products created are being sold in the UK, with profits re-invested in the school. Cranleighans have also been helping oversee the finances and new product design ideas. Popular items include harem pants, scrunchies, make-up bags and pillowcases – plus tote bags and bunting from July – all made from the very popular and colourful traditional chitenge fabric. Return Visit

It has also been a really bumper year for the athletes. In addition to the success at the Waverly Trials, the boys won the Epsom College Memorial Trophy for the first time and at the Wellington meet they won the Copenhagen Athletics Shield and the overall Copenhagen Shield, again for the first time. At the St John’s meet the girls won both the Intermediate and Senior categories, thereby retaining the overall trophy.

Cathy Hobbs (UVI), who went to Kawama in the UV in October 2012, was so inspired that she is going back to work with Beyond Cranleigh in Africa again, for three months from September 2014, before starting Med School.

Child Sponsorship

Out of the 225 children that Cranleigh School has committed to sponsoring at Kawama School, 155 children are currently being sponsored by members of the Cranleigh community – thank you! West House and South House are the most recent groups to have raised enough money from their annual charity days to sponsor a child all the way through their seven years at Kawama School. Look out for the details of the child they are sponsoring when you next visit the boarding Houses.

There is still some way to go to meet Cranleigh’s target for all 225 children at Kawama School to be sponsored.

Down at the swimming pool the girls’ team was undefeated and the U14 intake is almost certainly the best we have ever had at Cranleigh, with Emma Grainger and Polly-Jane Cunningham breaking 19 School records between them.

The U16 boys were also unbeaten, and over 20 School records fell across the boys’ team as a whole.

All in all, then, this has been a packed and successful season of sport – very well done to all those involved.

Anna’s liquid dispenser was chosen as one of the top three pieces to be displayed in London on Thursday 12 June as part of the wider ‘Made in Brunel’ Exhibition.

Royal Academy A-Level Online Exhibition Shortlist: congratulations to Ellen Farrington (LVI) for having her painting ‘Strangers’ shortlisted for the Royal Academy A-Level Online Summer Exhibition 2014. One of 106 works from over 2000 submitted from 361 schools across the UK.

George Wilkinson, Clarinet (Merit) G-Live Concert An incredible evening of music took place at G-Live early in the term, and it was fantastic to have such a large number of Sixth Formers as well as the 70-strong Chapel Choir taking part in the farewell concert for Guy Waller. The evening was designed to reflect Guy’s personal taste, and also included such numbers as “I am going to wash that man right out of my hair” and “I’m in love with a wonderful Guy” from South Pacific.

Helen Wareham Encore Concert: this year’s Encore concert saw an outstanding standard of musicianship from all of the Junior and Senior winners.

Royal Festival Hall: this term has seen Cranleigh’s Organist-inResidence Phil Scriven perform the ‘Cortège et Litanie’ by Marcel Dupré with the Philharmonia Orchestra, as part of the Bach Choir’s Concert

CCF: numerous UV pupils were successful in their Methods of Instruction test and several also went on to be assessed on the Light Support Weapon.

Canadian Cadets: Elliot Canham is off on exchange with the Canadian Cadets on an arduous mountaineering trek in the Rockies. This is a highly selective programme and he is to be warmly congratulated on being awarded a place.

Devizes-to-Westminster International Kayak Race: this year’s gruelling event saw Abi Dahl and Charlie Norton come in 2nd of all the female crews and break three Cranleigh girls’ paddling records. The leading boys’ pair, Laurence Fortescue and Rob Harrison, finished 13th / 60 crews (U19s) – chased all the way by James Doherty and Jamie Hemming – and the mixed crew of James York and Hannah Warner came 3rd in their ‘Endeavour’ class.

DRAMA RADA Foundation Course: Ben Castle-Gibb has been offered a place at RADA next year.

Junior Play: this year’s Junior Play, ‘The 39 Steps’, was described by many as ‘the best Junior Play ever performed at Cranleigh’. There was certainly no doubting its tremendous energy, under the directorship of Lauren Hyett. The technical work by Seb Bell, Ned Weston, Tim Strickland and Alex Brown was also remarkable: a tribute to the training skills of Mark Jenkins. Please see PJL’s Performing Arts Round-Up, opposite, and the website for a full review.

CHARITY On Saturday 26 April, West House spent an afternoon and evening taking part in 80 different activities. The day raised an extraordinary £6,500 for five charities: Tildy’s Trust, Beyond Ourselves, National Autistic Society, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Cancer Research.

South House’s charity music evening on 3 May was a great success, with £4,170.09 being raised for three charities: Beyond Ourselves, Shooting Star Chase and Children with Cancer UK. Most recently, North House’s talent show and sports day has so far raised nearly £2,000.

Abby Frett abseiled off Guildford Cathedral’s roof for Christian Aid and raised £200, and then baked cakes to sell for a Romanian orphanage, which she is visiting again, and raised £250.

PERFORMING ARTS ROUND-UP by PJL The gala concert at G-Live celebrated Cranleigh past and present. Five young OC singers were among the extended family of the Arts at Cranleigh who helped make this an enchanted evening, with current Sixth Formers forming a ‘farewell choir’ in choruses from ‘South Pacific’. The highlight was Richard Saxel playing Mozart’s piano concerto K466, and to narrate Vaughan Williams’s ‘An Oxford Elegy’, Alan Rusbridger OC and editor of ‘The Guardian’ was invited by the Head to join the hand-picked Cranleigh Voices. Marcus Pashley relished the chance to conduct these, along with music

by Wagner and Schöenberg: ‘Wotan’s Farewell’ being especially appropriate to the occasion.

The annual black-tie ‘Encore’ concert, by contrast, looked to the future of Cranleigh Music, as talented musicians from the Prep School performed alongside the winners of the Helen Wareham competitions. The Summer Concert also showcased many young players with four or five years of performing ahead of them, but with Alex Tracey and Zak de la Bedoyere leaving this year, the East House rhythm section in the Big Band will need to re-form. Their farewell piece was, appropriately, ‘Gonna Fly Now’ (the theme from ‘Rocky’): a knock-out way to end an uplifting concert. It is right, also, to name Cathy Hobbs and Hattie Allison from the Wind Quintet and thank them for five years of fine music-making.

of Cranleigh School. From the opening song Abi Lord brought a sophistication of performance that made the label ‘Junior Play’ seem inadequate for such a slick production, directed with tremendous pace by Lauren Hyett. The charismatic Adam Forrester rose to the challenge of Richard Hannay with English aplomb and, as Professor Jordan, Henry de Villiers provided a chill few actors could have found.

On June 24, the final concert of the year (apart from ‘Rocsoc’, of course) saw around two dozen instrumentalists in various chamber permutations, some playing with their teachers. It was like an ‘around the world of music’ in 80 minutes. A special treat was hearing the Dixon sisters and Richard Saxel playing Gade’s 1925 tango ‘Jalousie’: no better advert for the sheer fun of making music and sharing that pleasure with an audience. Another highlight were two evocative settings of Sara Teasdale by former Cranleigh keyboard tutor, Seb Weiss (premiered this May under Cranleigh vocal coach Graham Wili), with Phil Scriven directing the 16-strong Cranleigh Voices, a microcosm of Cranleigh music-making this term: a mixture of youth and experience; male and female; and Common Room and pupils.

POETS’ CORNER Cranleigh has been home to some renowned poets over the years – and with students currently studying the work of OC James Harpur for their AS Literature course, it is a tradition that is continuing to flourish. The following work by Finlay Johnston (who has an offer to read English at Jesus College, Oxford) is just one example of the very fine writing being produced independently by some Cranleigh pupils.

Implants.

Swelled plastic sheets bear the berries, Where flush on green the white film broods, Heavy, they arch and rise up crude.

Those paunches bring the massing cherries.

Cold tongs prod and tug, leaving bruise, Let us grow them fat, flesh them out.

Underdue we wrench, flush them out, Still, mum, they bleed with split hues.

Sub membrane sag, depressed, the plants, In puce pools their new remain, We sprinkle brew, and then we claim the “ideal for,” pretty implants.

FOND FAREWELLS TO… Richard Allon-Smith,

who came to Cranleigh in 1983 to teach history and has been here for 31 years. During this time he has worked under three Headmasters, seven Deputy Heads and ten Heads of History, and has tutored in four Houses: 2 North, 1+4 South, West and most recently Loveday. Within the History department his wide-ranging knowledge has been appreciated by all students, assisting greatly in their ambitions for the top universities.

He has also run many school trips, including to Russia in 2004, 2006 and 2008, which enriched the pupils’ historical understanding. Outside the classroom Richard’s main focus has been leading careers advice at Cranleigh, giving individual guidance on the labour market, university choices and gap years; running workshops and conferences, and ensuring all UV pupils organise and complete invaluable work experience.

In addition, Sixth Formers have found his oversight of Young Enterprise enormously helpful. He has also conducted many chapel talks and prayers; introduced the first Holocaust Memorial Day; helped with the students’ Social Service Committee and supervised eco-groups, gardening and visits to local elderly residents. The breadth of Richard’s experience means he will be missed for what he gives to the School, but we will also miss a trusted, kind and generous colleague. We wish him well as he moves on to work in the careers sector.

Laurence Ardley, who

first joined Cranleigh Prep School and then moved over to the Senior School four years ago to teach French to A-Level and, more recently, beginners’ Spanish. As a native French speaker Laurence has been a huge asset to the Modern Languages department. She was instrumental in setting up the UV French-speaking clinic and was always on hand to give A-Level pupils the extra help they needed. She was also a great help in sourcing new resources for the department and her experience as an A-Level examiner last year proved invaluable. Her kindhearted nature and all-round willingness to help will be sorely missed. In addition to her teaching, Laurence has been a Tutor in Loveday and played an important role in running the School’s recycling club. She moves to La Côte International School in Switzerland with her husband David and their two daughters, and we wish them all every success for the future.

James Brookes,

who returned to his old school in 2011 as Williams Librarian and a part-time teacher of English. His wide knowledge of English Literature enabled him to make an immediate impact and he was always a most useful point of reference to students seeking direction or extension in their studies. His interest in and commitment to the written word has also seen him publish a volume of poetry - “The Sins of the Leopard” - which was recently shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize. He has been a committed tutor in North House and has also run Archery for the last few years. He leaves us to go to Hampton School, where he will become a full-time English teacher, and we wish him all the best for the future.

Ed Clarke ,

who leaves us after two years to take up the role of Head of Classics at Highfield Preparatory School.

A passionate linguist with an eye for grammatical intricacy, Ed’s devotion to the cause of syntax has even seen him prepare a full set of Latin textbooks to take pupils from beginners all the way to GCSE and beyond (with plenty of Doctor Who and Star Wars references along the way). In the classroom, pupils connected with the way Ed could balance intellectual rigour with the humour one would expect of a touring comedian. Indeed, Ed has spent much of the past two years passing on his knowledge of comedy, whether directing House plays or helping a group of Lower School would-be comics to write and produce an original podcast. Ed is also a talented musician, so was often found near a piano, accompanying this year’s Musical as well as often filling in for the choir, or leading impromptu sing-alongs with pupils and staff in Cubitt. We will miss him, and wish him well in his future career.

Lauren Hyett ,

who joined Cranleigh one year ago after graduating from Oxford University, and in this short time has made a significant impact on the Drama department. Lauren’s energetic teaching style and creative ideas have made her a highly valued member of the department.

Her directorial debut of the Junior Play ‘The 39 Steps’ has sadly now become her swan song, but the enjoyment that the whole cast had in rehearsing and performing the show is a real testament to her talent.

Lauren has been a tutor in South, and her ability to relate to the girls has made her a huge asset and an extremely popular tutor. Lauren is moving to London to seek creative challenges and we wish her well in her future career.

Tom

Marriott, who arrived in September 2011 and quickly established himself as a professional and enthusiastic member of the History and Politics Department. Cranleigh rapidly made use of his experience as a teacher, coach and tutor and ensured that he was involved in every aspect of Cranleigh life. He has coached A-team rugby, including the incredibly successful U15A team of last season, as well as football and cricket. He has run trips to the East coast of America and the European battlefields of WW1, as well as proving himself to be a talented classroom practitioner. He was given academic responsibility in the form of Head of Curriculum Extension, forming a working party to discuss the future of this crucial area whilst successfully piloting the Extended Project Qualification and furthering the LVI Lecture Series with talks from the likes of Freddie Knoller and Laura Bates. He has been an active member of the Common Room, playing for the Platypods (cricket) and Woodpeckers (football)! His presence will be missed when he moves on to Canford School, Dorset as Head of History, but we wish him the very best of luck in this new role.

Clair Neill, who joined

the Modern Languages department in 2003. She and Gordon quickly established themselves as energetic, hard-working and popular young teachers in the Common Room. Clair was soon appointed as Deputy Housemistress of West, where her calm, rational and fun personality was much appreciated by the girls. As such it was little wonder when, following her two maternity leaves, she was appointed as Housemistress of West, where she did a fantastic job and her sense of professionalism and care for the girls in her charge was very obvious. After she left West, she took on the role of Lead CPLO, and this challenging role is one to which she was ideally suited. As such it comes as no surprise that she has decided to retrain as a counsellor, and it’s difficult to think of anyone more perfect for such a role.

The change is a big loss to the School, but thankfully she is not leaving the Cranleigh area so we will get to see her often - and we wish her all the best in her new and exciting career!

Rohit Trivedi,

who joined Cranleigh two years ago after a switch in careers from the financial world. Rohit will be sorely missed by the Maths Department and Cranleigh Cricketers alike. His enthusiasm for both spheres of School life has transferred to many Cranleigh pupils.

An accomplished cricketer himself, alongside Martin Allison he enjoyed an incredibly successful tenure as coach of the U14As last year and has even persuaded some at Cranleigh that Maths is for life not just the classroom!! Despite a relatively short time at Cranleigh, Rohit has thrown himself into an array of extra-curricular responsibilities. He has been a regular speaker and attendee at the “Exchange” (The Cranleigh Christian Union), a Purvis Talk lecturer and a faithful and caring East House Tutor. Among such activities, his self-confessed greatest triumph was an unbeaten season as the U14D boys’ hockey coach! We wish Rohit well in his future career at Hampton School in London.

Hannah Warner , who joined Cranleigh two and a half years ago having completed her undergraduate degree at Cambridge and her MA at Durham. She quickly proved herself to be a most committed, talented and able teacher, who would habitually go above and beyond the call of duty in her dedication to those in her charge. Her lessons were strikingly imaginative and she also played a pivotal part in maintaining the English Department’s excellent record of Oxbridge success. Aside from this first-class work, she has also overseen and participated in the Devizes-to-Westminster canoe race and been a highly valued tutor in Cubitt, North and West. She leaves us to go to the Perse School in Cambridge and we wish her every success for her future career – she will be sorely missed.
