Summer 2014
This term sees the departure of Guy Waller, after 17 years dedicated to Cranleigh School. What to say about a man who has done so much? The Senior Management Team and Governing Body have tried to encapsulate in a single sentence (or two) what he stands for in their eyes…
WHAT A GUY
‘
I greatly admire his decisiveness and (most of!) his humour, as well as his analytical intellect. Most importantly for me, when he quotes Julian of Norwich and says ‘All shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well’, I believe and trust him

At interview I was impressed – if a little cynical – by the picture Guy painted for me of what he thought Cranleigh could be. Over the last twelve years, I have watched as his plans have come to fruition and it has become harder and harder to think about leaving, as no school compares in my eyes
‘
‘
One of Guy’s greatest gifts is the ability to see the potential in his staff, no matter how young or junior, and to provide myriad opportunities for them to explore and use their (often diverse) talent

The move to full co-education – which was inevitably opposed by some – took a real sense of purpose to push through: but it has transformed the atmosphere of the classroom and beyond
‘
Cranleigh has become a serious academic school, with 81% A*/A/B grades at A-Level and 63% A* grades at GCSE. Not to mention 72 Oxbridge offers in the last decade. Perhaps more importantly, Guy has always strived to ensure that Cranleighans learn how to enjoy and saviour the whole learning journey
The phrases ‘community’ and ‘family values’ are used over and over again, yet that is what we are and what we live by, and that, to my mind, is Guy’s legacy
‘
‘
Such a strong and committed character leaves a deep impression. Guy has built a fabulous platform for his successor and the evidence of it will be all around us for many years to come. It is unquestionable that history will regard him as one of Cranleigh’s finest headmasters
‘
I met Guy twice before I arrived – and remember well the day Guy whizzed me around the School at a pace that I struggled to keep up with! On both meetings, and still today, I was in awe of the passion and energy he exuded for all things Cranleigh
‘
‘
Guy has an extraordinary memory for names and faces. I am always impressed by how he is able to share in an achievement or success (or misdemeanour) with the boys and girls he passes around campus
He has moved the School into the top division. Academically, sports-wise and in music, arts and drama it is in a completely different league. He will always insist that it has been a team effort, but every team needs to be led and that he has certainly done
‘
‘
Guy is a man who wears his heart on his sleeve. The emotion when the pupils excel is clear for all to see
‘
‘
Cranleigh School has been Guy’s all for 17 years; he has slept, eaten and breathed the place and given it his total commitment
