Melissa Ryan Jim Copus ’92 Jim Copus is a Crane lifer who went on to earn a Business and Economics degree from Westmont. He has spent his entire professional career working for his family at the Montecito Inn. He began at age sixteen as a bellman, spent time as an accounting assistant, a front desk agent, and now shares full managerial duties with his two brothers, also Crane lifers. They also oversee operations at their family’s other hotel, the Coast Village Inn.

Before joining the Board, Jim served on the Development Committee, he’s been a Development Representative for the past three years, and has also been an Annual Fund Co-Chair for the past two years.

Jim and his wife, Sheri, have two children at Crane — Mason in Third Grade and Lillie in First Grade. Jim loves to spend his free time with family and friends. He also enjoys playing basketball and tennis.

He is also working with students from the Multimedia Arts and Design Academy (MAD) at Santa Barbara High. Bino and his wife, Brett Vapnek, have two daughters at Crane — Lulu in Sixth Grade and Silvie in Fourth Grade.

She won a silver and bronze medal respectively, and was named the US Rowing Female Athlete of the Year in 2000. Since retiring, Missy has been inducted into the Monroe County, IN, Georgetown University, and National Rowing Halls of Fame.

Missy has worked in finance at a large hedge fund in San Francisco and at a boutique sports marketing and event management firm in Dallas. Once Keith was born, Missy has dedicated herself to raising her children and volunteering in the community. Missy has served in many parent capacities, most recently as Co-Chair of the Country Fair.

Leaders: A Second Grade Investigation and leading announcements in assembly.

They felt it was

important to listen to everyone’s ideas. We also heard from Coach Bixler who shared about the importance of team leaders being calm under pressure. From students playing fair and including others at recess, to eighth graders participating in assembly, leading by example on our sports fields, and running the Crane Families program, student leaders are active on our campus! Next, the second graders met with Mr. Weiss. He said that leaders have to make a lot of decisions — hard to make, but sometimes really exciting!

After our work on campus, we were ready to leave in search of more answers. We took a fieldtrip downtown to City Hall.

We met with Councilman Randy Rowse and he told us he enjoys meeting with community members and listening to their concerns. We also interviewed Mayor Schneider via Facetime.

She agreed with Mr. Weiss and said that making decisions was challenging because it is not easy to please everyone. In her case, she tries to make decisions that are good for the whole city.

During this election year, many people have been talking about leadership and the role a leader has in our community. It left us wondering what qualities are the most important qualities a leader should have. Our second graders decided to tackle this question in our first unit of study.

We began by talking about community and our role in our own community. We focused on our classroom community in the beginning and then moved outward to our school community, our city, our state, and then our country. As we moved through our unit, students began to discover first-hand what it means to be part of a community and to better understand the role of leaders.

During our investigation, our class had a lot of questions and the more questions we had the more reading, talking, and interviewing we did to find answers. We had basic and complex questions to ask including: What do leaders do? Where can you find a leader? Who should be a leader? How can we help leaders? What are the qualities

A common thread was surfacing as we continued our investigation. We heard that a good leader is a good role model, who cares about helping people, and is fair and honest. We also heard that good leaders are good decision makers, are hardworking, and try to help others do their best.

By the end of our investigation, the second graders had conducted five interviews, researched online, and participated in many discussions.

Most importantly, they learned that

everyone can be a leader in their own way. When the class shared what they learned with the whole Crane community at assembly, the second graders reminded the audience that in the words of President John Quincy Adams, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.”

We wondered about leaders in our class and the students realized that they have the opportunity to be leaders when they take on the role of table captains and star students. In these roles they help the teachers with tasks, assist their tablemates, and lead our class line. In each role they are asked to model appropriate behavior for their peers while encouraging their classmates to do the same.

The students began to notice that there are plenty of other opportunities for students to take on leadership roles on our campus.

revisiting the stress of testing. In late May, I had completed the course and passed all the testing. It was the perfect time to pack my bags and get in some travel time.

My husband and I took three weeks exploring the Netherlands, Barcelona, and Rome. It was an amazing adventure biking throughout the Netherlands with giant windmills, rivers, and canals everywhere. It was such a peaceful journey through the countryside. In Barcelona, we enjoyed the open-air markets with fresh, local seafood and a full array of vegetables to delight our palates. The stone streets and walkways were endless with courtyards and churches around every corner. In Rome, we did as the Last year marked my fifteenth year at Crane. I was very fortunate to be granted a second-semester sabbatical.

During my time off, I focused on two things: studying and traveling.

In January, I enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technician Program at Santa Barbara City College.

is a semester course of intense training to become an EMT. You might ask what an EMT does. The spectrum of opportunities is varied. EMTs can work in an emergency room, an ambulance, a fire station, or volunteer events in the community. I love the challenge of learning new things and thought these skills could come in handy as the Athletic Director at Crane. With kids in sports, we never know what will happen next. With training as a first responder, I now feel confident that I will be able to serve our community in the case of an emergency or various sports injuries.

EMT training is a very rigorous set of classes and labs.

We practiced during lab time, perfecting our skills with backboards, splints, car extractions, and taking blood pressure. Our lecture class was challenging, taking notes and absorbing technical information for five-hour stints.

Culminating the course, we endured many hours of testing at the local, state, and national levels. It was a reflective experience sitting on the other side of the desk, studying and

We were in classes from 8 to 5:30, and during meals and breaks we talked about the classes. There were three Cate math teachers there, so we spent time getting to know them better, strengthening those connections as well. Math educators these days are full of ideas for ways to engage students in mathematical thinking. Many of us adults were taught the mechanics of adding fractions and solving equations, but we didn’t often get a chance to explore As the 2015-2016 school year drew to a close, we were looking forward to beginning our summer adventures, and at the top of our lists was the anticipation of spending a solid week thinking and talking about mathematics.

Just two weeks after graduation, we flew to Phillips Exeter Academy to attend the 32nd Annual Anja S. Greer Conference on Mathematics and Technology. After landing in Boston on a pleasant summer afternoon, we drove through the coastal towns of Massachusetts and New Hampshire as the sun set and the village lights came on. The Exeter campus, like Crane’s, is a mix of old and new: historical portraits dating back to the 1780’s hung in their meeting hall while we attended classes in a modern, multi-story science facility. The library is a stunning work of architecture, a four-story open atrium surrounded by low ceilings, wood and stone framed galleries, and we learned later in the week about the mathematics built into the design. We lodged in the school dormitories and it was a short walk to our classes each day.

The week was five days of 10+ hours of classes and conversations about teaching math. When we registered months earlier we chose two core classes to attend daily. The rest of the schedule each day was filled out

mathematical ideas or learn to reason for ourselves. There is an extensive community of teachers on the Internet writing blogs and connecting through Twitter to exchange ideas and lesson plans. During the sessions we were introduced to many of these websites and we got to try out the lessons ourselves. Peeking into some of the other classrooms, there were teachers building 3D figures from straws and strings, predicting heights measured with Styrofoam cups of various sizes, and bungie-jumping Barbies. People were counting and investigating, collecting data, and looking for patterns and relationships. We saw laptops open to dynamic software programs like Desmos, a real-time graphing package, or Geogebra, a tool for investigating theorems in algebra and geometry. And teachers were exploring Internet sites like Visual Patterns, which teaches students to learn to use the language of algebra to describe patterns, and Which One Doesn’t Belong, which explores the mathematical properties of shapes and numbers. We gained a ton of ideas and made some great contacts.

We are grateful to Dorothy Waugh for funding this kind of professional development, one of a multitude of opportunities at Crane. Our time at Exeter has made an immediate impact on our classrooms and our curriculum.

She will be remembered for her can-do attitude, vibrant, beautiful smile, and genuinely friendly personality.

Wolf Lauter was a beloved science teacher at Crane from 1977 – 1986.

In Pat Bixler’s

words, “Wolf was one of my first true mentors at Crane. He had a calm yet abundant enthusiasm for the world and students gravitated to him. He maintained a vivarium behind the science lab that at any one time had bunnies, guinea pigs, pigeons, and lab rats. Students would line up during recess just to hold the animals and care for them.

His love of life and reverence for all the little live creatures was a mainstay on campus during his tenure.” Wolf will always be remembered for his kindness and his patience while imparting scientific knowledge to our students’ young minds.

Seventh Grade

Upper School Trip Week The Yosemite Valley

Living with a busload of seventh graders for a week is a walk in the park. In fact, there were miles of scenic and invigorating walks when the Seventh Grade class spent the last week of September in the grandeur of Yosemite National Park. In a program focused on leadership, communication, and personal challenges, the students were asked to work as a team while they hiked the Mist Trail, explored pitch-black caves, went rock-climbing, and laid under the night sky. Each day they had time for silent reflection, to enjoy the natural beauty, and to write in their journals. In English class, the students have been studying the writing of John Muir. Inspired by his words, the classes compiled their experiences in the poems below. It is clear that behind the normal clamor of Seventh Grade socializing, the students were truly impacted by the majesty of Yosemite Valley.

Symphony of Lights As darkness fell and the sun took a break, all I could see were the glistening stars lighting up the sky with a heavenly light.

All flashlights are off, and I gaze up at the twinkling lights carefully placed in the black layer of darkness above me.

The magnificent glory of the night sky shines through the dark like a million fireflies.

As I stare into the blackness, the stars fill the space with overwhelming light.

The stars twinkle like spotlights, making me wonder just how far away they are.

Each star seems to sing its own song, using only light to be heard by those who take the time to listen.

While gazing at the magnificent lights, I notice that even I can tell individual appearance of each lonely star.

They are like little priceless gems, in the dark, black, hope-filled night.

As I continued to gape up at the heavens above, I let my mind drift until I was thinking about nothing but the night upon us.

Glistening and glittering above us, it is as if someone had painted the indigo sky with sparkles.

The silver lights dance like spinning dimes, finally settling down into a shimmering masterpiece just for us.

Upper School Trip Week

Peru This year we detoured off the well-worn path and landed our eighth graders and eight Crane staff in 9,000 feet of elevation in Peru. Underlying the usual rigors of World Leadership School — experiential learning, cultural immersion, traveling far away from home — was the basic theme of a sense of place. The Urubamba Valley is wedged between the snow-covered peaks of the Urubamba Range and the cloud forests that drop toward Machu Picchu. It is often considered paradise on earth, where a large population of people still live with the land, cultivate crops with livestock or by hand, and make almost everything they need utilizing skills passed down through the generations. On this trip, our students had the opportunity to practice the craft of basket weaving, learn the folk dances of the revered Andean condor, play soccer with the local schoolchildren, and visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World — the ruins of Machu Picchu. In a world where the mundane life is a spectacle of color, it leaves us with a lasting imprint.
