Sociology – Educa on

1. Theories of Educa on Education in the United States has always served important purposes. In the past, schools were designed to meet political and economic needs. Today, sociologists and educators continue to debate what education really does for society. To understand these debates, sociologists use three major theories of education: •

Functionalist theory

Conflict theory

Symbolic interactionist theory

Each theory looks at education from a different point of view and asks different questions about how schools affect students and society.

1.1 The Func onalist Theory The functionalist theory focuses on how education helps society run smoothly. Functionalists believe that schools exist because they serve important purposes for society as a whole.

1.1.1 Teaching Knowledge and Social Values One clear role of education is its manifest function—the intended purpose. Schools teach basic skills like reading, writing, math, and science so that knowledge can be passed from one generation to the next. Sociologist Émile Durkheim, the founder of functionalist theory, also identified latent functions, or unintended roles of education. One of the most important is socialization—teaching students how to behave in society. Durkheim called this moral education. By learning shared rules, values, and norms, students from different backgrounds become part of a more unified society. This idea reflects the historical goal of “Americanizing” immigrants.
