Dear readers, Welcome to our autumn issue of Stopress.

With the summer behind us, a busy few weeks lie ahead in preparation for the Christmas season. At the National Crafts & Design Fair (RDS, Dublin, 1st - 5th December) CCoI will once again take an information stand to promote the launch of our ‘Imagined Designed Made in Ireland’ retail campaign (see page 16) as well as over 90 CCoI registered clients that will be exhibiting. Whilst consumer purchasing power is under pressure again this year, the ongoing interest in supporting Irish ‘home grown and hand produced products’ is steadily helping to influence consumers to consider giving Irish craft this Christmas.

Showcase 2011 is also just around the corner. Creative Island will be bigger and better this year and buyer attendance is expected to be high following an extensive marketing campaign (for details see pages 15-16).

We strongly encourage anyone still thinking about exhibiting at the show to contact us as soon as possible (see page 32). Showcase is not just a really great opportunity to enter new markets, create new contacts and network but it can also be an invaluable learning experience, in particular for new start ups – see page 15.

Following recent changes to CCoI’s governing policies, CCoI Board Members have now been reduced from 15 to 12. This meant that no election of GANS representatives was required at the 2010 AGM in July. As the terms for some of our ministerial appointees have come to an end, new ministerial appointees will be announced shortly. On behalf of the Board and staff of CCoI we wish to thank and pay tribute to our outgoing Board Members, Jim Dunne, Sarah Daly, Anna Foy, Jean Byrne and Emmet Kane for their dedication and invaluable contribution to the Irish crafts industry over the past number of years.

Finally, from the team here in Kilkenny we wish all of you the very best in your preparations for the busy season ahead and we hope to meet you at the various events that will be taking place throughout the country in the coming months. Úna Parsons, Chief Executive, Crafts Council of Ireland.

We are delighted to have recently launched CRAFTed – formerly known as Craft in the Classroom - which has now been expanded to include participation from over 900 pupils in 36 schools across the country (details on page 19).

Jim led the sub-committee of the Board who developed the Strategic Plan 2004 - 2006. He also contributed to the work of the Board and Executive on the Awareness and Branding of Crafts in Ireland.

Furthermore Jim was the key Board Member responsible for working with the Executive to develop the Strategic Crafts Sector Workshop, 'Setting the Agenda for Change' in Kilkenny Castle in March 2006 where he also delivered a paper.

Jim was Acting Chairman of the Board between the terms of Martin Walsh and Gerry Wycherley from 22nd June to 15th November 2006, and between 2007 and 2008 he led the sub-committee of the Board on Training and Education.

He was also a member of the sub-committee examining Craft Retail and Promotion opportunities in Dublin and of the Remuneration sub-committee.

Sarah Daly Sarah Daly was first elected to the Board of the CCoI in May 2004, was re-elected in June 2007 and served on the Board until July 2010.

Sarah was a key driver in ensuring design was put forward as a key programme in the 2004-06 Strategic Plan, which led the way for a renewed and energetic programme of design-led activities in the years to follow. During her time on the Board Sarah served on a broad range of Board committees, task-forces and panels including: • • • • • •

The Finance Committee from 2004 to 2007 The Strategic Plan Sub-committee in 2006 The Dublin Retail Advisory Task-force – 2007 The Exhibitions Advisory Panel - 2007 to 2009 The Enterprise Advisory Panel – 2007 to date The Year of Craft 2011 Task Force – to date

In 2004 Sarah joined the World Crafts Council (WCC -Europe) as an individual member and was responsible for pushing through and creating more European linkages at Board level. This linkage with WCC-Europe has since become an important focus for CCoI and Year of Craft 2011 – when CCoI will celebrate its 40th birthday through a nationwide year-long campaign promoting the wealth and diversity of craft in Ireland.

Looking forward towards 2011, December will see the official launch of the Year of Craft 2011 programme. We 4

Outgoing Board Members 2010 Emmet Kane Emmet Kane was first elected to the Board of the CCoI in 1998 having been nominated by the Irish Woodturners Guild and was re-elected in 2001, 2004 and 2007 by the members of the CCoI. He served on the Board until July 2010.

Emmet was a key driver in planning future CCoI strategy and was a member of the Board sub-committee that helped write the three CCoI Strategic Plans: 2004 - 06, 2007 - 09 and 2010 - 12.

Throughout his term, Emmet was also a key person in ensuring that the CCoI GANS (Guilds, Associations, Networks and Societies) members were given greater opportunities for networking and engagement with CCoI. Following the launch of the 2004-06 Strategic Plan, a series of meetings with the GANS were set up and a document delivered to the Board with recommendations addressing the future of the Irish craft industry; in particular with regards to the introduction of formal certification to enable trained craftspeople to teach, and also to

seek formal certification for the CCoI Jewellery and pottery training courses. This led to a meeting with the then Tánaiste Mary Harney, Minster for Enterprise Trade and Employment to further awareness of the issues at government level. Education in crafts remains a key focus of the Board and of CCoI’s strategy today.

Throughout his years on the CCoI Board Emmet has also been involved in many other sub-committees including; the Bursary Committee - set up to look at financial support for craftspeople for up-skilling or new product development, and the Showcase Committee - set up to review CCoI’s future involvement in this important annual trading event for craft enterprises.

In September 2005 Emmet was appointed Chairman of the Audit Committee - set up to ensure that the Board of the CCoI were operating within line with Government guidelines for good corporate governance of state bodies.

Jean Byrne Jean Byrne was appointed to the Board of the Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI) by Mary Harney, TD, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment in 2002 and served on the Board until September 2010.

Throughout her term, Jean has been actively involved in the planning and roll out of CCoI’s various Strategic Plans to its most recent one in 2010. An advocate for enhancing networking and public relations opportunities and promoting Ireland’s reputation for craft excellence on the international stage, Jean was a key figure in seeking out and pushing through new opportunities to tap into the collector markets both at home and abroad. To this regard, Jean points to significant achievements such as the development of critical programmes such as the Irish Craft Bursary Award and Irish Craft Portfolio which have become important tools to help showcase some of Ireland’s top craftspeople and in particular have helped pave the way for Ireland’s presence at prestigious international collector events such as SOFA (Sculpture Objects & Functional Art) in Chicago, USA and COLLECT in London.

Jean’s other key interests included supporting the development of CCoI's information and communication channels via the introduction of enhanced use of digital technology and systems throughout the organisation. Education was also a focus for Jean who was a great supporter of looking at new ways to encourage and explore innovative and creative ways for exchange in this area. She believes that the introduction of ‘Craft in the Classroom’ (now CRAFTed) to Primary Schools has the potential to be of real significance in helping to create a more innovative and entrepreneurial culture within our schools.

Jean’s involvement in recent times has included the development of the National Craft Gallery’s 2011 exhibition programme and the 2011 Year of Craft. She continues to have a great interest in design education and practice through her involvement in the not for profit organization she co founded Design Twentyfirst Century.

Anna Foy Anna Foy was appointed to the Board of CCoI by Minister Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Enterprise Trade & Employment in 2004 and served on the Board until September 2010.

During her term she served under 3 Chairpersons, Martin Walsh, Jerry Wycherley and Laura Magahy and oversaw the development of three Strategic Plans.

From 2005 to 2010 Anna was a member of the Audit Committee which was set up to help govern and put in place tighter financial controls in the organisation in line with government policy for State Agencies. Anna also served as Secretary to the Audit Committee.

From West Cork, Anna is passionate about rural development, having served on many community organisations and fundraised for many projects. During her time on the Board, Anna was a great advocate of strengthening and developing enhanced partnerships between CCoI and other external and regional agencies to increase the availability of; tailored business

Throughout her time on the Board Anna has seen the Irish crafts industry grow form strength to strength and strongly believes in the huge potential for further growth and entrepreneurship in this sector.

YEAR OF CRAFT 2011 UPDATE As we enter the final planning phase for Year of Craft 2011, the programme is taking shape and a multitude of exciting plans are being brought to our attention. We are delighted with the enthusiastic response to our recent call out for information. If you have yet to contact us, please let us know soon what you might be planning – even if your plans for Year of Craft 2011 are still at an early stage, we are keen to hear about your ideas. Please also see the Opportunities section on page 30 and/or e-mail information to Aideen Lynch at: projectassistant@yearofcraft.ie While our printed material will primarily focus on some of the key event highlights for 2011, other recognised, relevant and appealing craft events will also be included on the events listings section of a new ‘user friendly’ Year of Craft website. This dedicated website will make it easier for the public to inform themselves about events by geographic location, by type of event and by date.

Both the website and the programme will be officially launched in early December.

Among the many compelling events, below are some highlights: a The Irish Artists Blacksmiths Association (IABA) is in the throes of preparing for a major international forge-in which will take place in Monaghan from June 22nd to 26th. This massive event will see 400 blacksmiths from Ireland and all around the world come together to showcase their wonderful craft. The event is being staged in association with Monaghan Arts Office.

GANS Project Manager Ann Dack Ann Dack has been appointed as our GANS (Guilds, Associations, Networks & Societies) Co-ordinator for the Year of Craft 2011. Ann will be responsible for coordinating the range of activities that our member organisations will be undertaking throughout the year. a In a major new partnership with the Ark Cultural Centre for Children, we are delighted to present a specially curated show which focuses on animals and craft.

The show is conceived and curated by Brian Kennedy, known for the many wonderful shows he has curated at the National Craft Gallery in recent years. We are delighted too that the National Museum of Ireland will be associated with this show. a The National College of Art and Design (NCAD) will be a hive of activity throughout Year of Craft. The busy programme will include a major show by Danish Furniture designer Hans Thyge Raunkjaer in their gallery.

Talk of Denmark leads us to the World Crafts Council (WCC - Europe) which held its General Assembly in early October on the Danish island of Bornholm where we informed participating delegates from the 22 member countries about our plans for the next WCC - Europe meeting - set to take place in Dublin next June (see below). a The WCC - Europe’s General Assembly, together with a one day themed craft conference, will be held at Dublin Castle on June 8th and 9th.

It was greatly encouraging to hear how enthusiastic the WCC-Europe members are about their visit to Ireland. Some present had very fond memories of the last visit by WCC-Europe to Ireland in 1983 and many more had a great recognition of Kilkenny from the days of the Kilkenny Design Workshops. We are planning an extensive programme of activity for the delegates and we intend to expose them to the finest Irish craft currently available during their visit. While it is certainly true that the economic climate is challenging for all WCC Europe members, the mood of the assembly was upbeat, and we agreed that as a unified body, we have a very compelling case to make for the strength and vitality of the craft sector across the continent.

UPDATE - External Exhibition Fund Decisions The External Exhibition Fund was recently established in order to stimulate and reward the development of professional exhibition and curation skills in craft, to develop commercial opportunities for Irish makers, to facilitate relationships with international galleries and collectors, to increase awareness of craft through education and outreach activities and to enhance the reputation of Irish craft in Ireland and abroad.

Cork Craft Month A Huge Success

Demand to participate way exceeded our initial expectations, which presented some logistical problems for publicity materials, however we produced The Cork Craft Month Guide, A2 trail and calendar leaflet in a run of 50,000 which were distributed across the county in; hotels, retailers, galleries, Fáilte Ireland offices, Cork Airport, on the Swansea Cork Ferry and by craftspeople participating in the project.

August saw the inaugural Cork Craft Month (CCM), organised by the volunteer committee of Cork Art & Design, the umbrella network for all craftspeople in the county, which has spent several years working towards funding for a part-time crafts officer for Cork County. The Craft Month project ignited the interest of Cork County & City Enterprise boards, the Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI), Cork County Council and West Cork Development Partnership, with the result that funding was made available in April for the project, including the appointment of Méabh Ring as Project Manager.

Cork Craft Month… ”provided an exceptional publicity platform for all those involved, and for many, a fruitful sales opportunity… it raised the status of crafts through exhibitions in some of Ireland’s best loved venues to new heights [and]… it brought thousands of visitors and tourists..”

The Cork Craft Month project was designed to offer craftspeople in Cork the opportunity to organise and run their own crafts events in August. These activities, exhibitions, craft fairs and open studios were then collectively promoted and marketed within the Cork Craft Month Trail publication, website and related communication.

Between April and July (a timeframe which proved extremely tight) Méabh and the Cork Art & Design committee collated local initiatives by craftspeople including; 47 exhibitions, craft fairs, workshops and demonstrations, a ‘28 location’ county-wide studio trail, 25 retailer exhibitions and displays, and a full listing of ‘92 active craft workers’ contact details’ from across the county.

Exhibitions and fairs held in; The Mill - Kinsale, Blarney Castle, Cork City Gaol, Ballymaloe House, Bantry House, Cork Vision Centre, The Courtyard Midleton, and The Doswell Gallery all had excellent attendances, with over 3,000 visitors estimated at The Mill Showcase alone.

For the consumer to enjoy and value Cork Craft Month and our sector, it was important that our events within the programme were dynamic, consumer-led and interesting, and our sector met that challenge brilliantly. All our craftspeople organised their activities on a voluntary and/or self funded basis, many promoting group events.

of Ireland’s best loved venues to new heights. Thirdly, it brought thousands of visitors and tourists, as well as local residents in front of our work, giving us feedback and affirmation, and hopefully leaving our audience with an enduring interest in our work.

Fourthly, Cork Craft Month would not have happened if it was not for the input and work of the Cork craft sector. The organisation and preparation that craftspeople engaged in was overwhelming.

Huge effort and time went into the Craft Month events by individuals and groups making the project a truly “federal” affair. Key to the success of the programme was the voluntary work undertaken by our sector to collectively promote the craft industry.

Cork Craft Month was delighted to be picked up by RTÉ Nationwide who featured various craftspeople and the Mill Showcase exhibition in Kinsale – a full half-hour of branding which generated loads of interest in the event. Billy Kelleher, T.D., Minister for Trade and Commerce formally launched Cork Craft Month on August 3rd; he was joined by a large contingent of craftspeople, exhibitors and by our stakeholders, and on every level this was an excellent event.

Media coverage of CCM and the launch was extensive, with pieces in The Irish Times, Examiner, Cork Echo, Southern Star, Independent, and on RTÉ radio.

Last, but not least, Cork Craft Month has brought new hope to the large and disparate group of craftspeople across Cork County who are on their knees financially, but optimistic about a long-term gain from this planned annual extravaganza.

By Sarah Ross Arts Development Executive On July 30, the RDS National Crafts Competition, in partnership with the Crafts Council of Ireland, awarded a prize fund of €28,000 to some of Ireland’s most talented and promising craft makers. The competition’s 20 categories were adjudicated by an independent, international panel of judges selected by the RDS. Regarded as one of the largest competitive platforms for craft in Europe, this year’s winners did not disappoint.

The RDS National Crafts Competition is renowned for celebrating excellence in traditional craftsmanship as well as encouraging innovative design and creativity through a wide range of craft processes. Both established and emerging makers compete for the fund comprising 17 awards which includes the RDS Award of Excellence and the Californian Gold Medal.

The RDS National Crafts Competition has a tradition of supporting emerging makers and graduates of every discipline who have risen to the highest echelons in Irish and International design. Previous winners include internationally renowned basketmaker Joe Hogan, silversmith Kevin O’Dwyer and calligrapher Denis Brown. Looking at this year’s new entrant winners Sarah Mooney-Wiegersma (RDS New Entrants Prize), Sarah McEvoy and Orla O’Connor (RDS Graduate Prize - shared) and Laura McNamara (IACI Muriel Gahan Scholarship Award) there is no doubt that there will be a wealth of inspiration coming to the forefront of craft practices across Ireland.

In the world of needle and stitch, Mary Palmer created a stir with her piece entitled ‘The Long Note in 12/8 Part 1’. The basic construction of her 9ft long creation is in traditional silk patchwork featuring circular holes that are faced in silk. The reverse side of the quilt is as beautiful as the front with the silk faced holes resembling flower like shapes, each in bright and vibrant colours. An outstanding work of fine craftsmanship and beauty, Mary received the esteemed RDS Award of Excellence and the Californian Gold Medal, the RDS William Smith O’Brien Perpetual Challenge Cup as well as first prize in both the contemporary and traditional sections of the patchwork and quilting category. A tremendous win for such deserving work.

For furniture maker Stephen O’Briain, walking away with the RDS Award of Excellence Reserve Prize worth €3,500 was an outstanding accomplishment as well as a major acknowledgment of creative talent and genius. The Crafts Council of Ireland purchased his prize winning work entitled ‘Bone Chair’ under the Crafts Council of Ireland Purchase Award.

During the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show, the overall RDS prize-winners, first and second prize-winners in each category as well as the winners of sponsored prizes were exhibited. If this wasn’t enough visual delights for craft enthusiasts at the Horse Show, the RDS Feature Jump Design Competition brought craft to the RDS Main Arena. The Competition was won by Garvan de Bruir, the talented bespoke furniture designer who is no stranger to the RDS National Crafts Competition. He has been a previous winner on many occasions and was this year the winner of the 2010 Duff Tisdall Furniture Design Award. The Feature Jump designed by Garvan was selected for its innovative blend of simple and light soaring geometric patterns reflecting those found in traditional Irish and Islamic artwork. The Jump received much media attention and was a delight for course designers who used Garvan’s Feature Jump to challenge the athletes during major international competitions including the Grand Prix.

For those interested in seeing the work of the prizewinners of the RDS National Crafts Competition the touring exhibition will travel to the Courtyard Gallery in Midleton, Co. Cork from October 22 to November 19, before returning to Dublin for the National Crafts and Design Fair at the RDS from December 1- 5, 2010.

A Step in the Right Direction Feedback From Buyers

The Crafts Council of Ireland brought significant changes to Showcase 2010 with the introduction of a number of new initiatives, in particular Creative Island. This new initiative brought the beautiful Irish made craft of 58 makers to the front of the main hall, giving it the prime location it deserves for such a big international show. A ‘coffee table’ style catalogue was also created for retailers to take away from the show. The reaction to this space and catalogue from visiting retailers was excellent and so Creative Island will once again take front stage in 2011.

This involved the design of a new logo for Showcase, a new website, comprehensive e-zine campaign to keep people regularly up to date on features and direct marketing to create excitement with previews of the show.

In addition, a number of special events for buyers were organised, such as a welcome reception, retail visits and the Happy Hour to encourage buyers to network and enjoy their visit to Showcase.

The culmination of all these new activities and features resulted in a very positive show for both buyers and our clients in 2010. And for the first time in many years we had an increase in the number of buyers attending - attracted by both the enhanced marketing and enticed by the excitement created through the introduction of an array of new features to the show.

Better still, feedback from buyers who attended the show was excellent and there were very high satisfaction rates in our research. The following blog entry describes how a retail expert from the US felt about Showcase 2010:

For Showcase 2011 we have built on the strength and success of the 2010 show and are continuing to implement changes to improve the show to make it even more exciting and appealing to buyers.

In 2011 Showcase will continue to focus on New Products and Creativity. Showcase needs to continue to offer retailers new products that they can’t get at every other show they attend.

The climate is still tough out there. Consumers in Ireland are nervous and spend is tight. However, to our advantage, people are interested more and more in buying Irish, especially when the product is well-designed and good value. So there are still opportunities here.

Abroad, we are starting to see improvements in the major export markets where again consumers are looking for beautiful well-made products with an authentic story.

2011 is the Year of Craft and Showcase 2011 will be the first major event of the year. Major plans are afoot to get the message out about craft with a comprehensive PR campaign to focus on this message and increase awareness amongst both buyers and consumers about Irish craft on offer.

An Expanded Creative Island: Creative Island will grow from 58 makers to 78 makers and occupy a more clearly defined space at the front of the hall. This year, Creative Island mentoring workshops have been held in advance of the show, guiding makers through areas such as branding, marketing, merchandising and New Product Development. The expanded space will be branded “Imagined, Designed, Made in Ireland” to set it apart from other imported offerings at the show.

New Product Awards: The awards will be judged on Saturday and a special event will be held on Saturday Night at a welcome reception for retailers to encourage networking between exhibitors and buyers. Additionally, a display of the best new products will be set up before the show opens so that buyers can review product in advance of visiting the show.

Trends Display Area and Trends information: The Trends display area of the show continues to prove popular with both buyers and makers as an inspirational zone for display and purchase ideas. In the upcoming show the trends display will feature prominently in the front entrance to the show and will showcase a selection of Irish craft themed to fit with next season’s four top trends (for more information on the trends see page16).

The County & City Enterprise Boards (CEBs): The CEBs will be moving to the balcony, creating a new and exciting space for Irish Craft near Creative Island.

Donagh Quigly tells us about starting up his new company and his experience of Showcase 2010

‘The Handmade Soap Company’ was established in October 2009. Previous to this I had been working as a Thatcher for a number of years, thatching roofs in Meath, Louth and Fingal. A combination of dreadful harvests ensuring there was no thatching straw in the country and of course the ‘recession’ created the need for me to diversify.

The previous year I had experimented with the soap making process having spent some quality time with an oil burner in my sitting room combining scents, however it was not until November 2009 I began to make a serious commitment to this process. And what a month November was - I was still thatching everyday to meet a grant deadline but as I had committed to a number of markets and craft fairs I also had to design, produce and package an entire range of candles for the Christmas market.

By the end of day one, I knew the business was viable. We had secured an order from one of the larger gift shop multiples, along with a number of smaller independents. The following two days followed suit and with all my post show follow ups we secured even more orders.

At our first show in the Naul, we (my partner and I) sold out of our entire stock. I guess after that, I knew I was on to something. Other markets weren’t quite so successful but I wasn’t deterred. Instead I fixed my sights firmly on Showcase 2010. We managed to secure a late entry place with the help of the ‘Meath County Enterprise Board’ to whom I shall remain ever thankful for providing us with this opportunity. I have to say that during the set up process for the show, as well as suffering from my nerves, I did feel somewhat underprepared and amateurish in comparison to so many of the other stands......but there was no turning back!

The four weeks after the show were crazy! Our kitchen became the central hub where my partner and I (with a little help from our mad dog Daisy) worked until 2am most mornings to fill our Showcase orders. I realised that if the business was to progress and grow I would need to establish a small manufacturing plant close by, and so with a lot of begging, borrowing and enormous amounts of running around....I did exactly that! Six months later I now employ three people, one full-time and two on a part-time basis.

“Showcase 2010 really was the event that kick started it all for us!“ Needless to say this year has been a wild rollercoaster ride but when I hear the amazing feedback from our customers and the consumers it makes it all worthwhile. It is so incredibly satisfying to see the re-orders coming in from all of our Showcase 2010 customers and to know that ‘The Handmade Soap Company’ is maturing and developing quite nicely indeed. Showcase 2010 really was the event that kick started it all for us!

Buyers love to see products brought together in such an inspirational environment. It can influence their buying pattern and order choice at the show. Trends 2011/12 have been developed on behalf of CCoI by stylist Eleanor Harpur in association with Emma McGrath, CCoI’s Retail Executive.

By Emma McGrath CCoI Retail Executive For the second year in a row a national initiative that encourages Christmas shoppers to purchase Irish craft and to support the Irish crafts industry will be launched by the Crafts Council of Ireland in November. ‘Imagined Designed Made in Ireland’ is a dedicated retail campaign that includes branded point of sale material, print and radio advertising, supported by an expanded website with a new name www.giveirishcraft.com

This year’s campaign will be featured in 56 retail outlets supporting the sale of products by almost 400 Irish designers and makers. 80 makers will be profiled on the dedicated website redeveloped for the Christmas 2010 shopping season.

The campaign and website will be launched on the 15th of November. Visitor numbers to the website in 2009 were very impressive with 80,000 hits in November and December; We envisage larger visitor numbers this year. Again for 2010, the Crafts Council of Ireland will advertise with a promotional insert in The Gloss magazine, to be distributed with the Irish Times on Thursday 2nd December. This insert will promote the work of 15+ makers, the 50 retail locations participating and will drive consumers to the newly named and expanded website.

Other plans include a press launch, increased activity with newspapers, glossy magazines and a radio advert to run in December. This initiative has grown in strength since 2008 and we have great expectations for Christmas 2010.

CRAFTed was officially launched in Kilkenny on 7th September last by the Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan T.D. The CRAFTed: Learning Skills for Life Primary School Programme, (formerly known as Craft in the Classroom) is the newly restructured Crafts Council of Ireland’s primary schools craft programme that is aimed at teaching children a wide range of craft skills.

The CRAFTed Programme (now undertaken in partnership with Education Centres in six regions across the country and the National Museum of Ireland) will take place during the 2010/11 academic year and will give both primary school children and teachers an exciting opportunity to explore their creativity and learn new skills by working collaboratively with professional craftspeople. Over 900 pupils in 36 schools right across the country will be participating in the CRAFTed programme which supports teachers in the delivery of the Visual Arts (VA) curriculum and investigates how craft processes can contribute to learning in other subject areas such as the Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (SESE) curriculum.

“The CRAFTed programme is designed to build skills, develop competencies and provide resources that support creative learning for teachers, their students and craftspeople.”

Announcing the details of the programme Louise Allen, CCoI’s Education & Innovation Manager spoke about how craft processes can provide a unique opportunity for learning in a range of subject areas through hands-on experience.

“It is widely recognised that education plays a pivotal role in making innovation happen. The development of the Crafts Council of Ireland’s CRAFTed programme that connects creativity and innovation at an early stage of children’s development is timely,” said Louise.

The CRAFTed programme is designed to build skills, develop competencies and provide resources that support creative learning for teachers, their students and craftspeople. It provides collaborative training, access to highly skilled craftspeople and gives children the chance to use their imagination and explore new materials such as clay, fibre, metals, wood and glass.

CRAFTed is being rolled out in 6 education centres for the 2010/2011 academic year – from September to November in Dublin West, Kilkenny and West Cork and then from November to March 2011 in Monaghan, Sligo and Athlone. at Higher Options 2010 RDS, Dublin (September 15th – 17th)

As interest in craft as a career amongst second level students continues to build, the Crafts Council of Ireland once again took a stand at this years Higher Options fair which attracts thousands of students looking for information on career and study options.

Expert advice was provided by CCoI’s education staff on various topics such as: - how to develop a portfolio - what to expect from a third level course in textiles, wood, glass, metal and ceramics - alternative entry routes to craft - and hands on information on the 2 year skills based courses in Jewellery and Goldsmithing (provided by students of CCoI’s Jewellery Skills & Design Course and recent graduates of GMIT).

Students showed genuine interest in the jewellery making demonstrations by Aaron O’Sullivan and Gayle Anderson which attracted a consistent crowd and numerous questions.

Plinths displaying contemporary craft, our career guidance sheets and media coverage in the Irish Times ‘Higher Options Supplement’ all helped make the Crafts Council of Ireland stand a huge attraction and success.

The Society of Irish Calligraphers

Peannairí, the society of Irish calligraphers, was established in Dublin in 1987. The purpose of the society is to develop and promote the art of calligraphy as a modern and relevant cultural practice.

Our membership base is relatively small and based mainly around Dublin. It is our intention to promote calligraphy throughout the country via the schools with a particular focus on transition year students. It is anticipated that students of art could consider taking calligraphy as one of their options. We meet on the last Thursday of each month, from September to May, at Oatlands College, Stillorgan. Members from outside Dublin pay a reduced membership fee. We produce a newsletter once a month which is distributed to our members. This contains articles, tips and information on forthcoming workshops and events.

At present we are focused on the Crafts Council of Ireland’s Year of Craft 2011. With the help of CCoI we are planning to organise a major exhibition to be held in the beginning of June. To this end we have formed a small committee who will fast track this significant project. We are determined not to let this craft die, hence the importance of highlighting it during the Year of Craft 2011.

There are many crafts related to calligraphy such as: design and layout of calligraphic work, guilding, bookbinding, theory of colour harmony, mount cutting, preparation of quills and reeds for writing, stencilling and marbling, and various printing methods. To ensure the continuation of these crafts and of calligraphy the society has many experienced tutors conducting classes in various locations mainly in Dublin. It is envisaged that as membership increases branches of the society will open in other locations outside the capital but will remain affiliated to the original society. Several workshops are held during the year on topics related to calligraphy. A recent workshop held early October was on card making with Ann Cannon (for upcoming workshops and events visit our website www.calligraphy.ie). Last year we held workshops on guilding, book binding, map making, theory of colour, printing and card making. The workshops are open to members and non members.

Our calligraphers undertake commissions and their work varies from certificates, wedding invitations, pieces of poetry, stamp design to lettering in Churches and appearances on documentaries.

Our most recent exhibition, Art in Ink, (Sept/Oct 2007) was held in the Chester Beatty Library. It attracted some 6,000 visitors and over 70 works were on exhibit.

What would you give an eight-year old as a present? Ah yes, a handmade hammer. Made from no less than 260 layers of carbon steel – the perfect stocking filler I am sure you would agree! Lucky Molly Budd has had her hammer for two years and George, about to turn eight, is having his hammer forged over a white heat as I enter his Dad’s (Michael) workshop.

Kids and grown-ups like entering a forge. The smoky smell stirs something in us - something we share with our ancestors. Smells and sounds that have not changed in millennia – fire, smoke, metal and muscle. The community in which our forefathers lived would have seen almost exactly the same thing in a forge as we see today, although like many traditional crafts, it held a greater and more essential role in their lives.

The Greenlandic language has 30 words for different types of snow, the Blacksmith has a large vocabulary for different kinds of fire. The colour; white, blue, cherry red, red, orange, yellow and many more tones between, indicates the heat of the furnace and the time the smith has to get the required result when the hammer meets the metal at the anvil. Such observation is a learned skill – the sooner it is mastered, the more efficient the smith becomes and the fewer pieces of metal end up burned and destroyed.

Most Blacksmiths in Ireland learn their trade through apprenticeship. They work with a professional and then set up on their own. When asked his advice on becoming a Blacksmith Michael recommends to “find a good college that offers a comprehensive two year course, then once you finish that, go off and work in at least two different forges before starting your own”.

He mentions a very good course at the National School of Blacksmithing, Farriery, Metalwork and Welding in Hereford College of Technology (hct.ac.uk) in England, close to the Welsh border.

In Germany a similar programme exists where the student is encouraged to be a ‘journey man’ and to travel to as many forges as possible to gain experience. Michael is often approached by young German trainees looking for a placement. After working for a few weeks the journeyman has to get his work journal signed by the Blacksmith and then he goes on to another forge and learns, and shares, new techniques while helping out.

Michael knows the appeal of the craft having been hooked by metalworking from an early age in his father’s welding workshop in Portsmouth. It was not until he was in his 30’s however, that he pursued a career as a Blacksmith. The opportunity came to him when he became and apprentice with Brian Halpin, a Sligo-based Blacksmith, with whom Michael worked for two years learning many skills along with how to run a business and how to deal with clients. He opened his own forge 4 years ago and hasn’t looked back.

A very active committee member of the Irish Artist Blacksmiths Association (IABA), Michael is heavily involved in nurturing skills exchanges amongst professionals, encouraging new blacksmiths to the tribe and growing awareness of the craft amongst the public. He also organises and participates in events run by the IABA. (For more information on the IABA visit: www.irishblacksmiths.com) Networking, sharing and learning from each other is a very important part of improving skill in the profession. Whereas this happens in most fields, in blacksmithing it is formalised in the great ‘Forge-In’. A ‘forge-in’ is where blacksmiths gather, set up a mobile forge and work on a piece together. In August the IABA’s 2010 forge-in took place in Ballyflanders, Co. Limerick where public benches were made for the village. As the event was open to the public they got to see the smiths in action and also had the opportunity to engage with them. The IABA facebook photos of this recent event clearly shows that there was also a great deal of comradery, co-operation, mutual respect and good fun too. The end result for the people of Ballyflanders was not only the production of some gorgeous public benches, but a greater understanding of what it takes to handcraft quality work.

In 2009 Michael was pivotal to the organisation of the forge-in which took place in Cootehall in Co. Leitrim. In this public project, the local population received a sculptural tree designed by Polish Blacksmith, Pawel Guba who was the Lead Smith at the event. The local Blacksmith and Project Manager was Michael. Again, the population around Cootehall got fully involved, with accommodation, food and refreshments being provided to the visiting army of smiths, in great appreciation for the spectacle the forge-in provided and its resulting contribution to their locality.

Michael is very animated when he talks about bringing more people into the craft – he himself offers courses as do many listed on the Irish Artist Blacksmiths Association website (www.irishblacksmiths.com). He frequently gives tours and short demos from his workshop in Co Sligo and can often be seen at local and national festivals such as ‘Bloom in the Park’ or the ‘Electric Picnic’ music festival, demonstrating his skills or chatting about local blacksmithing traditions and of forging in general.

Public events such as forge-ins, Bloom in the Park and festivals are Michael’s main way of meeting potential customers. For those smitten with the work but not keen to take up the hammer, their appreciation of forged work continues to grow. Many visitors commission pieces such as outdoor gates and sculptural work and some order functional pieces for the home, such as Michael’s successful fire sets.

Customers can find him when they visit the ‘Sligo Folk Park’ in Riverstown – a museum of rural history, collection of agricultural artefacts, a café and of course Michael’s forge.

Michael has never had to encourage his kids to come to the forge, they love to mess about there and have even learned to make a few simple pieces. If you were at the ‘Electric Picnic’ in Stradbally this summer you would have seen his daughter - ten-year old Molly Budd - helping out in the forge making scrolls and points. If you thought, ‘if she can do it, maybe so can I’… then Michael succeeded in winning yet another forging fan.

Cherry pick good ideas from other people’s workshops – Michael loves visiting other people’s workshops and seeing how to improve his efficiency – for example learning more about the placement of machines and tools.

Have a ‘Forge in’ – gather a group of skilled craftsmen, like a meitheal (meh-hill) where traditionally farmers help each other with the harvest. These events are great for skills exchange, are great fun, and often result in a piece for the community.

[The process of a ‘forge-in’ involves the following: A call is sent out and proposals are made to the IABA, for a piece that could be made over a weekend. Then a shortlist of proposals are presented by the IABA, and to the proposed community. For example, in 2010, the community was Ballyflanders who helped choose their preferred option. The winning design, - (benches by Gerard Loughran) were made. Gerard was also the Lead Smith on the project. Traditionally a local smith looks after the project management – and in this case that was smith Eric O’Neill. Each participating smith that attends the forge-in will be asked, by the smith project managing the forge-in, to bring tools and materials. All the smiths stay in the area and hang out together for the few days it takes to make the work. The work is then finished in the local Blacksmith’s forge before it is erected in a public place.]

Keep an eye out for Opportunities - Percent for Art Scheme. Michael is just about to start a commission under the OPW Percent for Art Scheme. He submitted a brief for a local County Council competition and was successful in winning this large-scale work.

Mind your body! Blacksmith’s ‘hunch’ is a problem that some smiths acquire by bending and hammering over the anvil. Michael is mindful that the body needs to rest – something he encourages his students and kids to be careful of.

Take on a ‘journey man’ – they can learn from you and you from them. Help keep the skills alive!

Identify potential markets and plan carefully. The IABA are currently marketing themselves to the ecclesiastical community as experts in forged metal and restoration.

Traditional churches are full of forged work, much of which is deteriorating over time and needs restoration. Quick solutions by parishes, with cheap fabricated metal can bring long-term problems to the original forged work and are not in keeping with the original design aesthetic.

Úna Burke on the Rise

CCoI’s Future Maker Award Winner 2010

September’s London Fashion Week saw the launch of up and coming Irish designer Úna Burke’s new Spring /Summer ground breaking leather accessories collection.

These unique pieces were showcased in special one-day exhibitions at Vauxhall Fashion Scout during both London and Paris Fashion Weeks.

Úna uses traditional leatherworking techniques to produce evocative, conceptual pieces which exemplify the highest standards of innovation and craftsmanship. Building on her signature technique Úna presented her new Spring/Summer 2011 collection of intricately constructed leather cinch belts, corsets, handbags, neck and shoulder pieces. The flesh-coloured leather that previously dominated her Autumn/Winter 2010 Collection has blossomed into an earthy Mediterranean palette of sun-blushed berries, deep olives and rose petal pinks. In this collection, Úna’s wearable art has become somewhat more accessible yet manages to retain its characteristic obscurity.

A graduate of Limerick Institute of Technology where she studied Fashion Design, Úna then went on to complete an MA in Fashion in the London College of Fashion in 2009. Following her award winning graduate collection Úna began to gain international recognition. Based in London, Úna Burke has since built up an impressive C.V, detailing stints at Burberry and Philip Treacy. Her varied and well-skilled background is evident in the expert craftsmanship of her work. Not one to be restricted by any rules, Úna’s designs have a sculpture-like quality. This has not gone unnoticed and her innovative work has earned her many accolades.

This includes a number of Irish Craft and Design awards in 2010 including - a CCoI’s Future Makers Award (CCoI / Irish Arts Review Emerging Maker Award 2010) and a RDS National Crafts Competition award, to name but a few. As well as the London College of Fashion ‘Off Catwalk Award for Design’. Úna was also shortlisted for the prestigious ITS #EIGHT competition and The 176 /Zabludowicz Collection Future Map Prize in 2009.

Úna’s intriguing fashion artefacts have been snapped up by avant-garde artists Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera as well as unconventional fashion aficionado, Daphne Guinness, who wore a piece for Nars Cosmetics A/W’10 ad campaign. Even Ozzy Osbourne is a fan, having recently requested a leather body suit to be flown into L.A. for a dancer in his latest music video. Pieces have been selected by prominent stylists Patti Wilson, Beat Bolliger, Charlotte Stockdale, Robbie Spencer to feature in editorials such as Vogue Italia, i-D, and V Magazine. Úna’s pieces have been photographed by world-renowned photographers David Bailey, David Sims and Richard Burbridge.

As a follow up to winning the Irish Arts Review/Crafts Council of Ireland Emerging Maker Award 2010 a two page feature on Úna will appear in the winter edition of Irish Arts Review.

European Sustainable Craft Networks Finland – Spain – Italy - UK – Ireland Textile Artist Patricia Murphy

Enabling member networks to work on projects together to make ‘craft businesses more stable, profitable and sustainable’.

Louth Craftmark explain their involvement in this project October saw members of Louth Craftmark fly to Spain to be part of the fourth Sustainable Craft Networks Partnership Meeting.

The Sustainable Craft Partnership is a collaboration of members of craft industries from five EU countries including Finland, Spain, Italy, the UK and Ireland. Their objective is to research, investigate and share knowledge of best practice in craft businesses. The European Leonardo’s Life-Long Learning Programme funded the initiative so the member networks can work together on projects that aim to make craft businesses more stable, profitable and sustainable.

“Learning from other craft businesses in Europe is of great benefit to our craftspeople. Seeing that the issues in business are universal can be reassuring, but also seeing how other address those issues can help them to re-evaluate and innovate in their own businesses.”

It is a two year long project that began in November 2009 with a visit from members to County Louth where the key issues for the craft businesses in the region were highlighted and discussed by the visiting delegates. It was at this initial meeting of the partners that conferences were held on the economics of craft businesses while Louth Craftmark, project leader, gave the initial project and planning briefing.

Since then members of the various craft networks have travelled to Finland and Italy to develop the partnership and implement successful schemes. The visits to Finland and Italy provided people who work in the craft sector in Ireland an opportunity to examine unfamiliar practices, judge their value in the Irish market and take home any necessary information and skills that would aid in the development of their own businesses . They also provided a forum for discussion and study of product innovation, sustainability, training and development of craft businesses in Europe.

As well as regular meetings, the member craft networks are utilising the internet to disseminate information and learning through the innovative use of video diaries, pod-casts and web-blogging, thereby promoting informal learning and strengthening mutual learning. The website www.sustainablecraftnetworks.ning.com boasts almost 50 members and operates as a forum for discussions and the real-time transfer of vital information that can be instantly adapted and implemented to suit a native campaign.

Louth Craftmark has been successfully running ‘Meet the Makers’ events in Louth Craftmark at Highlanes Gallery, St. Laurence Street, Drogheda for a number of years and are currently in the midst of another series.

These events allow members of the public, craftspeople and collectors have the opportunity to meet the people who design and produce crafts in a particular region. This idea was noted and taken on by the UK partner group Ards Crafts while in Finland, the makers have adapted the idea are now filming video interviews that are posted online allowing collectors from around the world become more familiar with their work.

Craft businesses produce high quality products, which are labor intensive to make, often involve a highly specialised skill and can include a lengthy design process. As a result of this process these items are usually considered luxury items and are expected to be highly priced.

In an economic downturn, where people invariably cut their discretionary spending on such items, craft producers face a particularly difficult trading situation. Many of these businesses are subsistence level businesses, with little financial reserves, hence there is a great need for these businesses to learn from each other how to make their businesses more innovative and sustainable.

As Hannamaija Peltotupa, a feltmaker in Villava, Finland points out “it is vital that people continue to understand the value of craft.” Heather Parker from Ard Crafts in Northern Ireland feels “that the word 'artisan' itself can now justify its place within the modern day 'craft' vocabulary”.

All the partner networks agree that it is a key goal to ensure customers continue to see local crafts in this light. Place, identity, culture are very important and the ‘design’ elements that reflect these are highly contemporary and innovative in Finland. Many of the networks have now taken up the challenge to incorporate this aspect of Finnish craft in their own areas to appeal to a wider audience.

Many craftmakers in Ireland and throughout Europe face similar challenges of having to design, manufacture, package, sell and advertise as well as manage their business alone. The Sustainable Crafts Network Partnership aims to make this process more manageable and successful.

Craft-makers in Louth Craftmark have already seen the improvements.

Clare Crafts - to launch iconic new Guaranteed Irish logo

RTÉ’s - Nationwide Over the past few months a number of craft businesses and networks have featured on RTE's Nationwide. In late March the Nationwide crew visited two local craftspeople, award-winning silk-painter Mel Bradley (Drogheda) and wood-turner Paddy Quigley (Tallanstown). The crew also visited Louth Craftmark at Highlanes Gallery, St. Laurence Street, Drogheda, Co. Louth to film the festivities that took place over the May Bank Holiday Weekend where crafts people from every sector took to the courtyard to demonstrate their craft from design conception to completion. More recently in September, Dublin based jeweller Debbie Paul was featured.

In late October Clare Crafts are set to launch an exciting new logo that will bring a whole new meaning to Guaranteed Irish.

The new logo will become synonymous with quality craft that is 100% made in Clare. The new logo will promote Irish craft that is made from quality Irish materials paired with leading designs. The logo will be symbolic of products that are designed and crafted in Clare, with all materials sourced from within Ireland, where possible. Outsourcing of the manufacturing of Irish craft has unfortunately become commonplace in recent years, Clare Crafts hope to both highlight this fact and to reverse the trend of people buying what they mistakenly believe is Irish made craft.

Latest News from CRAFT NI Craft NI launch new online craft map Craft NI has recently launched a new online craft map of designer-makers, craft studios and outlets in Northern Ireland.

The listings provides a short description of the craft studios including contact details, opening hours and a key to the studio’s facilities. Each studio provides an opportunity to meet with the designer-maker, discover the skills behind the craft and if tempted, buy something that’s different, original and locally-made. TG4’s - Mo Thinteán Féin Started on September 30th for 5 weeks, at 8pm pm on TG4, a new series Mo Thinteán Féin featuring a number of craftspeople each week was recently broadcast. Presented by Eimear Nic an Bháird (former editor of House and Home), the show was based around her recently purchased home – a 2 bedrooom mid terrace old townhouse in the Kilmainham area of Dublin 8. The house needed a total makeover and each week Eimear showed viewers ways of transforming your home using the best of Irish craftsmen along with interior design tips.

Five NI designer-makers selected for top UK selling events This Autumn five designer-makers from Northern Ireland took part in two key selling events for contemporary craft with support from Craft NI's Trade Development Programme.

CCoI Professional Development Programme (CPD) 2010

As you may be aware the Crafts Council of Ireland has designated 2011 as Ireland’s Year of Craft. Throughout the year we want to promote the very best that Ireland has to offer in the world of craft. We are currently compiling a Calendar of Events Database for 2011 and we would like you to become involved.

(Note: for our online readers - last call) CCoI has one remaining workshop in its CPD 2010 programme with a limited number of places still available. To date feedback from our clients who have attended these courses has been excellent and for those of you who have yet not had the opportunity to attend, we highly recommended booking your place.

Online Events Database Craft events happening during 2011 will be promoted online providing exposure to all events featured within the Year of Craft 2011 program. Promotion of the events will be backed up by a concentrated marketing and PR campaign. The online database will allow visitors to the website to search for events (by location, by date, by type etc.) so it is important that we receive detailed information to include in each event profile.

Printed Programs Printed programs of events with a limited number of entries will be produced and distributed throughout Ireland and overseas via Fáilte Ireland offices. The first program of events will be launched as part of our overall national media launch of Year of Craft in early December 2010.

As the lead consultant, he has over ten years experience in working with start-up and high-growth micro-enterprises especially craft businesses on all aspects of business development particularly in: marketing & promotion, sales, design & development, market research, business & export planning, and presentation skills.

Previously, Francis was Head of the Creative Industries Team at Scottish Enterprise Glasgow and Head of Design at Edinburgh Crystal in Scotland. His professional background is in Industrial Design/Engineering, graduating from NCAD in 1988.

Cost to CCoI registered clients is €40 per participant and includes tuition, materials, lunch and refreshments.

The FÁS Work Placement Programme (WPP) will facilitate your business to take on a person, including graduates, for a work experience placement for a minimum of 25 hours and a maximum of 39 hours per week, up to a maximum of nine months. For recent graduates, they would be given the opportunity to apply their skills in a work situation and to get real work experience to add to their qualification while contributing to your business.

Network Support Scheme 2011 Financial support scheme is available to GANS organisations that are paid up members of the Crafts Council of Ireland.

FUTURE MAKERS 2010 at the Hunt Museum 2nd December - 5th January 2011 The Future Makers exhibition featuring award and grant winners from 2010 opens at the Hunt Museum, Limerick in early December.

Future Makers 2010 represents the Crafts Council of Ireland’s commitment to supporting those who wish to pursue craft as a career.

With summer ending, it’s a chance to look back at the season that’s passing - it is always a busy time in the gallery, as the Graduate Exhibition goes up for one week before the Kilkenny Arts Festival exhibitions. This year we had our Ceramics Skills and Design graduates, always a popular show and a real opportunity to snap up some beautiful bargains from these emerging makers before they head off into the world; I’m currently enjoying my weekend espressos in one of Eoin Glavey’s beautiful porcelain cups!

The Arts Festival exhibitions curated

by Angela O’Kelly were a huge hit Mah Rana’s interactive Meanings and Attachments project provoked many thoughtful responses, and I heard people in various parts of the city sharing the histories behind their own particular pieces of jewellery, and discussing the stories captured on the gallery wall. Embracing Technology was also a popular show, and certainly challenged the

stereotypes of craft being ‘old -fashioned’. The interactive magnetic fabric of Jenny Leary was particularly popular, with some people spending large amounts of time rearranging the fabric squares on the wall! (Read more on page 40.)

Autumn sees the opening of The Narrative Line, an exhibition of textiles by UK-based Alice Kettle and Irish artist Bernie Leahy, and an opportunity to examine the contrasts and the shared territories of their work. Keep an eye out for the artists talks and sketchbook talks that accompany the exhibition (see page 47) - it’s a great opportunity to engage with the work and the thinking behind it , and an opportunity for dialogue about making to occur in an informal setting. Kilkenny Arts Festival 2010 …a great success For the second year, CCoI’s partnership with Kilkenny Arts Festival (KAF) included a very successful ‘craft strand’ which ran as part of the KAF official festival programme.

Kilkenny Arts Festival is Ireland’s longest running arts festival and the partnership was first established in 2009 to co-create a programme to increase public awareness of contemporary craft and craft processes and to celebrate the wealth of quality craft talent in Ireland.

Again this year, Kilkenny Arts Festival Craft Strand Curator Angela O’Kelly and CCoI combined forces to produce a memorable series of events for the duration of the festival. Other key objectives in establishing a craft strand were to provide more education and outreach opportunities to encourage more public engagement with craft. Having craft listed as one of the nine official 2010 festival strands is of particular significance, as it places craft on a similar footing to other arts strands such as visual arts, classic music and literature.

This year the Craft Strand comprised of two key exhibitions ‘Jewellery is Life’ and ‘Mah Rana’ (described below) in addition to an exciting education and outreach events programme which included artists talks, craft demonstrations and kids craft events.

We would like to express our thanks to the Kilkenny Arts Festival organisers, to curator Angela O’Kelly and also to our artists in residence Mah Rana and Lian Callaghan for their support in making this a most successful event.

Exhibitions at the National Craft Gallery ‘Jewellery is Life’

Embracing Technology

London based jeweller Mah Rana presented two exhibitions ‘Jewellery is Life’ and ‘Meanings and Attachments’ in Gallery 1 of the National Craft Gallery. ‘Jewellery is Life’ is an exhibition of Rana’s conceptual jewellery, which highlights the ways we use jewellery to mark occasions and events, significant or everyday. Through jewellery, issues of value, communication, personal and collective histories are explored. The work reflects the importance of owning, giving and wearing jewellery throughout our lives.

‘Embracing Technology’ in Gallery 2 showcased the work of 14 makers from Ireland and the UK who push the boundaries of their craft through inventive use of materials and technology. Combining excellent hand crafting aesthetic and skill with new technologies like laser cutting, waterjet cutting, rapid prototyping, motion capturing, textiles set in concrete, interactive magnetic wall coverings and site specific textiles for walls and windows, these makers expand the potential of craft and really challenge our perceptions of contemporary craft with new ways of making dynamic forms.

‘Meanings and Attachments’ ‘Meanings and Attachments’ is an ongoing interactive event held in different countries creating a written and photographic record of people’s personal connections to the jewellery that they wear.

This very social event thrives on public engagement and the public were invited to be part of the exhibition during the first weekend of the festival. Rana was on site to photograph individuals wearing their jewellery and a wall of photographs was then constructed along with a written record of the wearer’s attachment to their jewellery (see images on page 42).

Lulu and Clare (Meanings & Attachments)

Both the ‘Jewellery is Life ‘and ‘Embracing Technology’ exhibitions saw hundreds of people taking part in craft activities and sharing craft stories as part of CCoI’s Craft Strand Education & Outreach Programme, which this year had a strong emphasis on public engagement.

Mah Rana’s residency in the National Craft Gallery resulted in a lot of lively discussion, as the gallery was transformed into a photographic studio for 3 days.

Over 72 visitors to the gallery were photographed and interviewed about their attachment to their jewellery with many of these wonderful stories becoming part of the exhibition. ‘Meanings and Attachments’ will continue to build a library of stories as the exhibition continues, some of which will be published in a book due out next year.

Participant in the workshops

Another key public engagement aspect to this year’s festival programme was with textile artist Lian Callaghan who was also artist in residence in the Castle Yard. Throughout the week hundreds of visitors to the Caste Yard got to roll up their sleeves and were introduced to the craft of weaving on Lian’s Giant Loom - collectively producing a 9 foot woven rug. The final product and the making of this rug was such a success that it is due to be housed in one of Kilkenny’s civic offices.

Again this year the children’s craft workshops were hugely popular with over 200 young crafters participating in workshops relating to the NCG exhibitions in a specially erected creative craft zone in the Castle Yard.

Education & Outreach Programme Update Dear Readers, It has been a busy few months for Education and Outreach with the Kilkenny Arts Festival (KAF) and the continuation of our ‘Late Dates’ and ‘Artists Talks’ at the National Craft Gallery (NCG).

August saw Kilkenny musician Jeremy Hickey exploring the growing use of technology in the creative process in his tour of the ‘Embracing Technology’ KAF exhibition in this very popular ‘Late Date’ event. For September’s ‘Late Date’ the NCG opened its doors for the first time for Culture Night. The evening was a great success with plenty of visitors drawn in by a wonderful spectacle in the Castle Yard of handmade paper and willow lanterns - facilitated by artist Jean Conroy. The CCoI Jewellery students also opened their studio doors to the public and hosted the enormously popular Culture Vulture workshop with Dublin singer songwriter Jennifer Evans rounding off the evening with a haunting performance in the gallery.

We are really looking forward to the upcoming textiles exhibition ‘The Narrative Line’ with Alice Kettle and Bernie Leahy (see page 48). On Friday 29th October - the day of the exhibition opening - both artists will give a public talk at 3pm about their work.

To mark National Design Week, textile artist Bernie Leahy will be back to do a sketchbook talk at the NCG on Friday the 5th of

November and will discuss her ideas and inspiration, and the process of building an artwork. She will also give us a demonstration in this highly practical session.

On Friday, November 26th we will have the final ‘Late Date’ of the year with Tipperary poet and writer Grace Wells, who will give us a guided tour of the exhibition as well as a reading from her new work inspired by The Narrative Line.

The Narrative Line Bernie Leahy and Alice Kettle 29th October 2010 - 12th January 2011 The Narrative Line is a two-person exhibition featuring work by UK-based Alice Kettle and Irish artist Bernie Leahy. Working through the medium of textiles, both employ thread and line as a narrative function, in the way that it describes the relationships between the characters and objects they depict. With remarkable fluidity and skill, both artists draw upon their daily lives as the raw material for their work.
