By connecting and collaborating with students, stakeholders and industry alike, we’ve developed a range of philanthropic initiatives that are focused into three key pillars – Student Success, Community Impact and Industry and Growth. CQUniCares Student Success Fund CQUni cares about students above all else.
Ranked #1 in Australia for social equity and #2 for first generation student ratio6, we understand that regional and rural communities are disadvantaged in terms of access to services – the tyranny of distance means accessing quality vocational and tertiary education is more difficult, and therefore more expensive, than what is experienced by metropolitan students.
Scholarships
Whilst research continues to suggest an increase in participation in higher education from disadvantaged groups, the unique challenges faced by those located in regional and remote communities can prevent many students from completing their qualification.7
Scholarships enable students to access or complete their education, meaning they can go on to support their family and give back to their communities.
Simply, the costs associated with purchasing textbooks and study materials and travel to and from university classes, compulsory residential schools or unpaid work placements, on top of daily living expenses, can weigh heavily on a student’s ability to continue their studies. Add to this, a large percentage of regional students have the added complexity of supporting family members and relying on part-time employment to get them through.8 Many students need extra help to succeed.
Emergency grants provide immediate financial assistance to students experiencing real financial hardship. These grants help students at a time when they are experiencing a critical situation that has the potential to derail their studies.
Your support will reduce the financial burden of study for students and enable their success through generous scholarships, emergency grants and academic prizes.
Academic prizes recognise and reward student dedication and achievement. Awarded annually, they can inspire students to work hard and do their best. Through financial or in-kind recognition, academic prizes provide high-achieving students with an important acknowledgment of their commitment to hard work and academic excellence.
Scholarships provide financial support and development opportunities to new and continuing students. The impact of a scholarship goes far beyond the immediate financial need, allowing students to feel supported and encouraged throughout their study, whilst also providing connection opportunities for both the donor and student.

Emergency grants are an important program that enable students to continue their studies in a time of need.

‘It’s not just the money that makes a difference to your studies – it’s the fact that someone believes in you enough to invest in your future and help you reach your potential. My scholarship has ultimately allowed me to be in a position to help others that wouldn’t otherwise have access to specialist allied health services. I have a passion to work within Aboriginal communities alongside the government to help close the gap between Indigenous and nonIndigenous Australians. Without my scholarship, I would have been working 25 hours a week as well as studying full-time, so the scholarship helped ease that burden and allowed me to focus on my studies.’
‘I want my children to have a great future. I can make it through the degree with financial support – so I can provide a better future for them. I’m a single parent, and I struggle financially, but I didn’t want to give up on my passion of becoming a Nurse. My scholarship helped out a lot with bills and allowed me to get childcare when I needed it. My family is my motivation to do better. I am the first person in my immediate family to attend university, but now my children want to attend university too. The future is bright with education and I believe that the support for students offered by CQUniCares is really important – It’s life-changing. ‘Knowing that I have the support encourages me and assists me in the belief that I can achieve my dream. Due to having cerebral palsy, I walk with callipers and a walking frame and when not in those I use a wheelchair, so leaving my support and moving to a totally different environment where I had to take care of myself and continue with my studies was rather daunting. My scholarships have helped me with my textbooks, university fees and accommodation expenses and allowed me to focus on my studies without having to worry about my finances. I hope to use the skills from my degree to build new technology and help others in the same position, providing more independence and improving their quality of life.’

Our commitment to building strong, productive and mutually beneficial partnerships allows us to identify the real issues that matter to regional and remote communities – and through research, we can deliver positive outcomes for the regions we serve. By providing a wide range of quality education and training options, we are contributing to community resilience and building capacity – providing people with the opportunity to live, study and stay in their local communities.
Research By generating new ideas and technologies, university research increases productivity across the economy. CQUniversity plays an important role in improving the productivity of various Australian sectors by addressing some of the most pressing issues affecting our regional industries.9 Our world-class researchers are developing new knowledge and impactful innovation across a broad range of areas including agriculture and food security, health sciences and aged care, education, domestic violence, sleep factors, internet of things, and railway technology.10 You can help us undertake change-making research that will drive technological improvements, contribute to efficiencies, solve problems, and ultimately improve the way we live, work and do business every day.

Applied Research with Real Results When it comes to protecting crops from pests and diseases, rapid detection is a vital element for ensuring a successful response. The large-scale nature of the agricultural industry can make it difficult for primary producers to cover the hectares required – resulting in many problems going unnoticed until it’s too late. The use of drones loaded with high-definition, thermal and multi-spectrum cameras as research tools for monitoring crops is increasing across the horticulture sector. CQUniversity is working with primary producers to measure the impacts on horticultural management of crop monitoring by drone. Data will allow the growers and the horticulture industry to make informed decisions about large-scale adoption of the new technology. This study, lead by Dr Chengyuan (Stephen) Xu harnesses drone technology to ensure monitoring is efficient and economical – while gathering a vast amount of crop and environment information.

Engagement and Social Innovation Engagement and social innovation are at the centre of our strategic vision. The first and only Australian university to achieve global social innovation network Ashoka U membership, CQUniversity is best‑placed to focus research, education and training activities on solving the real issues. This is achieved through human-centred innovation and through growing social, economic and inter‑generational impact across the national footprint. Our Indigenous engagement, mentoring and connection programs delivered into low socio‑economic primary and high schools are also making a positive impact on future generations and changing paths for the better. Raising Aspirations through AIME Following the success of the program in Central Queensland, the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) was expanded in 2018 to include Far North Queensland, thanks to BHP’s philanthropic partnership with CQUniversity. Through mentoring, the program aims to raise the aspirations of regional Indigenous students and highlight the positive benefits associated with pursuing higher education. AIME plays a crucial role in overcoming educational disadvantage across Indigenous communities. 94% of AIME participants over the last 5 years completed Year 1211, compared to only 37.9% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons aged 15+ across Queensland.12

Life-changing Collaborations In 2012, CQUniversity welcomed the appointment of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement) – a key role jointly funded with BHP who shares our passion and commitment for making a difference. Aimed at closing the gap and improving health and education outcomes for Indigenous Australians, the research position also plays a key role in leading CQUniversity’s engagement with local Indigenous communities across the nation. Through research and engagement, we can identify some of most pressing issues affecting our nation and work closely with our community partners to identify real solutions that positively impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
Global Outreach Our students are encouraged to participate in impactful global programs which allow them to experience the world, build compassion and make a difference. Your help can increase the number of students who are able to embark on life-changing global projects that expand their horizons and make a positive impact on the world around us.

CQUniCares Industry and Growth Fund Around seven out of ten graduates at regional universities go on to work in a regional area, which is why CQUni cares about expanding the reach of education and training. Jobs and productivity contribute to the supply of labour and growth right across our nation – and in regional Australia in particular.13

To deliver on our promise of accessible, inclusive education, CQUniversity has partnered with a range of other providers to provide local tertiary education study support into small communities that otherwise wouldn’t have this opportunity. Led by each region, we cooperate with public and private organisations to deliver study hubs in centres including Charters Towers (Qld), Port Pirie (SA), Cooma (NSW) and Broome, Busselton, Geraldton and Karratha (WA).

We deliver free preparatory courses, including specialised Indigenous curriculum, to ensure students have the skills to enter university and excel in their studies. We also have a range of externally-funded outreach programs focusing on primary and secondary students, and adult learners. Your support for these programs will help our communities develop and follow their aspirations for education and the associated benefits such as higher income and more fulfilling work.14

Growing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Capacity
Preparing our Paramedics of Tomorrow
STEM Central opened in 2018 in Gladstone to address the local and national Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills shortage, and inspire future generations of STEM professionals. In partnership with Australia Pacific LNG, STEM Central is an engaging state-of-the-art facility focused on delivering STEM learning and engagement activities and events to encourage community participation in STEM, research, and STEM professional development sessions for primary and secondary teachers.
Paramedic students at CQUni benefit from access to a purpose-built training ambulance thanks to a philanthropic donation made by The John Villiers Trust. Designed to provide students with simulated learning experiences, the vehicle has been fitted out to Queensland standards and enables students to gain practical experience in a fully functional vehicle, before completing clinical placement. This type of equipment and practical learning experiences ensure that our graduates are work‑ready and well-equipped to respond in a crisis.
