STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE (SOP) Use of Red Carpet at Institutional Events 1. Purpose To provide clear guidelines on the appropriate and consistent use of a red carpet at CPUT events, ensuring alignment with institutional protocol and preserving the significance of ceremonial practices. 2. Scope This SOP applies to all faculties, departments, and units involved in planning and hosting events under the CPUT name. 3. Guiding Principle The red carpet is a symbol of prestige and honour and must be used selectively. Not every event or engagement is a red carpet event. The inappropriate or excessive use may dilute its significance and impact. 4. Appropriate Use A red carpet may be approved for: • • •

Official visits by high-level dignitaries (e.g. Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Ambassadors, Presidents) Major institutional ceremonies (e.g. graduations, official openings, landmark events) Events where formal protocol requires elevated ceremonial recognition

5. Inappropriate Use A red carpet should not be used for: • • • •

Routine meetings or internal engagements Internal institutional events, seminars, conferences, and similar engagements Standard stakeholder visits without dignitary status Day-to-day operational or administrative activities

6. Approval Process • •

All requests for the use of a red carpet must be submitted in advance to the Marketing and Communication Department (MCD). Requests must include a clear motivation aligned with protocol guidelines.

7. Compliance All event organisers are required to adhere to this SOP.
