TECH BUZZ 1 Investment opportunities

Introduction Scientific insights and academic breakthroughs draw interest and enthusiasm from the research community. However, without a partner willing to commit in bringing the invention to the marketplace, many potential benefits of these breakthroughs are likely to end in the laboratory. With a focus on societal and economic impact, we develop and commercialise technologies developed by Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) academics and students. The vision of CPUT Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is thus, ‘to provide a technology transfer process that creates value for the people of South Africa.’ The TTO supports CPUT’s researchers, staff and students, offering commercial skills and a range of specialist resources in order to maximise innovation impact. Income is shared with those involved according to the IPR Act, and profits from commercialisation are returned to the University to benefit research and education. Technology Buzz presents some of the recent technologies emanating from CPUT research in opportunity segments. We pride ourselves on working at the pace of businesses, in both licensing CPUT intellectual property and in creating and sustaining relationships with industry. We strive to make the process as easy as possible, providing a strong foundation for a long-term relationship between CPUT and the industry partner. Amaya Space (Pty) Ltd is a leading nanosatellite-focused space manufacturing and services company on the African continent with its sights set on delivering game-changing and innovative solutions. As a spinout company of the prestigious satellite programme of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, it commercialises the innovative nanosatellite communications solutions as well as complete missions that have been developed at CPUT over the past 10 years. With CPUT it has gained extensive space heritage through an expanding global customer base. Radio systems and other space technologies developed at CPUT are also used in many satellites from around the world. The sale of these subsystems will be a key revenue source in the short term. It is envisaged that the portfolio of subsystems and the volume of sales will continue to grow over the next decade.

Amaya Space

In 2013, CPUT made history with launch of ZaCube-1, South Africa’s first nano satellite. ZaCube-2 was launched in December 2018. This will be the most advanced CubeSat developed in South Africa. It has two payloads. The first developed in collaboration with the CSIR is directed at detecting veld fires. The second developed in collaboration with Stone 3 will allow us to track shipping along our coastline. The CPUT intellectual property in the subsystems and CubeSats will be transferred to Amaya Space to roll out as commercial offerings. R&D activities will remain at CPUT, with the company focussing on manufacturing and retail initially. Within 5 years however the company will extend its offering to machine to machine communication systems. The focus here will be on information and connectivity. This will open up a new customer base, which includes private companies. This will ramp up income significantly. A key value of the company is to be a fully transformed space company. This is in contrast to the current South African space companies that are generally not representative of the nation’s demographics. Amaya Space will focus on employing young black South African graduates. Amaya Space also seeks to be a catalyst for the space sector in South Africa. Thus it will procure components from other South African companies ensuring that the entire sector grows. The company is set to ascend to the stars with its advanced technology offering and inclusive business model. It is our hope that you can be part of this success. Bambara Groundnut The Bambara Groundnut, or round bean, is widespread in Africa where it is known by various names. It has potential as a cash crop, owing to its nutritional composition, functional properties and antioxidant potential. Consequently, we at CPUT have used the Bambara Groundnut as a raw material to create several value-added products. These include dairy-substitutes, bakedgoods, meat-substitutes, and beverages. These products are gluten-, lactose- and cholesterol-free. The advantages of this range are that it: • lowers cholesterol • stabilises blood glucose levels • And acts as an effective detox aid. This groundnut is able to grow under drought conditions. This offers a great opportunity to South African farmers as the Bambara Groundnut is less risky to grow with a lead time of merely 4-5 months. There is a growing consciousness and demand towards healthier diets. Furthermore, the cases of lactose intolerance are growing. This has created an opportunity that we believe the Bambara Groundnut can fulfil. This is a high margin market that can lead to better returns. Aonyx Holdings (Pty) Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of CPUT) is looking to create a manufacturing business, vertically integrating with other sectors in the country. Phase 1 of this business would be to create a manufacturing facility in South Africa. This will allow us to supply the local market, as well as to export product to the UK and US in the medium-term. Phase 2 would be to set-up a manufacturing plant in India, which allows access to the Asian market. The preferred commercialisation route is a joint venture with a strategic partner who will help to move this business forward. The partner would ideally invest in the entity. The partner would also bring management experience to the company.

inventors Victoria Jideani; Yvonne Murevanhema BamFibre is a natural, gluten-, lactose- and cholesterolfree soluble and insoluble fibre developed at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. BamFibre acts as a stabiliser and cryoprotectant in food, aids detoxification and waste excretion and is suitable for high temperature application such as baking. The recommended daily dietary fibre intake ranges from 30 – 40 g/day, with suggestions made by most nutritionists and dieticians that 20 – 30% of dietary fibre intake should be from soluble dietary fibre. Commercially, cotyledon and hull fibres from peas are available for food applications; however fibres from other pulse sources are scarce. Hence, it is necessary to obtain additional food sources of dietary fibre, in particular those with superior functional properties for use in various food applications.

BamPro is a natural, great tasting, lactose and cholesterol free yoghurt-like drink. It is naturally low in fat and rich in protein, fibre and antioxidants with added probiotics for maintaining good balance and composition of intestinal flora. BamPro is produced from whole milled Bambara fermented with lactic acid bacteria to produce Bambara groundnut probiotic beverage. It contains all the goodness of the seeds especially the pigments on the hulls that includes phenolic and flavonoids contributing to nutritional wellbeing of the consumers. Further, it is high in proteins and total dietary fibre with anti-oxidant activity, which protects the probiotics during storage and provides a longer shelf life of 28 days at 5°C. Bambara Groundnut Meat Substitutes

Bambara protein products are natural, gluten and cholesterol free meat sustitutes that resemble meat in terms of taste, flavour and appearance. BamTofu and BamPolony are natural groundnut curdlike and polony-like products produced from the Bambara groundnut. The products are gluten- and cholesterol-free, low in calories and high in protein and essential minerals and vitamins. Bambara meat substitutes are an alternative source of protein for vegans, vegetarians and health conscious individuals.

The Bambara groundnut contain up to 60% carbohydrate, 16% to 20% protein, low levels of oil (6% to 8%) and are a rich source of minerals and essential amino acids. UAV Services Unmanned aerial vehicle services is an emerging market for services built around flying robots that can be remote-controlled or flown autonomously. We foresee that these offerings will become commonplace in the post-industrial society. Importantly UAV services is not just about the aircraft. The value lies in the complete solution. Here the UAV is used to capture the relevant data. The service provider then interprets the data using purpose built algorithms resulting in information and reports that the end user is easily able to understand and utilise. The UAV Guardian Squadron developed at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology can be integrated to and configured for most UAV services. The team includes specialists in the field of remote sensing, geodesy, and environmental sciences. They are thus able to provide both outstanding flight performance, collection of data, and the interpretation thereof achieving the highest quality and precision. The service is a complete offering ensuring that the customer gets precise and reliable information to guide the business forward. An example of a UAV service offering is the physical mapping based application developed at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The system was used to physically map a remote island to obtain aerial images of seabirds nesting, mammal colonies as well as other data on a wide variety of environmental problems that threaten biodiversity. The information generated has proved the Squadrons state-of-the-art ability to match the results of traditional land surveying methods without the cost and risk involved. Oceans hold the promise of immense resource wealth and great possibility for boosting economic growth, employment and innovation. South Africa is surrounded by vast oceans with immense potential as an untapped resource - the potential to contribute billions of rand to the GDP and offer employment to a great number of South Africans. Operation Phakisa focuses on unlocking the economic potential of South Africa’s oceans with the goal of stimulating the local economy and deepening economic transformation. In response to this vision, CPUT has developed the Coastal Observer that can play a significant role in managing the countries coastline.

Coastal Observer

The smart buoy enables users to get real-time data through wireless telemetry from a range of sensors mounted to, and powered by, the platform. It provides knowledge that would enable better understanding of the coastal environment. The range of offerings can be customised based on the specific need. For example, it could provide an alert when a red tide is about to develop along the coast. Where red tides occur, dead fish wash up on shore for up to two weeks after a red tide has been through the area. In addition to killing fish, the toxic algae contaminate shellfish. The changes in dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide in the water can be determined using specific sensors on the Costal Observer thus allowing for accurate predictions. South African also has a problem on the coast with illegal fishing, costing the industry an estimated R4 billion annually. The system can monitor illegal activity on the coast thereby allowing for informed interventions directed at protection of resources. When servicing existing market offerings, technicians have to remove the entire buoy from the ocean. This means that crucial data cannot be collected during service periods. To counter this problem, the Coastal Observer has a modular design to improve the operational procedures. The modular design allows for eased maintenance and repairs as modules are of manageable size and simply be replaced with service modules when required. As a further advantage the buoy will feature locally sourced components. The Cleancolytic Reactor System developed at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology is a one-step waste water treatment system consisting of highly reactive nanoparticles immobilized in a specialised reactor system for the purpose of treating industrial wastewater. The system utilizes a nanoparticle catalyst, which activates an oxidizer in order to produce sulfate radicals that attack and degrade organic pollutants (dyes) in the textile wastewater. The system allows the re-usage of effluent water in one continuous process, thereby reducing the use of input water and lowering operating cost. Benefits • The technology eliminates the extra operating step and cost of removing catalyst residues and sludge from the effluent water • The system does not produce by-products which fouls the membranes • The reactor operates at a competitively low pressure (max 4 kPa) relative to membrane technology, which requires a minimum pressure of 100 kPa • The Cleancolytic Reactor can be incorporated into existing wastewater treatment plants Offering We are seeking partners who would like to invest in the technology development directed at finalising the commercial reactor and process designs.

The Adult Diaper consists of a reusable outer casing and a disposable biodegradable inner lining that can be easily removed. There is a need for affordable, well designed and absorbent adult diapers for the elderly market. The cost for individuals or care homes are high in terms of the disposal of used diapers. The current suppliers are excessively expensive or of very bad quality. Elderly individuals on a pension cannot afford the diapers. A consequence is that charity organisations are sponsoring the items as part of community outreach projects but this is expensive and not sustainable. Cape Peninsula University of Technology seeks to be a leader in the field of innovation. In this spirit, the university has created a new category of researcher directed at innovation. The researcher will focus on innovation related research and/or creative outputs. It is envisaged that this will allow the University to grow its Innovation pipeline significantly, with a concomitant increase in Innovation related funding as well as increased contract research capacity. The CPUT Innovation Fellow is distinct from a postdoctoral fellow. EMERGENCY MEDICINE MEDICAL DEVICE INNOVATION

Healthcare provision is embracing new technological opportunities that increase both effectiveness and efficiency of service provision in an unprecedented manner. Through the focus on outcomes-based medicine and improved health management of populations, demand for digital solutions in all areas of health-care – and especially in emergency care – will rise. Furthermore, low-cost technologies in medicine are seen as a way to reach Universal Health Coverage for fast-growing African economies. The department of Emergency Medical Sciences at CPUT is a recognized and well established school and the only provider of a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Medical Care in the Western Cape. An innovative team of international academics and practitioners at CPUT now strive to apply technologies to provide real-time decision support to practitioners on the ground.

South Africa ranks as one of the top ten countries with three out of a total of 36 global hotspots. Thus the development of a Bioeconomy is an important goal. The term “Bio-economy” encompasses biotechnological activities and processes that translate into economic outputs, particularly those with industrial application. Within the South African context these may include, but are not limited to, technological and non-technological exploitation of natural resources such as animals, plant biodiversity, micro-organisms and minerals to improve human health, address food security and subsequently contribute to economic growth and improved quality of life. The preference is that the fellow focus on one or more plants indigenous to South Africa and the production of valuable foods or nutraceuticals from this material.

Bed Load Velocity Meter System inventors Reinhardt Kotze; Andrew Sutherland

In the coarse particle transportation industry there are major challenges in pumping mineral suspensions due to water scarcity. As a result, more solids are transported and pipe blockages occur which cause major problems such as environmental spillages and economic losses (pipe replacement, wastage removal). The deposits of solid particles inside the pipe during pumping must be monitored to prevent pipe blockages. A bed-load velocity meter prototype system was developed to monitor particle velocities and solids around the inner pipe circumference. A market study (feasibility study) on the proposed technology was carried out and the overall outcome was very positive showing a need for this technology in South Africa. The technology may be customised to measure the fluid in the pipe and the customer needs. Benefits • Early warning of the presence of slow moving or stationary solids which informs operators to take corrective action and avoid pipe blockages. • Current pipelines are operated at velocities higher than absolutely necessary; the application of bed-load velocity allows the operator to set the velocity at an optimal value that is safer for operation.

inventor Gareth Holtman The biological sand filtration system is a simple, cost effective system used to improve the quality of winery wastewater for reuse (e.g. for beneficial irrigation). The system can operate entirely off-grid using solar panels and gravity for energy. Microbial communities within the system degrade the organic fraction of the winery wastewater and solubilisation of minerals in the sand reduce the potential sodicity of the wastewater. The pH of the influent wastewater can vary between being highly acidic with a typical pH of between 3 and 4 or alkaline. The system has been shown to neutralise the pH of the wastewater to a range of between 6.5 and 7.5 through both biotic and abiotic mechanisms. The system does not remove dissolved salts, but the intention is to utilise saline-tolerant plants downstream to remove salts.

Biological Sand Filtration System

Many wineries dispose of effluent directly to land via irrigation, but there is pressure for them to implement treatment systems. Biological sand filters treat winery wastewater through the natural interaction between sand and micro-organisms. After several years of researchthe technology has proven to be a viable solution for remediation of winery wastewater at small to medium-sized wineries in South Africa. With the increasing need to be more water savvy and environmentally friendly, this system is energy efficient, cost effective, and the treated water is safe for irrigation. Benefits • Easily installed and adapted to work with existing infrastructure • Modular approach which allows for the addition or subtraction of modules to suit the required treatment capacity • Requires minimal maintenance and skilled labour to operate • Reduces the organic load, neutralises and decreases the sodium absorption ratio of generally acidic winery effluent Offering The technology is currently at TRL 5. More funding and collaboration from industry is needed to increase the TRL and commercialise the technology.

The inverse Class-F power amplifier (PA) comprises an appropriately biased GaN active device, input matching network, output wave-shaping and matching network. The novel design of the wave-shaping and output matching network ensures minimal overlap of the drain voltage and current waveforms and also presents the appropriate impedances to the drain of the active device at the fundamental frequency of operation and harmonic frequencies thereof. In modern wireless communication systems, power amplifiers are one of the main consumers of DC power and the overall efficiency of existing radio frequency PAs are undesirably low. Innovative design techniques used in the design of the input matching network and the output wave-shaping and matching network resulted in a PA which provides an exceptionally high power conversion efficiency (PE).

Benefits • The innovative design provides higher power conversion efficiency, which ensures optimum conversion of DC input power to RF output power and hence a longer battery lifetime in battery operated systems. • The design minimizes the energy losses in the Inverse Class F PA circuit by ensuring that the active device is optimally loaded at the fundamental and harmonic frequencies. • The designed PA delivers a maximum PE of 95% at an operating frequency of 2.2 GHz. • A maximum output power of 40.6 dBm at an operating frequency of 2.2 GHz 9 Offering We are seeking either investors who would like to invest in a new spin-off company directed at manufacturing and supplying inverse Class-F power amplifiers or a licensee who would like to license and commercialise the product.

Rotatable Fish Drying Frame inventor Agrifood Technology Station (Larry Dolley)

The Rotatable Fish Drying Frame is aimed at formalising a specific fish-drying process already used by different communities in Africa. The frame allows for the drying of up to 100 kg of fresh fish at a time using the existing iteration. The key principle is that after one week of drying the drum containing the fish may easily be rotated 180o in a rural or coastal setting without mechanical or electrical assistance. At this point the drying process may run (2 weeks) to completion after removing the drying bin and the frame itself, the latter which can then be used for the next batch to be dried. The concept is best applied where there is an abundance of fish (whether primary or by-catch) but a lack of services and utilities. In an ideal situation, this drying process would take place in a basic venue or processing area prior to the dried fish being packed and stored. The low water activity and other ingredients used would then also contribute to the shelflife of the product for local consumption or export to a large African market. Benefits • The drying method itself is a proven one, both in terms of microbiological safety and shelf-life of dried product • It is easy to rotate and dry multiple batches of fish with no need for electricity and/or further mechanical assistance in remote 9 coastal or riverine areas 8 • It may be used in remote sites where access to market for the 7 sale of fresh fish is not easy • It may be used for drying by-catch species, which generally has a 6 low selling price or which is dumped 5 Offering We are seeking an investor who would like to invest in a new spin-off company or a licensee who would like to license and commercialise the product.

SlowRedT®

SlowRedT is an innovation of Cape Peninsula University of Technology that involves a modified release delivery system of Rooibos extract (Aspalathus linearis) to be used as a nutraceutical or dietary supplement that will deliver specific Rooibos polyphenolic constituents immediately as well as over an extended period. Rooibos herbal tea with its unique phenolic constituents has been well reported for its anti-oxidant potential and other bioactivities, which is associated with disease prevention and various health benefits. The key novelty of the technology is that it uses a controlled release matrix type mini-tablet in capsule system to deliver the recommended daily requirement of 6 cups of tea over a period of 24 hours. This requires an individual to consume one capsule twice-a-day.

TBT boasts a novel design and multi-functionality achieved by incorporating a magnetic detachable hinge and groove system which serves as the underlying principle of the innovation. The device can be split into two parts, affording the user the possibility to make use of the knife, fork, spatula and bottle opener on a 2-piece tool. When magnetically combined, the magnetic hinge and groove system mimics the action of a tensioned spring of a braai tong. The Cape Peninsula University of Technology – Adaptronics – Advanced Manufacturing technology laboratory (Adaptronics AMtl) was established in 2007. The primary objective of the unit is to specialize as a national manufacturing, research and educational resource centre for Adaptronic technologies in South Africa. Adaptronics is that technology that integrates sensor and actuator functions into materials, components and structures so that they may react to environment stimuli thus making them intelligent. Alignment with TIA objectives The units’ focus is on the development of human capital in scarce skills with a specific drive towards innovation,

Furthermore, the Adaptronics AMTL also engages industry Partners, regional and national government departments, other higher education institutions (hei’s), and national research facilities. Agrifood Technology Station

We offer a wide range of services that assist food and related companies in developing, enhancing and maintaining safe, efficient and cost-effective food production and processing technologies. We use the assistance of a host of highly qualified and experienced CPUT staff, including scientists, technologists and technical assistants to assist with delivering this service to companies. Where any specific expertise does not exist in the university, the academic and industrial networks of the station are also called in to assist on a consultancy basis. The following is a list of services that can be provided directly using the capacity of the

Innovation support opportunities

The mandate of the station is to assist small and medium food industry enterprises primarily, but also all other appropriate companies as a secondary goal, to improve their use of technology in innovative practices, implied improvement of efficiencies and also concomitant improved ability to employ more staff and empower such persons.

All companies, institutions and organisations in the field are invited to submit innovative proposals for researchable projects which they may wish to carry out together with the assistance of ATS. Where such projects are approved for further action, funding may be accessible via the Station.

This product has been approved by the RSA Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and has a number of approvals. Omega Canine emulsion has also been approved in Canada. The product comes in a squeeze-bottle, which makes dispensing of the emulsion onto food easy. The product has a smoky flavour and is liked by canines. Reports by owners claim that it improves the coat of the animals, becoming shinier and that animals are more active and show general improvement in their skin condition. As dogs are prone to iodine deficiency, the emulsion also contains iodide to supplement iodine stores. This product is unique in RSA and the world. Micro-nutrient supplement

The versatile micro-nutrient supplement developed at CPUT can be used in a variety of products such as biscuits, baby cereal, porridge etc. All the ingredients are bio-available and contains natural vitamin E, pro-vitamin A and other carotenes. Biscuits baked with this pre-mix were used in an intervention study on pre-school children attending informal crèches in Bethelsdorp, Eastern Cape. Consuming two biscuits per day, showed definite improvements in the health and nutritional status of these children. These benefits disappeared when the biscuits were no longer provided. This is indicated by the blood levels of carotenes and vitamin E during supplementation and the return to pre-intervention very low levels, three months after supplementation ended.

Circumfort is a specially designed male underwear developed to aid the healing process after circumcision. The underwear keeps the penis in an upright position, preventing downward and outward blood flow from the wound. Penile injuries associated with circumcision are usually the result of poor post wound care on the part of the patient. Effective wound care involves: (i) minimising vigorous movement of the penis; (ii) washing and cleaning the wound as prescribed by the doctor; and (iii) most importantly, keeping the penis in an elevated position. The use of Circumfort contributes to the aforementioned effective wound care by maintaining the penis in an elevated position after circumcision. In addition, this leads to less frequent checkups due to a decreased probability of the patient experiencing complications. The overall effect is better healing at a net lower cost. The invention is aimed at CubeSat developers that require very high data rate transmissions from space to Earth. The XTX operates at a data rate between 3 Mbps and 50 Mbps making it versatile for a range of applications. The AIS Receiver is a compact Software Defined Radio (SDR) designed for CubeSat missions. It is compatible with the CubeSat standard and has a CubeSat Kit PC/104 form factor. The multichannel receiver operates in the maritime VHF band and can be used to receive AIS and LRAIS data. Spectrum can also be sampled as raw data. South Africa does not possess a satellite based AIS receiver. The SDR will enable data to be provided a more economical rate when compared to purchasing data from international service providers. The SDR as its name suggests is software defined which allows it to be reconfigured for future applications such as for the VDES application which is likely to replace AIS in the future. The current hardware already supports the VDES reception implementation. The receiver is forward-compatible with the VHF Data Exchange System (VDES). CMC – CubeSat UHF/VHF Transceiver inventor Africa Space Innovation Centre

The UHF/VHF transceiver is a compact telemetry and command radio designed for CubeSat missions. It is compatible with the CubeSat standard, with a CubeSat Kit PC/104 form factor. The transceiver implements GMSK and AFSK modulation schemes with data rates of 9600 and 1200 baud respectively. The precursor to this transceiver was part of the ZACUBE-1 mission, South Africa’s first launched CubeSat. The transceivers implement full-duplex GMSK uplink and downlink communications. A combination of AFSK and GMSK provides fullduplex communications with data rates of 1200 and 9600 bps respectively. The AFSK does not operate in full-duplex mode exclusively. The CMC transmits frequencies in the amateur and commercial bands respectively. Benefits • The transceiver is ideal for missions where a low data-rate downlink/uplink is required. The transceiver can also be used as a robust lower data-rate back-up radio for a higher data-rate radio.
