Peer Educators Reflecting and Recharging For Semester 2!

Every year, Peer Educators receive training at the start of the year, followed by a July refresher training to prepare for the second semester.

On Saturday, July 26th, 2025, Peer Educators from Wellington, District Six, Bellville, and Mowbray gathered at the PoolHouse, in Bellville Campus for a refresher training hosted by the HIV/AIDS Unit. The session allowed them to reflect on first-semester efforts and strategize for a stronger second half of the year.

The day opened with an introduction by the Peer Education Officer, Ms Nonhlanhla Ndabeni, who reviewed the agenda, responsibilities, and areas for improvement. Two Peer Educators from each campus then presented reflections on their activities including condom distribution, group discussions, FTF Campaign involvement, and other initiatives. They shared both achievements and challenges, as well as plans for Semester 2.

The presentations inspired new ideas, motivation, and potential inter-campus collaborations. Following feedback from Ms. Ndabeni, Peer Educators participated in an individual reflection session to share their personal experiences in the program so far.

After lunch, Lusanda Naki, the HIV/AIDS Unit Counsellor, serenaded the Peer Educators and they joined right in. After that beautiful moment, she praised the Peer Educators for their work during the First Things First campaign in Semester 1. She also urged them to be more present during residence visits to encourage students to get tested for HIV, emphasizing that students often relate better to their peers, which makes the Peer Educators' involvement crucial.

Former award-winning Peer Educator, Lerato Patience Segonote offered advice on maintaining individuality, initiative, and dedication within the program. PR intern, Tandile Ndoyisile encouraged the Peer Educators to actively engage with the Unit’s social media pages, highlighting how this helps build awareness. She also motivated them to contribute to content creation, particularly educational posts.

To wrap up the training, Miss Ndabeni reminded the Peer Educators of the upcoming Peer Educators’ awards, leaving the Peer Educators motivated and excited for the semester ahead.

We cannot wait to see what the 2026 Peer Educators get up to, but we are sure that whatever it is, it will be impactful!

Amajitas and EmpowHer Mentor-Mentee Meet & Greet

On the 28th of July, 2025, the Division of Student Affairs, in partnership with Human Capital and HERS-SA, hosted the Amajitas and EmpowHer Mentor-Mentee Meet & Greet at the Bellville Campus Poolhouse.

Programme Director Dr Soraya Beukes opened the event with warm and uplifting energy, creating a welcoming and comfortable space for both mentors and mentees to connect.

The event brought together selected mentees and trained staff mentors to officially begin their mentorship journey. Overviews of the Amajita Men’s Programme and EmpowHer Programme were presented by Mr Tumiso Mfisa and Ms Melani-Ann Hara. They highlighted their shared mission to empower young men and women to rise above harmful societal pressures, build confidence, and make responsible, positive life choices.

Dr. Melanie Swanson shared words of encouragement to both the mentors and mentees. She highlighted that the Amajitas and EmpowHer mentorship programme is more than just a programme, it’s a meaningful relationship that is meant to be built over time, based on trust, consistency, accountability, and personal growth. Then, Dr Jean Hazlitt led an engaging discussion on the meaning and value of mentorship, providing space for open reflection and honest conversation.

The highlight of the day was the one-on-one engagement session, where mentors and mentees connected personally.

Conversations flowed naturally, laughter filled the space, and bonds slowly began to form, a clear sign of the exciting journey ahead.

The Meet & Greet was more than just an introduction, it marked the beginning of relationships that would inspire growth, leadership, and positive change in the months to come.

Student Leadership Development Webinar Series

In 2025, a dynamic series of student development webinars successfully engaged close to 700 students, reflecting a strong commitment to holistic student growth and leadership development. The series was designed to address key challenges facing students while equipping them with practical skills to thrive academically, socially, and personally.

The first webinar, Time Management & Managing Priorities as Student Leaders, presented by Student Counselling Department, provided students with effective tools and strategies to balance academic responsibilities, leadership roles, and personal commitments. Participants gained valuable insights into goal setting, productivity techniques, and maintaining well-being under pressure.

The second session, Empowering Voices: Strategies for Student Leaders to Reduce gender-based violence on Campus, presented by Higher Health, created a critical platform for dialogue on genderbased violence. It empowered student leaders with knowledge, advocacy skills, and actionable approaches to foster safer campus environments, promote awareness, and support affected individuals.

In the third webinar, Smart Money Moves: A Budgeting Blueprint – Owning Your Financial Future, presented by Nedbank, students were introduced to practical financial literacy skills. The session emphasized budgeting, responsible spending, saving strategies, and long-term financial planning, enabling students to make informed financial decisions during and beyond their university journey.

In The final webinar, Dialogue on the G20 Summit, presented by Government Communication and Information Systems broadened students’ global awareness by unpacking key issues discussed at the international level. It encouraged critical thinking, active citizenship, and meaningful engagement with global socio-economic and political developments.

Collectively, the webinar series not only enhanced student competencies but also fostered a culture of leadership, responsibility, and informed participation. The strong turnout underscored the relevance and impact of these initiatives in preparing students to navigate both campus life and the broader world with confidence and purpose. We are looking forward to the next set of Webinar Series in 2026.

Students Step Up To Prioritise Their Health, Once Again!

The HIV/AIDS Unit, together with partners, brought back the "First Things First" (FTF) campaign for the second semester, from August 4 till 25 September 2025.

The FTF campaign, which is part of Higher Health’s initiatives, continued to focus on helping students stay healthy by offering essential health services across CPUT campuses.

Building on the success of the first semester, the health screening team revisited several CPUT campuses, including Bellville, District 6, Wellington, Mowbray, Granger Bay, and Tygerberg and selected student residences.

Also, this time around, the campaign came with a surprise (see pg. 28).

The team continued to offer services like HIV testing, blood pressure checks, blood glucose testing, and screening for sexually transmitted infections(STIs).Contraceptives and condoms were also distributed to encourage safer sexual practices among students. This helped create a lasting message about the importance of taking care of one’s health.

A big thank you to our health screening team and our partners (namely TB/HIV Care, Norsa, Desmond Tutu, and WCDOH) for your unwavering dedication to the First Things First campaign. Your efforts in testing and supporting students have made a real impact on campus health. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the Peer Educators for their amazing work in promoting the campaign and assisting throughout.

Donation Drive For Mandela Day

Let’s Out-Donate, Out-Give, and Outshine! was the theme for the Division Of Student Affairs’ month-long Food and Sanitary Dignity Drive of non-perishable food and sanitary items to support students in need, as part of the Mandela Month celebration.

The DSA departments who took part in this drive included Student Counselling, HIV/AIDS Unit, Campus Health, Disability Unit, and other designated offices.

Over the month of July, both staff and students from all CPUT Campuses came together for this cause and donated for the students in need. It was truly a beautiful sight to see.

On the 18th of July, the DSA hosted epic donation drive events at both D6 and Bellville campus. These events created a space for even more individuals to step forward and give, turning the day into a celebration of kindness, community, and collective action.This day was not only a day to accept more donations but to bring smiles to the faces of staff and students.

At Bellville, DSA provided the students with some popcorn and coffee to warm them up.

Whereas at District 6 Campus, DSA collaborated with the Biotechnology and Consumer Sciences Department to provide soup and steamed bread for the students and that made them to be very happy.

After having received donations on the day, the DSA team combined all the donations and started to pack them in 67 minutes. Some of the donated items included rice, pasta, noodles, dried lentils & beans, samp, oats, maize meal, breakfast cereals/porridge, spreads, canned goods, soup mixes, oil, spices, tomato paste, toothpaste & toothbrushes, sanitary pads, body lotion, and other essentials. The bags were packed equally and in such a way that they included all the necessary essentials. This Mandela day donation drive was indeed a success.

In the words of the late Nelson Mandela; “A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of.”

Civic Education & Soft Skills Support Session With Higher Health Equipping Peer Educators to lead with purpose and influence

Higher Health hosted a successful three-day Civic Education & Soft Skills support session at Bellville campus, IT Centre, bringing together Peer Educators from Wellington, Bellville, Mowbray & District 6 campuses.

During the 3-day sessions, the Peer Educators got acquainted with the Higher Health representatives, Super users and also with each other. Beyond the formal learning, the sessions were brought to life through fun, interactive activities such as dancing, sketches, and singing.

These activities were not only part of the course but also played a key role in boosting confidence, creativity, and team spirit, making the experience both enriching and memorable.

Congratulations to all the Peer Educators who completed their modules! You are now better equipped with essential life and soft skills such as emotional intelligence, empathy and civic responsibility, conflict resolution, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving, decision making, digital literacy, presentation skills, public speaking and communication, resilience, Confidence and Self-Motivation, Teamwork, organizational skills and leadership skills , timemanagement and goal-setting.

These competencies will not only enhance their effectiveness in their roles as Peer Educators, but will also equip them to thrive personally, academically and professionally. By investing in these soft skills, they are better prepared to contribute meaningfully to their campus communities and confidently step into future workplace and leadership opportunities.

About the Curriculum It is a self-paced online programme. NQF Level 5 credit bearing skills programme.30 credits. There are 6 modules; Civic education and peer education, Genderbased violence and sexual and gender diversity & oppose gender-based violence and respect sexual and gender diversity, Mental Health, Disability, Communicable diseases, and alcohol and substance abuse.

Peer Educator Reflections on the Civic Education & Soft Skills Session My name is Lebu Banda, and I am a Peer Educator from Bellville Campus.

The Support Session in Bellville was a truly empowering experience for me. The session helped me understand the importance of civic responsibility, leadership, and effective communication in both my academic and personal life. I gained valuable soft skills such as teamwork, confidence, and problem-solving, which I continue to apply in different spaces. It was also inspiring to connect with other young people who are passionate about growth and making a positive impact. I am grateful for the opportunity and the knowledge I gained from the experience.

My name is Mandima Kallie and I am Wellington Peer Educator.

The Higher Health Civic Education & Soft Skills Support session was a great experience for me. By then, we had already built connections as Peer Educators, which made it easier to feel comfortable and work together.Although the training involved a lot of work, it felt manageable because we were mostly reflecting on our first semester experiences and what we had learned. The best part for me was the friendships we built, as it gave us time to connect and grow closer.

My name is Sibabalwe Baleni, a Peer educator from Wellington campus.

Being part of the Higher Health Civic & Soft Skills Support session was a really uplifting experience in my journey as a Peer Educator. It gave us the opportunity to not only learn more about the important topics we teach our peers about, but also to get tested ourselves. This made the experience more meaningful because we were able to practise what we encourage others to do. Because of the session, we now feel more confident and better prepared to educate and guide our peers moving forward. It was a great reminder that as Peer Educators, it is important for us to lead by example and continue learning as well.

My name is Jennifer Motsoeneng and I am Bellville Peer Educator.

Attending the Higher Health Civic Education & Soft Skills Support Session was a truly eye-opening experience for me. I gained important emotional, social, and communication skills that strengthened my confidence as a Peer Educator, especially when supporting students with mental health challenges. Connecting and learning from my peers made it even more valuable, and I left knowing that these soft skills are key to growing, leading, and thriving in both university and future careers.

Celebrating Excellence: 2025 Peer Educators’ Awards

The HIV/AIDS Unit hosted the annual Peer Educators’ Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, 14 October 2025 at the Granger Bay Hotel school.

The theme of the awards was “Masquerade Ball” and it was truly a night of mystery and glam from start to finish!

Nthabiseng Maake and Tandile Ndoyisile, both interns of the Unit, were the MCs of the awards.

They stepped into their roles as the evening's hosts with enthusiasm and set the tone for an unforgettable evening, making sure that all guests had a fantastic time and felt the magic of the evening.

This special event honored the dedication and efforts of the 2025 Peer Educators, highlighting their valuable contributions to the HIV/AIDS Unit's programs throughout the year. It was a celebration of their commitment, hard work, and impact on the community.

They fully committed themselves to the program, ensuring that every campus and residence was stocked with new condoms, leading discussions on important issues affecting students, launching their own initiatives, and keeping students informed about the Unit’s activities. They also supported the FTF health screening campaign, assisted at events, and overall maintained a strong presence across campus, so much so that every student came to recognize them as “Team Blue.”

Guests were in for a treat as Adwell Mahlangu, a senior peer educator, took the stage and had everyone on their feet with his energetic performance, creating a memorable night for all.

During the ceremony, each Peer Educator received a participation certificate from CPUT SEDTU and a Higher Health Certificate of Recognition for completing their training as Peer Educators. Some Peer Educators were recognized with special awards in the following categories (which were presented by the HIV/AIDS Unit Head of Department, Dr Melanie Swanson; Nonhlanhla Ndabeni, Peer Education program officer; and other esteemed guests.)

EMPOWHER AND AMAJITAS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

During the First Things First health screening campaign, the Division Of Student Affairs decided that it was the perfect opportunity to do the EmpowHer and Amajitas program Awareness campaign. The purpose of this campaign was to make students aware about these two programs available on Campus.

The awareness campaign took place on dedicated days at each campus and residence as part of the FTF campaign. The campuses visited included Bellville, Wellington, District 6, Granger Bay, and Mowbray, while the residences reached were RISE, Catsville, MGR 1 & 2, South Point, and House Navarre.

The HIV/AIDS Unit interns, Tandile Ndoyisile (PR intern) and Athi Samte (Marketing intern) were the ones at the forefront of this campaign. They ensured that the campaign ran smoothly. They created informative brochures, designed QR codes for program sign-ups, and managed social media content, ensuring that the campaign message was communicated effectively both in person and online.

The Unit’s Peer Educators were also very helpful in assisting with this campaign. They assisted with setting up the informational stall and ensured that the pull up banners and feathers are put up and well displayed at each campus or residence the team went to, so that they can be clearly seen by the students. They also confidently and enthusiastically engaged with students and shared what these two programs are all about.

The response to this awareness campaign was incredible, with many students showing interest in joining these programs. Over 200 Students joined these two programs during the campaign. This proved that the campaign was a success.

A huge thank you to the HIV/AIDS Unit staff and Peer Educators for your dedication and commitment to the EmpowHer and Amajitas program awareness campaign.

With these two programs, we look forward to seeing young women and men grow in confidence, find their voices, and step into leadership roles, inspiring change across campus. There are some activities lined up for both EmpowHer and Amajitas program, so watch out for them.

Being part of the Amajitas Mentorship Programme was a meaningful experience for me. It gave me the opportunity to grow not only academically, but also personally and professionally. Through the mentorship sessions, I gained valuable insight, guidance, and confidence in my abilities. It was motivating to engage with mentors and peers who are driven and supportive, and the experience has encouraged me to be more intentional about my goals and the impact I want to make. I’m truly grateful to have been part of the programme.

WORLD AIDS DAY 2025

On 1 December 2025, the Unit’s Health Screening Team visited the Haven Night Shelter in Wynberg to mark World AIDS Day. The visit focused on raising awareness about HIV and AIDS, encouraging people to know their status, and offering free health screenings to members of the community.

The day began with a meaningful talk by Sr. Gabaake, the Unit’s Professional Nurse, who spoke about the importance of testing and taking care of one’s health. She also explained the U=U message, which highlights that people living with HIV who are on treatment and have an undetectable viral load cannot pass the virus on to their partners. Ms Ndabeni, the Peer Education program oficer then spoke to the residents about the connection between substance abuse and HIV. Mrs Naki, the Unit’s HIV Counsellor, concluded the session by leading a touching Red Ribbon candle-lighting ceremony in remembrance of those affected by HIV and AIDS. Throughout the day, the team provided a range of health screenings, including HIV testing, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, and screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Before leaving, the team distributed dignity packs ( inclusive of toiletries and other hygiene essentials) to the shelter residents, who warmly welcomed and appreciated the support.

The Haven Night Shelter continues to be a place of care and hope for people experiencing homelessness in Cape Town. The visit was a reminder that everyone deserves access to health services and support. Knowing your status is an important step towards protecting your health.

“MY JOURNEY AS A BIA INTERN” Asisipo Dwani’s Work-Integrated Learning Experience at CPUT’s HIV/AIDS Unit

As a final-year Business and Information Administration student completing my WorkIntegrated Learning (WIL) placement, my time at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s HIV/AIDS Unit has been a formative and highly enriching experience. The placement offered me the opportunity to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world environment while contributing to a unit that plays a critical role in student wellness and health education.

From the moment I joined the unit, I was welcomed by a team that works with passion, dedication, and compassion. I quickly learned that the HIV/AIDS Unit is more than just an office. it is a support system for students and staff, a safe space, and a vital source of education and prevention initiatives across campus.

My journey at the HIV/AIDS Unit has significantly contributed to my professional development. I leave the placement with strengthened skills, a deeper appreciation and commitment to excellence as I move forward in my career.

Peer Educators Discussion Groups

Lulama Hlongwe talks about Peer ED Discussions I am Lulama Hlongwe, a CPUT Peer Educator.

Reflecting on the second semester of 2025, I can confidently say that I gained a lot of knowledge compared to the beginning of the year. The semester provided many opportunities for growth through the different responsibilities we had as peer educators.

During this time, we participated in campus meetings and residence discussions where we worked together to identify important topics affecting students. These discussions allowed us to engage directly with students in different residences and create safe spaces where they could openly share their thoughts, experiences, and concerns.

Through these engagements, I learned more about important social and health issues such as LGBTQI+ matters, substance abuse, sexual health, and gender-based violence (GBV). These conversations helped me better understand the challenges students face and the importance of educating and supporting one another within the campus community.

Although the semester was short and the schedule was tight, it was still a very meaningful experience.

I also had the opportunity to be part of the “First Things First” Campaign, which allowed me to further contribute to promoting health awareness among students. Being involved in this campaign added to my growth and strengthened my experience as a peer educator.

Overall, the second semester helped me develop better communication skills, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the role peer educators play in supporting and empowering students on campus.

ADDRESSING GENDER BASED VIOLENCE MYTHS Some of the myths associated with gender-based violence (GBV) include: Victims of GBV provoke the abuse through their inappropriate behaviour.

Most women are abused by strangers.

Women are safe when they are home.

GBV happens only to poor and marginalised women.

GBV is not common in industrialised countries.

Men cannot control themselves, violence is simply a part of their nature.

Regarding each of the above: 1: Blaming the victim has the potential to cause more harm to a survivor of violence.

2: Most women who experience GBV are abused by people they know; often the perpetrators are those they trust and love.

3: GBV happens among people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and genders.

“PEER EDUCATION PROGRAM REFLECTION”

By Mmamohau Mosekedi, Junior Peer Educator Stepping into my role as a Junior Peer Educator last year was one of the most defining parts of my growth on campus.

Taking on leadership responsibilities as a junior gave me the space to challenge myself, support others, and contribute to creating a healthier and more connected student community.

One of the highlights of my year was initiating the “Free Hug” Campaign. What started as a simple idea to spread kindness turned into a powerful movement that brought students together, helped break social barriers, and reminded our campus of the importance of connection and emotional support. Seeing people open up, smile, and feel seen because of something I helped create was one of the most meaningful moments of my Peer Ed journey.

Throughout the year, I took part in several peer education activities, conversations, and campaign, each one teaching me something new. I learned how to communicate with empathy, how to lead with confidence, and how to create spaces where people feel safe to express themselves. I also faced challenges, especially balancing responsibility with schoolwork and pushing myself to speak up even when it felt intimidating. But every challenge helped me grow into a stronger leader and a more grounded version of myself. My efforts were honored at the end of the year when I received two awards: Campus Leader of the Year and Most Discussions of the Year. These awards weren’t just achievements, they were reminders of the impact we can have when we show up consistently, lead with purpose, and care about the people around us.

Overall, being a Junior Peer Educator shaped me both personally and as a leader. It taught me that small actions matter, voices matter, and community matters. I’m grateful for the experiences, the lessons, and the chance to make a difference.

Lastly, a big shout out to ama Bellville amahle, they are my people, and I could not have done this journey without them.

I appreciate each and every one of them.

“PEER EDUCATION PROGRAM REFLECTION”

By Anga-Anda Mahlukane, Senior Peer Educator I remember my first day at the Pool House very clearly.

People were laughing, engaging in ice-breakers, and connecting with one another. Meanwhile, I felt shy and tried to make myself “invisible.” I didn’t socialise or speak much because every word felt heavy, like climbing a mountain. I spent most of my time wondering how I would ever find the confidence to get through discussions.

Over time, things began to change. I started to accept myself and slowly express who I truly am. My nerves and anxiety didn’t disappear, but they shifted. They were no longer something holding me back. Instead, they became a kind of energy, a reminder that I cared about the people around me. By the end of my Junior Peer Educator year, I was no longer just reciting facts about mental and sexual health; I was actively creating and sharing safe spaces with others.

Stepping into my role as a Senior Peer Educator, my focus shifted completely. I no longer thought about myself as much, but about the juniors who reminded me of who I used to be. I found myself offering guidance and support naturally, without overthinking it. In many ways, I was simply being the kind of friend I once needed. I may not fully know the impact I had on their journey, but I hope that I made a difference in some way.

One of my biggest highlights is the Junior Peer Educators I met through the programme. They were hardworking, passionate individuals, and it was an incredible journey walking alongside them. I truly believe they have amazing things ahead of them.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone in the Unit for giving me this opportunity. It has been a meaningful and life-changing experience, again Dankie.

Introducing the Student Engagement, Development & Training Unit (SEDTU) Expanding support for student wellness, leadership, and development at CPUT

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology is pleased to announce that the HIV/AIDS Unit has been renamed the Student Engagement, Development & Training Unit (SEDTU), reflecting its expanded focus on student wellness, engagement, leadership development, and capacity building across all CPUT campuses.

SEDTU works closely with partners such as Higher Health, the Western Cape Department of Health, and various non-profit organisations to support impactful programmes that address issues affecting students, including HIV and AIDS, genderbased violence, and substance abuse, while promoting holistic wellbeing and student success.
