TITLE: PHYSICO-CHEMICAL, TECHNO-FUNCTIONAL AND STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES OF NATIVE AND GLYCATED PROTEINS ISOLATED FROM BLACK SOLDIER FLY (HERMETIA ILLUCENS) LARVAE An urgent need exists to identify and exploit sustainable sources of protein to attain the World Health Organization’s goal of Zero Hunger. Black soldier fly larval (BSFL) protein offers a solution to this end, and this study indeed contributed invaluable information of aspects of the native protein and also the techno-functional properties of glycated proteins. Of special significance was the superior essential amino acid content of native BSFL protein fractions compared to eggs and milk, while glycated BSFL proteins demonstrated significant solubility at low pH and high emulsion capacity and stability. The results confirmed the enormous potential of these novel proteins as food ingredients for the future.

TITLE: PHENOLOGICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES TO ABIOTIC PARAMETERS IN RARE POTATO CULTIVARS (SOLANUM TUBEROSUM L.) This study reports on rare, pigmented potatoes and their cultivation in South Africa as an alternative nutrient dense food source. The impact of abiotic parameters on growth and chemical compositions in seed minitubers of four pigmented cultivars were assessed. Potato cultivar Salad blue seemed to be a drought tolerant crop with the ability to produce reasonable yields under severe environmental conditions. This study provides useful information for future oncological studies and for human nutrition. The output includes three journal articles and the very first PhD to be awarded from the Department of Horticultural Sciences at CPUT.

TITLE: SPECTROSCOPIC AND CHROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF NEVIRAPINE, LAMIVUDINE, AND ZIDOVUDINE ANTI-RETROVIRAL COMPOUNDS IN WASTEWATER SAMPLES FROM SELECTED WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS, CAPE TOWN The occurrence of antiviral compounds has been reported in wastewater, surface and groundwater, globally. This poses a health risk to human health and the aquatic environment as a whole, and this neccesitates its removal. Several analytical methods including adsorption, oxidation, biological processes, and membrane separation were applied to remove these pollutants. Olabode developed, optimised and applied improved advanced oxidation processes that included sunlight, chlorination and permanganate treatment for the elimination of three anti-retroviral compounds from wastewater samples to improve the quality of wastewater that is released into the aquatic ecosystem. The three compounds were nevirapine, lamivudine and zidovudine.

TITLE: MECHANISM OF ENANTIOMERIC RESOLUTION This study focused on the chiral resolution of selected racemic acids using the Cinchona alkaloids. The method of diastereomeric salt formation was employed. The chiral discrimination process was investigated by analysing the resultant 14 crystal structures of the diastereomeric salts. The dominant non-bonded interactions and crystal packing features that could contribute towards the crystallization of one diastereomeric salt over another were studied. The importance of the solvent on the chiral discrimination process was also highlighted. In the majority of crystal structures, water was incorporated, followed by methanol. This showed the propensity of polar solvents in stabilising crystal structures.

DOCTOR OF COMMERCE IN INTERNAL AUDITING HENRY MUKONO MCom Accounting; Certified Public Accountant (CPAZ); BCom Accounting (Hons); BSc (Special Hons) in Monitoring & Evaluation; Dip Accounting

SUPERVISOR Prof Jobo Dubihlela

TITLE: THE ROLE OF INTERNAL AUDITING ON PERFORMANCE OF STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES (SOEs) IN ZIMBABWE: A CORPORATE GOVERNANCE FRAMEWORK Henry’s thesis focused on internal auditing effectiveness (IAE), corporate governance (CG) miscellany and organisational performance (OP) of SOEs; by examining the critical components of IA, CG and performance of SOEs in Zimbabwe. The study advances our understanding of the complexities of public sector accountability. It also confirmed IA as the cornerstone of CG, operational efficiency and assurance. The study illuminated the inimitability of IA and the centrality of good CG in averting financial scandals, fraudulent, irregular and wasteful expenditures. The thesis presents a timely contribution to internal auditing research, validating the significance of IA and good CG in alleviating inefficiencies and imposing fiscal discipline. It is a response to a clarion call for SOEs to adopt a CG model that will be usable effectual within public sector settings. To this end, an IA-P-CG framework capturing IA and CG components is proposed, particularly in the contextualised environment. Henry has published an article in the accredited Accounting and Financial Studies Journal. Two of his manuscripts have been submitted for possible publication in accredited international journals. His work has also been accepted for presentation at a Scopus listed 12th Global Conference on Business and Social Sciences (GCBSS), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

TITLE: TOWARDS A FRAMEWORK OF IMPROVING THE EFFICACY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BA CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH AND MULTILINGUAL STUDIES IN PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE WORKPLACE Ms Tlowane’s ethnographic action research on a bilingual programme signals a deliberate foreswearing of voice and agency through the subjective nature of her interpretation. She interrogated the educational practices and how they unfold at workplaces. The study rejects the traditional assumptions and its preoccupations with a scientific/ reductionist tendency of facts and figures. It focuses on a hermeneutic description as a response phenomenon which underscores the urgency to view the workplace linguistic challenges in interrelated terms within a constructivist epistemology. She has published three articles in peer-reviewed journals and is deconstructing the thesis into a book, as recommended by examiners, for wider readership.

TITLE: FOUNDATION PHASE TEACHERS’ PHILOSOPHIES ON LITERACY TEACHING AND LEARNING IN RURAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY OF FIVE RURAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN THE WESTERN CAPE GEORGE DISTRICT This qualitative case study was motivated by the continuing decline in the performance of rural schools’ Foundation Phase learners in national and international tests of literacy. Of criticality was to understand the connection between teachers’ individually-held philosophies and teaching practices in the classroom. The nature of these individual philosophies may substantially affect the efficacy of the tuition in literacy conducted in the classroom. The analysis revealed a range of understandings of what literacy teaching entails; from a highly behaviourist stance, to a more constructivist stance. Congruent with these understandings, observed teaching varied from dull and unintegrated drill work in class, to imaginative and engaging education that drew upon the inner resources of learners’ own knowledge. The research produced a model that teachers can use to critically reflect on how they teach so that they can respond appropriately to their unique situations.

TITLE: SYNTHESIS OF FLY ASH-BASED ZEOLITES FOR USE AS CATALYSTS IN THE TRANSESTERIFICATION OF WASTE-DERIVED MAGGOT OIL FOR BIODIESEL PRODUCTION Waste fly ash was converted into highly active, heterogeneous hydroxysodalite zeolite catalysts, which were used to trans-esterify waste-derived maggot oil, resulting in high yields of quality compliant biodiesel. The novel process demonstrated the potential to reduce material costs, energy consumption and water usage associated with conventional biodiesel production technologies. The study shows how to reuse waste beneficially, and simultaneously mitigate the impact of conventional biodiesel production on food and land security. Outputs from Juvet’s PhD research include one peer-reviewed article in a DHET-accredited journal, one peer-reviewed book chapter, and three international conference presentations.

TITLE: THE ORAL MICROBIOME AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH CHRONIC AND SYSTEMIC DISEASE IN A SOUTH AFRICAN POPULATION The study aimed to investigate and characterise the oral microbiota of a South African population, using 16s rDNA analysis, in combination with Next-generation sequences in individuals who smoked, are diabetic, and who had metabolic syndrome (MetS). It is believed that any disruption in the oral microbiota can initiate inflammatory responses, leading to severe forms of oral disease which may progress into systemic diseases. However, the exact mechanism is still under investigation as the relationships between these diseases are limited. This study found that the genera Bacteroidetes were significantly more enriched in individuals with diabetes mellites (DM). Furthermore, in the smoking group, the oral microbiota was significantly enriched with gram-negative anaerobes. When comparing subjects with MetS and without MetS, a significant increase in gram-positive aerobic and anaerobic microbiota was observed in those with MetS. This study is unique as it is the first study to look at the relationship between the human microbiota and health in this population.

The study identified several DMRs and functional pathways affected in subjects with diabetes and prediabetes. Furthermore, DNA methylation patterns were associated with certain cardiometabolic traits and diabetic complications, and could be used as potential biomarkers for the occurrence and progression of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The expression of several DMRs and novel lncRNA-associated DNA methylation regions observed in metformin-treated diabetics may be potential targets for therapeutic monitoring in patients with diabetes.
