CPUT REMEMBRANCE DAY 2025
1
FOREWORD On 18 November 2024, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) gathered for the first time in a solemn and unified act of remembrance. It was a moment of deep reflection, as we honoured and celebrated the lives of students, staff members, committee members and alumni who passed away during 2023 and 2024. This First Remembrance Day marked not just a ceremony, but the beginning of a tradition—one grounded in compassion, respect, and the enduring values of Ubunye (oneness) and Ubuntu (humanity). As a University, we thrive because of the people who breathe life into our mission, through teaching, learning, service, and shared vision. The names in this booklet represent more than roles held or faculties/departments served. Each name tells a story of purpose, potential, ambition and service. Whether staff member or student, they shaped CPUT in ways seen and unseen, and their absence is felt across every corridor, classroom, lab, and office. They were part of our shared story, and as we celebrate 20 years of CPUT, we acknowledge that their legacies continue to shape our future.
PROF CHRIS NHLAPO
To the families, friends, and colleagues of the departed, we extend our heartfelt condolences. While their earthly journeys have ended, their memory and valuable contribution lives on in the corridors of our beautiful University.
Vice-Chancellor This booklet is a tribute, a space where names are remembered, and legacies honoured. It serves as both a record and a reminder: that even in loss, we are united. United in mourning, but also in gratitude for the time we shared with those who are no longer with us. May we continue to hold them in our hearts, and may their contributions inspire us to live with greater empathy, purpose, and care.

Message from the Chairperson of the Dome of Remembrance Committee In 2024, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology held its first-ever Remembrance Day. a historic and deeply moving occasion that marked the beginning of an enduring tradition. Through the unveiling of the Dome of Remembrance, we created a sacred space for memory and reflection, where lives are honoured, stories are preserved, and loss is acknowledged with dignity and grace.
especially as we mark 20 years since the founding of CPUT in 2025. This anniversary is not only a celebration of our growth and resilience, but a moment to acknowledge the many lives that have helped shape this institution, some of whom are no longer with us. In remembering them, we uphold the values of compassion, respect, and community that lie at the heart of our university.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to the success of the 2024 event—from the members of the Dome of Remembrance Committee, the event organisers, the performers of the day, the programme director, the SRC, the Chaperon of Council, to the union representatives who provided messages of support. Your collective efforts made the inaugural ceremony a powerful and meaningful experience for all involved.
In this booklet, we have listed additional names of those we have lost since our inaugural Remembrance Day. As a committee, we may have unintentionally missed one or two of our departed graduates, students, staff, or committee members, and for that, I sincerely ask for your understanding. Should you notice a name we have overlooked, I invite the entire CPUT community, including our stakeholders and friends, to make us aware by completing the form on page 34 and returning it to the committee. This will help us ensure that all who have contributed to CPUT’s legacy are appropriately remembered.
On that day, we immortalised the names of 58 individuals: 29 staff members and 29 students who passed away in 2023 and 2024. Each name, now engraved in the Dome, serves as a permanent tribute to their presence in our university community. These were colleagues, mentors, friends, leaders, and young dreamers whose absence is deeply felt, but whose legacy continues to resonate in the spaces they once occupied. As Chairperson of the Dome of Remembrance Committee, it is my honour to reflect on the significance of this initiative,

DOME OF REMEMBRANCE The Dome of Remembrance at CPUT is a solemn and symbolic structure located at the Bellville campus. It serves as a tribute to the university’s esteemed alumni, staff, students, Council members, honorary doctorate recipients and cherished friends who have passed away. It stands as a central and symbolic feature of the University, inviting reflection and remembrance for all who visit. The Dome of Remembrance honours the exceptional contributions of individuals who have advanced CPUT’s mission and vision. It stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence and the betterment of the University. The dome is a space where the CPUT
community can reflect on the lives and legacies of those who have departed, celebrating their achievements and the impact they had on the University and beyond. The Dome of Remembrance hosts annual ceremonies to honour those who departed. In November 2024, a ceremony was held to remember colleagues and students who passed away in 2023 and 2024. During this moving event, the names of the departed were digitally displayed inside the dome, and candles were lit in their honour. The ceremony provided an opportunity for the CPUT community to come together, reflect on the contributions of their late colleagues and students, and celebrate their lives.

IMMORTALISATIONS In Memory of Prof Mellet Moll 1967 – 2024 Prof Mellet Moll served CPUT with distinction, dedication, and deep humanity. A visionary academic, engineer, and poet, he was appointed Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment in 2017, after joining CPUT as Deputy Dean in 2012. His leadership was instrumental in launching CPUT’s groundbreaking space programme, developing nanosatellites to monitor South Africa’s coastline under Operation Phakisa. He also served as the founding chair of the South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC), cementing his commitment to innovation and sustainability. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Prof. Moll led the university’s Business Continuity and COVID-19 response, establishing one of the sector’s most effective vaccination initiatives, which served thousands in the surrounding community. Prof. Moll passed away suddenly from a heart attack at his home in Somerset West. At the time of his passing, he had just been appointed Director of CPUT Business Continuity at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Moll’s legacy lives on in the systems he built, the students he inspired, and the ideals he embodied. He will be remembered with great respect and deep gratitude.

At the time of his passing, he was completing a Master of Commerce in Management, demonstrating his relentless commitment to education and professional excellence. Professionally, Mpendulo held key roles at Absa Group for over seven years, including Investment Manager and Risk Advisor positions, and earlier at First National Bank as a Private Banker and Branch Sales Consultant. He was respected for his expertise in business development, stakeholder engagement, and risk management. At CPUT, Mpendulo was also an active student leader on the Student Representative Council, exemplifying the balance between academic achievement and leadership. He was known for his integrity, warmth, and dedication to uplifting others. CPUT Remembers Prof Malusi Marcus Balintulo The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) solemnly remembers the late Prof. Malusi Marcus Balintulo, who passed away on 22 December 2020 after a short illness. A distinguished sociologist, academic leader, and champion of higher education transformation, Prof. Balintulo was the last Rector of the Cape Technikon before its merger with Peninsula Technikon, which formed CPUT. His visionary leadership helped shape the institution during a critical period in South Africa’s higher education history. Prof. Balintulo was a pioneer and passionate advocate for Universities of Technology, tirelessly promoting their vital role in responding to the needs of society and the world of work. His commitment to transformation was evident throughout his career, particularly during the challenging merger processes of the early 2000s. An expert in sociology and anthropology, Prof. Balintulo lectured both in South Africa and internationally, contributing extensively to academic scholarship since 1974. He earned his PhD in Sociology from the University of Warwick (UK) and also studied at the University of Fort Hare and the University of Durham (UK). Beyond his role at CPUT, he served as Vice-Chancellor of Walter Sisulu University and held leadership positions at other South African institutions. He chaired the Ministerial Review Committee of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), playing a crucial role in expanding access to higher education for disadvantaged students. Prof. Balintulo’s profound intellect, unwavering dedication to social justice, and deep understanding of South African society left an indelible mark on the higher education sector. CPUT honours his legacy and extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His life and work continue to inspire all who are committed to transformation and excellence in higher education.

Cyprian served CPUT with distinction for 22 years, during which he not only lectured in Small Business Studies, but also pioneered the very department itself. His efforts extended beyond the classroom, spearheading exchange programmes, securing international funding, and building platforms for students to access global opportunities. His dedication was rooted in a deep belief in the transformative power of education, especially for young entrepreneurs. Known for his humility, discipline, and unwavering passion for teaching, Cyprian left a lasting mark on every student who passed through his lectures and every colleague who had the privilege of working alongside him. He balanced his professional commitments with immense love for his family, always present and supportive as a father and husband. Cyprian’s wisdom, compassion, and integrity continue to inspire. His contributions helped shape the Business School into the vibrant academic hub it is today. He leaves behind two daughters and a son and all three are CPUT alumni. Though he passed away on 14 June 2019, his legacy lives on in the countless students he mentored, the programmes he built, and the lives he changed. May we remember Cyprian Winston Martin with honour, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.

In Remembrance of Frank Johannes Ralph van der Linde Dedicated Educator, Mentor, and Advocate for Students We remember and honour the life of Frank Johannes Ralph van der Linde, a devoted lecturer who served CPUT for more than 35 years with unwavering commitment and compassion. Frank was more than an educator, he was a lifeline for generations of students. He believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives, and this belief guided every aspect of his career. Whether through extra lessons at home, assisting students with admissions, providing meals, or making personal financial contributions, Frank consistently went above and beyond to support underprivileged students. For him, every student’s success was personal, he cheered proudly at graduation ceremonies, as if celebrating his own children. Beyond the classroom, Frank enriched student life by encouraging participation in sport. He was especially passionate about golf, organising tours and events to give students valuable exposure and opportunities beyond academia. His legacy is engraved in the many lives he uplifted, the values he embodied, and the selfless love he shared with his students and colleagues alike. Frank van der Linde passed away on 17th October 2023, just two days before his 70th birthday. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, the impact of his life’s work continues to echo across the CPUT community. He leaves behind a daughter that is also a proud alumnus of CPUT. May we remember him with deep respect and gratitude. May his soul rest in peace.

CPUT REMEMBRANCE DAY 2025
Tribute to the Contributors of the First CPUT Remembrance Day 2024 and Volume 1 of the Remembrance Booklet The inaugural Remembrance Day event at the Dome of Remembrance on 18th November 2024 marked a profound moment of reflection, unity, and honour for our university community. This solemn occasion would not have been possible without the dedication, passion, and collaboration of many remarkable individuals and groups who brought it to life. Our deepest gratitude goes to the members of the Dome of Remembrance Committee, whose unwavering commitment to commemorating the lives of our departed staff and students set the foundation for this meaningful event. Special thanks to Mr Calvin Maseko for planning the 2024 programme, ensuring every moment was thoughtfully crafted, and for writing the Volume 1 of the Remembrance Booklet. We acknowledge the invaluable support from MCD, whose skillful digitalising of the event allowed us to reach a wider community, preserving memories in an innovative and accessible way. They also managed logistics, creating a comfortable and dignified space for attendees. The event was gracefully anchored by Ms Shahieda Hendricks, whose eloquence as MC guided us through moments of remembrance with sensitivity and respect. We honour the legacy of leadership within the committee, especially Prof. Mayende, the first and former Chairperson of the Dome of Remembrance Committee, whose vision and dedication paved the way for this important initiative. Heartfelt thanks to our distinguished 2024 speakers: • Dr Laurine Platzky, Chairperson of Council, for her inspiring address, not only as Chairperson but also on behalf of the Council and Committee members; • Mr Thato Maswanganyi, Secretary General of the SRC, for representing the student voice with heartfelt words;
• Mr Jonny Basson, as a representative of organised labour, for his meaningful contribution on behalf of the passed employees; • Prof Driekie Hay-Swemmer, who offered the vote of thanks with grace and warmth; and • Prof Chris Nhlapo, whose keynote address gave the event profound purpose and direction. The musical tributes elevated the solemnity of the occasion: • Mr Prosperity Rikhotso, student, performed Adieu (A Closing Solemn Melody) with deep poignancy; • The haunting sounds of the bagpipes, beautifully played by a colleague from the Education Faculty, stirred our souls; • And the soulful saxophone performance by a talented student added to the reflective atmosphere. This collective effort embodies the spirit of CPUT — a community bound by respect, remembrance, and hope. As we turn the pages of this first volume of the Remembrance Booklet, may we carry forward the memories of those we honour and the dedication of those who keep their legacies alive. This immortalisation booklet provides a window into the personalities and history of our loved ones, honours those who have chosen CPUT as their place of education and work, and reminds our community that we remember and honour them.
