With a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, you will use techniques to conceptualise, design, analyse, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems, as well as solve engineering problems. Minimum Admission Requirements

National Senior Certificate (NSC/ Grade 12) with:

*A minimum achievement rating of 4 in at least four NSC 20-credit subjects.

• English, Home or First Additional Language (4)

• Mathematics (4); Technical Mathematics (5)

• Physical Sciences (4); Technical Science (5)

Recommended: One of the following

• Electrical Technology (3)

• Engineering Graphics & Design (3)

• Mechanical Technology (3)

National Certificate (NC)

• English (N4) (60%); Mathematics (N4) (60%); Engineering Science (N4) (60%)

National Certificate/ Vocational (NCV)

• English (60−69%) (5); Mathematics (60−69%) (5); Engineering Science (3) (min 60%)

The department utilises an Admission Point Score (APS) as selection criteria once your minimum admission requirements are satisfied. You also have to score a minimum of 30 on the APS for the mainstream course; 27–29 for the ECP, 23–26 should you be wait-listed.

Subject to the space availability, consideration will be given for admitting students to the Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) with: English (4); with one of either Mathematics/ Physical Sciences (4), and the other (3), with a minimum of 45%, or Technical Maths/ Technical Science (5) and the other (4) with a minimum of 55%.

Your on-the-job training

You will complete compulsory service learning projects during your first and third year, whilst gaining work experience in industry. Work experience can be gained in various areas of industry such as air-conditioning installation and repairs, maintenance and servicing of plant machinery, motor vehicles, buildings, etc.
