Shift_018: Asian Packaging Conference 2018 Concludes The two-day event, which took place 2 to 3 May in Bangkok, Thailand, has concluded another year.

Organised by Packaging & Print Innovation Asia (formerly known as AFTA), the conference took on a new theme this year: Shift_018. The conference attracted over 350 business owners and suppliers, packaging printers, converters, brand owners and designers.

The aim of the annual Asian Packaging Conference is to facilitate an active exchange of ideas, networking and participation in the growing packaging print industry in Asia.

The 16th edition featured business and technical presentations which were well-received by the attendees. The intensive programme featured 20 high value, inspirational and knowledgesharing sessions led by industry experts.

The conference covered issues in prepress, digital, flexo, gravure, finishing, design and branding faced by today’s print packaging business owners.

“We are proud to be able to bring all of the experts together under one roof for the benefit of the packaging and label industry in this region. We would like to express our gratitude to the speakers and industry partners for joining us over the two days, and for being generous with sharing their knowledge and expertise with our

visitors,” said Paul Callaghan, chairman of Asian Packaging Conference.

A usual staple of the event were table tops featuring manufacturing and supply companies. To better tailor to individualized business needs of delegates, the set-up allowed for oneon-one customised consultations.

Conference returns with impact Day 1 of the conference kicked off with a keynote presentation by Peter Schaeffer, partner of an investment firm in the print and packaging industry, New Direction Partners. Having closed more than one hundred transactions in virtually every segment of the print and packaging, Schaeffer’s presentations focused on “big picture” aspects of the business. business management and practices. His first presentation,

5 “Eight Imperatives to Grow During a Challenging Environment”, highlighted the eight essential practices to stand out in any industry.

Schaeffer later closed the first day of the conference with a presentation on succession planning. Speaking to a roomful of print and packaging business owners, some of which were family-owned, he highlighted the importance of having a specific timeline to ensure the security of a business after retirement.

Following the keynotes were a series of informative presentations, including the trend on augmented reality, ecoconsciousness in material use, the importance of mockups in design packaging, leveraging on digital print to grow businesses and advancements in flexo technology.

Day 2 opened with an optimistic trend report and opportunities in the print packaging industry in Asia Pacific by Thayer Long from Association of Print Technologies. Yet another set of educational talks followed, covering gravure industry trends, automating processes, forecasting on retail packaging in Asia and challenges and trends in flexo.

The second half of the day was an eightmember panel session where delegates can voice individualised concerns on their business. The panel consisted of Nick Gerovac from Vits International; Joe Lynch, Doyle Systems; Andrea Trevisi, Trelleborg; Kunal Avari from HP; Eric Tollemer from Cosfibel Premium; James Siever from European Rotogravure Association; Lindsay Nutley from QLM Label Makers Group.

During the session, visitors were invited to share challenges within the print packaging industry in a forum environment. Within the session, the audience were able to have their specific business challenges addressed by a diverse panel. Some of the issues discussed this year include: colour management technicalities, brand owner expectations versus printer and whether investing in new technology is crucial for business growth.

The Panel session first started at the 2017th Asian Packaging Conference, and proved a success. Converters, business owners, and printers were able to get direct answers to their specific issues. At the close of the event, organisers revealed that the 2019 edition will be held in India. Stay tuned to this space for more details on next year’s edition!

Flexo Graphic Transform In collaboration with HP, Thailand’s Flexo Graphic hosted an open house to introduce its new solutions for digital printing in packaging. Sha Jumari reports.

On 4 May 2018, Flexo Graphic held a successful open house event. Over 80 customers, brand owners and agencies were at its premises to be introduced to Flexo Graphic’s full range of printing solutions.

Flexo Graphic is one of the market leaders in the packaging printing industry in Thailand, having just adopted post-print flexo and digital printing. Based in Bangkok, the company is leading the path to innovate print through digital adoption and driving pages from analogue to digital.

“As the leader in digital transformation in Thailand, Flexo Graphic was able to

showcase to brands and clients its full capabilities at the open house. With the help of digital technology, Flexo Graphic can transform more ideas for campaigns and events without any limitations,” said Kunal Avari, regional business manager for HP PageWide Industrial APJ. Flexo Graphic currently has the HP Scitex 15500 Corrugated Press onsite, leveraging on the technology to grow their business with the digital printing transformation. The Importance of Consumer Experience in Thailand Millenial consumers are in control more than ever, igniting a digital packaging revolution within the retail space. A KPMG International 2018 Global Retail Trends report for Thailand reiterated the importance of customer experience as new technologies have placed the purchasing power in the hands of the consumer. The report stipulated that brands that are able to offer immediate and instant gratification, along with personalisation and accessibility, will be favoured.

“Thailand is witnessing a continuous inflow of FDI (foreign direct investment).

Major international retailers like TESCO & Carrefour have captured a notable market share in the total retail space in the country,” Avari continued. “The growing urban population is increasing the demand for modern retail and subsequently, the demand for modern retail-ready packaging.”

As marketing landscapes get messier, consumers are becoming increasingly spoilt for choice and novelty. The better-educated millennial consumers tend to have fragmented attention spans and have more direct ownership of a brand.

One of the easiest and most effective way is through packaging communication on a retail level. Digital printing enables just this, as brands can now adopt a more strategic and creative approach to packaging design.

BOBST launch first conn the new BOBST M1 IOT The BOBST exhibition stand at the recent tradeshow in Southeast Asia exhibition in Bangkok, Thailand, was filled to capacity every day of the show after the word spread that the announced BOBST M1 8-color narrow-web label machine in demonstration on the stand was actually the new M1 IoT. The drive to incorporate the Internet of Things (IOT) technology is high in the industry. The capability to access, in real time from remote devices, a constant stream of data relating to the manufacturing process and workflow, brings countless advantages to operational profitability and the quality of the output.

“Remote monitoring and IoT are set to become industry standard.

However, although increasingly widespread, connectivity is often still only considered in the realm of higher class of equipment,” explains Matteo Cardinotti, Head of Product Line Narrow & mid-web multi-process and converting Product Line and Managing Director of Bobst Firenze. “We are changing this: the new M1 IoT is the first mechanical shaft connected label press suitable for a large part of the market, bringing the possibility to tap into the benefits offered by IoT to the widest number of converters”.

All the features of the M1 IoT press were explained in detail to the audience, during demonstrations of two different mock-production label jobs, which ran 7 times each day of the show. The jobs addressed the requirements of the beer and perfume film labels market segments. Alongside the actual jobs being printed, one also featured cold foil and die cutting in one pass. Visitors could also view, in real time on a large screen next to the press, the production data available on the speaker’s mobile phone.

Connectivity of the M1 IoT is through the BOBST PrintTutorTM camera fitted on every unit, which delivers Artificial Intelligence capabilities to eliminate the fallacies of human intervention in setting up the press, bringing it automatically in register color after color and keeping the register during all phases of the production cycle. The operator does not need to adjust the register at speed variation and the register adjustment at job change is almost immediate, generating on average 20m of substrate waste during the demonstrations on stand at the show.

Digital wallpaper printing- Inkjet versus electrophotography Personalized wallpaper is on a roll (no pun intended) and so are web-to-print and print-on-demand strategies in general. It’s no wonder, then, that more and more wallpaper businesses are turning to digital solutions which allow them to cost-effectively produce short runs. If you’re a wallpaper printer considering going digital, your main dilemma basically comes down to inkjet versus electrophotography.

Large format inkjet technology can be divided into four categories based on the type of ink used: Water-based inkjet is at the cheaper end of the inkjet market, but less interesting for wallpaper printers due to its low production speed.

Solvent inkjet (as well as its improved variant eco solvent) is not suited for printing indoor applications due to its odor, and for health and sustainability reasons. Solvent ink is not environmentally friendly and produces prints that, even when dry, smell of chemicals and emit VOCs. Latex inkjet technology uses waterbased ink, emitting only a low level of VOCs. A wide range of latex inkjet equipment is available from entry level to production level but the production speed to produce high-quality indoor prints always remains modest.

Available on different investment and productivity levels as well, UV inkjet printing systems cure the printed image by means of UV light, produced by a metal-doped (e.g. iron or gallium iodide) mercury lamp or UV-LED. One of the main challenges, however, lies in the emitted odor of the printed product which makes it unsuitable for living rooms, bedrooms, hospitals, restaurants and other types of indoor use.

Koenig & Bauer 4.0 Packaging & Connected Services Koenig & Bauer is one of Europe’s pioneers when it comes to the digitalisation of business processes. As part of the “Koenig & Bauer 4.0 Packaging & Connected Services” open house from 6 to 8 June over 600 users from some 40 countries saw how digital transformation can change modern day-to-day printing house operations, optimise process workflows, create new customer experiences and make a company even more profitable.

As part of a series of impressive live sessions, the visiting print experts experienced first-hand solutions to streamline processes in all phases of print production, Lean Management and standardisation with the goal of preventing errors. This was in addition to information on data-based value-added solutions in the field of service which make workflows more transparent and maintenance more predictable. Ralf Sammeck, managing director of KBA-Sheetfed and executive board member of Koenig & Bauer, and Thomas Göcke, head of sheetfed marketing and CRM, welcomed the guests and highlighted Koenig & Bauer’s key success factors in sheetfed offset.

These range from strategic orientation, the focus on growth areas, outstanding products and strong partners to customer satisfaction, especially through digitalisation and the resulting new service offerings. Their summary: “We bring together what moves our customers forward. The networking of people, machines and data enables new business models that make users even more profitable.”

Seamless digital processes in a networked print company A Rapida 76 kicked off the series of live demonstrations by printing highquality luxury packaging in LED-UV with opaque white on metallised board.

As part of a complex demonstration,

the print experts witnessed seamless digital processes with MIS Optimus Dash with LogoTronic Professional and Esko Equinox on a Rapida 105 PRO which produced various packaging jobs prepared by MIS, the Ipress 106 K PRO flatbed die-cutter, the Rapida LiveApps series and service solutions such as PressCall, Visual Press Support, performance reports and the possibilities of predictive maintenance.

Sven Oswald, who amongst other things is a scientific anchorman for a public-service broadcaster in BerlinBrandenburg, brought everything together and showed the possibilities of cutting-edge data communication in a networked printing firm.

The print jobs and all necessary work steps were generated in the MIS system Optimus Dash live in front of the visiting experts. The flexibility and speed of this modern system is persuasive: from job scheduling to controlling and accounting.

Live printing and finishing At the same time as print production, Koenig & Bauer presented the world premiere of the Ipress 106 K PRO flatbed die cutter for die-cutting folding cartons. It has the proven feeder of the Rapida presses. Outstanding details include integrated blank stripping, high operating comfort, absolute register accuracy, short makeready times and flexible configuration options.

After the job was created in MIS, it was sent to the Rapida 105 PRO. The press operators can see all the information forward by MIS as a JDF ticket immediately at the console. They use the job information together with the CIP3 presetting data from pre-press to automatically set-up the press. After plate changing, inking-up and inline register corrections, printing began on yogurt packaging in an extended colour gamut 6c with Esko Equinox.

A constant eye on production and costs The management of a printing company can access all press and operating data at anytime from anywhere, even via smartphone or tablet pc, with LogoTronic Professional and the functions PressWatch and Speedwatch.

After printing has finished, LogoTronic Professional sends all production times and amounts of consumables used back to Optimus. It not only stores these times, but also press-specific notifications: every sample sheet removed, every production downtime is logged according to job. Optimus generates a cost breakdown based on the production times accumulated with just a few mouse clicks. The company can immediately see whether it is operating economically efficiently.

After the yogurt packaging, the Rapida 105 PRO printed a raft of other print jobs fully automatically. ErgoTronic AutoRun started a sequence of print jobs, using preset values, work steps and sequences set by the operator. He himself no longer has to intervene.

Dirk Winkler, head of print technology, commented on the individual automatic work steps and thus made them transparent for the visitors. A glance at the MIS showed what happened on the Rapida 105 PRO in theory and practice.

Communication with the Koenig & Bauer hotline takes place via PressCall at the console. There’s no need to make the usual calls. All remote maintenance-relevant data can be accessed via the hotline without delay or detours. Printers and service staff use VisualPressSupport for troubleshooting. The operator sets up a video stream with the service support technician. The service technician can mark, save and store images in the video. In addition, the service specialist can display documents on the screen of the mobile device at the press to support finding a solution. All this data is documented in the CRM platform so that it is also available for future service calls.

Users with a remote maintenance contract and a static VPN connection (Windows platform) receive a monthly performance report that displays the performance data (non-order-related data) and KPI (key performance indicators) of their press clearly. While value-added services based on the performance data of machines installed worldwide are still in their infancy at other companies, they are already firmly established at Koenig & Bauer.

In addition to the picture of past events, the data streams from the Rapida presses can be used to proactively (e.g. to perform maintenance) and predictively foresee events. To this end, Koenig & Bauer uses artificial intelligence algorithms and optimisation methods, such as machine deep learning tools, to identify patterns for the early detection and avoidance of unplanned breakdowns and to plan for necessary maintenance.

This permanent monitoring naturally requires the user’s consent. The longterm goal is to avoid errors before they occur. The data determined by the system is available to the user in the customer portal.

Breakout session for high-volume packaging A further breakout session focused on high-volume packaging production in medium and large format as well as the production of luxury packaging on a Rapida 106 double-coater press and Rapida RDC 106 rotary die cutter.

The highlights of high-volume printing on a six-colour Rapida 145 were print speeds of 18,000 sheets per hour and

autonomous printing with AutoRun. Packaging for food and detergents was produced in non-stop operation.

Conventional, low-migration inks from Huber, Actega FoodSafe dispersion coating and BillerudKorsnäs GC1 270g/m² (170lbs) board were used.

A seven-colour Rapida 106 with coater produced more folding cartons at speeds of up to 20,000 sheets per hour.

Image-determining elements in 4c and 7c colour gamut were printed with Esko Equinox, so that the advantages of seven-colour printing in the reproduction of special colours could be seen on one sheet.

Printing and finishing of luxury packaging Health care and cosmetics packaging was produced on a six-colour Rapida 106 double-coater press. The Rapida RDC has already been successfully established as a die cutter in three segments (packaging, in-mould labelling and commercial printing) and five processes (die cutting/scoring, hole punching and extraction, creasing/ embossing, stripping). A first user has already opted for the second machine in this series.

Health care packaging was blind embossed. At the same time it was grooved, punched and the waste was stripped. A Master Blanker from Laserck was available for blank stripping. Following a quick job change, cosmetic packaging was grooved, punched and stripped of waste on the Rapida RDC 106. With speeds of up to 15,000sph, the Rapida RDC 106 once again demonstrated its unprecedented production performance.

Sustainable materials are worth the cost, says GlobalData Many companies across the globe are scrambling to develop sustainable packaging materials to reduce environmental impact.

However, developing new packaging materials is a time-consuming and expensive process, and companies need to build flexibility into their supply chain and regularly update consumers on their progress to remain in the competition, says leading data and analytics company GlobalData.

GlobalData’s report, ‘Innovation Scenarios in Sustainable Packaging Materials’, reveals that two-thirds of consumers worldwide think that living an ethical or sustainable lifestyle is important to creating a feeling of wellbeing. This increased focus on environmental impact is creating new opportunities for sustainable packaging material producers.

Mayu Teeven, Associate Analyst of FMCG at GlobalData, says: “Pressure from governments and consumers is forcing companies to better track the environmental impact of their packaging. However, concerns remain over cost, barrier properties and product safety, product functionality, and scalability that must be addressed for sustainable materials to increase their market share.”

While analyzing the packaging landscape, the report states that glass packaging is seen as environmentally friendly, but under threat in a world where convenience is crucial. On the other hand, even though the growth of flexible packaging across many categories is driven by cost and convenience, it will come under threat due to the low sustainability credentials many plastics have.

MFC is a 100% renewable material based on cellulose fibers extracted from wood. While the use of MFC is currently niche and severely limited by production capability, GlobalData found that it has the potential to replace existing paper & board in food and drink cartons.

Teeven explains: “Consumers in regions such as Asia-Pacific are used to drinks being served in a carton format, which means there will be fewer obstacles to increasing adoption.

“EVOH, which is mainly made up of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, is relatively common in East Asian markets such as Japan. It is suited for a wide range of applications, but its environmental benefits can be hard to communicate to consumers as it may not be biodegradable.”

According to the report, even as media coverage of sustainable packaging becoming widespread and governments continue to create strong pressure to swap to more sustainable materials,

breaking the established habits of consumers will be difficult.

Teeven concludes: “The biggest challenge for producers is to convince consumers that these sustainable packaging materials are worth the cost. Although there are long-term savings to be made by manufacturers moving to more sustainable materials, in the short term prices will likely need to increase to cover the research and development costs of developing new materials and upgrading machinery in factories to work with the new packs.”

The MPS EF SYMJET: the hybrid printing solution A common challenge label printing companies are facing today is how to achieve and maintain a lucrative cost price per square meter in their overall label and packaging print production. The demand for small jobs and greater variation of labels is growing. Therefore, a combination between multiple press technologies, such as digital and flexo, is wanted.

Top 5 Next Generation Label Printing With the global market for label printing growing continuously, new demands for manufacturers come up. Newest studies have shown that there are five key technologies helping them to be ready for the future.

The global market for label printing is growing continuously. Until 2022 it will increase to a value of 45.22 billion dollars, with an annual growth rate of 4.1 percent. In the same period, the worldwide volume of labels printed will rise to 1.41 trillion A4 sheets.

Through this and changing market dynamics, the demands from label customers will also change and affect the manufacturers‘ choice of printed label type. According to new studies, there will be some major technologies and trends, having the potential to revolutionize the label printing market.

We had a look at the top five for you.

Light Weight Label Formats Decreasing the weight of product packaging, whether metal, glass or plastic, is a request, which customers and the packaging industry have in common. Labels, although they have not the biggest proportion of course, are contributing at least some extent to the weight of packaging.

Therefore, manufacturers are using smaller labels or thinner materials, when printing labels.

Latest developments in material science have aided to reduce the volume and weight

of label materials, without reducing the strength for handling and especially for the printing progress. A major advantage of thinner materials is, that the manufacturer can use longer rolls, so that here is less downtime to get a new roll and the customers will receive more labels from one roll. Nestle Waters North America for example, reduced the size of their bottle labels by 35 percent, which resulted in an annual saving of nearly 30,000 metric tonnes of plastic and 4,500 tonnes of paper.

HP launches new PageWide Presses for pre-print corrugated The new six-colour HP PageWide T1190 and T1170 presses aim to help packaging converters meet fast-changing brand needs.

HP Inc. unveiled two new six-color PageWide ultra high-volume inkjet web presses for pre-print corrugated packaging, the HP PageWide T1190 and HP PageWide T1170.

The new flagship PageWide T1190 Press offers 67% more throughput productivity compared with the current PageWide T1100S, delivering up to 305 meters/minute in six colours at full press speed. The addition of six-colour printing (CMYKOV) also expands the colour gamut for matching colours, opening new digital possibilities for brands, including short-runs, faster turnaround time, and versioning.

The PageWide T1170 Press prints 183 meters/minute in six colours, compared with four-colour printing at the same speed on the PageWide T1100S. Both the T1170 and T1190 presses are suitable for both coated and uncoated media, from 80 gsm to 350 gsm.

Additionally, HP Multi-lane Print Architecture (MLPA) boosts plant productivity by splitting the web into multiple print lanes, so different jobs, with different box sizes and run lengths, can be printed in the individual lanes.

Multiple ultra-short or short runs can be queued and printed together while a long run is printed in another lane.

These ultra-wide 2.8m Thermal Inkjet technology web presses are ideal for packaging converters seeking analogto-digital transformation with highvolume productivity in offset quality for pre-print corrugated packaging applications.

Additionally, the presses use HP A30 true water-based inks, containing no UV-reactive chemistries, and requiring no additional barriers for food packaging applications.

Italy’s Ghelfi Ondulati S.p.A. installed PageWide T1100S in 2016, and is now upgrading to the PageWide T1170.

The first PageWide T1190 Press will be a field upgrade to the T1100S that DS Smith is installing in its Fulda, Germany plant.

2018 Census reveals strategic to escalating demand Results show sustained income growth and acceleration of customercentric digital technology investment FESPA today reveals the headline findings of its 2018 Print Census, conducted in partnership with InfoTrends, a division of Keypoint Intelligence.

1405 respondents were surveyed, representing a 12% increase over the last Print Census published in May 2015. Respondents were from 102 countries, giving a significantly broader geographical reach than the 2015 research (+59%), with data collected throughout 2017 at FESPA events and from Association members in Europe, Eurasia, Mexico, Brazil, Thailand and South Africa.

The latest Print Census collected data from a diverse range of print businesses defining their business focus as: digital printing (17%); screen (15%); sign and display (10%); textile fabric and directto-garment (10%); commercial print and reprographics (13%); graphic arts and creative (11%); and packaging (4%).*

Key 2018 Print Census findings Analysing the data, the key trends revealed by the 2015 research are just as strong in 2018, and in many cases are even more prevalent, fuelled by continued economic recovery and the positive impact of technology in support of mass-customisation: 1) Optimism The optimism in the 2015 responses is reinforced in 2018; 83% of respondents state that they are optimistic for the future of their business (2015: 80%).

This is well-founded, with business from digital wide format continuing to grow, and respondents reporting CAGR of 4.2% since 2007. Today, digital output represents 44% of total revenues, and is forecast to grow to 53% of turnover within 2 years.

2) Customer demands Print’s ongoing redefinition as a customer-driven service industry is even more pronounced today than three years ago, as businesses meet the continued trend to mass customisation.

72% now report increasing demand for fast turnaround, 61% see growing requirement for short runs and 59% observe rising expectations of just-intime delivery (JIT).

3) Evolving wide format product mix Today’s sign and display applications landscape is dominated by banners; 68% regularly produce these and half of respondents see continued growth potential. Signs and billboards maintain their 2015 position among the top applications being produced by respondents.

POS/POP displays are gaining traction, with 59% of businesses experiencing growth in this area. More than half of businesses are also producing more self-adhesive applications, including wraps, vehicle graphics and decals, as they take advantage of continuous developments in digitally printable selfadhesive media.

The continued growth of printed décor applications is evident, with 74% of respondents today identifying wallpaper and interior décor as a growth area for their business.

4) Digital technology investment Print businesses continue to respond to sustained customer demand for fast turnaround, short runs and JIT delivery with strategic digital technology investments.

In the face of volume growth, increased capacity is now a key investment priority. 54% of respondents cite this as their main motivation for capital spend (2015: 34%). Cost reduction is a factor for 53%, while diversification into new markets and product offerings remains a focus of investment for 53% of those surveyed.

The research also reveals increased investment focus in areas impacting customer satisfaction and consistency.

34% plan to invest in quality control, 28% in web to print, and 27% each on cloud-based content management and colour management, supported by training spend.

Established patterns of technology evolution continue in 2018, with revenue from UV, latex and direct and dye sublimation growing, in contrast to

declining use of solvent, aqueous and analogue technologies. 27% of 2018 respondents, in the sign and display segment, plan to buy a UV-cure inkjet printer (flatbed or hybrid), with a further 18% planning UV roll-to-roll or latex investments.

Productivity is the dominant buying criteria, with 63% citing faster speed as the key attribute in a new printer.

The mean investment level in sign and display is 43% higher than in 2015, at Euros 144600.

5) Textile The 2018 Print Census was developed to arrive at a more detailed picture of the growing textile segment. Respondents include screen print businesses with a focus on textile applications, dedicated

textile producers and direct-to-garment businesses.

Garment products dominate across all textile businesses, with sports apparel, textiles for garments and fast fashion topping the growth applications ‘leader board’.

Digital adoption for textile is slower than in other segments; across all textile-related segments, production is still dominated by analogue processes.

However, among printers focused on textile, 56% have made digital investments, and 19% plan to do so in the next two years, aiming to reap the benefits of reduced time to market, customised creative collections, prototyping, and a positive impact on

environmental footprint by reducing water and energy consumption.

Production speed is an investment priority for 69% of textile respondents, and 55% want the ability to print directly onto untreated materials.

These investments are motivated by brand owner demand for time-sensitive production that delivers supply chain improvements such as waste reduction, optimises response to seasonal peaks and enables local delivery.

Screen and textile printers expect digital’s contribution to textile printing revenues to grow by 12% in the next two years.

6) Environmental demands The 2018 Census question set was expanded to acquire up-to-date insights into the importance of environmentally sustainable production.

Responses show that environmental investments are heavily influenced by customer expectations regarding sustainable manufacturing and materials.

76% say that customer demand for environmentally responsible products is shaping business strategy, with more than one in five stating that it is a major influence.

32% of those surveyed have responded by using energy-efficient or environmentally certified equipment to satisfy client demand, with other responses including training on sustainability, use of VOC-free inks and recyclable media, and end-of-life recycling programmes.

72% of PSPs have been able to invest in sustainability without increasing prices, which has preserved sales and maintained price competitiveness.

Drive change in the flexible packaging industry There is no questioning that the use of Extended Color Gamut (ECG) is growing.

Although the trend is developing faster for some printing technologies and in some market segments than in others, everyone agrees that a steady growth in the next 10 years is expected.

The new 20SEVEN flexo press from BOBST is the company’s latest expression of its strategic commitment to deliver ECG solutions for a variety of printing technologies and applications.

“BOBST has been an advocate of the ECG concept since 2013 with the now well-established REVO 7-color Digital Flexo technology developed with leading industry suppliers for narrow and mid-web inline flexo presses,” explained Federico d’Annunzio, Strategic Products Marketing Director, BOBST Business Unit Web-fed. “In 2017, BOBST introduced the THQ FlexoCloud, a fixed color palette solution for corrugated board post print applications. What are the key factors, market trends and ECG specific requirements considered in the development of the new machine?

“High quality imaging should be consistently repeatable run after run, at high speed, with both solvent-

based and water-based inks. The ECG implementation system should be open for use with different printing plates, inks or industry suppliers. The experience of our customers who have implemented the ECG project on other BOBST CI flexo presses like the 20SIX has obviously been invaluable in developing the solution,” said Dieter Betzmeier, R&D Director, Bobst Bielefeld. “From a technical point of view, we addressed the rigidity of the print deck, the ink flow, the drying and the stability of the register.”

To achieve accuracy and consistency, the frame vibrations are eliminated by firmly and accurately locking the print decks’ bearings. The 20SEVEN’s bearing bolts are tightened using a pneumatic tool, which applies the same torque, thus avoiding the variables derived from manual operation by different operators. The bearings are precisely kept in place as a result of the triangular geometry of the BOBST triLOCK system.

Ink is another factor that can have a major bearing on process consistency.

The BOBST smartFLO system does away with the variables that can have

an impact on the uniformity of ink consistency and flow. These include ink variations owing to environmental factors such as temperature and light, change of viscosity due to peaks in the flow from the ink bucket to the substrate and inconsistent ink metering as a result of the ink pumps.

The third fundamental aspect is press drying efficiency. This is even more pronounced with water-based ink printing, which is on the increase in flexible packaging applications. The new FSM (Full Surface Matrix) dryer provides a significantly higher efficiency compared with one-slot drying systems as the blast of air is applied to the substrate over the whole surface of the dryer through hundreds of small jets.

This not only guarantees drying at high production speeds, but also enhances register accuracy as the web is evenly pushed against the CI drum.”

For a converter, the adoption of the ECG printing process means many sizable economies of time and cost – no more changes of inks and resulting washing of print decks, no need for a huge ink inventory for storing numerous spot inks, no time wasted in ink mixing and a guarantee of color consistency for jobs that are run a long time apart or in different parts of the world. This begs the question why the pace of adoption by the wideweb flexo industry is not as fast as its advantages would suggest?

Essential Character Traits Are successful sales people made or born? It is the eternal question: the sales manager’s version of nature versus nurture.

Since I spend most of my time teaching sales people how to become better at their jobs, I’m 100 percent in the “made” camp. There are best practices in the sales profession, and outstanding sales people do many of the same things. A sales person can, and should be, taught those best practices so they know how to do the job well.

Much of my practices consist of identifying and teaching the best practices to sales people. I’m a believer in the notion that sales is a proactive profession – that you must first act, and then your actions get reactions. A good sales person acts in the right way.

His or her behavior is ultimately what determines his degree of success.

Thus, I believe that anyone can be taught the principles, processes and practices of effective sales. I like to characterize it like this: On a 1 – 10 scale, I can take 7s and make them into 10s. I can take 4s and make them into

7s. I can take 1s and make them into 4s. But I can’t take 1s and make them into 10s.

As in every sophisticated endeavor, in the world of sales it sure helps if you have the aptitude and character with which to begin. “Character” is the operant word here. The Encarta Dictionary defines character as “the set of qualities that make somebody distinctive, especially somebody’s quality of mind and feeling.” In a common sense, we understand a person’s character to be that combination of qualities, beliefs, tendencies and attitudes that give rise to his/her behavior.

It is the combination of characteristics that define who is the person. The practices and principles we teach instruct the person on what to do.

While countless books and articles have addressed “what successful sales people do”, few have described “who successful sales people are.”

I don’t claim to have the last word on this, nor do I believe that this group of characteristics is the whole story. But, from one person’s perspective, here are my observations of the essential character traits of a successful sales person.

First, The first characteristic that I see among successful people is this: They truly want be successful. This isn’t as simple and self-evident as it sounds. The world is mostly populated by people who don’t want to be successful – at least not if it is going to cost them anything. Most people would like to have the benefit of success – the sense of confidence and competence, the material advantages, the respect and admiration of others – it’s just that they aren’t willing to accept the cost that is the inevitable prelude to success.

of Successful Salespeople Second, I call characteristic number two “the ability and propensity to learn.” For sales people, I define learning as exposing yourself to new ideas, and then changing your behavior in positive ways as a result. Thus a successful sales person is always looking for the next good idea, and continually experimenting with practices and behaviors that are designed to give him the best results.

This is the operating expression of the first characteristic. Whereas the desire for success supplies the energy and motivation, the ability and propensity to learn is one key way that motivation expresses itself.

Success is almost always the result of a consistent, long range investment of time and energy on the part of the successful person. You must give something up if you want to be successful. For example, if you want to be home everyday to watch Oprah, and you won’t give that up, you probably won’t be successful. You’re not willing to give up something in order to get something larger.

Successful sales people want to be successful to the point they are willing to accept the costs and invest the time and effort that it takes to be successful.

Thus, the success-focused sales person works more hours than his average colleague. They try to make their first appointment for 7:45 a.m. and their last for 4:30 p.m. And when someone cancels, or the sales person finds himself with unplanned downtime, he finds something productive to do.

Whereas most sales people have not invested $20 in their own development in the last year, the success-seeking sales person constantly buys the books, listens to the CDs, and attends the seminars in an attempt to gain more ideas and, therefore, shape his behavior more effectively. He/she is eager to learn from others, pays attention at sales meetings, and solicits his manager’s input into his performance.

He constantly thinks about his job, and continually tries to do it better.

This willingness to trade a short-term pleasure and invest in themselves for the long term benefit is the first characteristic of a successful sales person. Most just aren’t willing to make the sacrifices that success calls on them to make.

Following this life-changing practice means that eventually every successseeking sales person is going to become exposed to the best practices of his profession, and every sales person so inclined will eventually fold them into his/her routines. That means, equipped with this characteristic and given enough time, they are going to be successful. It is inevitable.

These two characteristics are so powerful and fundamental that they form the cornerstone of a success profile for a sales person. The other characteristics which follow are derived from and expressions of these two characteristics.

Third, For example, successful sales people deal successfully with adversity. They don’t let failure knock them off the path. They see failures and adversity as temporary stumbling blocks and bounce back from every defeat. This is such a pronounced characteristic of successful sales people that some authors hold it up as the single most outstanding characteristic of successful people.

It is this characteristic that causes them to make the second sales call after having been rejected in the first. It is this characteristic that stimulates the sales person to approach just one more prospect or visit this account one more time in spite of having failed previously.

It is this characteristic that prods the sales person to bounce back from a failed marriage, a financial reversal, a bad experience with an employer, or a manager with whom he doesn’t get along.

Motivated by his desire to succeed, and equipped with the ability to learn, he sees adversity as just another learning experience, and becomes more focused, wiser and more committed as a result.

Fourth, The last of my big four characteristics is “the ability to focus”. This is particularly important in our 21st Century economy. There are so many “things to do”, so many opportunities and demands on our time, the unfocused

sales person can squander much of his day reacting to the superfluous.

Remember the movie “City Slickers?”

When asked his secret for living a successful life, Curly held up one finger. “One thing” he said. Focus on one thing and do it well.

Very few people can do more than one thing exceptionally well. Sales is an incredibly sophisticated profession wherein real, long-lasting success takes years of disciplined work. Successful sales people know that, and stay focused on the basics of their job, and the practices and principles that they know will pay off.

Given these four characteristics and enough time, the sales person will become successful. When we find one of them, and then we add training in the principles and practices that define the best way to do the job, we have every reason to expect that person to develop into one of the successful superstars.

It starts with character.

Meeting all requirements for printing on corrugated board Rondo-Ganahl, an Austrian manufacturer of corrugated board packaging, is a company steeped in tradition. It is now using Sappi’s Fusion Topliner with its recently installed Durst digital printer, producing personalised corrugated folding boxes in short as well as longer runs with very short lead times at its plant in St. Ruprecht/Raab.

Sappi’s brilliant white fresh fibre liner was chosen following a series of print and material tests. Fusion Topliner achieved excellent results – not only with offset and flexo, but also with digital printing.

“We were looking for papers that would cover a very broad spectrum of print and provide us with peace of mind across all printing technologies,” says Karl Pucher, Managing Director at Rondo-Ganahl AG St. Ruprecht/ Raab. “We were extremely impressed

with the brilliant white appearance of Fusion Topliner, its strength values, the smooth folded edges, excellent adhesive properties and fantastic print image.” The packaging industry is still dominated by offset and flexo print, however, as Pucher explains, “the market is changingand the number of products is increasing. There is demand for a wider variety of packaging in smaller quantities. Digital print allows us to respond more quickly and provide our customers with more targeted support for new product launches or seasonal promotions.”

Rondo-Ganahl uses Fusion Topliner in a weight range of 135 to 180 g/m2 for shelf-ready packaging, special editions for food retail, customised wine cartons as well as a broad array of POS displays. The company sees itself as a solutions provider, proposing materials and corresponding printing techniques that are most suitable and effective for its customers’ specific requirements. Its packaging developers always advise the use of Fusion Topliner when there is a need for a package with a strong visual appeal and a high quality standard.

Depending on the customer’s requirements and job profile, the corrugated board panels are printed on Fusion Topliner with offset, flexo or digital. Since installing the first Durst Delta SPC 130 printer in Austria at the beginning of 2018 at the St. Ruprecht/ Raab plant, digital print volume has increased significantly. Rondo-Ganahl benefits from its geographical proximity and a long-standing relationship with

the Austrian manufacturer Durst. Since there is no need for printing plates, the initial set-up costs for this productionclass digital printer are low, and the digital printing process enables the creation of complex packaging and displays quickly and efficiently with no compromise in quality.

“Fusion Topliner is a true all-rounder, proving its qualities across all types of printing and enabling us to explore new business opportunities and customer segments with digital print,” Pucher concludes.

Second edition of CCE South East Asia Announced A group of industry associations and a Thai government body has announced the 2nd edition of the CCE South East Asia - Thailand 2018 trade show, which will highlight the Thai Corrugated Packaging industry. being exhibited at CCE South East Asia - Thailand 2018 is expected to far surpass the previous show, which gives Thai and ASEAN-based corrugated paper industry entrepreneurs a chance to see new machine innovations and technologies while building up their business network."

The event runs concurrently with ICE South East Asia from 5-7 September 2018 at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC), Bangna, and will highlight the latest machines and equipment from leading manufacturers throughout ASEAN, offering a showcase of direct-to-user solutions.

The four organisations comprising the CCE South East Asia partnership are the Thai Corrugated Packaging Association; the Thai Pulp and Paper Industries Association; the Thai Screen Printing & Graphic Imaging Association; and the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

The CCE - ICE 2018 event is part of the group's broader aim to expand manufacturing capabilities and drive sustainable growth in the Thai Corrugated Packaging Manufacturing industry, in line with government's 'Thailand 4.0' digital-era development plan. The first edition in 2016 logged over 3,248 trade visitors and over 90 exhibitors present. The growth of ASEAN’s corrugated and folding carton industry has led to a 40% additional floor space in the 2018 edition.

Increase the marketability of their metallized film Converters of metallized film need to meet the requirements of the market and create a competitive advantage; by using added-value applications, converters can make their products stand out in a crowded market.

Improve film quality by reducing pinholes and other defects Any defects on metallized film can lead to a drastic deterioration of water vapour and oxygen barrier properties; when looked at under a microscope the film will display a phenomenon known in the industry as “Starry Night”. The reduced water and oxygen barrier leads to a reduction in shelf life of food products. The flexible packaging industry requires products with high barrier properties and therefore a long shelf life, in order to meet these

requirements, converters need to be able to produce metallized film with a reduced number of pinholes and other defects.

In order to address this issue, BOBST developed the DarkNight® process which achieves high barrier, low defect metallized films without the need to use high Optical Density (OD) deposition levels (>3.0 OD) to achieve high OTR & WVTR barrier. The process works in conjunction with the BOBST Hawkeye pinhole detector and the Optimised

Web-Handling System to provide a new approach to defect reduction.

The use of lower OD levels means that the DarkNight®process enables production of high barrier metallized film at a lower cost.

Produce sustainable high barrier transparent film Consumer market research has demonstrated the trend for convenience food is growing and along with this consumers wish to see the content of the product they are purchasing. This means that converters need to be able to produce packaging which meets these requirements whilst providing a long shelf life. AlOx coated films provide high barrier and transparency as well as being recyclable and sustainable but converters can find issues during some processes as the barrier can be affected.

BOBST has done extensive research into this area and the result is the BOBST Turnkey Solution for the conversion of AlOx coated films. The process incorporates the application of an off-line topcoat which protects the barrier functionality during conventional conversion process such as printing and lamination. Additionally, the BOBST solution has the potential to reduce the number of layers in the laminate structure resulting in packaging simplification with a duplex laminate rather than the traditional triplex structure.

Reduce risk of de-lamination by achieving high metal adhesion Metal adhesion has been a challenge for converters for many years as traditional metallization even with

plasma treatment can have poor metal to polymer bonding this causes delamination which results in the failure of the packaging. Today there is an increasing demand for even higher levels of metal adhesion due to the trend for more complex packaging structures.

Part of the problem which leads to delamination is low surface energy on the metal side which contributes to poor lamination bonding.

BOBST has developed an innovative approach to address this common issue which eliminates the need for chemically treated films by promoting chemical anchoring (chelation) of the first aluminium particles creating a metallizing seeding layer that provides superior bond strength properties.

The Forgotten Target Group: How Packaging Design Catches Seniors Tetra Pak published their annual Consumer Generations Whitepaper, according to which seniors are a highly underrated target group that is far too often forgotten when it comes to packaging design. Fitting their needs, however, can easily be managed when five factors are considered.

Did you ever wonder why your grandparents continue buying a certain product, though there are various cheaper and better alternatives? An important decision factor has been identified by Tetra Pak and it does not concern the quality of a product, as you might think, but it’s all about the design!

Packaging design can focus on many different aspects and thus targets different consumer groups. Millennials, for instance, are often intrigued when the design is fancy and attention-catching, though there is a slight movement towards the more natural or simplistic style. So, the industry can design their products in order to address certain groups of people. A target group that is too often forgotten although it occupies one of the strongest buying powers, are seniors – people over 60 years old. In order to catch a 60-year-old’s attention, packaging design has to be adapted accordingly and there are different strategies that can make a product more attractive for this target group. But first of all: Why is this group so important?

Do Not Underestimate The Buying Power of Seniors

Tetra Pak published their annual Consumer Generations Whitepaper, according to which seniors are a highly underrated target group that is far too often forgotten when it comes to packaging design. The reason why it is so profitable for a company to target seniors is simple – once they are satisfied with a product, they do not look any further for alternatives. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, but in contrast to other target groups seniors are the most loyal. Furthermore, they are willing and able to pay a certain price for the quality. Once they are convinced that your product is good, they are very likely to stick with it, even if there are cheaper alternatives.

But in order to tie this target group to your brand, the packaging design of a product has to fit the senior’s needs.

First of all, avoid using the word senior.

They know exactly how old they are and do not need your product to tell them. Rather, adapt your packaging to their needs. For example, it is widely known that the eyesight can worsen with age. So, what seniors need are big letters – not only the product name

Five Factors for Success With Seniors When your label has convinced a senior to buy your product, it would be a shame if he or she was unable to open it at home, because with an older age, in most cases, comes a reduced grip strength. To put it in a nutshell: There are five factors that should be considered when designing packaging that appeals to the older generation – Visual communication, legibility, opening, handling and perishability.

A company that understands the senior’s struggles and adapts their products accordingly is the SCA Tissue Europe in Munich. For ZEWA Soft toilet paper they developed an easy way to open the package by perforating its corner.

This enables people with a reduced grip strength to open the package without much effort and also without tearing open the entire thing. The packaging thus meets the factors opening and handling. Furthermore, they featured an information box on the package that visualizes the opening and corresponds visual communication as well as legibility, since the instructions can be easily deciphered by elderly customers.

SCA Tissue Europe is however among the very few pioneers in this area, so there is much room for improvement, especially in the food sector. The forgotten target group seniors are loyal customers whose buying powers are too often overlooked.

Epson opens office in Vietnam Seiko Epson Corporation and Epson Singapore Pte. Ltd. have announced the establishment of a new sales subsidiary and office in Vietnam.

The new subsidiary, Epson Vietnam Co., Ltd. ("EVNL"), began operations on April 1, 2018.

Epson had previously sold products in Vietnam through its sales subsidiary in Thailand. In 2010 it established a Vietnam representative office focused on market research.

"The establishment of the office in Vietnam will strengthen Epson's business and brand in the region.

There is much potential for growth in the country, with a GDP forecast of 6.3% in 2017. We look forward to rolling out new Epson products in our

four key areas of innovation: inkjet, visual communications, wearables and robotics," said Hideto Nakamura, general director, Epson Vietnam.

"Vietnam's printer market is currently dominated by laser printers. However, there is extensive scope for growing sales by emphasizing the advantages of our high-capacity ink tank printers.

Epson Vietnam will play an important role in developing this promising market," he added.

According to the latest IDC Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker 2017Q4 release, Epson's market share for highcapacity ink tank printers in Vietnam in 2017 stood at 53%.

Building Anticipation through Luxury Packaging Contrary to most consumers these days who seek instant gratification, luxury brands aim to increase their sense of anticipation. Three main aspects decide whether this and a strong brand association can be achieved.

Most of the time in today’s busy and hectic world, people are seeking things that satisfy their desire for instant gratification. Consciously looking forward to something and enjoying the process of waiting for and eventually receiving a product seems to have come out of style. Accordingly, the packaging of a product is usually nothing more than a means to an end and is forgotten rather quickly. This is really unfortunate as the unveiling of a product is an important part of

the magic and can feel like an event itself – if done correctly. Examples of this can be found primarily in the segment of luxury brands. These brands intentionally work at delaying gratification for a heightened sense of anticipation.

One of the best examples for this is Apple. They understand how to build anticipation at every stage of a consumer touchpoint. Ranging from pre-orders, the keynote at the launch all the way up to the product packaging – each step follows a strict plan to elevate anticipation and provide a layered unveiling experience. This makes the consumer feel rewarded and creates a deeper consumer brand relationship.

Overall, there are three ways anticipation can be built through luxury packaging.

Build Interaction A user-initiated process of unravelling details, for instance, is a great way for a brand to let the consumer interact with the product. This approach has been taken by the Australian wine brand 19 Crimes who launched an Augmented Reality app. Hovering a mobile device over the bottles brings the character on the label to life. The information then teaches you about one of three different criminals-turned-colonists.

As a result of being guilty of at least one of the 19 crimes, these people had been sentenced to live in Australia where they forged a new country as pioneers in a frontier penal colony.

66 certification testing of its new silvery metallised PET film-laminated paperboard, Metalprint Digital, which is custom designed for the HP Indigo 12000 series of digital printing presses, the Swedish company also gained an exciting benchmark example of Metalprint Digital’s performance ability. The printers had simultaneously been asked to develop an exclusive packaging for the launch of Colgate’s gold toothbrush, the Gold 360.

From the sheets left over from the certification testing, the printers created a packaging for Colgate in the form of a gold bar – unusually, even before the paperboard was on the market.

The importance and potential of Augmented Reality in packaging have been emphasized in an online quantitative study conducted by Mindshare and Zappar. They found that a third of 1,000 UK smartphone owners above the age of 18 believe that Augmented Reality would be helpful in making shopping choices.

They are also increasingly expecting products and other physical objects to contain additional layers of digital content or information. Overall 55 percent of them want to be able to point their phone at any object and receive information about it.

Create Surprises Long-lasting brand associations can also be achieved by creating sensual experiences. The opportunities to surprise consumers are diverse and can be olfactory, tactile or audible.

Whether it be butter paper infused with floral fragrances or spot varnish printing over a matt background – sensory cues for luxury products are always subtle. Bib & Tucker have done a great job at incorporating many layers of sensory cues into their bourbon whiskey bottle. The bottle combines raised pattern glass, a matte label and corded exposed cork, creating a product that feels old, cared for and thoughtfully hand-crafted.

However, it must be noted that our reaction to a product is rarely entirely driven by the enjoyment for what we feel or hear, but rather by the meaning we ascribe to the sensational element.

The effect of sensorial packaging cues can thus differ immensely between individuals.

Ensure Quality Aside from building interaction and creating surprises, there is one more important aspect that far too many luxury brands ignore: A noble packaging is only half of the deal and nearly useless if the product lacks its expected quality. Chocolates, for instance, that melt in hot and humid conditions totally ruin the product experience – regardless of how extraordinary the packaging looks, smells or feels. Therefore, brands should invest in improving the delivery of their goods and create packaging that minimises the risk of damage.

This has been done by Koko Artisanal Chocolate. They placed an ice-pack at the bottom of their boxes to ensure optimal temperature. This way, the product, as well as the packaging, can reach the consumer fully intact.

A couple of years ago, Metalprint, which is based on Invercote G, attracted great interest in digital print circles. One limitation, though, was that it could only be used in the biggest presses with the equipment to apply a primer. Together with HP Colgate’s gold toothbrush, the Gold 360, was launched in Norway in packaging in the form of a gold bar. The packaging is printed on Invercote Metalprint Digital 300 g/ m² + 29 g/m², 420 µm, 16.5 pt.

68 Indigo, Iggesund Paperboard has now developed another version, Metalprint Digital, which is customised and certified for HP Indigo’s 12000 presses.

“The certification test runs exceeded expectations and we’re impressed by how well Metalprint Digital functioned in our press,” Widlic continues. “It works so well because Invercote is fundamentally stable with good quality and a fine surface. When the metallised film is then applied by using a forgiving method, the result is the mirror-smooth finish that is an ideal prerequisite for a superb print result.”

Print House is one of the pioneering digital printers in Norway. Until the beginning of 2018 it had about 20 employees before merging with a considerably larger group of printing companies, 07 Media.

“Here at Print House we’ve been able to follow the exciting developments in digital printing,” Widlic says. “The growth in the packaging segment has been particularly impressive and still has a lot of potential.”

The ability to produce small series of packaging involving complex printing opens up new possibilities for small companies. Packaging printed with traditional technology involves relatively high start-up costs, which are an obstacle for companies that want to limit their print runs for cost reasons.

“That factor is what’s driving the expansion of our packaging business, as well as the advantages that digital technology offers when you have to make many versions of a basic packaging design,” Widlic concludes.

Designing Packaging for Healthy Snacks – A New Era of Essentialism As healthy snacks are becoming increasingly popular, packaging designers have to accommodate to new requirements. Creating a stylish and modern, yet clean-looking packaging can be a much easier task if four easy tips are followed.

The conscience of the society for a healthier lifestyle has been growing

for a couple of years now. People pay more and more attention to their activity levels, regenerative measures and, of course, to their nutrition.

While traditional eating habits of three main meals per day still exist, people appreciate the opportunity to have a healthy snack while they are on the move. As a result, packaging designers aim to accommodate to these new requirements.

As with every other product, it is decisive that the visual appearance of a packaging fits the character of the product. In case of healthy snacks, consumers are becoming increasingly conscious in terms of moral obligations and food origin.

Accordingly, they want clean labels, simple sentences and real, recognisable ingredients – overall purity and authenticity. Companies thus need to tell the “seed to product” story in an ethical and transparent way.

But how do they do that? To create a convincing packaging, designers might want to follow the guideline below.

Packaging Hierarchy: The Foundation of a Tidy Look First, designers need to introduce a clear, structured packaging hierarchy.

This will help to communicate a simplified message which is easy to understand. Overloading a design with as many features and benefits as possible might seem alluring; however, contrary to the majority of packaging

styles of the past, people nowadays appreciate simplicity much more.

How a well-structured packaging hierarchy can look like, has been shown by Natasha’s Kale Crunchies

by Dynamo. Their design can be easily divided into four essential pieces of content: brand, product, benefits and flavour. Following their example, the name of the brand should be prominent but not over power. The product name, on the other hand, can be large and confident. Apart from written descriptions, real product imagery is a nice way to display what the food actually looks like.

Both brand and product name can be given additional characteristics through the size, font and colour of the typography. Finally, the benefits and flavour should be concisely illustrated on the packaging. Product features such as vegan or gluten free are wellsuited for the use of iconography.

Designers should ask themselves the following questions: Are the elements complementing and informing in a coherent way? And is it easily possible to figure out what the product is? If these questions cannot be answered with ‘yes’, the design should probably be modified.

designers have to choose the appropriate wording. For snack designers, clear and plain language is the way to go since their target group tends to be busy and does not have time to read long and confusing texts.

The packaging of a product should therefore only feature information which is relevant for the consumer.

The Gaea fruit bars do not list anything else than the six ingredients, which is exactly everything consumers want and need to know.

Equally important is the selection of the right colour palette. Designing the packaging for a healthy snack does not mean that the colours have to be all naturally or boring. Eccentric typography and vivid colours can help the product become livelier and more recognizable. Apart from this, young people are keen to try bold and extravagant flavours – something which can be translated through a creative and non-standard packaging look.

Finally, the packaging format is crucial for its success. Designers have to keep in mind that snacks are primarily created to be consumed on the move. A small resealable pouch is thus the perfect way to respond to the requirements of the consumers.

This packaging format allows them to reclose the bag and pack it away – without letting the food lose its freshness.

Flexible and Printed Electronics in 2018 – Numerous Applications for Hybrid Electronics Hybrid electronics kept being on the rise in 2017. Numerous applications

will benefit from this recent technology in the future, including sensors and displays.

The number of applications for flexible and printed electronics is steadily increasing. This is no wonder since they might change our lives and improve user experience significantly.

Hybrid electronics, merging the advantages of silicon-based technologies with printing or other low-cost manufacturing processes, are increasingly desired and helping many new products to approach mainstream.

One of the most recognised examples of hybrid electronics are sensors.

These are now entering more commercial and industrial areas such as medical, automotive, aerospace, cosmetics, packaging and many more. According to this, Malcolm Thompson from NextFlex, America’s Flexible Hybrid Electronics Institute, states that he “would say there’s tremendous growth in both the number and diversity of applications for sensors“.

L’Oréal, one of the five largest beauty businesses in the world, has recently provided a convincing example of the applicability of sensors. Their product “My UV Patch” is a stretchable skin sensor which monitors UV absorption. Reportedly, the patch has been sold more than a million times so far.

Guive Balooch, global vice president of L’Oréal’s Technology Incubator, speculates about the reason for the high demand: “My UV Patch unites innovative technology with L’Oréal’s extensive scientific research on skin and La Roche-Posay’s mission to increase consumers’ sun-safe behaviours.”

La Roche-Posay is L’Oréal’s skincare brand and provides the patch for free when purchasing one of their sunscreen.

At least part of the success of the My UV Patch might be due to its customer-friendly appearance. L’Oréal has achieved to create a wearable that does not interfere with the user’s daily routine. Because of its comfortable, flexible and thin character it does not have to be taken on and off and behaves like a second skin. As the awareness for the impact of sunlight rises more and more, such patch is a practical way to monitor UV absorption.

Boeing Research & Technology is focusing on the use of flexible sensors for factory operations, add-on sensors for enhanced data collection services and advanced health monitoring for products. As Dr. Robert Smith, Technical Fellow at Boeing, explains, collecting data is generally constrained by the distributed nature of gathering sensor data, which requires access at physical locations and wiring for data, power and control. However, Dr. Smith is certain that “with the emergence of flexible hybrid electronics, the possibility of integrating power, communication, processing and sensor capability onto a single flexible, conformal device becomes realisable.”

Inexpensive Mass Production as Future Goal

In the field of displays, inkjet printing of quantum dot displays is coming closer to reality. Furthermore, OLED is an area that has long been seen as an opportunity for mass production. Universal Display is investing $15 million to double the commercial production of its UniversalPHOLED phosphorescent emitter products. A product which has already been introduced in 2017 is Bosch’s EcoSilence Drive Washing Machine, whose OLED touch screen allows users to preset the time a wash cycle begins.

He is convinced that the potential applications are practically limitless. This underlines that it is almost certain that flexible and printed electronics will gain in importance in the next years.

The progress of the industry and the emergence of innovations will therefore be exciting and fun to observe.
