Chairman’s Message Welcome to yet another year of the Asian Print Awards. This year we are in Bangkok Thailand for the 12th time, and our 3rd time to celebrate in Bangkok.

Again the entries were of brilliant quality, so the judges tell me, and with a new member joining us to judge in Singapore they spend 3 long days going thru every entry to award Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. You will see that this year we had winning entries from almost every Asian Country, but again Thailand and India have stepped up to the plate and performed very well indeed Digital continues to grow across all sectors in the industry and had a big showing this year with more and more entries coming in. Those that said digital won’t have an impact on our industry must by now realized that those were the wrong choice of words.

We also continue to see the web offset quality reaching new heights this year, the best we have ever seen, I guarantee you some would have trouble telling the difference between offset on web these days, that’s just how good the quality is. .

So I say a job very well done to all the winners of the Asian Print Awards 2014, I hope that you all continue to produce top quality work and I see you again on stage for the 2015 APA Awards Event

Thank you to Alf Carrigan (Uncle Alf) The Management/Staff and committee members would like to thank Alf for his 12 years of help and dedication, being the Chairman of the Independent Judging panel and also being chair and moderator for the conference over many years.

For those that would like to know, Alf earlier this year decided to retire due to pressure of “too much travel” as he was still the Chairman of the Asian Print Awards, the Thai Print Awards and AFTA/AGA/ALA Packaging Excellence Awards. He would have been required to have 8 trips from his home in Melbourne to Asia for his commitments, and for even a younger person this would have been a awful lot!.

So Alf thank you and may you really get a chance to enjoy for “own” time with Gay and the grand kids. We will all miss you here in Bangkok and future events and hope maybe one day you will pop in and say hi to all of us.

Let it been known that you did a fantastic job over the 12 years that we were all together, in many - many asian countries!

Adjudication 2014

The independent judges considered each entry for print quality and awarded on the standard of the samples submitted. The judging panel has no knowledge of the actual entrants as this information was not supplied with the sample.

Brief to the judges The objective of the Asian Print Awards is: “To raise the standard and promote the achievements in excellence of Asian printing.�

Criteria for judging Each entry will be evaluated for print quality. Judging is based on excellence of print quality achieved. The submitted sample will be assumed to be representative of the total run.

The objective of the judging should be to award no more than one Gold, Silver and Bronze award in a single category.

However, there will be occasions where because of the variations in the dimension (whether creative, budget or degree of difficulty) of the entries within the category, more than one award will be appropriate.

There will be occasions where entries are considered to be below achievable standards and awards (either gold, silver or bronze) should not be made.

2014 Judges’ Report The 12th edition of the Asia Print Awards was an excellent contest, hard fought in numerous categories, where the majority of the entries are all very good work. Meaning, not only the production equipment used is the best money can buy, also the people crafting these products are trained, skilled, experienced and above all, dedicated to maintain the rigourous standards set out by the company for its customers.

The 2014 independent panel of judges drew experienced and keen eyes for print from Australia, Belgium, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

This year was a particular year for our judges as they had to miss the leadership of our inaugural and most charismatic chairman, Mr. Alf Carrigan. Alf build the team year on year for 11 consecutive years. He has done a great job to bring together people with a wealth of experience from various sectors of the printing industry, specialists who share an intense couple of days each year in the beginning of October working through all the entries to select the best. For the first time this year, we had to carry on without his leadership.

Still, he did surprise us all in a big and fun way, as nobody else can. A big thank you from the judges.

Alf was instrumental in setting out the standards in judging this competition. These standards will be maintained. In short: all entries are judged on their print quality with degree of difficulty an important consideration. When it comes to the finalists also secondary criteria will come into view to judge the overall quality of the end product, i.e. the prepress and finishing. When other criteria are considered they are specifically mentioned in the description of the category on the entry form, e.g. functionality in packaging.

In the embellishment category we saw a pop-up book that folded out in a 3D board game. A briljant idea. As we struggled to fold it back to its book format it lost judges support for a medal.

The winners can be a stand out. For various categories the quality of the entries is that good that the judges will come to vote. Weboffset categories, sheetfed magazines and 4 or more colour bookprinting are typically the hardest fought.

But also in the digital categories we see an overall rise of quality products being produced.

In digital, the majority of the entries are short run productions.

There is absolutely stunning work. The digital capability is clearly there. Personalized, variable data jobs, there were not that many yet. Let us urge the marketeers to get into big data and learn to benefit.

For the colourproofing category we saw different technologies showing excellent matching results. The winners are still the inkjet printed ones, it will be interesting to see how this will keep developing.

A word of thanks to the people behind APA. For sticking their necks out and create a competition that has helped to move the print production quality up in the region - in my seven years on the panel there has been a noticeable overall progress in quality - and for the tremendous amount of work they go through every year in registering and sorting the entries, so that the judges can do their work.

A big thank you to the judges, donating 4 days of their time each year to qualify all the entries and find the winners.

They are looking forward to judge the work you will be setting aside from this time onwards during another year of production.

May you all enjoy great orders, excellent partnerships with your customers and suppliers and your dedicated workforce that deliver the winners in this competition.

In the limited edition category we had entries with magnificent pictures, absolute stand out photography, where the printing and the finishing had let it down. It illustrates that choosing the right print production company for a project, does make a difference.

We treat all entries with respect as we are cognisant of the effort in selecting and submitting the best of your production for this event. Second copies we ask for can make the difference between a gold and a silver. We do refer to these.

If a great work has a blemish that will discount its chances, the second copy does get looked into.
