Chairman’s Message Welcome back to another year of the Asian Print Awards, this being our 10th anniversary, held on the island of Sentosa, Singapore. Looking back over the last 10 years several things are very noticeable: 1. How quick 10 years have been, almost like the blink of an eye.

2. That the quality has improved 100-fold over these years 3. How certain countries do well in a year then, well let’s say “not so well” the next, then bounce back again and excel in the quality of entries submitted 4. How good quality-conscious companies can win at least one gold year-on- year, if not more.

5. The growth of digital and how it is firmly a part of our industry, and will only continue to grow over the coming years 6. The Platinum and Gold Sponsors still take this event extremely seriously, knowing that they have played a major role in driving print quality here in Asia.

7. Last but not least, how my Print Awards suit is shrinking more and more each year, at least that’s my way of looking at it.

This year we welcomed two new faces from Thailand and Hongkong to the judging team, who joined with the other experienced judges. They tell me this year’s quality in certain categories was the best they have ever seen. I would like to thank all judges for their time and effort to sit council over all the entries that have to look at to finally award Gold, Silver and Bronze.

One area after 10 years we at the Asian Print Awards are very proud about (like with the Thai Print Awards), we are still 100% independent; in terms we do not have ANY influence from manufacturers on who wins, and who loses. We are in a lock-down situation whilst judging is in progress and no outside interjection is possible. All the judges we have are either from education institutions, consultants or print users. We are firm and will continue to stand by this in the future growth of the Asian Print Awards.

To ALL the winners of the 2012 Asian Print Awards, a very big CONGRATULATIONS, from all the sponsors, judges, and everyone here tonight and who will read and look at this catalogue in many months to come. You have beaten many, many, many companies to be here to collect your award, or in some cases awards! As I say every year, come back and try again for the 2013 event, I guarantee you it will be even harder, if that’s at all possible.

We also have some surprises for next years events, which hopefully we even further cement the Asian Print Awards as the only regional event of its kind here in Asia. So tonight is your night, congratulations! Go tell ALL your customers and prospects you have won an award in Asia‘s most prestigious event. Market this, advertise this, use it to its full advantage!

Also a big thank you to all the companies that have supported us on the last 10-year journey. We have made a big difference to the way companies produce print here.

Now, looking back 10 years ago, and now, it really is chalk and cheese, nothing to compare. Asia produces some of the best print in the world, what ever process, and we have to maintain this lead over other markets to ensure that print here in Asia will never die.

Adjudication 2012

The independent judges considered each entry for print quality and awarded on the standard of the samples submitted.

The judging panel has no knowledge of the actual entrants as this information was not supplied with the sample.

Brief to the judges The objective of the Asian Print Awards is: “To raise the standard and promote the achievements in excellence of Asian printing.�

Criteria for judging Each entry will be evaluated for print quality. Judging is based on excellence of print quality achieved. The

submitted sample will be assumed to be representative of the total run.

The objective of the judging should be to award no more than one Gold, Silver and Bronze award in a single category.

However, there will be occasions where because of the variations in the dimension (whether creative, budget or degree of difficulty) of the entries within the category, more than one award will be appropriate.

There will be occasions where entries are considered to be below achievable standards and awards (either gold, silver or bronze) should not be made.

2012 Judges’ Report How time flies, it seems like yesterday that we judged the first Asian Print Awards and now we have just completed our tenth!

Outdoor, Large-Format and Signage: Outstanding visual concepts in this first time category.

The Industry has changed dramatically during that time and the awards have also changed. Some categories have been eliminated and new ones introduced in the rapidly- expanding Digital print area.

It was extremely pleasing to note that this year’s SelfPromotion Category was exceptional and just what the judges have been looking for.

The one constant is the main Judging criteria of these awards - Excellence in Print. Our Judging Panel consist of 10 International print professionals from Australia, Belgium, China, England, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Five members of the panel plus the Chairman were from outside the region thus ensuring the independence and credibility of the judging process. Each Judge is known and respected for their individual industry knowledge design, prepress, substrates, consumables , various sections of print plus print finishing, and we are fortunate to have a good blend of youth & maturity.

The Panel worked diligently over 3 ½ days and it was evident that many companies had completed quality checks prior to submission as the overall standard of the 2012 entries was excellent.

Each entry is numbered & the Judges do not have access to entrant information. Following extensive deliberation finalists are selected then each individual judge votes for their choice and the Chairman calculates the score to determine the eventual medalists.

As we celebrate our 10th Anniversary, the Awards Management can be very proud of their achievements. The spread of quality entries from a wide range of countries proved that the competition has been embraced by the region and these results support their belief that the awards help to improve and promote print in Asia.

My sincere thanks goes to all members of the Independent Judging Team for a job well done.

Special thanks to Robert James & Major Wong for their participation, support and friendship during the past 10 years. Thanks also to Rod Urquhart whose vast industry knowledge has been extremely beneficial to us all during the first nine years. Unfortunately he could not participate this year due to ill health.
