We are Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and South Lincolnshire (CPSL) Mind, a valuesbased, mental health charity. We are a highly collaborative organisation, providing a range of strengths-based services and projects to support recovery from mental health problems and promote positive mental health across our diverse communities.

We value the individual skills, talents and lived experience that everyone brings to CPSL Mind - and co-production plays a key part in everything we do.

CEO Introduction

On reflection...

With COVID-19 as a backdrop, flexibility and collaboration were the hallmarks of 2020-2021.

Collaboration has underpinned much of our work this year:

While challenging for everyone involved with CPSL Mind, the commitment, team-work and creativity demonstrated across our organisation is a huge source of pride and, we believe, demonstrates significant organisational resilience.

We are very proud of our staff and volunteers for their commitment and dedication to providing services in the best way possible in extraordinary circumstances.

• With Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation Trust (CPFT) we delivered the peer support element of the new community mental health transformation Personality Disorder activity in Peterborough.

• As part of the ‘Fullscope’ consortium, we continued our work alongside six other local charities committed to improving the wellbeing of children and young people in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Not only did our existing services adapt rapidly to maintain high quality support, but we also worked with others across both the statutory and voluntary sectors to provide innovative new projects and services in response to unmet need.

• We worked in partnership with Cambridgebased charity Lifecraft – and many other community-based organisations – to support the extension of Lifecraft’s vital Lifeline telephone service during lockdown.

Co-producing services alongside those with lived experience of mental health issues – and other key stakeholders across our communities – has continued to be a priority across CPSL Mind and has been key to ensuring quality, increasing our reach and maximising impact. Hence our pride and delight at receiving two national Mind network engagement and participation awards during 2020.

• With local Muslim mental health organisation The Lantern Initiative, we secured funding for a ground-breaking perinatal project for Muslim mums in Peterborough.

• We completed a comprehensive, independent consultation with mental health service stakeholders across South Lincolnshire, with a view to responding collaboratively to unmet needs.

And, remarkably given the circumstances, this has been a year in which we have extended our reach.

Our Good Life Service has provided a growing range of vital support across our communities; we upskilled new groups and individuals with focused training and workshops during lockdown and we reached thousands more local people with new elements of our STOP Suicide campaign.

This year has also seen us clarifying our thinking with regards to priorities for our new organisational strategy 2022-25, which will be launched at our AGM in March 2022. This will take our previous co-produced strategy to the ‘next level’ with a clear focus on inclusion, innovation and influence; while also acknowledging the role we all have in responding to the Climate Emergency.

From the Chair As we gradually emerge from the pandemic experience, health inequalities have never been clearer – and doing something about them never felt more urgent.

Our experience during 2020/21 has come with considerable learning for us as an organisation, which informs our thinking for the future. While we have much to be proud of, we also know that we still have some way to go before we can claim to be truly representative of our diverse communities.

This year has made us all too aware of both the importance of nature to our wellbeing and the frightening reality of the impact of Climate Emergency on our environment. Consequently, we are very mindful of the moral imperative for all organisations to consider their carbon footprint and this will be an embedded priority as we look to the future.

Hence our decision to put equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) at the very heart of our new organisational strategy – 2022 to 2025.

We have been actively recruiting to our Board of Trustees and have appointed a Head of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Engagement to the Senior Leadership Team, with a view to better reflecting the communities we serve.

Once again, the achievements of the past year are remarkable against a most challenging backdrop.

I would like to add my appreciation to the whole organisation, leadership team, staff, volunteers and trustee colleagues alike.

Supporting New Mums

Starting Well The Starting Well project responds to the mental health and wellbeing needs of pregnant women and new mums from the Muslim community of Peterborough. It will deliver a new communitybased perinatal service that has been designed with Muslim mums for Muslim mums.

We have focused on learning more about the day to day lives of the interviewees; their hopes and aspirations, their mental health experiences during the perinatal period and how they manage their wellbeing.

Insights from this detailed research, such as the quotes below, have helped us to start shaping and testing out the new service, with a view to then making it available on a larger scale.

This is a two-year collaboration with The Lantern Initiative and other local community partners who work within Peterborough’s Muslim communities.

Beginning with Mind’s person-centred service design methodology, eight specially recruited Peer Designers have undertaken in-depth, ethnographic interviews to hear the individual stories from 24 Muslim mums; what’s important to them and what impacts on their wellbeing.

“ I didn’t go to any

antenatal or baby groups as I was worried I would be out of place and my husband was overprotective initially as we were new to the country. ”

“ I had previously experienced racism and this made me reluctant to go to new places/groups. ”

University Good Life

Connecting university students Through the delivery of online Good Mood Cafes, Open Door calm spaces and information sessions, we successfully facilitated social connection, developed circles of support, shared self-help techniques and improved wellbeing. Students were highly engaged in the project, even producing the featured video to encourage others to join the sessions.

Xiaomeng Zhang, an international student at the University of Cambridge, said, The challenges of the past year fundamentally changed the ‘university experience’ for students everywhere. Studying from home and unable to connect with each other in traditional ways, there were concerns about students feeling isolated and their wellbeing being negatively affected.

In partnership with Anglia Ruskin University, the University of Cambridge, the Cantab and Cam Medical Primary Care Network and local GPs, our University Good Life Project provided necessary support.

“ I still remember when I first attended the service, I was amazed by their generosity and enthusiasm.

I now feel extremely cheerful, as I had not been enjoying group conversation for a long time. ” After a successful first year, the project continues to develop in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University with a view to delivering a mixture of online and face-to-face support moving forwards.

Community Services

Our Community Personality Disorder Service Our Community Personality Disorder Service provides the peer support element of the new Personality Disorder pathway that has been developed as part of the NHS Community Mental Health Transformation project (Exemplar) in Peterborough.

Learnings will help shape similar services across Cambridgeshire.

Working alongside Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT), our Peer Support Workers have been co-delivering Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills groups with CPFT colleagues and facilitating peer support groups at which individuals can come together for mutual support.

Feedback from attendees has been positive, including from Justin who comments:

“ The service feels like an

overwhelming big hug from everyone. I think it’s brilliant and if I could tell every single person about it I would! ”

The aim of this collaborative approach is to provide more holistic support for individuals who self-identify as living with personality disorder 6

Discharge Buddy Service

Our Discharge Buddy Service Being discharged from an in-patient stay or mental health crisis intervention services can be a daunting prospect and it was with this in mind that we launched our new Discharge Buddy Service.

Creating dynamic safety and wellbeing plans together cements a sustainable approach in which individuals can continue their progress at the end of this support.

Working alongside Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT), this service provides short term additional support to individuals leaving hospital or crisis services, pairing them with one of our trained ‘Discharge Buddies’.

Those accessing this service are also gifted a ‘Comfort Kit’ which was developed by individuals with lived experience of mental health crisis and includes a range of self-care resources.

Buddies provide person-centred social, emotional and practical support with the aim of improving the individual’s wellbeing, building resilience and preventing future mental health crises.

STOP Suicide

Suicide prevention trailblazers One individual subsequently shared this film with their local men’s football team and commented:

Our STOP Suicide campaign delivered two more impactful initiatives this year as part of the multi-agency NHS-funded suicide prevention ‘Trailblazer’ programme across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

“ I’m so pleased that the team now have an open supportive place for talking about mental health. ”

Our focus was on getting the STOP Suicide message out to local men and, in particular, members of our local Eastern European community.

Campaign messages were developed alongside local men with lived experience of suicidal thoughts or of supporting other men at risk of suicide.

STOP Suicide has also supported local men’s groups with grants of up to £500, leaving a legacy of spaces for men to have open conversations.

The campaign successfully engaged with tens of thousands of people across our community.

A key component was our STOP Suicide men’s film which shared a real conversation between two of our ‘Campaign Makers’ about their lived experience with suicidal thoughts.

Good Life Fund

Funding connection Our Good Life Fund launched this year and, despite the pandemic, has already supported several new community initiatives to flourish through the award of £500 grants - along with collaboration and guidance from our team. The innovative project aims to leave a legacy of community activities that are underpinned by the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ – Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give.

Utilising outdoor spaces at Ferry Meadows in Peterborough, the group hosted activities involving exercise and music.

The fund has been a catalyst in encouraging local people to take the first steps in engaging with their communities and developing ideas for groups and activities into a reality. Initiatives formed so far include community gardens, craft groups and sporting activities.

Among the successful applicants was Lara, from Peterborough, who was awarded a grant to set up a group to support the wellbeing of local young Black people and their families.

Training

Increasing skills in the workplace Good Mood Cafes were held virtually for local businesses to provide a space for staff to connect and managers were equipped with a ‘Top Tips’ video:

With home-working creating a myriad of potential wellbeing challenges for local employees, we supported multiple organisations to navigate the workplace wellbeing implications of lockdown on their mental health and wellbeing by quickly converting our training to online delivery.

Our Training Team very quickly created new, purpose-designed, online courses, workshops and organisational ‘Good Mood Cafes’ that supported managers and staff during this challenging time – helping individuals to make sense of – and manage – the inevitable roller coaster of emotions that came alongside such uncertainty.

In February 2021, we hosted a breakfast meeting for leaders to talk about the importance of looking after the wellbeing of their staff, as well as their own. This was well received with one attendee commenting:

We also developed a new community training offer in partnership with local charity, Living Sport, to support volunteers and neighbours in helping others understand more about mental health and the local support available during lockdown.

“ It was a safe space to share ideas and concerns. ” 8

Run Everyone!

In Spring 2020, businesses and organisations across our region came together to compete in the virtual ‘Run Everyone’ event. Planned by the organisers of the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon, the challenge encouraged teams to achieve the greatest number of miles while raising money for charity.

Shifties Liveathon

Key Publishing in Stamford assembled a team of seven who completed an impressive 801 miles and raised £675 towards our work. This contributed to the total of £9,000 generated from the event for us at CPSL Mind. A huge thank you to all involved.

St Neots entrepreneur Alex Hughes, founder of Shifties, a free networking hub for small business owners, hosted a 24-hour ‘Speak Up Liveathon’ event on Monday 18th January.

The online event supported local business owners and entrepreneurs through discussions about mental health and wellbeing, while also raising more than £5,000 towards our work.

Virtual challenges were a big part of 2020 and we even launched a ‘Virtual Fundraising Guide’ to help our supporters in their efforts. One group of local people who took up the challenge were Team Hakka Moy – a four runner team who ran a marathon around Rutland Water to replicate the Virgin Money London Marathon, which was cancelled.

Alex says,

“ It is clear from all the comments and engagement that this discussion has resonated with many and I hope it has encouraged more people to speak up and seek help. ”

The team raised an amazing £3,685.44 for our work and Lucy, one of the runners, said,

“ We chose CPSL Mind as everyone in
