A Letter from our Culture Chair

When I was writing the script for this year’s PACN,

I could have never imagined standing on this stage

about to present it to this lovely group of family and

friends that are before me. It was all too surreal. But

here we are, in that surreal moment now, all

immersed and awaiting Cal Poly Pomona Barkada’s 32nd Annual Pilipinx-American Culture Night.

Conceptually “Magkita Tayo Muli’’ or its English translation of “Let’s Meet Again” was a theme that I cognizantly wanted to address. People go from being prevalent in each other’s lives to gravitatiating and advancing down different paths that cause them to separat e but even when leading those different paths, each person is remembering one another and hoping to one day meet the other again. It’s the thought of missing someone, but the wishful thinking that you will meet them again. When reflecting on this phenomena, I believe that we can all think for a moment about someone we would like to tell “Magkita Tayo Muli” or “Let’s Meet Again.”

After sharing a space with PACN Board and creating memories over this production season, I know I can say that looking ahead, I hope that I have a chance to meet you all again. PACN Board, you genuinely were the backbone of this production. All the way from your hard work on restless nights to the little things like the warm smiles you brought to practice, you all made this possible.

To the actors, thank you for bringing my vision of the script to life and making it a reality while also making it your own. Working with each and every one of you has been an absolute dream and honor. You should all be immensely proud of yourselves. You are all beautiful, creative beings and I am thankful that I got the opportunity to get to know you all this PACN season. Thank you for making the production of “Magkita Tayo Muli” truly unforgettable.

To Robechelle, you will always have a special place in my heart. This might seem like a BECC-Culture cliche to say, but I would not have wanted to do this with anyone else and I genuinely mean that. A Letter from our BECC Magandang gabi po sa iyong lahat :) Welcome to Cal Poly Pomona Barkada’s 32nd Annual Pilipino American Culture Night (PACN)! My name is Robechelle Mina and it has been an honor to be your Barkada Entertainment Company Coordinator for the 2021-2022 school year.

As a first year, PACN was one of the events where I truly felt I was able to get to know the people around me while at the same time learn more about my culture through performing arts.

Unfortunately, when the COVID-19 pandemic suspended all PACN practices and the show was moved to an online showcase, we were not able to see the full potential of the show we were creating together.

This year our PACN is titled “Magkita Tayo Muli,” which translates to “let’s meet again.” As we are shifting into a post-pandemic lifestyle, we are reuniting with our family, friends, and loved ones. And after two years of the online college experience, we are super excited to be holding this year’s PACN on stage in front of you all.

Whether our members joined the club to make new friends or find a safe space for them to be themselves, in the end PACN has brought everyone together to celebrate the beauty of Filipino culture. These past two months, I have watched the whole cast and crew dedicate their time and energy into making the show as amazing as it will be today. Although it wasn’t easy transitioning back to in-person practices, we are standing here today as the product of our hardwork and dedication. Through singing, dancing, or even acting, everyone has embodied the spirit of what PACN is about.

With that being said, I’d like to give a special thank you to our PACN 32 Cast & Crew for being a part of this crazy ride.

Performing with everyone and getting to know each of you better throughout the season has made this PACN even more memorable and words cannot describe how much you all mean to me. Thank you to the Dance Coordinators for putting together the amazing performances on the stage. Thank you Vision Team for everything you do.

Last, but not least a big thank you to the Culture Chair to my BECC, Ethereal Violet Reyes. I know coming into our term we were both nervous about how the year would play out, but I cannot imagine planning this PACN with anyone else.

You’ve been there for me this whole term and I appreciate you so much.

Some final shout-outs: I would like to thank my family for your endless support throughout my college. Thank you to my ading Alyssa, grand Kyle, gg Kaila, and the rest of Duckline for supporting me throughout the school year. Good evening everyone and welcome to Cal Poly Pomona Barkada’s 32nd annual Pilipino-American Culture Night!

My name is Robert Aceret and it is my honor to stand

before you tonight as one of Barkada’s Co-Presidents for the 2021-2022 executive board, Fantas-E Board.

For 42 years, Barkada has aimed to spread Pilipino Culture

to our members and the surrounding communities because Pilipinos and Pilipinx-Americans are under represented.

Our Pilipino-American Culture Night is how we choose to

proudly celebrate our culture through traditional Pilipino

dances while sharing stories that represent the lives and hardships of Pilipinx-Americans.

It’s hard to believe that the birth of this production originated from a

simple online Discord meeting that took place nearly a year ago. This

student-led production headed by Ethereal Violet Reyes, our Culture

Chair, and Robechelle Mina, our Barkada Entertainment Company

Coordinator, is a testament to their drive, strength and passion.

Both of themhave grown so much this messy year. They have worked

tirelessly, dedicating long nights alongside the cast and crew to make this show

possible. I am lucky to have been able to see it happen every step of the way.

Tonight’s story “Magkito Tayo Muli” is one that resonates with all of us. Its themes center around family, love, the rediscovery and appreciation of one’s roots and the courage it takes to make peace with the past no matter what pain it may hold. For the past two years, Barkada, just like all of you here tonight, has persevered through the COVID-19 pandemic. We are rediscovering and redefining how we live our lives in an ever changing world, slowly but surely moving past regrets alongside the ones we love.

At the start of the year, my executive board chose to derive our name from the word “fantasy”. A name chosen to represent the challenges of the year ahead, and the unrelenting drive to realize the dream of us all being together in person once again.

Looking at you all here tonight after these past months having experienced the challenges and successes Barkada has faced together, I can truly say that we have achieved that “fantasy”.

To the cast and crew of Magkito Tayo Muli, thank you for all your time and taking this journey together with us. After months of hard work balancing academics, your own social lives, and this production, you have finally made it. Perform your hearts out together, take in every second, and you will never have regrets. It's time for you to take center stage. I love you all so much. You all are the reasons why this “fantasy” has come to life.

To Fantas-E Board, the ones who led this "fantasy", we've achieved so much together. There were challenges at every corner but you rose to the occasion, fighting against the odds. I love y'all. You are my inspiration. And to Alex, my fellow Co-President. Words can't describe how grateful I am for you for being willing to step into the role of Co-President with me. If not for you, I would have been a mess. I am truly lucky to have you in my life. Thank you for everything you do.

ur Co-Presidents Good Evening and Welcome to Cal Poly Pomona Barkada’s 32nd annual Pilipino - American Culture Night! My name is Alexandra Manzon and I have had the pleasure to serve as one of Barkada’s Co-Presidents of the 2021-2022 executive board.

This year, our PACN is entitled, ‘Magkita Tayo Muli’, which means ‘Until we meet again’. This is our first in-person show since we entered the pandemic.

And I am beyond excited for you all to see the hard work our cast and crew have put in throughout the year.

Barkada means ‘a group of friends’ and has been aiming to spread Pilipino culture for 42 years since it was founded.

This organization is held on four pillars, which are Social, Athletics, Culture and Academics. Barkada has then adopted Pilipino American Culture Nights to give Pilipino - American students an outlet for issues we face today along with singing and dancing.

As many may know, I joined this year’s executive board at the beginning of the second semester. I was lucky enough, out of all the infinite possibilities in the world, to end up getting to join Fantas-E Board. It was of great responsibility and have been honored to serve alongside these hardworking individuals.

To the cast, this is your night. It was great seeing you all bond with each other on these long nights and creating the memories that decades of members have been doing so before you. Please cherish everyone you meet and everything you experience. Thank you for joining and continuing on the legacy. Thank you to Barkada Alumni for the guidance and support.

To Fantas-E Board, your resilience to finish the year strong is inspiring, thank you for letting me work with you all, keep being the outspoken and confident people you are, muffin ma’am out.

SYNOPSIS Rose Evangelista, a CEO and woman powerboss who normally has everything in control, is turned for a spin when she accidentally takes a flight to her hometown of Manila where her estranged family lives.

played by Audrea Dayapera Rose is a young business woman who is goal-oriented and creative. She comes off as intimidating, shallow and materialistic to those around her because of the success she has reached at a young age, being CEO of a prestigious fashion company but she has a heart of gold. Despite her difficult past, Rose does not admit she has been hurt and pushes her past away.

Tita Kay

played by Yssabelle Valencia Tita Kay is an older woman who was born and raised in the Philippines and cares heavily about family, being the oldest of 3 siblings. Tita Kay is a believer in “tough love” and is known for expressing how she feels in the moment, sometimes hurting those around her. Tita Kay was responsible for caring for her siblings from a young age due to the fact that she was the oldest. Despite her harsh outlook on the world, like any tita, she loves having fun and enjoying time with her family.

Alice Ramos

played by Riann Maria Lourdes S. Galvez Alice is a bubbly woman in her mid 20’s. She is a free-spirited person who loves her family and creative expression. Alice is optimistic and always sees the good in things and believes that nothing is ever too late to fix. Alice is Rose’s assistant of 2 years and cares deeply for Rose and making sure that she is always okay. Alice is a giving person and prioritizes others over herself, often putting her own feelings on the back end to prioritize others. Alice gives great advice and is known for being “real” with people.

played by Isaiah Pagdanganan Tito Bun is a silly, fun loving older man. Tito Bun is a very caring person and believes that everyone deserves to be treated fairly, even if they make mistakes. He is easily forgiving and is a compassionate empath whose biggest mission is to stand up for the underdogs in scenarios at any given chance.

Tito Bun is the youngest of the 3 siblings among Tita Kay and Rose’s mom.

Joseph

played by Rei Jairus David Joseph is a timid, yet naturally creative boy who loves channeling himself through performances. Although he is not the most popular kid in his class, Joseph tries to maintain an optimistic yet realistic view of the world around him. Joseph’s biggest struggle is letting others shine over himself, regardless of the true talents that he possesses. among Tita Kay and Rose’s mom.

Katie

Katie is a feisty young girl, who has lived in the shadow of Rose her whole life. Although she reflects herself as mean and heartless, Katie deepdown has internal struggles and is insecure. She is genuinely kind and understanding but doesn’t want to show weakness and therefore portrays herself as mean as a coping mechanism. Katie is the younger sister of Joseph and both Joseph and Katie’s parents are deceased, leaving Tita Kay, their godmother to care for them. among Tita Kay and Rose’s mom.

Seth

played by Nathan Angelo Loredo Seth is a young man and is the caretaker of Tita Kay, Joseph and Katie. Seth has a good heart and loves caring for others. Seth has a deep understanding of a variety of cultures and is deeply in touch with his roots in the Philippines. He is the honest kuya who will tell things like they are rather than sugar coat.

Mr. Pogi

played by Rommel Alcantara Mr. Pogi is an older Filipino man who is handsome, clever and witty. Mr. Pogi is a fully fun and eccentric character - he is a longtime friend of Rose and is the talk show host of the Pogi Show.

TSA Officer

played by Tommy Mendoza The TSA officer is a comedic character who is sassy and puts Rose in her place within the story.

The TSA officer is a fair person who works a hard job and therefore does not appreciate people who try to bend the rules in favor of themselves.

ESKRIMA |

Eskrima, also known as Arnis or Kali, is the national sport and martial art of the Philippines. The martial art involves fighting sticks, knives, bladed weaons, and even unarmed combat. The art evolved during the Spanish occupation, as a technique was passed down in secret, and often disguised as dances.

MARIA CLARA | La Jota Moncadena & Mantones de Seda coordinated by Kyle Camba Balmonte, Adrian Manila & Daniella Nicomedes

La Jota Moncadena was an adaptation from an old Spanish dance. It encompasses both Spanish and Ilocano dance steps while Spanish music and castanets play in the background.

Adding on, La Jota is known for its interpretation of the Aragonese Jota dance. La Jota is called differently by the people of Moncadena and Tarlac with the name being La Jota Florana. This dance is typically performed during celebration, but a dignified version of this dance is performed during funerals.

The Mantones de Seda is a courtship dance that involves use of shawls, or mantones. The dance starts slowly, with one woman gracefully gliding across the stage, using her manton to entice the men. Once the rest of the women enter, the dance breaks outs into a lively place.

MINDINAO | Burong Talo coordinated by Gabriel Oliver

From the Sulu region, Burong Talo combines both dancing a form of martial arts by the Tausug tribe. Performers demonstrate a battle between hawk and a cat. With their acrobatic movements and tough facial expressions, this dance is highlighted with the accompanying energetic beat of drums and gongs.

General characteristics of this dance are wide stances, while also being light on the feet to emphasize the strength of the martial arts. Commonly used props are almost always a dagger and a fan. Dancers will partner up halfway through the fight and "battle" one another, resolving in a final act of mounting (climbing on top of the other dancer) and dancing with the fans out.

TINIKLING |

Tinikling originates from Leyte on the Visayan Islands during the Spanish occupation in the Philippines. The name tinikling came from the long-legged bird called the tikling. Tinikling is meant to imitate the movements of the bird as it avoids bamboo traps set by Filipino farmers on ricefields.

Many people believe that this dance originated during Spanish colonial rule, when indigenous laborers were ordered to stand in between bamboo poles that were clapped together on their feet as punishment for working too slowly or disobeying orders. Filipino natives would react by jumping when the bamboo poles were about to be clapped.

MANILA SWING |

Swing dancing began within the African American community between the 1920s 1930s and spread beyond in different variations and styles afterwards. Following a fun and upbeat tempo, each style has its own distinct steps. Hallmarks of the dance remain improvisation and free spiritedness which is why swing dancing is still a popular form of social dancing. The variation of swing dance showcased tonight is Manila Swing, a branch of swing that was developed in the Philippines, incorporated with East Coast style stunts.

The Modern suite takes you on an adventure of conquering fears and achieving goals as the variety of tempos express the difficulty and hardships in life. However, no one is ever alone. This dance helps remind people that going through life with your best friends make the most of it.

PACN Histor When I was first approached to head photography for PACN XXXII, I was hesitant at first. I was scared that I couldn’t do the show justice like it deserved. Having gone through now, I couldn’t have been more happy to take the opportunity. For all the frantic shoots through run-throughs, late night photo-editing sessions and hours of hard work, I’d never take it back. Magkito Tayo Muli means solace to me and I hope you all find something to take away from tonight as well.

To Barkada, thanks for reconnecting me to a culture I thought I had lost in translation. For helping me find good people and good things in places I’d never think to look. To the homies back home and in the crowd tonight, thanks for coming out and allowing me to show y’all what I haven’t been able to shut up about for the past two months. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. To my family, thanks for the luv and for teaching me kindness.

For showing me when we think we have nothing, we still have each other. And lastly, to the people with whom warm goodbyes had been exchanged so long ago, thank you for everything we had. For even though I sometimes wished for more, all the time we spent together was time enough. You all mean so much to me. I would close with a goodbye but I think “let’s meet again” suffices just as well.

Hello hello!

My name is Sarah Lazaro, but most of you know me as Lazer. I am grateful and so honored to be the Graphic Designer/Programs and Promotions Head for PACN, and especially this PACN, Magkita Tayo Muli. PACN has always had a special place in my heart. It was the first time ever that I felt one with my culture, and the memories I’ve made through each one I’ve participated in are like no other. Although it was unfortunate we could not hold live performances these past two years due to COVID-19, I am continuously in awe by Barkada’s perseverance to keep the tradition alive and hold the previous two PACNs via Zoom and a drive-in movie; all of which has led us here to meet in-person to make new memories once again for PACN XXXII, Magkita Tayo Muli.

I would like to give a special thanks to Ethereal and Robechelle for entrusting me with this job and being super understanding and patient with me during the process of creating this program. My shout outs are to Jayvin, Cabe, Riann, EK, Jalen and Edward for making me laugh and smile this entire PACN season, all my friends and homies in Cal Poly Pomona’s art department (@artdepartment13 on ig) for always rooting and helping me learn new skills, and to you who is reading this.
