EMBERS SPOTLIGHT M O

n Wednesday, January 30, after PACN Orientation, Michael Belicano, Carissa Cespedes, and I met up in front of the IKEA in Covina. Unfortunately for us, the store was closed. However, Carissa noticed a mysterious light shining through the windows. The next thing we knew, we were in Tokyo Disneyland.

Ignoring our situation, I took this opportunity to interview them for the Spotlight Members section of the Anong Balita Magazine.

Let’s start with introductions. What are your names, years, and majors?

Carissa Cespedes: My name is Carissa Cespedes and I am a first year Psychology major.

Michael Belicano: My name is Michael Belicano. I’m a first year Computer Science major.

Roderic Suarez: And I’m Roderic Suarez, third year graphic design major. Nice to meet you both.

So, tell me about yourselves. What are your favorite hobbies?

M: First, I suck at singing but I love randomly bursting out into song. So,

if you find me annoying cause I sing randomly and terribly, then too bad. I kind of play the guitar and piano. Music is life to me. Video games are a great way to pass my time when I’m bored for the most part. If you’re a gamer, we’re gonna get along just fine. I love watching YouTube videos, Redditing, laughing at memes— R: Um, Michael— M: Anything comedic, throw them at me! I’m bilingual, eighteen, live in West Covina and went to West Covina High School. Got a Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, and Pinterest? Add me.

R: Alright, how about—

M: Did I mention how much I love food?

Should’ve said it first. If you go to any food, smoothie, [or] boba place without taking me, you’re most definitely gonna get a big TFTI from me! Done, sorry.

R: Alright, cool. So, how about you Carissa? Any hobbies?

C: My favorite hobby is making new memories. I know it sounds cliche but I love putting myself out there and making new memories. I love any time with friends because we could be doing absolutely anything and I would love it.

R: Nice, thank you for the short reply.

C: No problem!

M: Sorry…

Do you know each other? Tell us one thing you like about the other person.

C: Michael is always smiling and he likes to joke around a lot.

M: To be honest not a lot! Hopefully we can change that. She does seem freespirited and friendly which is what I like about her. Oh and she also got the lead!

Outside Barkada, what else are you involved with? Tell us a little bit about it.

C: I am also in VSA. I do choir and have a Big in that club too. They are welcoming and I love them like family as well.

M: I’m involved in clubs such as Society of Hispanics in Science and Engineering (SHSE), SWIFT, and a program called Maximizing Engineering Potential. The titles pretty much explain themselves.

Ask me about them! I’m also part of the Kellogg Chamber Singers on campus, which is the 24-man choir that sings songs. Yeah, nothing too special — other than the fact that the maker of freaking Froot Loops is in our choir name!

What is your favorite memory with Barkada?

C: My favorite Barkada memory was meeting my Big. My Kuya Sean is amazing and I am so glad to have him as my Kuya.

M: My favorite memory with Barkada would definitely be Friendship Games since it really changed me as a person and my perspective towards this club. I was really quiet and I was too afraid to talk to anyone the first time I went to the API [Student Center]. Hype Nights and Friendship Games showed me how everyone is so close in this club and that [no matter how] silly you act, do things, etc. — at the end of the day, we are still a family that will always make fun of each other in a special way. I also liked the concept of acting like nobody gives a damn which pretty much carried on for me behavior-wise, granted that I was super quiet before — still kinda am.

What was your favorite event with Barkada so far and why?

C: My favorite event was Friendship Games because that was when I first realized how big the club was. Rolling out before the crack of dawn just to show pride with other schools was an amazing experience. I loved how family seemed reunited there — I know mine was because I got to see my cousin who goes to school all the way in San Fransisco M: My favorite event would be BGT. It was really inspirational and mind boggling to see all these people within the club have such talent. It really puts your mind in a different perspective. Even though I forgot my lyrics when I was performing, it wasn’t that big of a deal. Plus I was able to perform five times which was super fun.

What are you looking forward to the most this year with Barkada?

C: I am looking forward to performing our play!

M: PACN, yes!

C: I am SO excited! All of high school I wanted to act but I never put myself out there enough or had someone to give me the push to do it. When I got the role I was

so excited and I couldn’t wait to perform. I am nervous as well… But I know that my mentors will help me get through and I’ll make bonds with people that will last me a lifetime.

M: I can’t wait to learn all the dances that my culture has to offer. Within my eleven years of living in the Philippines I’ve never been too exposed to traditional Filipino dances. I find this as a great opportunity to embrace my culture further than the fact that I know Tagalog. I also can’t wait to see the progress and what the whole cast and crew can offer at Citrus on May 3!

Few Good Men… Out There (I do not wish to defend men but to shed an opinion on an current stereotypical issue between men and women).

“Men are jerks”, says a girl as she sobs and curses at the wind. You might be familiar with this scene in movies, or sometimes even in reality. Usually, this scenario happens after a woman gets cheated on by his partner or simply after a bad break-up with their boyfriend. After suffering in a bad relationship, women tend to lose hope on finding their “prince charming” and claim that “all” men are jerks. They form this emotional wall and promise themselves not to love another man.

This mentality is not acceptable, because even though one man has torn your heart apart, you still have a chance of finding a great, honest, faithful, and caring man.

I like surfing through social networking sites and I see random posts and comments of women on the sites. I see their rants about men, how every single one of us are jerks. Men are attacked by movies, stereotypical comics, and novels. In

movies where they portray men as antagonists, like the movie “He’s Just Not That into You”, Bradley Cooper’s character cheats on his wife. Although there are some movies where they portray women as the source of men’s agony like the movie 500 days of summer, most of the novels and movies nowadays are focused on men. This plays a big role on the image of men in the world. Most women would prefer to watch these Drama movies and read these Romantic Tragedy novels and impacts the good side of men. This leads also to generalization. Some women quickly judge that every single man in this world is a jerk and they will never find the right guy for them. I argue not, and I think they are just looking at the wrong places and talking to the wrong men. So what if you few good-looking men have been caught cheating? It does not mean every good-looking man will cheat on every woman they get in a romantic relationship with.

It is wrong for women to judge and say that men always act stupid and men always make the wrong choices. Although some of their arguments based on their personal experiences are true and these experiences show that men are jerks, they should not assume that every single man is automatically a jerk. I have seen a lot of scenarios were the girl likes a guy who keeps hurting her, but the other guy that is always there for her

is being ignored because she thinks he is not good looking. In this scenario, it is clear that the girl should leave the one who is hurting her feelings, and start realizing that the other guy who is always there for her will treat her better. These events are clear evidence that it is not always the guy’s fault that a relationship does not work.

Also do remember that this is my opinion and majority of men that I have observed have shown acts mentioned above. There are still few good men out there that values chivalry, faith, and respect. I cannot mention anyone that is a great example of this kind of man but I am sure that any women can find a good man that meets these measures as long as they play their cards right. We also learn from mistakes that’s why we date a lot of times. This writing is not made to create a very good impression for the writer nor to defend men in the world but to simply argue that if you do look for the right guy, observe the guy you have found, and take dating slow, you have a bigger chance to find the right prince charming for you. Let us not fall in the population who generalizes men and women, let us be wise, and always think twice, and like what they all say.

Let us not judge the book by its cover nor by the comments of others towards it, read it for yourself and it might be the one for you.

Barkada’s Go On January 10th, Barkada kicked off the start of winter quarter with the 6th annual Barkada’s Got Talent. The event’s performers put shows like America’s Got Talent and The X Factor to shame, making it a memorable night full of great entertainment and laughter. To find out more on what both the performers and an audience member thought, I asked Lydia Lei and Kathleen Q: How many performances were you in at this Trinidad what they thought year’s show?

A: I was in three performances: I had a set with about the show!

Kay and Michael and I also performed with P. Notes and Project Obvious.

Q: What made you want to perform?

A: For the past few years, I’ve taken every chance I could to perform because I don’t get to do it often. I was actually considering not performing in BGT this year, but everyone was telling me I should. I guess I decided I would do it when I knew I didn’t have to be alone. Thanks Michael and Kay! Q: What were you most nervous about?

A: I think I was the most nervous for the Project Obvious set. I was afraid I would mess up, especially in the front row, because I always mess up when I dance in front of people.

Q: What was your favorite part of the show?

A: My favorite part of the show was Guapo Naman!

They were really entertaining and I got to watch my kuya dance!

Q: What performance were you most surprised by?

A: I was most surprised by the E-board video.

I knew that E-board would be showing a video after the intermission, but I mean it was just SO GOOOD. Go E-board!

Q: Would you perform again next year? Why/ Why not?

A: I would perform again next year because I had a lot of fun learning the dances with Project Obvious.

ot Talent2013 Q: What was your favorite part of the show?

A: Watching Project Obvious perform was definitely one of the highlights for me during BGT because I saw how much fun everyone was having just doing what they love. I believe dance is a great form of self-expression, which was evident by the joy, excitement, and genuine passion all the dancers were able to convey to the audience and the audience [showed an] enthusiastic response to Project Obvious. I also cannot forget to mention that the performance also made me laugh out loud with all of those little funny (albeit, slightly inappropriate) dance moves everyone incorporated into the set! I thoroughly enjoyed the set.

Q: What performance were you most surprised by?

A: I think it was because I didn’t hang out with him enough to know he was a great singer but I was absolutely surprised by Nick Busante’s rendition of Maroon 5’s Sunday Morning with Barkada Band!!! I am a huge fan of Maroon 5 and was glad to know he did that song justice. Nick, you have a great voice and kudos to being able to play the piano too! You go, Glen Coco!

Q: What do you want to see at next year’s BGT? I would love to see a little more variety in the performance choices. Don’t get me wrong. I loved seeing what everyone chose to showcase. However, with a group as diverse and unique as Barkada, I believe that there is untapped potential and talent that hasn’t been utilized yet. Someone should venture outside the singing and dancing to show off something new.

It would be great to see someone tackle spoken word and recreate some sort of small scale slam poetry.

BGT never disappoints and I cannot wait until next year’s show!

A: After watching this year’s BGT, does it make you want to perform next year? Why/ why not?

Although I thoroughly enjoyed watching everyone’s performance on the BGT stage, I was reminded of why I would never perform for future shows! First of all, you need to have talent which is something I do not have. Secondly, it takes a special kind of confidence to go on stage and perform for family, friends, and strangers. Unfortunately, I do not have that either. I would rather just admire and show my love for everyone from a distance.
