CULTURE CHAIR 2017

2 PACN's

Victor Heiny

What are you excited about for this years PACN? I’m excited for this year’s PACN, because the story is discussing current issues in the United States and the Philippines. These issues could possibly affect the future of many Pilipinos here in the United States, if not the Pilipino community that coexist with concerns in the Philippines.

Words of encouragement for new people? PACN is an experience you will keep for a lifetime. We you make friendships you would probably have never thought we would be made. I know, because I made some of my most closest friends through PACN. PACN is not just a show, its much more. You learn about your culture while creating a community. A community that supports, teaches, and leads you to become a better you.

What do you believe is needed for a successful PACN? Dedication and passion from the cast is needed to create a memorable, but progression Pilipino-American Culture Night. Without the cast and without the meaning of PACN, PACN would just be a show. PACN brings community together to bring awareness of issues that exist in the Pilipino community. I believe if PACN has a meaning to do something about the issues in the community using community, then success comes full circle.

Pilipino-American Culture Night (PACN) is a production composed of traditional Pilipino folk dances, modern dance and theatrical play. PACN is tradition for many Pilipino rooted organizations all over the nation promoting Pilipino culture through stories involving Pilipinos dances, history and issues in the Pilipino community. As Culture Chair how did you come up with the story for PACN? Growing up, I always wondered why I am Pilipino-American and not just Pilipino. As I grew older, I learned why my family left the Philippines. This made me questioned how would it have been to live in the Philippines. Moving to the US for college, I was able to learn more about my culture and the issues within the community. The trend is to leave the Philippines for more and better opportunities. I wanted create a story of the possibilities of the future of the Philippines and Pilipinos. The possibility to go back home.

If you could have one thing people you would want people to remember about their culture, what would it be? As Pilipinos, we have been shaped by many other cultures causing us to be very unique compared to others. Our uniqueness causes us to question our culture in who we are. I believe we as Pilipinos need to accept our culture for what it is and what it was become. I say this because I am pride to be Pilipino, not just a Pilipino-American but as a Pilipino because American or not I will be always be Pilipino. As a Pilipino it is my duty to care and support other Pilipinos, if its Pilipinos from Germany or Australia. I learned that Pilipinos treat everyone like family even when there is no blood relation, which creates more special bonds.

5 suites: Maria Clara, Kordilyera, Traditionalists, Moro and Rural Modern dance is available to those who do at least one traditional dance

Duclayan What are you excited about for this years PACN? I’m excited about exposing new members to the joys of PACN as well as me and Victor’s vision come to life.

What do you believe is needed for a successful PACN? What I believe is needed for a successful PACN is just knowing that performers and audience alike are able to have better understanding of Pilipinx culture and remember to never forget our roots.

As BEC why did you choose the dances we have for PACN?

Words of encouragement for new people? Not sure if these are necessarily words of encouragement but... Being a part of acting and dancing is something you won’t regret. You will have fun and create many memories with the people surrounding you without a doubt. Just remember to also appreciate the culture that makes up PACN and you will experience something like never before!

Two reasons: 1)They are dances that I would love to participate in myself 2) I believe these dances will help portray the theme that Victor and I have decided on this year.

Maria Clara The maria clara suite consists of spanish influenced dances that captures the elegance and charm of the mestiza Filipina and the gallantry and boldness of the mestizo Filipino.

PATRICK Berrei

Why did you decide to coordinate Maria Clara? I’ve been a part of many PACN’s and I’ve always wanted to do more than just perform in them. Plus Maria Clara is my favorite suite! :D

Tell me your most memorable PACN experience? There was practice on my birthday once, and Miriya and Kevin brought me an Oreo birthday cake which is like my faaaveeee and we shared and the cake with everyone while runthroughs were happening!

Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why? Jota de Paragua is my favorite dance. I love how intricate the movements and formations are. I also really enjoy the music for it.

Why should people learn and join Maria Clara? Maria Clara is fun, and even though it is somewhat difficult, the feeling of getting it all down is very satisfying. It’s also a great way to see how the Filipinos took Western European influences and turned it into something they could call their own. Plus, you get to wear shoes!

What dances are you teaching for Maria Clara? Putritos and Engañosa

ABUBO

Why did you decide to coordinate Maria Clara? I had so much fun with this suite last year, that i wasnt opposed to coordinating it when i was asked.

Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why?

Why should people learn and join Maria Clara?

Besides the blood and sweat that was poured during the tinik practices, Jota Paragua is my number one favorite. Something about castanets and the zapateados completely absorb you into the culture of the time.

Because the dances Patrick and I are teaching this year are super cute! You’ll watch this dance and say “man, i wish i could have done this dance”

Kordilyera

Kordilyera

Cordillera was the name given by the Spanish Conquistadors when they first saw the mountain ranges of Northern Luzon. Meaning “knotted rope, the Spanish term refers to the jumbled rolls and dips of this long mountain range. Living amidst the rice terraces that tower over Northern Luzon are a people whose way of life existed long before any Spaniard or other foreigners stepped foot on the Philippines. Igorot, or Cordillerans, is the collective name of several tribes who inhabit the mountains of Luzon. The Bontoc, Ifugao, Benguet, Apayo, and the Kalinga are some of the tribes that reign over Luzon’s mountain terrain.

KORDILYERA COORDINATOR 2017 1 PACN

JANINE

RAYMUNDO Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why? Tinikling! It was definitely the most challenging dance I did last year. But again, it was worth it. With tinikling, there’s a bit more sense of teamwork compared to the other dances and I enjoyed being able to perform killer choreo with my fellow “Tinik Ka Na Ba” team members!

Why did you decide to coordinate Kordilyera? For many reasons! For starters, I wanted to learn more about the suite itself. Last year, my focus for PACN was mostly acting and tinikling, so I wasn’t able to really focus on the other suites except Kordilyera and Rural. By being a coordinator, not only do I teach the members the choreo for the dances, but I also get to enlighten them on the suite’s history. I get to learn along with my dancers and build relationships with everyone. It’s definitely something that I would consider to be special.

What dances are you teaching for Kordilyera? Lumagen and Uyaoy

Why should people learn Kordilyera? It never hurts to try out new things! And Kordilyera is a great suite to try out. Not only do you get to learn some history and choreo of these cultural dances, but you also get to build strong friendships with everyone along the way. PACN is a show made up of you - the members. Take advantage of your time and consider being a part of something big!

Tell me your most memorable PACN experience? Stepping foot on stage for the first time ever with everyone. At that moment, it became real. From auditions to all the weeks spent practicing outside at the CLA Paseo, we finally made it to the show. It made me realize how much being a part of PACN is absolutely worth it. Seeing others react on being on stage was a priceless memory as well.

KORDILYERA COORDINATOR 2017 6+ PACN's

MICHAEL BELICANO

Why did you decide to coordinate Kordilyera? This was going to be my last year in Barkada, so why not go out and do something that I love and have passion for? I want to give the future generation of Barkada the same opportunities that were given to me during my early stages in the club.

Tell me your most memorable PACN experience? Lost Seconds

Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why? La Jota de Paragua. The color scheme for the costumes were really cool my first year and the moves and atmosphere of the dance was just plain cool.

Why should people learn and join Kordilyera? People should join our suite because it is definitely unique from our current lifestyle as Pilipino-Americans. It is one of the few opportunities that we’ll ever have dancing the dances of the Igorot. I’d like to encourage people to get out of their comfort zone and try out new things, especially OUR culture. I’d like to think of it as paying respect towards our history and how we came to be.

What dances are you teaching for Kordilyera? Lumagen and Uyaoy

Traditionalists Traditional dances derive from many indigenous tribes throughout many regions in the Philippines. Many dances mostly involve folklore, war, celebration, hunting, courtship, imitating living creatures, and worship to their own pagan gods.

TRADITIONALISTS COORDINATOR 2017 1 PACN

ADRIAN MANILA

Why did you decide to coordinate Traditionalists? I was in the traditionalist suite last year. Also, I love the concept of story-telling and how the stories and legends that we perform were passed down from generation to generation. Through these dances, we preserve our culture and they’re just so fun to do!

Tell me your most memorable PACN experience? Triple Mount. Nuff said.

Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why? Moro. Burong Talo. Why? Triple Mount. Nuff said.

Why should people learn and join Traditionalists? People should learn and join Trads because it’s sort of like a mini play within our overall PACN. It’s another story to be told and it’s filled with action, drama, and fun!

What dances are you teaching for Traditionalists? Tagabili

RAMOS

Why did you decide to coordinate Traditionalists? I had a lot of fun dancing Traditional and what more could I want when I’m coordinating alongside my other half of “Your Favorite Pair of Baristas” plus Brandon.

Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why?

Why should people learn and join Traditionalists?

My favorite PACN dance would have to be Tinikling because it was one of the hardest dances and I, along with my fellow stick mates, were able to overcome it and gave 110% on PACN night.

I think people should learn and join our suite because I want people to be able to learn and connect certain pieces of history and myths together.

Tell me your most memorable PACN experience? Climbing that triple mount and successful landing it during the Moro dance

TRADITIONALISTS COORDINATOR 2017 4 PACN's

Brandon Busante

Why did you decide to coordinate Traditionalists? I coordinated dances in my first and second year in pacn and it was fun, so I kind of just came back to it.

Tell me your most memorable PACN experience? Acting my first year. It was the first time I’ve ever acted and it was a new experience that really highlighted my first year in college.

Why should people learn and join Traditionalists?

Because our dance is a little play within the play of PACN. Its super easy to pick up and fun to do.

What dances are you teaching for Traditionalists? Tagabili

Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why?

I can’t really choose one but my favorites are Singkil, Sayaw sa Banko, and SOHTEN. Sayaw is cool cause seeing people dancing on benches is fun to watch and when i watched it(PACN 2013) they stacked up like 6 levels or something. It was pretty crazy(shouts out to Denise and RJ for doing it and not falling off and dying) Singkil, simply put, is beautiful. There are so many components of the dance that make it a truly stage worthy performance. Theres so much going on in beautiful coordination with each other during this dance to convey the story of the princess. Please check it out. SOHTEN. MY BOYS. This is a high energy dance that’s fun to dance(even though i wasn’t in it) Raffia sticks make for a pretty dope flare to compliment it. If you would like to have a conversation about PACN dances I would be delighted. I don’t know too much but I would love to share enthusiasm about them with anyone. HMU :D

Moro

Moro

Moro people refers to the population of Muslims in the Mindanao region of the Philippines . The Bangsamoro were the people who fought against the Spanish in the 16th century. The culture is Malay influenced and the music makes use of the kulintang

CHARLIE REYES

Why did you decide to coordinate Moro? Because I love Moro.

Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why? Being Vinta princess for “We Are” PACN

Tell me your most memorable PACN experience? Vinta, because it’s not everyday you get to dance on sticks!

Why should people learn and join Moro? Because the Moro culture is under-rated and it’s not as advertised as other common Filipino traditions like Tinikling.

What dances are you teaching for Moro? Pagapir and Tauti

MORO COORDINATOR 2017

JEANNETE Canete

Why did you decide to coordinate Moro? This isn’t set in stone, but I’ve thought about making this year’s production the last PACN I participate in. I wanted to coordinate the very first cultural suite I tried.

Why should people learn and join Moro? Much like any suite, each one has dances with such a rich history and meaning behind them. The Moro suite gives insight to the Islamic culture and identity of the Philippines. With Moro, there’s usually an emphasis with rhythm and grace. If you’re looking to unleash your inner sass through easy choreography, you should come check out our practices! (“:

Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why?

Tell me your most memorable PACN experience? There are so many wonderful memories from PACN, well from Barkada in general. It’s hard to pinpoint my most memorable experience because to me, PACN is a culmination of amazing experiences. If you stick around the entire season, I guarantee you’ll understand what I mean.

What dances are you teaching

Hands down, Tinikling. As someone who has only for Moro? Pagapir and Tauti tried it twice, I personally find it to be both rewarding and fun.

Rural Rural suite are the dances of the provinces and the Filipino farm workers. After a hard day’s work, the rural people gather in their barrios and would perform many impromptu and lively dances as a form of relaxation. These dances personify the many joys of work, of the surroundings, and of life among the simple country people.

RURAL COORDINATOR 2017 6+ PACN's

BRYAN

NAGUIT

Why did you decide to coordinate Rural?

Tinikling has been one of my favorite dances since my freshman year of high school when I danced it for the first time. During my junior year, I was able to coordinate the Rural suite and loved how it depicts the simpler, happier side of life in the Philippines. All the dances are so colorful and lively that you can’t help but smile whenever you watch.

Why should people learn and join Rural? Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why? Singkil was actually my favorite dance when Iggy and I coordinated it Dream-E year, mostly because of the story and music. Singkil is an epic dance that portrays the story of Princess Gandingan as she walks through a forest, accompanied by her royal slave carrying an umbrella. They are soon caught in an earthquake caused by diwatas (fairies) of the forest. However, the two gracefully maneuver through the falling trees and powerful winds before the prince finally comes and helps them.

What dances are you teaching for Rural? Itik-Itik, Pandanggo Sa Ilaw/Oasiwas, and Tinikling

RURAL IS SO FUN! Seriously, the dances are so happy and lively and pretty easy to learn to be honest. Itik-Itik is an all-female partner dance that imitates the movements of ducks, while Pandanggo Sa Ilaw involves dancing with candles, mimicking fireflies at dusk. The Tinikling team is already set, but there are workshops and auditions every year in January, so definitely check it out!

Tell me your most memorable PACN experience?

Man, there’s so many to choose from (that’s what happens when you actually go to PACN practice). I would have to choose coordinating the Moro suite my freshman year in Barkada. Particularly, my favorite part was the first time we showcased the climactic part of Singkil. The ongoing, intense clicking of the sticks suddenly stopped, a hush fell over the CLA, and everyone’s attention was on us. Nothing felt more satisfying than seeing everyone’s face in awe as the dance finally started to come together.

RURAL COORDINATOR 2017 4 PACN's

MIRIYA

GUTIERREZ

Why did you decide to coordinate Rural? Because Justin asked me when I was drunk so I said yes. LOL jk. Because I really like the rural suite and PACN. It’s such a fun suite and it’s so happy and joyful.

Tell me your most memorable PACN experience? Oh man, there are too many honestly. One time a rat showed up at practice and ran through the stage and disrupted everything. Falling on stage for tinikling. Sharing the stage with everyone.

Why should people learn and join Rural? It’s really fun! And easy!

Which past PACN dance was your favorite and why? Singkil was a lot of fun to dance. The feeling when the fan girls hit their cue was pretty amazing and the gasp from the audience and applause was heartwarming.

Modern

Tell me your most memorable pacn experience. Why did you decide to do coordinate modern ? I wanted to contribute to the hip hop aspect of PACN and hopefully create fun memories with everyone this year.

Which past Modern/suite was your favorite? My favorite suite dance was the Moro Suite (where the women only danced). Although I could not dance in the , I loved watching all of them perform with their R.B.F. facials, wearing their beautiful costumes and emphasizing each movement gracefully.

My most memorable PACN experience would be performing with one of my closest friends, Kani Chan. We both were unsure about participating in PACN but after deciding to do it together, I enjoyed everything about it because I was able to learn more about my culture and made a lot of new friends.

Why should people learn and join Modern? People should learn modern because they will have a lot of fun and be able to meet a lot of new people. I encourage anyone who is nervous to at least try it. I met some of my closest friends from modern so I highly recommend anyone thinking about it to do it. Plus we will get dooooown so come through!

Jeremy Carlos 3 PACN's

Modern (hip-hop) Why did you decide to do coordinate modern ? I wanted to teach others how to be confident through dancing.

Tell me your most memorable pacn experience. When Miriya fell on her butt during conveyor belt our freshman year for tinikling. S.W.A.G

Why should people learn and join Modern? People should join modern because it really isn’t about if you dance well or if you have dance experience at all. It’s all about having fun, gaining confidence, and most of all enjoying your time being a part of YOUR PACN experience.

Which past Modern/suite dance was your favorite and why? My favorite suite was Moro because I get to dress up in Katsudoratan fierceness.

JD Pabon 4 PACN's

Modern (hip-hop) Why did you decide to do coordinate modern ? Tell me your most memorable pacn experience. My first year when I got to be the teacher and yell at people on stage LOL. And also just getting to be on stage with Barkada in my first PACN

Why should people learn and join Modern? Because it’s a good way to exercise and have fun with other people! It’s also a new experience every time you learn because you don’t know what to expect from exact teacher and each class.

Because I love to teach new people and fresh minds what hip hop can be and that everyone can do it! That you don’t have to be a super experienced dancer to do hip hop.

Which past Modern/suite dance was your favorite and why? I think my favorite suite was Moro when we did singkil, and my favorite modern set would definitely be the set from Best of Us three years back

Jamie Sison 1st PACN

Modern

Why did you decide to do coordinate modern ? Because I believe its going to be a fun experience and I’ll be able to improve on my leadership skills.

Why should people learn and join Modern? It’s going to be a fun experience and you’ll be able to acknowledge what your body is capable of doing. :)

Tell me your most memorable pacn experience. I’m actually a first year, I would hear stories of how fun it was to be part of PACN and I also want to make memories of my own experience too.
