Barkada in Tagalog means “a group of friends.� We are a group of friends whose aim is to promote the recognition and understanding of the Pilipino culture at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and our surrounding community. We, as your new E-Board, will try our best to acheive this while making sure you have a royally good time.

Letter from the President

Hello everyone and welcome to the 2016 – 2017 school year. My name is Anthony DeVera, and I am serving as president of this year’s Barkada Executive Board. For those of you who are new to Barkada, I would like to extend an especially warm invitation to learn and pursue culture and networks through the various resources we provide. Established in 1980 by a few individuals who were just trying to acquire free pizza, Barkada has come a long way in the development of its 4 pillars: Academics, Culture, Athletics and Social. Through these 4 pillars, Barkada has shaped its mission and vision to help ensure that its members and the surrounding communities succeed in growing and progressing towards a better tomorrow. From an entire month dedicated to academics, with the inclusion of several workshops and mentorship opportunities with the Kuya/Ate/Ading program, to creating a safe haven throughout the year for studying with Study Sessions, we look to fulfill the Academics pillar. Being one of the largest cultural organizations on campus, a huge focus of this organization is on culture, with the month of October dedicated to PAHM (Pilipino American History Month) workshops where you are invited to expand your knowledge on the facts and origins of certain customs and traditions as well as some deeper meaning to what is it to be a Filipino American. To top it off is one of our biggest events, our 27 th annual Pilipino American Culture Night (PACN) in which members will be given the chance to learn and showcase their talents of modern/traditional dance, acting, singing, and more. The emphasis on athletics is to ensure our members are physically healthy and grow physically as they expand mentally. To help facilitate this, we have multiple events throughout the year from Intramural sport competitions to our biggest sporting event, Sportsfest; an annual tradition going on its 28th year in which we host the largest Filipino organized sporting competition. Lastly, we have our focus on social aspect of the organization starting with Friendship Games where we learn all about SPUF and create an opportunity to externalize and network with Filipino organizations from schools everywhere. As we progress throughout the year, we’ll hope to create lasting relationships through our several social events.

Barkada has grown outside the limitations of being just a Filipino-American organization, and as you may soon realize, it will be a home away from home, with members who evolve into family and who will have a huge impact on your college career and more. Those returning members can definitely attest to this, and with that said, I’d like to welcome you all back as well. As president and friend, I hope to better this organization as we adapt to the changing times and build leaders for the future with our Executive board along with our Internship board and Advisory board. If you have any concerns or ever need a shoulder or open ear, a person to eat with or just stare at, don’t hesitate to approach us. I look forward to all the lives we get to have a positive impact on this year and all the memories that lieahead.

Why Barkada?

Never thought I would end up in a Filipino club. That just sounds so cliquey and keeping to my own ethnicity without branching out and diversifying. But I checked it out with an orientation buddy named Irwin nonetheless and was proven wrong. It turned out that this was a place to create lasting friendships, with the perks of having a place to call a second home on campus, literally. One of the biggest factors that got me to stay was that there is a space on campus called the APISC that’s equipped with an xbox, couches, wii, TV, conference room, bathroom, computers, free printing and more, and this place was where Barkada would hang out.

My parents, aunts, and uncles were all in Barkada when I was younger, so I already grew up around the club. After my first year, the memories and friends I made during PACN and other events convinced me to stay in Barkada.

Back in high school, I was active in the Filipino Organization there and coming to college it was something that felt familiar. Joining Barkada allowed me to easily find a support system and I ended up staying because after spending a year in the club, I don’t know what I would do without these friendships.

I went because a friend told me to come to a meeting and I ended staying because my Kuya Kevin Yang told me to come out to more things.

I remember joining with Martha Rosario.

I didn’t really want to join because of the amount of Filipinos, but I joined anyways.

Haha now I can’t imagine college without Barkada. It was uber fun and I learned and experienced so many new things. I don’t regret it one bit.

Life shits on you sometimes, and sometimes you are literally covered in shit, like actual feces. And as much as you try to deal with the shit yourself, sometimes you just need a little help. Even if you were able to deal with it yourself, the smell of feces is still there. That’s why friends exist, to help bring toilet paper and soap for you. So don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it :)
