Barkada’s Got Talent 2014

Written by Lydia Lei

ROICE REYES What did you perform at BGT? I performed with P Notes during the national anthem and during the acapella piece as well. I also did multiple song performances with a couple of friends.

Fave performance? The most memorable part of the night (which is also my favorite performance) was when Brothars performed. The men of Barkada’s E-board were very inspirational and displayed a perfect example of manliness. With the exception of Cody Guerrero (unless he buys me boba and/or food), they did great.

Do you think you’ll perform again next year? I would definitely like to perform again next year if I am still alive.

S

2nd year, Electrical Engineering

. Have you ever performed before? I have performed in public before multiple times, however, performing in BGT was a whole other beast. It was very nerve wracking, but still very enjoyable.

JANNA ESGUERRA 2nd year, Psychology What made you want to go to BGT? Well, I went to my first Barkada meeting that very U-Hour and people are very welcoming and friendly. That’s how I heard about BGT that night. It sounded really fun, so why not? :)

What was the most memorable part of the night? Your favorite performance? I think it was really memorable meeting and getting to meet people that night! I also got to see what talent Barkada offers. No lie. I was in awe. It’s so cute how everyone is so supportive of each other. I really liked all of them coz they’re just so engaging in their own way. But if I were to pick a favorite I’d say [Lydia, Hannah, and Ariane’s] Cups version of Story of My Life (Lydia was amazingg~) and that one really epic dance crew. Lol. I forgot what they were called. Well, I went to my first Barkada meeting that very U-Hour and people are very welcoming and friendly. That’s how I heard about BGT that night. It sounded really fun, so why not? :) I don’t really know what else I’d ask for, coz it was really fun. Soo, next year’s BGT, surprise me

Would you come to watch BGT again next year or possibly even perform?

What would you like to see more of at BGT in the future?

ASHLEY BACUS Mount St. Mary’s College

What made you want to go to Barkada’s BGT? To support, DUH! I missed the event last year, so I made sure to make it out! It was also the first time Barkada had an external performer. One of my very good friends and Pangkat E-Board member, Michelle Mekpongsatorn, performed with her external Kuya, Mark Ruidera!

What was the most memorable part of the night? Your favorite performance? My most memorable part of the night was when I busted out the “Good Job” poster during Michelle & Mark’s performance. It was totally unexpected because the sign was from Barkada to Pangkat at our talent show. My favorite performance was when Lydia, Hannah (and other girl LOL) started off singing “Wrecking Ball”…I was getting all into it, dancing in my seat & BAM those girls just surprised us with their lovely voices and twist on “Story of My Life” with the cups.

Would you come back next year and invite more of your friends? I would love to come back next year & invite more friends!

PACN by Kelsey Estrada

2014 holds many surprises for Barkada; one of them being PACN. One may ask, “What is PACN? PACN is an annual showcase performed by your very own Barkada club. It stands for Pilipino American Culture Night, in which we showcase our own culture to the general public through visual and musical performances. PACN consists of two main parts: a play, in which you will see a storyline and members acting, and dances that are relevant to the Pilipino-American culture.

For this year’s PACN, the dances are broken up into the following suites, or categories:

TRADITIONALIST Ceremonial and ritual style dances and usually help depict a story Dances: Binaylan Banog

MARIA CLARA

MORO SUITE

Named after the character of Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere and consists of Spanish influenced dances involving classy dance attire such as barongs for the men and dresses for the women

Muslim dances from the Southern Mindanao region that show the influence of Arab and Indo-Malaysian culture

Dances: La Jota Manilena Aray

Dances: Pagapir Singkil

KORDILYERA

ESKRIMA

Dances from the mountain region of Luzon to celebrate festivals, rituals, and victories among tribes

A Filipino weapon based martial art that utilizes rattan/bamboo sticks as weapons

Dances: Bendian Takiling

RURAL Lively dances usually showing the lives of farmers having that “fiesta spirit Dances: Gaway Gaway KaratongT inikling ALSO!...Members Modernpretty straight forward already

As you can see, there are many opportunities you can be a part of during PACN. Don’t know any of the dances listed above? DASS OKAY. You can learn these dances during the practices, and you can also bond with your fellow members if you haven’t done so already. For those who don’t know much about PACN, I suggest you stop by PACN practices, because they’re definitely fun, AND IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO JOIN (for now). PACN is something we all look forward to, not just as a play, but also as a means to showcase the beautiful culture of the Philippines, so save the date: May 2nd and I hope you’re all excited about PACN as much as I am. YA PACN! I decided to ask a few members what they look forward to during this PACN season:

Year: 1st Major: Civil Engineering

“I really loved last year’s PACN because it helped me meet a bunch of people and I got to know what Barkada was all about since I wasn’t too active before then. Everyone was super nice so I basically got along with everyone. This year, I’m an acting director and I look forward to teaching people and helping them and having fun because I learned so much from last year.”

CARISSA LAWN MOWER renz seriano “I heard PACN requires a lot of effort, dedication and hardwork, so I don’t really know how I ended up here cause I’m not about that lyfe. But this season I’m looking forward to bond with people and just have a great time. I’m also looking forward to all the blisters I’m gonna get cause of Tinikling. But I’m pretty sure it’ll be worth it in the end because I’ll get to bond with y’all Barkada people.”

Year: 2nd Major: Psychology

Year: 1st Major: Landscape Architecture

-“I look forward to working with the cast on the script. From what I’ve read and the work that the actors have already put in so far, it looks like it’s going to be a really great show! I’m also excited for the dances this year. Since I’m not Filipino, it’s cool for me to learn more about a different culture through the arts rather than through a textbook.” Regarding last year’s PACN experiences, my experience with PACN last year was amazing. It was a lot of work, time and effort, but it was great. Going into it, I didn’t know a lot of my fellow leads in the cast, but now, I am able to look back on all the memories we shared and I feel that we’ve created some sort of family. I feel that PACN is the one event that Barkada holds that brings everyone closer. Sure, you probably think you know a lot of people in the club right now, but after PACN season, you’ll feel so much more connected to Barkada and its members.”

JULIA TALAVERA

cARLO NEPOMUCENO “I was in a professional non-profit Filipino organization called PASACAT for 7 years and I danced and played music for them. I’m only in a few dances and Rondalla for this year’s PACN, but I am excited for is acting because I have the supporting role of Jacob and Michael’s dad.”

Year: 2nd Major: Communications Public Relations emphasis
