What is friendship games?

Since 1985, over 40 Pilipino American Student organizations from a number of college campuses representing California, Nevada, and Arizona come together to Cal State Fullerton to participate in Friendship Games - a day filled with friendly competitive games, performances, and most importantly, to celebrate “S.P.U.F” (Spirit, Pride, Unity, and Friendship). For the past several years, Barkada has always looked forward to attending Friendship Games. From months of planning to the final week of preparation aka Hype Nights, leading up to the day of, Barkada never failed to give their 110% in SPUF-ing, playing games, and performing their all at roll call. This year, Barkada rolled in FG with the theme of “Barkada’s Game Ka Na Ba,” lead by Jonahdine Sison!

JONAHDINE SISON B-A-R-K-A-D-A! We ain’t no hollaback club! That’s right! I want to thank each and everyone of you for coming out to Friendship Games and SPUF’ing your hearts out. Watching you guys participate in the interactions and the games really showed your true Barkada colors.

Through screaming, dancing, and jumping I saw your SPIRIT. Through finishing strong during the games and supporting each other, no matter the outcome, I saw your PRIDE. Through making new friendships and reigniting old ones, along with making sure our voice was heard, I saw UNITY. Last but not least, through sharing honey, sleeping together under the tent, and creating new memories, I saw FRIENDSHIP. I’m so proud of all of you, but this year isn’t over yet. This Social Chair has so much more in store for you guys! But until the next Friendship Games, I want you guys to continue showing your SPUF at our upcoming events such as Pilipino Thanksgiving, Family Feud, and Penny Wars!

WILLIAM HUA Hello everyone!

Can I just say that I’ve never seen so many people show up to Friendship games in the numbers that we did? That is seriously impressive, but I was even more impressed by everyone’s energy and resilience to keep going. Friendship games is no walk in the park. If anything, it’s a marathon that you never wanted to be a part of, because you consider walking to the fridge as exercise.

It is seriously a lot to ask someone to wake up at 5am and SPUF your heart out until 3pm. That’s like 10 hours of SPUFING! Ya’ll crazy! But more importantly! YA’LL FREAKING DID IT!!!! I could not be any prouder of you all! Keep the hype going because it does not end at Friendship Games. If anything, it’s only the start. ;) And one last thing….

WELCOME TO THE BARKADA FAMILY! We are a loud group of crazy individuals with a weird obsession with buttholes and Korean bbq, but remember, we will always be here for each other. As months pass and years go by, you will soon understand why we are the way we are. Because, regardless of where you are or regardless of who you are, we will always be your home away from home. Your family. Your Barkada.

MARLON ABUBO I saw the excitement in everyone’s eyes when we hit Fullerton. Nobody can really explain the experience of FG until you see all the schools and how hard they all go. I’m proud to have been one of this year’s Hype Leaders, to work with the other Hype Leaders and Jonah, who did a wonderful job. Everyone really gave everything they got, from SPUF ing to games. I hope everyone enjoyed it!

JANINE RAYMUNDO CAN I GET AN “OH YEAH”?! (OH YEAH!) *clap* (WOOO!) Yay Friendship Games! Words can’t even describe how proud and happy I was to see so many faces, both old and new, come out for our first big event in Barkada!

It was truly a day filled with SPIRIT, PRIDE, UNITY, and of course FRIENDSHIP! Seeing everyone SPUF-ing their hearts out with other clubs as well as bonding and building strong friendships along the way was probably my favorite part of FG. Honestly, when it came right down to it, Jonah, the other hype leaders, and myself had one main goal. We all just wanted you, the members, to have the most fun-packed experience possible. FG wouldn’t be so great without everyone’s individual contributions, whether it being... hmm I don’t know, a Sexy Bomb Dancer?! Or maybe being a hardcore player during the games. Shout out to all those who came out to hype nights and giving it their all at FG. This is only the start to all the amazing events and experiences you will have in Barkada.

So keep those positive spirits up, because you have so much more ahead of ya!

Dear Barkada, When I first met you, you were busy preparing for Friendship Games. I didn’t know what it was back then, but I could tell it was a big deal and found out it was just a week away. I am from a different school, and I came with friends from there that I just recently met. They told me about you though, how friendly and welcoming you were. It was your Lumpia Night that night, and you welcomed me into your home even though I was new and made me feel loved (and full). I wanted to stay.

At Hype Nights, I made a lot of new friends in a short amount of time.

I usually keep a small circle, but you keep introducing me to new people. My anxiety from not even going to the same school as you just kept on fading and fading. I learned more about Friendship games, the traditions, chants, and the games itself. However, the way you talked about it from years before really… is something else. I fell for you Barkada.

I loved it all. I wanted to be the best I am. I became more comfortable around you. I found myself screaming your chants, dancing your dances, singing along with you, acting stupid, crazy, and just smiling nonstop. We became closer and closer. I loved it. In the end, you made me a cow. Thanks.

No really, thank you. You said it was for the most spirited person. Or for who showed the most spirit. I, of course, thought I didn’t deserve

it. You insisted. I relented. I was going to be in a cow costume. I won’t lie, I felt pressure. I didn’t want to disappoint you as your cow, but the whole thing, Friendship Games, was bigger than me.

I had the best time that day. We looked the best. Our role call was the best. SPUFin’ with you was the best. Our interaction was the best. I wish we played the best too but I guess we can’t be the best at everything (ha-ha).

When CSULA (I think) came and jammed with us, and I played Sunday Morning and you sang along, I want to thank you for that memory especially as I’m keeping it real close to my heart. Mahal kita Barkada.

I didn’t mean for this to be long. This is my thank you note, love letter, and yelp review all rolled into one. “5/5 will come back again.”

Janine Raymundo “My biggest advice to new members of Barkada is to be active throughout the entire year AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! My first year of college was filled with so many fun and unforgettable memories, and I honestly have Barkada to thank for that.”

When I first joined, I didn’t have the intention at all to be a super active member as I am today. But from the big events such as Friendship Games, KAA Reveal, Sportsfest, PACN (Pilipino American Culture Night) and all the little things in between, I was able to break out of my shell more and build a ton of amazing friendships along the way. Simply being around such a welcoming yet popping bunch was enough for me to come back. Barkada isn’t just “a group of friends” to me. As cliché as it sounds, this club is my family. So trust!

You won’t regret joining and participating in all the things the club has to offer. Don’t be intimidated, we’re all here to have a good time. Long story short, I <3 Barkada and I’m sure you will too! Shout out to all the Legac-E Babies, Embarrassing Line, my loving roommates Jeanette and Breggie, Kani (aka da bae), and so many more!!”

“I’ve been wanting to join a Filipino club at Citrus College, but we didn’t have one. So I tried organizing a Filipino club there called ‘Pinoy United Student Organization’ (PUSO), but sadly we couldn’t find the perfect club advisor. So Ana and I decided ‘Why not join Barkada? Cal Poly isn’t that far from Citrus College.’ Wanting to learn more about Filipino culture and meeting new people motivated me to come out and join Barkada. Because why not, right?”

For people who are interested in joining a club or organization and are in the same situation as I am, coming from another school: I would say if you want to join a club and be involved, go for it! Get yourself out there. I think joining Barkada was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I have made so many friends in Barkada than my whole Citrus College Career. Funny, right? But it’s true. Barkada offers many opportunities to its members such as learning the culture, values, and the national language, Tagalog. They also offer a variety of social events like Lumpia Night, Tagalog workshops, Friendship Games, etc., which build strong social and communication skills, and with these events, you’re able to form long-lasting friendships with the people you meet. You’re not only learning about Filipino culture; you are also learning things about yourself and your roots. So far, my time in Barkada has been nothing but FUN and I can’t wait to make more fun and memorable memories with everyone in Barkada! I gotta say for the short amount of time I’ve been with Barkada, I already love all of them! I love BARKADA! Shoutouts to Dwight, Janine, Anthony, Janet and Jonah! <3 #ROYALT-E

We’ll have more responsibilities and less time to simply have fun. You never know what might happen in Barkada; even the simplest thing can become a memory that lasts a lifetime.”

I dedicated countless hours into this club because I wanted members to also gain these kinds of memories, to make bonds and friendships with other members who just may someday be part of their future wedding, who just may someday become the ninong or ninang of their future kids. Barkada isn’t just a group of friends, it’s a family. As cliche as it sounds, to me and many others, this statement couldn’t be any more true.

“The main reason as to why I am so into sports is because I had no passion to begin with. Let me explain. I grew up always having to follow what my parents say. And even then I was a rebellious child so I rarely listened. There was a time in my life where I realized I was just getting way too fat for my own good.”

I was so heavy that by the time I reached high school, I weighed 260 lbs. It got to a point where I was at risk of getting diabetes like my mother, and I would be at an even bigger risk of a lot of things. Looking in the mirror was such a horrific sight everyday for me that I decided to take a chance and try out for the Vista del Lago football team alongside a couple of friends. Fast forward to my first game as a freshman, and man it was exhilarating! Getting onto the field, waiting for the snap, and priming for a big hit; it was just awesome. As games passed, and we started winning and losing games, I realized what it meant to play for a team, to enter the field with your brothers, and fight alongside them. I stayed with the same guys for a while, some teammates left and new ones came to take their spot. I just knew I’d stay and keep playing football for a long time.

As I grew up, my family had always been into sports, and it wasn’t until high school that I got into them. It was fun to watch on TV, but it was more fun to play. I appreciated athletics way more because I participated in so many sports. There was baseball, soccer, and basketball too. In the sports world, I have become a participant and a spectator, as well as an analyst and that is why I really enjoy sports and will never get tired of it.

Now after playing at least in the high school level, why would I dwindle down to recreational flag football with a bunch of random people from a Filipino club? I would not say that is such a downgrade. I’d say it is the greatest decision I have ever made. I have fun with these so-called “bunch of random people.” In fact, these people are family. And just like playing back in high school, my teammates became my brothers, mi familia. The people in Barkada, who play alongside me became aking pamilya. Unlike high school, I do not have to deal with a coach yelling at me, unforgiving practices, and constant fatigue. Every night when the lights are shining down on the Intramural field, the wooden courts, or any playing field, I am with my friends, who are here to have fun. Winning is just a bonus. The real victory I gain playing with Barkada are the memories I create, the bonds I share, and the hilarious plays we laugh at. These are the reasons I continue to enjoy to do the things I do; the reason I play sports with Barkada.”

LUMPIA

B

arkadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Lumpia Night is a time where Barkada members have the opportunity to learn how to make lumpia. Learning how to make lumpia allows us to not only learn how to cook Filipino food, but also learn about our culture and the origins of our cuisine, because the Philippines has been influenced by many cultures throughout history.

Lumpia is believed to have originated from China and derived from the Chinese Hokkien word Lunpia, also known as Popiah. Popiah is a fresh spring roll commonly found in Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Since Lumpia descends from popiah, lumpia can be considered a type of spring roll. Spring rolls come in all different shapes, sizes, and fillings, depending on the resources available.

Similarly, in the Philippines, there are many different kinds of lumpia. The most common is Lumpiang Shanghai, which is primarily filled with meat.

The filling typically consists of ground pork, onion, carrots, garlic, and seasoning. That filling is then wrapped with an egg and flour based lumpia wrapper and deep fried until golden brown, giving it a crunch in every bite.

X Lumpiang Sariwa, meaning “fresh lumpia”, is very similar to the Vietnamese fresh spring roll. The filling is comprised of fresh, cooked ingredients and is wrapped with an egg crepe. What makes the lumpiang sariwa fresh lumpia, is that it is not fried, leaving the wrap fresh. Another type of lumpia that is very similar to lumpia sariwa is Lumpia Hubad. “Hubad”, meaning naked, is lumpia sariwa served without the wrapper; so basically, just the filling.

Turon is a sweet fried lumpia, which is served usually as a dessert. The filling consists of sliced banana or plantain with brown sugar. Other ingredients that can be included in turon are jackfruit and cinnamon.

Asian and Asian American Representation in Social Media Designed by Erin Borja

s an aspiring Filipino-American actor and

director, it is hard to find any recognizable Asian-American actors and producers that people know off the top of their head, without having to be referred to their respective movie or TV show.

“What about Jackie Chan and Jet Li? They’re in movies, right?”

Well yes, but they are mainly iconic because of their martial arts, not so much their acting. A survey of the top 100 films of 2015 in the U.S showed that “out of the top 100 movies, only 14 featured a lead or co-lead of color, with 9 being black, one Latino, and four being mixed race. There were no Asian-American leads or co-leads in the 2015 sample”. Asian-Americans are close to invisible in the Hollywood scene. So what’s going on?

Well to put it blatantly: whitewashing. Wikipedia defines whitewashing as “a casting practice in the film industry of the United States in which white actors are cast in historically non-white roles”.

White actors portrayed their minority characters by putting on (in the case of Asians) “yellowface,” or the exaggerated facial features of Asian people in addition to mimicking stereotypical behaviors associated with Asians. A notable example would be Mickey Rooney’s portrayal of the Japanese landlord Mr. Yunioshi in the Academy Award winning movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961).

Although it may seem harmless, professor David A. Schlossman commented on yellowface, observing that “many of the Asian roles portrayed by white actors also contributed to the pantheon of racial stereotypes in US national discourse”.

Simply put, the practice of yellowface contributed to systematic racism towards Asian-American people and labeled them as “foreign”. Asian characters were confined to their racial stereotypes: unattractive, overtly intelligent, unsociable, and -for women- hypersexualized and exotic.

This further harmed Asian-Americans trying to make it in the film industry as producers deemed Asian-American actors unprofitable, believing that white actors would be more relatable, which would lead to larger audiences and higher profits. The idea of racial selectivity and preference brought on a slew of movies in which originally Asian characters and people are played by white actors.

in an Asian environment with the intent of saving the area’s people. Born from whitewashing, this practice comes with the idea that a solely Asian cast isn’t relatable for audiences.

This puts Asian people in a light where they are perceived as a “helpless people,” reliant on a “white savior” to win the battle against the bad guys. Dear Hollywood: WE DON’T NEED Katharine Hepburn as Jade, Dragon Seed (1944) TO CONSTANTLY BE SAVED BY MATT DAMON (okay maybe not Matt Damon but you get the point). We can prove ourselves to be our own saviors and heroes if you’ll just give us the chance! Just look at foreign language films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Ip Man (2008)! Both films received critical proclaim in both the American and Asian movie box offices. Also actors and martial artists featured in these movies such as Michelle Justin Chatwin as Goku, Dragonball: Evolution (2009) Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan, and Bruce Lee have been actively changing the SIDENOTE. Rarely are these characters of significant importance in the plot and rarely do they appear in more than one scene within the movie. So how can we make movies more diverse while avoiding tokenism?

cary Stories Nights revolve around the common idea of spiritual and paranormal energy. Most of the stories told are reallife experiences and memories. Campus legends were also put into the mix. The talk of shadow people and sleep paralysis were constantly bought up. I was even one of them.

Sharing my paranormal experiences enlightened myself and others that we are not alone in our experiences.

Filipinos are known to be very superstitious.

Many common urban legends from the Philippines consist of the White Lady and the Aswang.

The White Lady is said to be the ghost of a long-haired women in a white dress. Her story is that she had been brutally raped and murdered.

The White Lady targets men that travel alone in the dark. One Barkada member, Daniel Rogel, has actually encountered the White Lady.

People have also encountered Shadow People.

My personal experience was when I moved to an old house in Germany before coming to the United States. Germany is known to have many urban legends consisting of those who died in war.

“I got this weird feeling that something bad had happened in the connecting room...”

When I first moved into the basement (sounds funny, right? In Europe, basements are furnished and livable), I got this weird feeling that something bad had happened in the connecting room. This feeling made me want to ask the landlord if anything bad had happened, but I was too scared, so I tried not to think about it.

During the next few days, I had been busy with school and sports. At night, I would just do homework and would always fall asleep with the light on. Then one night, I actually had time to get ready for bed and turned off the light before sleeping. Right before falling asleep, my body

The White Lady by Breggie Tuazon filled with a cool numbing feeling, which woke me up. I found out that waking up with sleep paralysis is one of the most frightening things I have experienced.

Sleep paralysis, if you did not know, is a phenomenon in which an individual, either while falling asleep or waking, briefly experiences an inability to move, speak, or react. Because I was unable to move or speak, all I had was my sight.

Standing straight in front of me stood a dark figure looking over me. I tried moving my toes, since I knew that that was the most effective way to break out from the sleep paralysis.

But this time it was not working.

Scared for my life, I shut my eyes as hard I could, praying to God and hoping that this dark figure, or so-called “shadow person,” would not hurt me. A few moments later, I finally break

from my sleep paralysis. The shadow person has disappeared. I run to turn on the light.

The next few days, I would sleep with the light on. Then one night, I decided to man up and sleep with the light off. I woke up the next morning without anything bad happening.

Later that day, I asked my mom when I came home from school if she had gotten the house blessed. My mom replied, “Yes anak, why do you ask?”

I answered, “Just worrying.”

In my head, I was like, “thank the lord.”

Nothing bad happened in that house after my house got blessed… well at least in that house…...

he results of the 2016 presidential election T should alarm communities of every ethnic, religious, and political background. President-elect, Donald Trump, and the Republican majority House of Representatives and Senate are not my main concerns; however, what is more concerning is the select Americans who have elected to put those people in positions of great power. There are countless articles online that describe the lived experiences of Asian

Americans, Muslims, LBTQ+ individuals, etc.—essentially people of color (PoC) and minorities—after what they coin to be “Day 1 of Trump Presidency.” Swastika graffiti, “Make America White Again,” “Go back to your own country,” high school students issuing fake deportation papers to their fellow classmates who happen to be PoC, are just a few of the living evidences that Mr. Trump has clearly

affected this country in a way that digresses it, rather than progress it. Despite these happenings, I know people who do not feel affected by his presidency at all. I have had conversations with close friends and acquaintances where we have discussed points such as feeling fear for their life, feeling fear for their families’ lives, or feeling no fear at all —and it is the last point that gives me the most anxiety. In a specific conversation I have had with one individual, they stated that they did not feel threatened or fearful whatsoever, despite Mr. Trump being president, because there has not been any policy ordered yet that directly affects this individual—they justified that until the day comes that Mr. Trump releases an executive order that disadvantages them in any way, they will remain unworried.

I can acknowledge that yes, there are no policies that are placed definitely yet, as his term does not start until January of the following year. I can also acknowledge that yes, though Mr. Trump has had a record of falsely labeling and discriminating against people of almost all walks of life in his campaign trail (Mexican Americans, Native Americans, veterans, Muslim Americans, Asian Americans, women, LBTQ+ Americans, etc.), it does not directly mean that he will enact policies that will negatively affect these people. Like he has said before,“words are just words;” maybe he doesn’t bear the meaning of them too seriously.

Regardless of how he sees it and what he meant by his many statements, the entire nation has been shaken by the words he has said. The words he has said—infamously, that Mexicans are rapists, criminals, illegals; Filipinos and Muslims are terrorists and animals; and among many others you can easily Google—have already been said and there is no taking them back.

If I may, I want to compare these acts of violence to bacteria if people decide to remain complacent. Bacteria can spread, as it also can be diminished when there are forces actively trying to diminish it. The acts of violence that are currently occurring in our country will not stop happening even if you turn a blind eye—we must always try to actively seek ways to weaken the growing bacteria of hate that has already been introduced by President-elect Trump.

Spontaneity and sounder complexity do the most to a traveler.

Whether alone or with engaging company, the mind can gallivant away while the body is set to follow. These feelings are something that I personally wish that everyone would have at least once in their lifetime. No matter if you are extroverted, introverted, depressed or lazy, having at least one moment in your life where you only asked your intuition for directions instead of Google Maps or Waze (never apple maps) is moral boosting and will likely broaden your sense of self as you humble yourself by the vastness which is our backyard.

Being a military child, I was fortunate to be able to travel to places that most don’t. Being born overseas and stopping by most islands on the way to the states made me connected to the Pacific. I always make it a point to stop by beaches once in a while to stare and try to find my native land, Japan. Being born somewhere else helped me open my eyes and see that the world is bigger than just Los Angeles or San Diego. Places aren’t just pictures that you can only see from post cards or Polaroids, they are homes and colorful landscapes to the masses. People aren’t stereotypes that fit into categories, they are each an individual human being that have their own comeuppance, whether their society has strong norms or is normless. Everyone at their core is indivisible by labels or by stereotypical biases.

Seeing the sunset over what would seem like a panorama, or the lone offices that create night lights to paint a portrait in pastel, helps you realize that you are alive. The Sun is new every day. The individual lights from skyscrapers stay on because the employee went home, to a wife, to a family, to someone that they love. The empty lights don’t mean alone. The empty offices mean that they are alive, and so are you. Dear reader, you are alive. So do something. Go to somewhere basic, like LACMA or the beach. Spend time with at least one person. Not just like hang out at school, but go somewhere different. Talk about the most random of topics. Live to laugh, laugh to remind yourself that you are wholesome and able to do everything and anything.

The world is amazing, go see it.
