What is Barkada? Meet your board for the 2020-2021 school year! Our FIRST Artist Spotlight... Guess the Board Name for a Prize?
What is Barkada? The word "Barkada" translates to a "group of friends." Cal Poly Pomona's Barkada is based off of our four pillars: Academics, Culture, Athletics, and Social. Throughout the school year, we celebrate these pillar through different events such as PACN (Pilipino-American Culture Night), Study Sessions, Pilipinofest, and Friendship Games. Although Barkada has a Filipino origin, we are open to everyone whether they are Filipino or not. Join Barkada to learn about the Filipino culture, make new friends, and more!
The Four Pillars ACADEMICS As one of the main pillars of Barkada, the academic aspect is responsible for ensuring that Barkada members are on top of their studies. ex. Kuya, Ate, Ading Program (KAA), Pilipino Graduation (P-Grad), and Study Sessions/Nights
CULTURE Culture is one of the biggest aspects that Barkada pushes forward. We as family, friends, students, and people believe that we can only go so far without knowing our culture, but it will always play a big role in our lives. In our club, we elect an e-board member, a Culture chair, to help remind us who we are. ex. Pilipino-American Heritage Month (PAHM) and PilipinoAmerican Culture Night (PACN)
ATHLETICS This aspect of Barkada encourages the members to physically challenge themselves by taking part in the athletics offered at Cal Poly Pomona and by Barkada. ex. Intramurals and Sports
SOCIAL This pillar of Barkada, the social aspect, exists to promote the development of people skills, to create memories for a lifetime, and to just have fun during one's college years. ex. Beach Day, Friendship Games, and End of the Year Banquet
A Letter from the President Hello Barkada! My name is Justin Gabriel Angeles and I am so excited to be serving as this year's Barkada Executive Board President. I want to give a big warm welcome to all those who are new to Barkada and I can't wait to be able to meet everyone once this pandemic is over. Originally founded in 1980 by a group of friends who were trying to get Filipino culture recognized on campus, Barkada has now elevated to new heights. Barkada is Filipino street slang meaning a group of friends, like the group who made the organization. However, it is more than just that definition. The founders and our members have exclaimed that Barkada is family, a home away from home that is built with four pillars: Academics, Culture, Sports, and Social. Through these four pillars, Barkada will help ensure that its members and the surrounding community succeed in life and progress towards a better tomorrow. Barkada aims to promote academics through workshops, study sessions, and the Kuya Ate Ading program where you get paired with a mentor. Furthermore, Barkada hosts an event known as Pilipino Graduation, a day to celebrate academic accomplishments. Barkada is a culture club first and foremost. We aim to spread our culture through Pilipino American Culture Night, a celebration of Filipino culture that also discusses issues within the community through the use of a play and traditional dances. During Pilipino American History Month in October, we reveal the history of the Philippines, promote cuisine through an event known as Lumpia night, and fight for our Filipino American veterans' rights and equity in a rally known as Justice for Filipino American Veterans. We put an emphasis on athletics through intramural sports. Barkada doesn't just promote physical health but mental health through workshops. In addition, Barkada creates a family friendly tournament known as Sportsfest and E-Sportsfest for all our gamers. Lastly, Barkada participates in Friendship Games where we SPUF our hearts at CSUF. We host various socials like Pilipino Thanksgiving, Barkada Christmas, Ice Skating, Auction, and end the year off with a banquet similar to prom. Barkada is a home where stupid is cool, cool is stupid. Through these myriad of events, I can say that I finally found my group of friends that I can call family. I hope you can join so you can be a part of this wonderful family too. I am currently a 4th year Mechanical Engineer who is just trying to find his way in life. College can be tough but I found my calling in this amazing organization. Barkada has helped me become the person I am today. Through Barkada, I learned that I can just be myself because we are an organization that loves every member just the way they are. Times may be tough right now in this pandemic, but with this support system I am able to persevere through it. Barkada means the whole world to me but this world wouldn't mean a thing if you weren't in it. Don't be afraid to reach out to me if you ever need anything. As President and a friend, I am here to support you through the bad times and the good times. I hope we can make memories together! With this current executive board, I assure you that we will give you the best damn experience we can. With love, Justin Gabriel Angeles

why did you join Barkada?
I joined Barkada to find a sense of belonging. I've always wanted to have a group of friends who can accept me for who I am and I found it here. I first found out about Barkada when I was looking at their old videos. I stumbled upon their E-Board auction video and I knew this was the group of friends I wanted to have. My first event was Beach Day and everyone was so welcoming. Furthermore, learning about my culture in this organization has made me appreciate our community as a whole. When there is no history, there is no self. When we know history, we know ourselves. hobbies?
I enjoy reading books and poetry. Some of my favorites include: Milk and Honey, Battle Royale, and Hyperbole and a Half. I love clothes as I see them as an expression of who we are. I think it's so cool to able to express your interest without even having to say a thing by just wearing your favorite things on your clothes. I even make my own clothes in my free time through sewing and painting. I paint a lot of cartoon characters and pop culture on my clothes. I love watching anime and David Dobrik vlogs. I love acting! Being able to play a different character in life just seems so fun to me. shoutouts?

why did you join Barkada?
As an incoming freshman, I didn't just want to stay in my dorm and just be lazy, so I wanted a way to get involved on campus. Also, before I came to college, I knew about Filipino clubs on college campuses and I thought that was really cool. Growing up, I didn't have many filipinos grow up around me so I saw this chance to be with my people lol. hobbies?

why did you join Barkada?
One reason is because I wanted to explore my culture more. I wasn't too exposed to it growing up, and I was falling out of connection with my culture during high school. I only knew a select few things up until I joined Barkada, and that's when I started learning more and asking more questions to my parents and relatives about our culture. The other reason is that I wanted to find a group that would help me get through college. School and life can get rough sometimes, and I couldn't have asked for a better support system than Barkada. hobbies?

I joined Barkada because I was looking for a place I can make some friends. I had seen Barkada under the list of clubs in the Freshman Campus Guide, and I had always tried to push myself out to join. Fall 2018, I was too shy to join Friendship Games, but I was able to come out for my first event: KAA Mixer. I had come to the club by myself, and I was glad I did it. I made many great friends, and I am glad to see people break out their shells and have fun. hobbies?

Coming into college, I already knew I wanted to join a Fil-Am organization. In high school, I would attend Fil-Am youth conferences at colleges around the state where I realized my passion for Filipino culture and history. My best friend and I ended up starting a Filipino Club called "BRIDGE" at my high school with help from UC Davis' BRIDGE: Pilipinx Outreach & Retention team. I felt like these experiences really helped me identify who I am as a person and I wanted to make sure I could continue learning at Cal Poly Pomona. hobbies?

I loved all the character dynamics, the humor, and how the setting was in college. My favorite character is Abed because he’s so weird and it’s so cool that he’s best friends with Childish Gambino in the show. (Thanks Kyle Pat for the recommendation)
Although this was my third time watching the series, I really enjoyed this run because I was able to watch it with my girlfriend as it was her first time watching the show.
I enjoyed watching it a lot when I was younger because I was attached to some of the characters, specifically Uncle Iroh and Toph! Watching it again now is very nostalgic, and there are some things that i didn’t catch before that I did now!

artist spotlight 1.1
LEANNA GAN Leanna is a 3rd year student at CPP. She joined Barkada during Luck-e year and has been active since. She is also involved in APHIG. Fun fact, she's been involved in multiple PACNs, including being a Maria Clara Coordinator for PACN 30.
?
Who are your inspirations when it comes to artists?
"One of my all time favorite artists would be Yayoi Kusama who created many pieces of work including one called 'The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away.' which is a infinity mirror room featured at the broad in LA. She is a japanese artist who revolves a lot of her work around herself, her mental health, and how she has grown through the years. Her art was a way for her to cope which is seen through a lot of her repetitive patterns that you see throughout her work. Along with her art expressing her own mental health, her art also aims towards showing activism and social justice which is why I've looked up to her since highschool and why I relate to her art and all its aspects." Follow her socials!
@leannagann @_leannasart_
?
What are some of your favorite pieces of work you have completed?
"Reminiscing"
"My all time favorite is a painting of me looking into a reflection and then the reflection is a skull or a skeleton. I think I called it 'Reminiscing' because you can look at it in different ways. One way being you looking into the future towards your inevitable death while the other perspective can be taken as you on your death bed looking back on your life, making sure you lived a happy life, and no regrets at the end of the day."
?
What lead you to start drawing and who were your early influences?
"...Because I come from a family of artists with my dad being an Architect. So it basically all stemmed from him. Also, by being the youngest of 3 siblings, with my other two siblings being artists, I looked up to the 3 of them (her dad and her siblings) and was always surrounded by their creativity and their creative lifestyle."
2/3 of her "Holy Smokes" collection
?
What was your first serious piece of art you
"I can't remember exactly when but I think it was in 8th grade summer. I still remember it, it was a series I called 'Holy Smokes' and it was just paintings of people smoking."
?
What was your inspiration behind "Holy Smokes"?
"Definitely back in middle school when I watched a lot of anime, I was a big of fan of the japanese school outfits. Also, I can't remember if I read it somewhere or I heard the phrase 'Holy Smokes' but after that I put two and two together and the that was that. "
