Friendship Games 2014 The months of planning, the whole week of preparation, and all the hard work brought us together on October 25. Friendship Games 2014 only lasted for a day, but the memories and the SPUF made on that day stays with us and keeps Barkada together for much longer. Friendship Games is one of the largest gatherings of Filipino-Americans in the United

States. Schools from all over California, Las Vegas, and Arizona meet at Fullerton to show off the spirit they have for their respective organizations. Through SPUF battles and games, two schools come out on top at the end of the day to take the SPUF or Games trophies home. Hype Nights was our first step to Friendship Games. This is the week before where we teach Barkada everything they need to know for that day. From the cheers to the games, we were out there every night and I could see the SPUF continue to grow within the club. And day

after day watching each of my hype leaders and other speakers talk about what each part of SPUF meant to them I had to stop and ask myself “what does SPUF even really mean?” When it came time to give my speech on that Friday night before Friendship Games I told everyone the meaning that I was finally able to come up with for SPUF. And that’s “heart”. The heart that we show all the other schools at FG and the heart that we hold for Barkada throughout the rest of the year after. So when it came to Saturday, what I saw from Barkada could not make me more proud. Despite the heat, the lack of sleep, and the unnecessary c**p from Long Beach, Barkada did not stop showing off their SPUF that day for one second. No we did not win the trophy or the games. But what we take away from this day is something so much more than all of that. Spirit. Pride. Unity. Friendship. That’s what SPUF stands for, but what is it. SPUF is staying out at the pancakes until 9 oclock

despite all the homework and midterms. It’s waking up at 4AM to caravan down to Fullerton. It’s losing your voice after cheering and yelling all day. It’s giving your all during the games. And it’s putting all your heart into Barkada. Sadly now has come the time For me to finish off one last rhyme. So Barkada, I must say that I’m proud For that whole day you were all so loud. Showing your spirit for our group of friends And sticking with us until the end. Thank you Barkada, for all that you’ve done. And for being the best Things Twos and Thing Ones. I can’t wait to see what this year has in store, With Sportsfest, PACN, and so much more. This is the final goodbye to our awesome Thing Crew. Farewell Friendship Games 2014, I bid you adieu. We asked the social chair and two hype leaders their favorite

parts of Friendship games, as well as the difficulty of preparing for it. “My favorite part of Friendship Games was finally getting to see Barkada all together and dressed in our costumes. Once we finally got to Fullerton and everyone was completely dressed up it finally hit me that it was that day. I love dressing up for anything so to see us all together and to see all my months of hard work finally coming together was a great

feeling. The hardest part about preparing was the lack of time we had to prepare for them. Most schools start way before us giving them more time to prepare for the games part of Friendship Games. Since we’re on the quarter system it makes it a little more difficult, but we always make do.”

Jocelyn San Luis “Oh man, there were so many. Some of my favorite parts were the 6-way SPUF circle, SPUFing with CSUN & LMU, and seeing all of my friends again from other schools.”“Definitely the hardest part of preparing for Friendship Games was coming

up with the chants. It was difficult to think of chants that related to our theme this year that still had the same energy as other chants.”

Bryan Naguit “My favorite part of friendship games was meeting a lot of the new freshmen and transfers. Also, I really liked dressing up as a Thing. The hardest part of preparing for friendship

games was probably teaching people how to be hyped, especially for the people going to friendship games for the first time this year. But y’all ended up doing a great job so thank you!! Remember, stupid is cool and cool is stupid!”

PAHM By: Oliver Rafols

The month of October is usually associated with Halloween and the fall season. It also happens to be Pilipino American Heritage Month. So how did Barkada celebrate the month of October? Well, we celebrated it with numerous cultural workshops celebrating the rich culture, heritage, and traditions of Pilipinos and Pilipino Americans living in the United States. This year, my PAHM co-coordinator Marian Sobretodo, and I led interactive workshops for the members to gain a gr greater understanding of the Pilipino culture. There also was a theme for PAHM, which was progression. This year’s workshops ranged from learning about Pilipino history to learning about what Pilipinos and Pilipino Americans deal with in today’s society. The ideology behind the theme of progression was wanting to educate the community about their past, so they can apply it to what they currently deal with in the present, so they can take steps to progress and better themselves in the future, whether as an individual or as an entire culture. With that being said, I really do hope that the members gained a greater sense of the Pilipino culture that goes beyond the modern day stereotypes that they encounter, and hopefully they use what they learned in our workshops to progress into greater individuals who are just getting by in life. To the members and those who came out to our workshops, thanks for celebrating Pilipino American Heritage Month with us, and we hope that you all embrace the Pilipino culture beyond PAHM. Maraming salamat.

SCARY STORIES NIGHT Scary stories night has been a standing tradition within Barkada. On a dark and cold night in the middle of the week, members of Barkada gathered at their second home, the API. Here they shared stories and experiences of frightening and often supernatural occurrences in the dim candlelight. Some stories included personal interactions with mythological creatures from the Philippines. Guys, be careful of the aswangs, duendes, creatures with c glowing red eyes, and the “moo moo here. In addition to the general members that convened at the API for a night of terror, alumni graced us with their presence. Former President of Barkada and Co-founder of Pilipino Graduation, Iris Paras Magboo and James Yap offered their own personal anecdotes and experiences with paranormal activity. Hopefully Hopeful everyone had a great time sharing stories and getting spooked.

Bryan “At the very beginning of summer, I started asking around for people who wanted to dance Tinikling as well as figuring out who I wanted my coordinators to be. Once that was all set, we held practices every week from August until the week of FPAC.” “Definitely. A few of the dancers dropped out in the beginning, so the team really wasn’t set in stone until late August. There were also some complications between SCPASA and Fil-Am Arts, but I think Aaron and Carolyn handled the situation well.”

ABC Fashion

Simplicity is key. A side zip or scoop neck should be the only form of detailing that appears on your tall tee. Skip the baroque patterns and extravagant typography that will undoubtedly be applied to many items in an effort to appear ‘street’. Stick to plain colours and let the length make the statement – there’s no need to overcomplicate things..

Bringing back Novelty Prints! Here’s some great news about Fall 2014: it isn’t boring. Even if on the most casual pieces, bright, loud, novelty prints bring looks to life!

Fall fashio

y. This is a strictly casual look. Don’t try to incorporate long length tees or shirts into a formal or smartcasual ensemble. Classic cuts should be preferred when dressing up, as opposed to this more contemporary, fashion-forward silhouette. Sometimes it really is better to ignore fashion altogether and side with timeless style.
