THE JOY OF EXPECTATION Gill Sherry

T

here’s something quite satisfying about buying a new calendar. All those empty boxes just waiting to be filled: lunch dates, holidays, birthday parties. Our 2020 calendars were sadly redundant from March onwards, the crossings out and blank pages a reminder of a troubled year in which weddings were postponed, trips were cancelled and schools were closed. Ever the optimist, my new calendar sits expectantly in my desk drawer, just waiting for me to hang it on the wall and display its long term plans. I’ve even had the audacity to scribble notes against some of the dates, my words an exact duplication of those from 2020. Admittedly, they’re written in pencil but I live in hope of their permanence. Usually, holidays are the first thing to appear on our calendar, the week-long stretch of letters representing the promise of adventure and the opportunity to explore somewhere new. 2020 didn’t just deny us the holiday itself, it robbed us of the sweet anticipation; the pleasure of counting down the days to that decadent day trip to Dubai, an indulgent outing to Istanbul or a jolly jaunt to Jeddah. I lost count of the number of times we rearranged our holidays this year, our plans to explore remote mountain villages, bustling bazaars and historical towns being pushed from spring to summer, from summer to autumn, until eventually they were cancelled altogether. Admittedly, in between lockdowns, we did manage two short trips away but although temporarily appeased, things were obviously far from normal. Most visitor attractions remained closed and of those that did open, few agreed on their interpretation of the appropriate coronavirus guidelines. The resulting chaos was laughable, our bemused smiles thankfully hidden behind our ever-present masks. Although keen to get away, I’ve yet to succumb to the lure of a long haul flight. Of course, I miss the excitement of exploring a new city – the magical markets of Marrakesh, the rambling ruins of Rome – but, like many, I’m lacking the confidence required to take the plunge and book a flight, the rules regarding masks, social distancing and quarantine not enamouring me to busy airports, long flights or congested cities. Consequently, the twelve expectant pages of my calendar remain void of visits to European capitals or crowded beaches.

With no major holidays to look forward to, I’m relying on other events to provide the joy of expectation, the promise of good times and the making of memories. In January this year, we celebrated the wedding of our friends, Laura and David. It was, so we thought, the first of seven weddings we were to enjoy in 2020. The destinations were far and wide so it wasn’t just the ceremonies themselves we were looking forward to, it was the promised days of socialising that came with it. Sadly, all six of the remaining weddings were postponed. As a result, my hat is gathering dust at the top of my wardrobe and the invitations, artfully designed and lovingly written, came to a grizzly end at the bottom of the rubbish bin. Although each wedding has now been rearranged (not forgetting the honeymoons) there is still a cloud of doubt hanging over the nuptials, the first of which is due to take place on 1st May, the last on 5th June. The lack of communication from each of the betrothed is, I fear, a clear indication of the uncertainty that continues to threaten their wedding plans, despite news of a long-awaited vaccine. Like most people, I’m simply wishing for normality to resume. Those precious days out with family and friends. Those fun evenings of laughter and cheer. The simple things that, prior to this year, we all took for granted. The jovial atmosphere in our favourite restaurant. The simple pleasure of shopping with friends. Leaving the house without hand sanitizer and a mask. As much as we’d all like 2021 to begin with a brand new chapter, the last one will end on such a cliff hanger it’s impossible for us to move forward. That acute sense of uncertainty is denying us the simple pleasure of living our lives. As our result, our calendars and diaries remain blank. As I write this article, news of a vaccine is dominating the headlines and the world dares to believe that victory over the virus is imminent. That said, distributing and administering the vaccine is likely to take months. In the meantime, normality, it seems, is still a distant dream. So, whilst the scientists endeavour to find a safe, effective and practical solution and world leaders continue to pontificate from their lecterns, the rest of us must gaze longingly at our calendars, the blank squares an ominous reminder that the only thing still able to travel without restriction, is the virus. www.cpmagazine.net

WINTER IN ASPEN Latifah Al-Hazza

There’s something about skiing in Aspen that is incomparable to any other winter destination in the United States. Aspen, located in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, is known for offering world-class skiing and snowboarding. With four popular mountains and an elevation of 2,438.4 meters, it’s no surprise that people from all over the world travel to experience the adventure and beauty of Aspen. Although Aspen is a ski resort town, it is also popular year-round for the various seasonal outdoor activities offered. Aspen is also most commonly known as a luxury getaway with high-end restaurants and boutiques. Overall, Aspen does not fail in being a memorable vacation destination. Get the most out of your Aspen vacation with this four-day itinerary. www.cpmagazine.net

13

Day 1: Arrival Day

Arrive at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE). Grab your luggage and head outside to look for your complimentry transportation to your luxury hotel and condo, The Gant. The Gant – This luxury hotel and condo resort was built in 1973 and is comprised of 140 individually owned condos. Each condo has a similar layout (depending on room type), but the décor varies. The condos are incredibly spacious with ample amounts of storage and workspace. Washers and dryers are in the condo or are on-site. Traveler Tip: Book a condo with an extra bedroom for maximum storage space for equipment. Head to Four Mountain Sports to get fitted for your ski/snowboard day. The best part is they will deliver your equipment to the slopes, so you don’t have to worry about picking it up the next morning. Grab an outdoor lunch with a view at Ajak Tavern. Recommendation: Lobster Mac & Cheese. Stop by City Market for any miscellaneous items or snacks you may need during your stay. Relax by the fireplace in your condo (everything is provided to facilitate starting a fire) or soak in the hot tub at The Gant. 14

15

Day 2: Slopes Day

Stop by Local Coffee House on your way to Ajak Mountain for coffee and a light breakfast. Pick up your equipment at the gondola at the bottom of Ajak Mountain. Enjoy your day on the mountain! Be sure to take a look at the mountain map to determine which route is best for your ski/snowboard level. The Sundeck, located at the top of the mountain, is a great place to stop for a break or to grab a bite. Head back to the condo, unwind, maybe take a nap, and then get ready for dinner. Dinner at the most adorable, coziest spot, French Alpine Bistro, is a must! Recommendation: Bistro Bowl, Ratatouille and Crepe Suzette.

Day 3: Exploration Day

Start the day with heli-snowmobiling (can be booked through The Gant). A helicopter will take you to 300,000 acres of forested Rocky Mountain backcountry terrain where you’ll snowmobile for four hours (with a stop for lunch) before taking the helicopter back into town. The small town of Aspen is bustling with trendy clothing boutiques, designer shops, ski wear and a variety of other stores. After a morning of adventure, it’s only right to take the time to walk the quaint streets and shop. Head back to the condo to get dressed for and Italian dinner at L’Hostaria. Recommendation: Melanzane Alla Parmigiana, Insalata Caprese, Tagliolini All’Astice, and Zuppa Di Pesce.

Day 4: Slopes Day

Finishing off your time in Aspen. Head to Snowmass Mountain and try their runs. Again, reserve your equipment with Four Mountain Sports the day before and they’ll send it to the base of the mountain. This is extremely convenient today as Snowmass is about a 20 - 30 minute drive from Aspen. Lounge around for lunch at mix6 where there is amazing outdoor seating and often a DJ that helps wrap up your day with great vibes. Recommendation: Vegetarian Mix Bowl. You can’t leave Aspen without dining at Matsuhisa, by Chef Nobu. And why not save the best for last? Everything on the menu will not disappint with exceptional service as well.

16

DECEMBER 2020

Helpful Tips while in Aspen: lThe best ways to get around are by local bus, Uber/Lyft or The Gant’s complimentary guest bus. lIf you are a beginner skier/snowboarder, I recommend starting on Buttermilk or Snowmass Mountain before heading to Ajak or Highlands. lReserve all restaurants in advance as they tend to book up quickly.

Hi, first of all, please introduce us to Lamya Al-Anbaie – the image consultant and the person?

Lamya Al-Anbaie is a 39 years old Kuwaiti woman and the owner of the B-talk Artistic Beauty consultations and a personal beauty advisor.

Tell us about your education?

My complete studies was from schools of Kuwait and I graduated with bachelors degree in media, radio and television from Kuwait University with a second major in General Management.

How did you develop the interest for beauty?

I think beauty found me in every way. It started since I was a child. My parents noticed my interest in art in all its kinds. I loved working with my hands starting with painting and ending with sculpturing with clay. Because I am a diabetic patient I was always going to dermatology clinics to solve my skin problems and with the entry of fillers in Kuwait, I developed my interest in beauty because the way fillers sculpted the face reminded me of my love and passion in sculpting .

What special training did you have to undergo before starting a career as Beauty Advisor?

I got many certificates from the doctors I worked with in my 15 years career in the beauty field. Also, I believe in self–development. I have continuous interest in studying body language and facial expressions along with many other beauty related educational courses.

What is the meaning of Personal Beauty Advisor?

The personal Beauty Advisor is an expert that has experience in the field of cosmetology which helps clients find the right solutions for their cosmetic problems.

When did you launch your official business (The B-talk)? The B-talk was lunched before 4 years.

What challenges you had to face initially and how did you overcome them?

One of the main challenges was gaining the clients trust and convincing them with their customized cosmetic plan that will enhance their beauty. People are always afraid from change even if it’s the best for them. I overcome this challenge with one thing, which is honesty and credibility. With all the good feedback from clients today people do trust the B-talk company.

Can you briefly explain your process with a client?

The process is simple. First we have a primary consultation at the office to determine the clients personal goals. Helping them to understand their own facial structure and set a suitable cosmetic plan for them. The second visit for the client will be at the doctor's clinic where the plan becomes a reality with my guidance and doctor's help the plan is implemented. Once the cosmetic procedure is done the client gets a last follow up appointment to ensure that all our goals are achieved.

DECEMBER 2020

Do you collaborate with beauty clinics and beauty salons?

Yes, there is collaboration with several clinics to get the best quality and discounts for my client and secure the availability of appointments without having to be listed on a waiting list.

What makes your service unique?

What makes my service unique is that actually we are the one and only Beauty Advisory service in Kuwait and the Middle-East. We provide the clients with guidance on how to approach their cosmetic procedures by making sure they only deal with the right professionals and certified clinics.

How Many sessions are typically required for a client with you to get the final results?

From one to two visits only. In very rare cases some clients like to do the plan in several stages.

What was your proudest achievement ?

My proudest achievement is when I handle the severe cases that needs help the most. The happiness in their eyes after they look into the mirror immediately after the cosmetic procedure makes my day.

Could you please describe your typical day?

My day starts early in the morning with my beloved family. Then I go to the clinic and office for my clients and return back home at night.

What is your own beauty regime?

My beauty regime is always done at the clinic through some private sessions that I have approved and seen great result from for several years.

What is your main source of inspiration when it comes to staying up to date with the latest beauty trends? My inspiration comes from the elderly women who invest in their beauty and are always keen to have a healthy and fit body and an enhanced face despite their age.

How do you detox and refresh from work?

I detox from work by having a short vacation with my family from time to time.

What is your motto in life?

"what goes around comes around."

What are some of your hobbies?

Painting, clay sculpting, crafts, writing and photography.

Your message for us at CP magazine.

I hope one day my message will reach most people which is my belief that every person is beautiful in their own unique way and that the cosmetic beauty plan will help highlight that beauty in people in better way. People should feel better both from the inside and outside.

FormerlyMe.com presents “Summer Time Sessions”

WHAT IS FORMERLYME?

FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “On the Go” days of my journey.

Jim West

W

hen I started my journey with FormerlyMe in November 2019, my first trainer was the great Gene Labrada. After several months doing so many different workouts and fitness programs I felt it was time for a second round of weight training with one of the best trainers around today. We dubbed our six sessions through the summer as the “Summer Sessions”. My new goal was to start applying more weight training versus cardio to see the long-term benefits from muscle gain. Gene would be the right trainer to get me started on this new goal. 28

DECEMBER 2020

For months I had been doing heavy cardio workouts and losing lots of weight. Now that I was focused on muscle development I knew that old saying that ‘muscle weighs more than fat’ statement would mean I would have to ditch the scales for a while and focus on how I felt and looked in my clothes than the number on the scale. This mindset would help me tremendously as the numbers on a scale can fluctuate vastly given water weight and many other factors. The idea that muscles will increase calorie burn over the long run was the key I was now focused on. Muscles will burn calories after you are done working out. Whereas cardio burns calories immediately and when you are done with cardio the burning effect is essentially over. This would be a new shift and approach to my body transformation that I was very excited to take on.

I soon found out that I was still sweating up a storm with weightlifting almost as much as I did when doing cardio. Gene helped me identify muscle groups to workout and set a pace that would not be to stressful on my body. Within a couple weeks I started to see results and was very happy to see myself growing stronger and stronger day by day. Nothing is more rewarding than feeling your body is strong. I simply cannot express how that feels, but wish for you all reading this to dedicate time to seeing what your body is capable of. The great Socrates is quoted as saying, “No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” I was so appreciative of Gene and everything he had done for me with FormerlyMe that I rewarded him and myself for everything we had achieved this far with Championship belts. Gene will forever be a huge part of FormerlyMe and I will always be tremendously indebted to him for his knowledge, compassion, patience, and encouragement along my journey. People of Gene’s caliber are few and far between and the world would be a much better place with more people like him in it. Thank you Gene.

Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my return to Legacy Barbell and Gene Labrada for more weight training. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial www.cpmagazine.net

34

DECEMBER 2020

Tell us about your education.

I graduated from Kuwait University with a bachelors degree in “Geology” and a masters degree in “Petroleum engineering and geology”.

How and when did you become interested in bodybuilding?

This passion grew up with me since my childhood. I always looked after athletes pictures and stories in sports magazines. I used to search and learn about this sport by asking and learning from best coaches in the world. I fell in love with this sport since I was 14 years old and am digging deeply year after year. Especially, when I see how it affects me mentally and physically in a positive way.

Provide some background for the readers (height, age, contest weight, competition history).

I am 174cm. Usually in my category “figure” they don’t consider the weight as a requirement. Figure competitors are divided into groups due to their heights not weights. About my competitions, I did 9 ifbb/NPC international shows. All placed as: 5th place in Winter Classic, Florida, 2015 3rd place in Natural Ironman, LA, 2016 6th place in Arnold Classic South Africa, 2016 2nd place in Gold Coast, LA, 2017 6th place in Phill Heath, Dallas, 2017 5th place in Arnold Classic, OH, 2018 2nd place in Mr/Ms Buffalo, TX, 2018 3rd place in Pittsburgh Championships, PA, 2018 1st place in Caribbean Grand Prix, Bahamas, 2018 & 2nd overall

Was your family supportive of your bodybuilding goals? What are the prevailing attitudes towards bodybuilding within the Arab-Muslim Female community?

As you may know that the idea of a Muslim woman that compete on a stage with a certain outfit is not an acceptable idea in the Arab region. Yes, I broke the rules and built my own history with my own achievements. Initially I didn’t get a lot of family support as you know this is something new and not acceptable to a lot of people. But, at the end I could own their respect and their full support. I did many things to win my people's respect and appreciation by deleting all of my stage photos and videos even from Youtube, Google, and Instagram accounts. Also from the contest websites. Some of them asked for a fee and I accepted it and deleted everything because I wanted to respect my family and my people. I want to respect their ideology and the Islamic beliefs. Since I am living in this community, people start showing their respect and admiring my hardwork and my respected personality. Eventually, my trophies and medals can speak about my

achievements instead of my postures and videos. Nothing better than being the people’s champion with respect.

If you had to define all that you do in a title, what would you say? searching for the glory.

How would you describe your philosophy about being fit and healthy?

First of all, the successful workout and diet should fit and evolve your lifestyle and it finds you moving your body in a way that makes you happy. That’s why I always advise people not to train for any special event only. Rather train for life. Because your life is your biggest challenge, so train to beat it. Fitness is more than looking good. Its feeling good on both the inside and outside. My fitness philosophy is to become the best version of me. Challenge myself everyday with my goals. We have only one life, one body, and one chance, that’s why we should take care of it.

What has been your greatest bodybuilding achievement, and why? Have there been any disappointing moments?

My best achievement was holding the trophy and the medal on one of the biggest strongest bodybuilding competition; “Arnold Classic Ohio“ in 2018 with honour. It was the best moment in my competing journey. I worked so hard and it was my hardest preparation ever but at the end all this pain and suffering was worth it. The most disappointed moment I lived was in my last show in Bahamas when I was supposed to take the overall winning title and win the pro card. But as you know things always happen under the table in this sport and It wasn’t my lucky day. I worked so hard to win the pro card in that competition but at the end I always say “It's our God’s willing”. No matter what these moments, it always makes me stronger and better and I always wish the best for the other competitors and try to motivate them and encourage them before stepping on the stage even if we are competing against each other. I believe bodybuilding sport is a sport of manners.

Describe the experience of competing in your first pro show. Where did you place? Did you arrive in the type of physical shape you were hoping to? The first competition is always the hardest. Not only physically, but also mentally. It was in Florida 2015 where I placed 5th and was really a good place as my first show. I remember that I was super excited and selfconfident with some nervous feeling of course. No one would reach his/her best shape in the first show. It takes time, hard work, commitment, and discipline to reach the best shape of our bodies. It develops more and more and show after show.

www.cpmagazine.net

35

What are some tips you have for people looking to get into shape?

Always believe to achieve. Always trust your abilities, your process, your work and your coach. Always love the pain you feel because the pain you feel today will be the strength you get tomorrow. Be patient, be strong, be unstoppable, and never stop until you are proud. If others could, then I can. If I could, then you can. Just BELIEVE and always surround yourself with positive people.

What mistakes do people make when working out?

Mostly, they don’t focus. I see a lot of people depend on lifting heavy weights more than focusing and that’s wrong. Heavy weight is not the key, FOCUSING is. They should always connect their mind with their muscles. Train in a clever way with focusing even with light/medium weights you can get that perfect body if you FOCUS. Another mistake is that they spend hours and hours lifting which is totally wrong. It should never take more than an hour for lifting. For sure some wrong techniques can cause a lot of injuries and many other mistakes. But, it will takes a lot of time to explain it.

What’s your favorite quote or mantra you live by? What are some of your other hobbies?

My famous quote is “BELIVE TO ACHIEVE”. I also have a tattoo with that quote. Believe it or not, I am a horse rider too. I started that sport even before I started competing. I admire riding horses so much that it's in my blood too. Soon, I will bring back that sport of mine again.

Who or what gives you the most inspiration?

I have good friends all around the world that always support me and motivate me. But the biggest supportive person is my husband. He is a bodybuilding champion too from Oman. He always motivates me, supports me, and be there for me whenever I need him. what gives me the most inspiration is seeing people that I help everyday smiling and getting better with better bodies and health. Their kind words and prayers for me is the biggest inspiration for me to keep doing what I am doing by coaching them. Teaching them and increasing their sport culture and also the way the people are looking at me as an idol is something to be proud of.

How has the fitness scene affected by the pandemic?

Describe your current training routine and diet. Of course! The pandemic affected this fitness scene in a negative way. Gyms were closed for long time and that affected a lot of competitors in a bad. The competitions were stopped but there is always a good side coming from every dark side. As you know being healthy and an athlete helps our immune system to rise up. So always try to get healthy life no matter if the gyms are closed. Working out and eating healthy can be done everywhere anywhere. Now, I am following low carb high protein diet. Eating 5 to 6 meals a day. No cheat meals until my coach allow me to. I work out 6 days a week and I never skip my morning cardio even in my off days. I put 100% in my workout and diet plan. It's all about keeping moving and never stopping.

36

DECEMBER 2020

Do you think bodybuilding is a healthy sport?

THE BOHEMIAN RETREAT! With a number of alternative room types, from trailers to yurts to teepees and tents, El Cosmico is the perfect spot for the nomadic spirit and adventurous traveler.

www.cpmagazine.net

Located on 21-acres on the edge of Marfa, Texas, in the United States of America, El Cosmico is a community lodging concept conceived by Bunkhouse hotelier Liz Lambert, the creative force behind Austin’s Hotel San José and Hotel Saint Cecilia. Bunkhouse’s vision was to create a communal retreat that cultivates artistic engagement and offers a temporary retreat from the modern world. Collaborating with architecture firm Lake/Flato and a creative team of artists and builders, Bunkhouse has created an artistic campground of trailers, yurts, tepees, tents and communal hangouts. Accommodations at El Cosmico include restored vintage trailers, made by Vagabond, Spartan, Branstrator, Kozy Coach and Airstream in the mid 20th century, all which feature marine varnished birch interiors and a unique blend of vibrant furnishings and décor, as well as a limited edition micro-home designed and built in collaboration with Kasita. The safari and scout tents, Sioux-style tepees, yurts and tent campsites accommodate those looking for a more rustic experience, and all include access to the communal outdoor kitchen and bath house. El Cosmico’s common spaces, a hammock grove, an outdoor kitchen and dining area, a community lounge and mercantile, an outdoor stage, and a reading room, are dispersed throughout the grounds. With limited access to digital connectivity, a pause from the modern world is the basis of El Cosmico’s appeal. The lodging concept encourages a “get your hands dirty” philosophy through

regular on-site creative workshops and events that focus on cooking, crafts, and live music, as well as back-to-basic activities, including stargazing, biking and exploring Marfa. El Cosmico is located just outside the city limits of the cultural mecca Marfa. The town is equally influenced by its cattle ranching legacy, its proximity to Mexico and the vibrant migration of artists from big cities who have been drawn to Marfa since the early 1970’s for its serenity and mystic quality of light. Here you will see a real cowboy and a major work of art in the same afternoon. What is not desert was once ocean, dinosaur homeland and Apache territory. There is talk of an inexplicable, elusive phenomenon of lights. Marfa sits amidst some of the Southwest’s best natural and built wonders, including Bing Bend State and National Parks, McDonald Observaroty, Chinati Hot Springs, the Davis Mountains and Balmorhea. In addition to the annual music festival, Trans-Pecos Festival of Music + Love, held each fall on-site, El Cosmico has curated a unique program of events and workshop retreats, exploring cooking, building, and songwriting, which are designed to inspire guests to exercise their creative passions. Reoccurring major events include Big City Camp Cooking, Camp Design Build Adventure, and Sunset Soundtracks.

Behnood Javaherpour was born into a family involved in design and textiles in Tehran; Iran. His father was the pioneer of designing and producing camping equipment in Iran at the time. Behnood’s mother was an antique dealer who was also involved in the thriving textile world. As a child, Behnood grew up in a household of creativity and colour - hence his passion for art and design developed very early on in his life. Drawing and painting became second nature to him and he loved his little sketchbook where he used to take everywhere with him. He spent his primary school years in Tehran and learnt about the different materials and fabrics from his dad’s trade. Behnood fell in love with the world of textiles and fabrics and started doing collage boards with different coloured materials to make garments for his sketches. The designer always had a special eye for fashion and was very curious and observant of the outfits people wore around him. He started to develop his passion for fashion as he grew into a teenager and believed strongly that he can have a major influence in this industry. He believed that due to socio-economic situation, Iranians were limited in their choices of clothing and that they became very distanced and estranged with the world of fashion. He wanted to change that and the only way to do it was to master the industry through knowledge and experience. Behnood moved to Italy at the age of 17 and whilst studying, he also started working with the local tailors learning the trade during his vacations. This experience was a huge learning curve for Behnood as he was able to learn the tricks of the trade first hand and gain the confidence required to create garments. He started designing and tailoring outfits and this became a full time job after he finished his high school. Behnood managed to save money and funded his further education at the Politecnico di Milano where he studied International Business and then later he went on to Instituto Marangoni to continue his passion and enthusiasm for fashion. He graduated in 2005 and by then his label Behnoode was established in Napoli. After years of successful business in Italy, Behnood has extended his brand into the Middle Eastern market where his outfits are popular amongst the young professionals. Behnood has also managed to inspire and attract the young Iranians with his unique yet simple designs and is proud to have been able to influence the fashion industry in that region. He strongly believed that one day he will bring back colour, design and style to his people and the Middle East, and today he has achieved this goal. His latest collection pays homage to the Iranian art world. This highly artistic vibrant collection merges couture, carpets and paintings. A collaboration that fuses creative minds from different perspectives to bring you another form of art. Behnoode blends couture fabrics inspired by renowned painters Wahed Khakdan, Mohsen Ahmadvand, Mehrdad Mohebali and Ali Akbar Sadeghi to transform his jackets into art pieces. The collection is a collaboration and a celebration of Persian textiles and fabrics. A historical heritage that infuses both glamour and luxury on a backdrop of majestic mountains. As fabrics intertwine to create intricate designs, producing carpets and clothing that honor the Persian ancestry. Fashion and culture combine to ensure our customs and tradition are able to thrive. 46

City Pages Magazine: When did you begin to develop a passion for Art? Cho Yea Jae: Whenever I have this kind of question I always

seem to have a difficult time to answer it accurately to let others understand ‘my life with Art’ well enough. It is hard to say when I began to develop a passion for art in particular. It is a matter of how to define the meaning of ‘a Passion for Art’ or an ‘Artist’. “I was happy every time I created something. Whether it was writing, acting, dancing, painting or drawing, I sought to express my feelings and my own thoughts”. One thing I am sure of is that I always wanted to be an Artist. I have painted since I was very young and always wanted to paint more. I have lived my life enjoying the Arts, working in Arts, creating Art even though my life journey didn’t let me do it easily.

CP: Do you remember the first piece of Art you made? What was it and how old were you? CYJ: This is related to the previous question, it is not easy at all for me to define the first piece of Art that I made. I have painted since I was very young, most of all I still play with Art like a child at play. Remember when we were children and played with our favorite toys, pets, ants, water on the ground, and sand on the beach… without knowing time flies, feeling hungry or thirsty. What I remember well is the first painting that was sold at my first exhibition in 2000 in Hong Kong. CP: Tell us about your particular style and how you

came to it?

CYJ: My life journey such as numerous experiences and

countless choices that I made, all became the elements of who I am now. With one missing out I would not be who I am today and what I paint now. I have encountered various people, cultures, histories/ stories and landscapes during my many travels… I also lived in many countries throughout my life (in fact I lived half of my life overseas). What I learnt from this life journey is that each place has its own charm and colour, not only Koreans but also other people have a strong attachment to their own culture and history. All of this is part of the personal worldview of describing myself as a citizen of the world.

CP: Tell us more about your creative process? What

kind of creative patterns, routines, or rituals do you have?

CYJ: Painting minimal means that I must create as minimal an image as possible although I have so many things to say and draw on canvas after the long tortuous journeys of my mind and soul. Procedure reducing and omitting the unnecessary sketches and colors on the imaginary canvas in my mind is a very similar act to simplify us at a certain time in our lives to pursue happiness and wisdom. I believe that the ‘More minimal it is, a more philosophical view is hidden.’ Developing new techniques, new textures, and my own brushstrokes is not only essential to having my own artistic identity but also very important to express myself the most through my Minimal Art. On top of this, I believe experimentation with durable colors and researching higher quality materials is a moral responsibility as an artist. Finding a balance between my art and myself is also another important element of my creative process, just as important as developing a process to get to the perfect result. For example, I love to take slow strolls in nature when I feel drained by people or by busy surroundings. Only nature can heal me completely according to my life experience. It calms me, pampers me, and relaxes my five senses. The sound of waves, the soft and tender breeze, birds flying here and there with funny sounds, the shining silvery blue sea, a green tree with crawling cats, a honey bee with its round cute hip up in the sky, flitting from flower to flower… I get energy from nature and then it will all happen automatically. Loosen up, smile in my heart, and my brain becomes relaxed. From within and then looking around, just enjoy the moment and my surroundings, and my imagination takes me further by sketching the images in my mind. 52

DECEMBER 2020

CP: How would you describe your

paintings in your own words?

CYJ: The few words that describe best my work and my style are: Minimal, conceptual, contrast and balance. I believe that the more minimal my work is, the more philosophical viewpoints it conceals.

CP: Do you intend your work to

challenge the viewer? What does your work aim to say?

CYJ: Once my creations are out of my hands,

what people feel about my work is no longer under my control. It is entirely up to them. While some of my paintings also attempt to woo & challenge the viewer, I also wish to give my audience a break from this hectic world and share a moment of respite and abstraction.

CP: What is your philosophy in matters of Art?

CYJ: Philosophy, psychology, and science help me understand the world by applying logic and intellect. Ultimately, art and philosophy are more intertwined than we think. Art needs a philosophical focal point to delve deeper. Philosophy needs artistic flexibility to think and open up to the outside. CP: What challenges did you face in

starting a career as an international Artist?

CYJ: My first exhibition was in 2000 in Hong Kong. After overcoming many life obstacles I finally managed to become a full time artist in 2010 before having a featured exhibition in early 2011. Since then I have been featured in several solo exhibitions and also joined group exhibitions in various different countries. Every little step that I took as an international artist has never been easy on me. It is the big challenge and adventure of my life. CP: You have exhibited across Asia, in

the US, in France. When in the GCC countries?

CYJ: If given the opportunity I would love to show my works in Kuwait and other GCC countries with my honor. CP: What is up next for you? CYJ: I am currently perfecting my Korean

Traditional painting skills to bring unexpected surprises for my next projects. It will show East meets West.

Reid’s assured debut has won her rave reviews, chart-topping sales,.

Longlisted for the National Book Award, Brit Bennett’s ambitious novel follows two identical twin sisters from a small Southern town. A Life on Our Planet: My Witness

by Matt Haig

Statement and a Vision for the Future

This year’s Goodreads Choice Award for Fiction was the closest contest in the history of the awards. Your winner—by five votes—is The Midnight Library, author Matt Haig’s wildly inventive blend of literary and speculative fiction. The quick gist: Imagine a library in which each book represents a different path your life could have taken. Now imagine spending eternity in that library.

With his definitive witness statement of life on planet Earth, naturalist, journalist, and planetary defender David Attenborough wins this year’s Goodreads Choice Award in Science & Technology. Sir Attenborough’s book is part testimony, part memoir, and part urgent call to arms. It provides a vision for the future in which, through collective action, we can still save Earth’s wild places. But we’ll have to act fast.

Mexican Gothic

The Guest List

by Elizabeth Acevedo

by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

by Lucy Foley

Elizabeth Acevedo wins this year’s Goodreads Choice Award for Young Adult Fiction with a powerful novelin-verse about love, loss, and family. Camino and Yahaira Rios didn’t even know they were sisters until their father died in a plane crash. Now they’re learning more than they want to know about the ties (and knots) that bind families together. Bonus trivia: Acevedo is a National Poetry Slam champion, too.

If it seemed like everyone you knew was reading Mexican Gothic this year, that’s because they were. Author Silvia Moreno-Garcia (“Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination”) collects the Horror prize for 2020 with a pitch-perfect Gothic horror story in the old-school mode, but with contemporary perspectives on race and colonialism. Spooky mansions! Opulent decay! Bumps in the night!

Lucy Foley ran away with this year’s Mystery & Thriller award by inviting us to the best wedding ever! And by “best” we mean “most terrifying.” Jules and Will have chosen to hold their wedding on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. Then the storm hits. Then the body is found. It’s like the old Irish adage: It’s not a party until somebody ends up dead.

BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIES Othman Qalfas

Holidays are a happy season, and how can we enjoy December without having Christmas Spirit. We all love certain movies that has the Christmas theme. So here are some of my favorite movies that you have to see alone or with family or even with your partner.

Home Alone 1&2 (1990&1992). Who doesn't know this movie? It doesn't matter how many times you watched it, you will always watch it again. Kevin who got forgotten finds himself alone by himself at home. Faced by challenges and protecting his house from robbers. This is the story of the first part and I think you already know the story of the second part. Please I don't advice you to see the other parts after that one.

Elf (2003). When "Will Ferrel" who is supposed to be an elf and discover that he is a human living in the North Pole. He decide to get back and search for his real father. A goofy and funny movie to watch. I promise that you will enjoy your time while watching this movie. 64

DECEMBER 2020

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966, 2000 & 2018). This movie is devided into three parts and they all repeat the same story and all the movies are written by Dr. Seuss. The difference between first movie is an animation was produced in 1966. Then we have the second one that was produced in 2000 and it's staring Jim Carey who did an excellent performance. A great, funny and wonderful movie to watch. The last and third movie was produced in 2018 and it's also animated movie. You should watch them all but I recommend Jim Carey movie.

The Polar Express (2004). How can you miss this animation movie specially when it's staring "Tom Hanks". Adventures and Magical journey that will take you to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. It's a good move that you don't want to miss with the whole family. Just Start Believing.

The Santa Clause 1,2&3 (1994, 2002 & 2006). This movie is about the man who saved Christmas, when he killed the real Santa by mistake. This movie has three parts with different story. both of them focus on the family and how it's important. Children will love it.

Last Christmas (2019). This Movie is set for Christmas of course and for couples to watch it together. Although this movie isn't produced from a long time but it will leave an effect on you. it was produced last year in 2019 and staring Emilia Clarke with Emma Thompson. A comedy, dramatic and romantic movie to watch on Christmas. It will keep you both united.

AL HAMRA BUSINESS TOWER GOES ORANGE Awareness-raising movement in association with UNiTE and UN Women to end violence against Women

Burgan Bank K.P.S.C., Kuwait’s second largest conventional bank by asset size, successfully placed US$500 million Subordinated Tier 2 Capital Securities (bonds) in the international debt capital markets. With an eleven-year tenor, and an option for redemption after six years from the date of their issuance, the bonds’ term structure is the first of its kind from the GCC. The bonds comply with the Basel III regulatory framework, as adopted by the Central Bank of Kuwait. The transaction came on the back of calls with global, institutional investors from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Investors took comfort in the Bank’s sound business strategy, strong credit fundamentals, and the bonds’ A- rating by Fitch. The orderbook saw strong momentum - with participation from more than 160 investors, its size peaked at US$2 billion (excluding JLMs’ interest), representing a 4x oversubscription rate. This allowed the Bank to place the bonds at a coupon rate of 2.75% per annum, which translated to a margin of 222.9bps over the interpolated six-year US Treasury Rate. Demand from a diverse investor base allowed for balanced geographic distribution. The bonds were allocated to investors across Europe 48%, Asia 23%, the Middle East 23%, and US Offshore Accounts 6%. Allocations to different types of accounts were also well balanced between Fund Managers 76%, Banks and Private Banks 19%, and Pension Funds, Agencies and Insurance Companies 5%. Chairman of Burgan Bank Group, Mr. Majed Al-Ajeel stated: “The success of this transaction highlights investors’ confidence in the Bank’s board and executive management, and its strategic direction. We would like to thank the Central Bank of Kuwait and the Capital Markets Authority for their support of this unprecedented transaction”. The Vice Chairman and Group CEO of Burgan Bank Group, Mr. Masaud Hayat commented: “The high demand for the bonds from international investors reflects their confidence in the Bank’s strategy and its credit fundamentals, which also support the bonds’ A- rating by Fitch”. Mr. Raed Al-Haqhaq, Deputy GCEO & Chief Executive Officer - Kuwait remarked: “We are very pleased to close yet another inaugural debt capital markets transaction from the region. The support provided by the Bank’s advisors was indispensable for the transaction’s success”. As one of the first Kuwaiti companies to sign the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPS) on the UN site, Al Hamra honored its part in the world-wide movement by lighting it’s iconic Business Tower ‘orange’ on 25th November 2020. To mark the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, the business hub will remain lit until 10th December 2020. The Chief Administrative Officer - CAO of Al Hamra Real Estate Company, Mrs. Abrar Abdulaziz Al Habeeb, stated, “Al-Hamra Real Estate Company values this initiative as it has always supported the role of women on a professional and societal level. We are committed to the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and recognize the important role of the private sector to support efforts in ending violence against women. She also stated, “We believe it is imperative that we, as a society, lend a helping hand to future generations, and are pleased to come together with so many like-minded companies to shine a spotlight on the vital contribution of women in accelerating social-economic growth. Dr. Lubna Alkazi, Director of the Women’s Research and Studies Center in the College of Social Sciences, Kuwait University said, “Al Hamra was one of the first Kuwaiti companies to sign the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPS) on the UN site. By joining the private sector companies in lighting orange from 25th November 2020 to 10th Decembe 2020, it is again emphasizing its role in promoting sustainable development goal 5 on gender empowerment.
