SO, YOU WANT TO BE A WRITER? Gill Sherry

Writing can be a thankless exercise. You pour your heart and soul into producing the perfect prose and, more often than not, nobody reads it. So why do so many people want to write?

Always make sure you do not exceed the maximum word count and try and come up with an original title. If there’s a theme, ensure your entry is relevant.

It is, of course, a form of creativity, and most people do it because they enjoy it. Some are fortunate enough to make a comfortable living from it whilst others (the few whose names we instantly recognise) have accumulated considerable wealth from their written words.

Beware entering competitions with an entry fee. Many writing competitions are advertised online and, if there’s a financial prize, it’s tempting to enter them all. However, do your research! If the entry fee seems high in relation to the prize money, it’s probably just a money-spinner and best avoided. Genuine, worthwhile competitions will have reputable adjudicators and will show details of previous winning entries.

Inevitably, perhaps, the majority associate writing with novels. But you don’t have to write a book to be a writer. Think of those who write articles for magazines or newspapers, and the people who write specifically for stage or television. There are those who write short stories or poetry, others who write essays or news reports, and those who reveal all in their autobiographies. In fact, the list is endless. When embarking on your writing journey, the first thing to establish is exactly what you want to write. This may not be as obvious as it sounds. You may think you want to write a crime novel but when it comes down to it, you may not have the dedication required to complete a lengthy manuscript. It’s important to experiment with genres. How do you know you don’t want to write a children’s story if you’ve never actually tried? Similarly, you might think you’re not very good at poetry, but how do you know if no-one has ever read your poems?

You may also consider checking the website of your favourite author. They often include writing tips and advice on how to get started. You can sign-up to receive newsletters which may give details of creative writing courses and other useful events.

If you don’t have access to a writing group and you don’t feel able to start your own, you may want to consider joining one remotely. If the pandemic has proved one thing, it’s that meetings and events can work just as well online as they do in person.

I have two main tips when advising new writers. Firstly, read as much as you can. The more you read, the more you learn. While you are enjoying the story, subconsciously you are observing things like sentence structure, grammar and dialogue. You will also quickly learn what type of material you prefer to read. Which leads to my second tip: write what you enjoy reading. If you enjoy reading fantasy novels, for example, then try your hand at writing one! If, on the other hand, you tend to favour shorter pieces, then concentrate on writing short stories (1,000 to 2,000 words) or flash fiction (up to 250 words). There is a market for everything!

Writing groups will usually arrange a schedule of competitions. This is a great way to receive critique and to practice different styles of writing.

Have you ever considered writing a memoir? People are fascinated by true stories and by the lives and experiences

One thing that can really help you to identify your preferred genre is to join a writers’ group. This will provide you with the opportunity to try different types of writing from poetry to short stories and from memoirs to novels. If you can’t find a writing group in your area, why not start one? A new year is always a good time to start something new and you’ll be surprised how many people will want to join. Receiving honest feedback from like-minded, supportive individuals can be invaluable.

10

It will help if you know what the adjudicator is looking for. If, for example, they are known for writing romance novels, it’s probably not a good idea to submit a horror-themed entry. You will simply be wasting time and money, so choose your competitions wisely.

of others. I have read countless books written by survivors of the Holocaust. I’ve also read books by people who lived through the Greek Civil War. Books such as these are of significant historical interest. If you were in Kuwait at the time of the Iraqi invasion, you could write about how difficult and traumatic it was or how you coped with the fear and uncertainty. Thinking of more recent times, you may want to record what life was like for you during the COVID pandemic. Writing down your thoughts can be really cathartic as well as educational for future generations. One of the most important things is to take your writing seriously. Give yourself time to experiment and rid yourself of distractions. Find your ideal writing space. It may be a quiet room at home or it could be the corner of your favourite coffee shop. Some people like listening to music, others prefer to write outdoors. It really is just a case of finding what works for you. Quite often, being surrounded by others can be inspiring. And don’t forget that the five senses (sight, sound, touch, smell, taste) can really bring your writing to life. I know many writers who swear by ‘morning pages’. The concept was introduced by Julia Cameron in her book The Artist’s Way and recommends that you write three

pages of longhand text using pen and paper (do NOT use technology) first thing every morning. It should be a stream of continuous writing. Just write what comes into your head - it doesn’t even have to make sense! It’s all about encouraging the flow from your brain to your hand and onto the page. At the very least it will stimulate your creativity. Once you’ve made the decision to write, do so as often as you can. Practice really does make perfect so learn your craft and make sure you proof read the finished piece numerous times. You’d be amazed how easy it is to miss mistakes in your own writing! The most important thing is to never give up. If you believe in yourself and in your writing then keep going! Keep submitting to magazines. Keep submitting to publishers or agents. Nothing beats seeing your name and print, and remember, J K Rowling was turned down by twelve different publishers before finding success with Harry Potter! Whatever your writing aspirations, I hope you achieve them in 2022! www.cpmagazine.net

FIVE PRACTICAL TIPS FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS SETTING OUT TO BUILD A BUSINESS By Pieter Bensch, Executive Vice President, Africa & Middle East at Sage

To ensure sustained economic advancement and growth it is imperative to support youth entrepreneurship. If you're a young person looking to branch out on your own following university, school, or a few years in employment, you are embarking on an exciting journey. The challenges can be daunting, but there is a real sense of freedom and empowerment in running your own business. Here are some practical tips about how you can get started as an entrepreneur.

1. Gain experience if you can

Many young people in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries create their own businesses as the preferered route over employment. However, if the opportunity presents itself, it can be worthwhile to earn some practical experience and start building a network in the workplace before setting out on your own. It may be worth applying for internships to build up skills and knowledge before starting a business. Sage, for example, runs an internship programme that offers young professionals an opportunity to apply their education in a real-world work setting. They are placed in different business functions, including customer services, customer for life, legal, marketing, IT, product delivery, partners and alliances, HR, and transformation.

2. Look into business skills and vocational training

Young professionals create side hustles to make ends meet and start businesses to create jobs. Some will be lifelong business owners, while others might one day prefer to secure a job. For that reason, it makes sense to invest in building practical skills that strengthen your resume as you grow a business. Even if you already have a skill – for example, welding or computer programming – getting a certification can show customers you really know what you're doing. An introductory business skills course can help you develop administrative, time management, marketing, sales, and interpersonal skills that will vastly improve your chances of success. Some examples of cost-effective or free learning resources include: Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Network FutureLearn Coursera LinkedIn Learning

3. Seek a mentor

As you set out on your entrepreneurial journey, speaking to someone who has already walked a similar path can be highly beneficial. A mentor can provide you with sound advice and introduce you to their business network. If you know someone in your personal network who can help, reach out or ask a friend for a recommendation. Other areas to look for a mentor include networking at industry associations and local chambers of commerce, or joining incubators, and attending industry conferences and events.

4. Start small, run lean

External funding from investors, banks, and the government can seem challenging, so most young entrepreneurs need to self-fund their businesses. Even if your business generates cash, it pays off to be frugal in the early months or years. Some ways to save money are to barter goods and services with friends 12

One of the most difficult questions to answer is: “Which restaurant should I try in NYC?” Even more of a difficult question to answer is: “Which restaurant is worth splurging on in NYC?” The type of cuisine, service, presentation, and occasion are just a few factors to consider when planning to drop big bucks on a meal. Luckily, we’ve listed our 10 favorites in New York City that we think are worth every penny.

Le Bernardin Expect utmost service and exceptional fish-forward French cuisine at this three-Michelin-starred dining experience. Le Bernardin was birthed in Paris and expanded to New York in 1986. Diners are in good hands as Chef Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin has run the kitchen for over 20 years. Le Bernardin offers a few tasting menu options; the four-course menu is split into three categories – Almost Raw, Barely Touched, and Lightly Cooked. Think Kampachi Crudo with grated yuzu, lemon, and extra virgin olive oil and Poached Black Bass with braised cippolini, spinach, and shaved turnip bacon-green peppercorn sauce. The chef’s tasting menu (which we highly recommend), consists of eight courses from Osetra caviar on a “potato cloud” to poached lobster with black trumpet and baby turnips to brown sugar curd, oats, and apple-pomegranate sorbet. While seafood remains Ripert’s passion, there is an option of a vegetarian tasting menu as well. Le Bernardin serves 99% sustainable and wild fish from between Maine and North Carolina.

Vestry Located in SoHo, one-Michelin-starred Vestry places heavy emphasis on seafood and vegetable-focused dishes. The menu, with Asian cuisine influences, includes a variety of small, shareable plates and larger, main course items. Menu highlights are the shiitake handroll with nishiki rice, wrapped in wasabi leaf; chu toro with yuzu and fresh wasabi; sushi rice mixed with egg yolk, shiso, and trout roe; Atlantic salmon with butternut squash and kombu; and homemade cheesecake with Honeycrisp apple.

Rezdôra Nestled in a narrow, brick-walled space, Rezdôra is an unassuming upscale one-Michelin-starred Italian restaurant. Pasta is the route to take here, and if you really want to commit to that route, try the five-course pasta-tasting menu. Dishes to try include burrata with royal mushrooms and black truffle puree; strozzapreti pasta with tomato sauce, lobster and basil; uovo raviolo di nino bergese pasta with ricotta, egg yolk, sage, and white truffle; and scallops with roasted squash, hazelnuts, and saba. The bulk of the produce comes from nearby Union Square Green Market and Rezdôra is committed to working with local farmers.

JANUARY 2022

Atomix The food on the 10-course Korean tasting menu at two-Michelin-starred Atomix is genuinely excellent. There are several details that make dining at this restaurant worth the dent in your wallet. To begin, to enter you must ring the doorbell of an unmarked small residential building. A host will then greet you and walk you down a set of stairs to a counter with 14 chairs. A few snacks arrive, but the fun part is that a tray of chopsticks, each unique, are presented to you and you’ll have the option of selecting your perfect pair. After this fun step, dinner begins. Every course commences with a notecard. The notecard gives specific details about what you’re about to consume, even down to little ingredients such as water. The notecards also have a short description of the inspiration behind the dish as well as the IG handle of the person who made the plate. The courses start small and progressively get larger. At the end of your meal, you’ll be given an envelope to take all of your notecards home.

Marea You know that the food will be exceptional and the service incredible the moment you step foot into one-Michelin-starred Marea. The pasta dishes are the restaurant’s claim to fame, but Marea is a seafood restaurant before it’s an Italian one. Marea can be experienced through a tasting menu or a la carte. Outstanding dishes include the crudo; grilled octopus with fregola, sundried tomato, castelvetrano olive, almond, and charred raisin; and the grilled lobster with mushroom, castelfranco, and caramelized sunchoke. The house-made pastas are the star of the show with the gnocchetti tossed with tomatoes, shrimp, chilies, and rosemary oil, and the squid ink lobster ravioli with coral bottarga being our favorites.

www.cpmagazine.net

17

Jean-Georges Superior French cuisine makes this two-Michelin-starred restaurant worthwhile. Dishes present everything from attention to detail and immaculate seasonal products to distinct flavor combinations. Dishes may include foie gras terrine with glazed sour cherries and candied almonds coated in a thin brûlée shell, while steamed black sea bass is dressed tableside with a mild red curry broth, a splash of lime and a sprinkle of sesame seed. Desserts are more elaborate such as a plum sorbet, verbena-poached pear, and a palate cleanser of melon soup with “vanilla noodles.” A vegetarian tasting menu with the likes of butternut squash purée with minced chives and brunoised mushrooms is also available.

SAGA Located on the 63rd floor of the Art Deco building, Saga is a multi-course seasonal tasting menu with Moroccan influences. The average dinner lasts about 3.5 hours and spans several different rooms. There’s no menu to peruse in advance, so a server will come to you and ask a couple of questions (this dish or this dish?). After answering, you’ll be summoned to be seated in one of the dining rooms. Execution of the dishes at Saga is critical. After finishing the meal, you’ll be taken to a different terrace for tea service followed by dessert.

Bâtard Bâtard is home to a multi-course European tasting menu with touches of the chef’s native Austrian roots. Menu highlights include foie gras mousse with almond streusel, apple, sunchoke, and cranberry; carnaroli risotto with forest mushrooms, chives, parmesan, and jus; and Amish chicken with roasted salsify, ricotta, chicken ragu, shallot confit, and sage jus. 18

JANUARY 2022

The Modern Two-Michelin-starred, The Modern, overlooks the MoMA’s sculpture garden and is designed to capture the feel of the art museum. Dishes such as seed cracker with aged cheddar and butternut squash butter; or soft-boiled eggs with sturgeon caviar; or turbot roasted on the bone alongside rich parmesan cream may be found on the carefully curated pre-fixe menu. We recommend a reservation while it’s still daylight to be able to look out at the garden while the sun’s still out.

Indian Accent Don’t be fooled by Indian Accent’s seemingly rigid prix-fixe and chef’s tasting menu options. Yes, it’s fine dining, but the restaurant isn’t above letting you have some fun and even get a little authentic by eating with your hands. Menu favorites are the beet and peanut butter tikki and goat cheese raita; sweet pickle ribs, sundried mango, and onion seeds; crispy jackfruit, cauliflower rice, and kerala pumpkin curry; paper roast dosa, wild mushrooms, water chestnuts, and gunpowder; and for dessert, makhan malai, saffron milk, rose petal jaggery brittle, and almonds. www.cpmagazine.net

FormerlyMe.com presents “On The Go: Gatorland”

WHAT IS FORMERLYME?

Jim West

FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “On The Go: Gatorland” days of my journey. 20

JANUARY 2022

I had long wanted to wrestle some large animal. Every since I was a kid I always was fascinated by the idea of fighting large beasts. I never imagined I would ever get close enough to a real alligator, much less sit on one. Yet here I am flying to Orlando, Florida to visit the Alligator Capital of the World, Gatorland. Some interesting facts about alligators are they can't survive in salt water, their eyes glow in the dark, can run up to 35 miles per hour, and they go through over 3000 teeth in their lifetime! The largest alligators reach over 1000 pounds! These reptiles are definitely fearsome and Florida is the spot to see them.

I got to learn a lot about these reptiles. I was surprised to learn they sometimes eat fruit and often their own young baby alligators (yikes!). Here at Gatorland there are hundreds of gators. The below pic is just one of many areas with hundreds of gators of various age ranges.

After touring the grounds, I was able to get up close and personal with a gator and take a photo. Just to be clear, gators are dangerous animals. The mouth was taped and there were handlers on both edges of the photo so I was never in any real danger. Just DO NOT try this at home.

I had a wonderful experience learning about these ancient reptiles and made a memory that will last me a lifetime. Going here helped me push myself beyond my comfort zone. I feel we all should try some things that scare us yet are relatively safe. Things such as skydiving for example. As Will Smith coined in his YouTube video of his Skydive in Dubai, “The best things in life are on the other side of fear”.

Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my more unique experiences I had in 2021-2022. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial www.cpmagazine.net

MEET THE ASICS FRONTRUNNER KUWAIT TEAM “Do it for fun, do it for your wellbeing, for your own health. Enjoy it all the way” José Berrocoso

Each runner is a representation of the ASICS Sound Mind, Sound Body philosophy. As brand ambassadors, the new FrontRunners are set to inspire and motivate the community to lead an active lifestyle, reaping the benefits of running for the body and mind. Coming from diverse backgrounds, age, and professions, the new ASICS members share a genuine love for running, and their inspirational journeys of how running has changed their lives.

Khajah.m

Maryam Khajah, ASICS FrontRunner Kuwait Maryam, 25, is an engineer from Kuwait who is passionate about sports. She enjoys running, and an occasional competition or race. With a belief that sports is a great health investment, Maryam loves to encourage those around her to start moving, whether walking or running.

22

JANUARY 2022

CPM: Can you introduce yourself to our readers? Maryam Khajah: My name is Maryam Khajah, and I am a Kuwaiti Engineer. I work in a private sector with Schlumberger Oilfield ltd. I’m also a board member of the Kuwaiti Sports Federation For All (KSFA), in addition to a committee member of Kuwait Triathlon Federation for Activities (KTF). I also act as a leader in Thunders GYM & a Frontrunner for ASICS. I’m also sponsored and part of a circle by AURA athleisure. Other than that, I’m a person that is into sports. I love sports, it’s my way of stress relief. Always into trying new things in sports and exploring, I tend to spread positive vibes and encourage people to get into sports as it is something that is beneficial for our own health in the long term.

CPM: How long have you been running and how many events did you participate in? MK: I’ve always wanted to get into sports earlier, but I was afraid it could affect my studies. So I started after my graduation, which is at the end of 2017 as a hobby. It started in Kuwait, with where I’ve done many different activities throughout the GCC and internationally. Every event has its own memories and vibes, with almost 100 races encompassing running to obstacle course racing.

CPM: What motivates you to go running? And are there moments that even you struggle to overcome? MK: Running is my stress relief. The day I joined a gym and running clubs, I felt

CPM: What tips do you have for newcomers to successfully master even small distances? MK: I would advise newcomers to start slow. If you’re starting from scratch, I’d recommend starting with a coach. Never start alone, as there a lot of things you would regret and it’s important to remember that anyone can do it, you just need dedication and guidance. Here are some advice from my experience: always warm up before any exercise, always stretch after any workout, never wear new shoes on race day, don’t compare yourself to others, celebrate your new records and achievements, don’t take sports as a punishment, always put in mind that you are doing this for your own health and peace of mind. Last but not least, enjoy every minute of it, it’s a win-win situation between doing it for your health and enjoying it.

CPM: What do you have to consider when running? MK: You have to consider many things when running. The most important things in general are: warm-ups, stretches, drinking enough water, eating properly (having a nutrition plan), wearing comfortable running apparel, wearing the correct running shoe, having a training plan and most importantly recovery. These are the main things that any person needs to consider in their daily life before running.

like I have another family. A big positive and healthy family. This made me feel that these are the vibes, environment and people I want to be around. There are moments that I struggle to overcome balancing all the different aspects of my life. Being a full-time engineer means working at least until 5pm, I also am a gym trainer so I have commitments to specific classes. Being a board member and a committee member for specific Federations also takes a significant amount of my time. Then there’s also family time and my own trainings. The only solution to overcome this is time management; you can be what you want to be, as long as you work hard, and are passionate of what you’re doing. I wanted to share with you my love for OCR (Obstacle course race). I love OCR because it represents life. OCR consists of running, overcoming obstacles, taking penalties, thinking and decision making. Running is a representation of our life and time - it keeps going and we can’t stop it. The in running obstacles are the obstacles we face in our daily life; you see them from far away and start thinking and planning how to overcome them, but at times come as a surprise. You can either overcome them or accept the penalty.

CPM: Do you track your runs? And if so, why? MK: I track my runs to help me check and improve my weak points. There’s always space for improvement. That’s why I need to have an appropriate plan that will help me track my runs from long, short, speed runs, etc. This will help me set a plan and predict my next records if I stick to the plan.

CPM: What is your take on meals before, during and after a race? MK: You can take anything that gives you energy before the race. Some people relay on dates, energy chews, coffee, bananas, muffins, normal breakfast and some people go on empty stomach; it all depends on you and how your body digests, and if you need that energy. Myself, I take coffee before my race with either dates or muffins. And it depends on race type and time; if it’s a longdistance race I will make sure I get enough energy and keep some with me for during the race. If it’s a short race I can just relay on coffee or some energy chews. After a race it can be anything, I would eat anything to satisfy my body after the achievement it gave me, I always reward my body as it always helps me get through my races. Let’s not forget that hydration is an important element before, after and during any race.

CPM: You are an ASICS Frontrunner in Kuwait, what does it mean to you? MK: Being an ASICS Frontrunner for Kuwait means a lot to me. I feel proud to represent my country as I love it so much, and ASICS is a dream brand to represent. Being part of the Frontrunners gives me the opportunity to be part of a great team and interact with many great minds. When I joined, I didn’t just represent the brand, I learned more about ASICS and it transformed my mind-set about running. I always like to support and help people to run and move; this community helped me to reach more people in my community with this mission. I have a passion for running and any physical movements or adventures; ASICS supported me all way. ASICS helped me improve myself, my wellbeing and connect with frontrunners around the world sharing our journey of movement for wellbeing.

CityPages Magazine: Can you introduce yourself to CPM: Do you have any advice to young people who our readers? want to start a career in sports?

Mohammad AlBahar: My name is Mohammad, I am from Kuwait. Currently I’m 38 years old, living with Type 1 Diabates for the past 35 years. I have a bachelor degree in Managament Information Systems and Information Technology, as well as a professional Diploma in Insurance (Chartered Insurance Institute).

CPM: What motivated you to become a sportsperson? MA: Living with a chronic condition (Type 1 Diabetes), can be stressful and burdening, financially, emotionally, and socially. Sports helped me reduce my stress levels, have better control of my sugar levels and food intake, as well as being surrounded with people with a similar mindset. Sports is a lifestyle, for better well-being, mindset and critical thinking.

CPM: What emotions do you feel when you play well? MA: I feel a blast of euphoria, achievement and self-satisfaction, as well as serenity and peace.

MA: Yes, always be humble to learn, ask the coaches for a sports plan that suits your goals and objectives, as well as asking nutritionists for better meal plans that help you reaching your goals. Never have the approach that you know it all, as this is the start of your mind shutting down and unwillingly causing injuries to yourself and others that train with you. Take it step by step, and with patience and consistency you will achieve wonders.

CPM: You are an ASICS Frontrunner in Kuwait, what does it mean to you? MA: It means the world to me, to represent my country and the diabetes community. To show that I can compete as everyone else, and participate in running, obstacles and conditioning challenges, on the same level with athletes, coaches, gym enthusiasts, and people living with Non-Communicable Diseases. It’s liberating to see that my condition doesn’t define me but actually encourages me to be better on a personal and social level.

CPM: Tell us any anecdote that happened while playing sports. MA: During my last participation in Gulf Bank 642 Marathon 2021, I was running the 10K distance. Once i had passed AlMubarakiyah Market route I saw a big sign on the right with 5K written on it, on the left side was written 10K, 21K, 42K. My mind started playing games on me to go right, no one will notice, and i will get the 5K medal. I hushed my thoughts by saying: i’m not doing this run for glory, nor for winning, i’m doing it for my health, and wellbeing, i’m a warrior and i will overcome this with a best self record. I turned left and finished my 10K run in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 25 seconds, i was proud of the decisión i have made, for not giving up on myself.

CPM: Does an athlete, in your opinion, have to lead a healthy lifestyle? MA: An athelete does have to lead a healthy lifestyle mentally and physically. The mind can be either your motivation or your tool to distruction, if you want to be a great athlete you have to leave your ego out of the gym, and be keen to learn every minute and respect the ones that are willing to provide you with their knowledge and experience. You have to be in good terms with yourself, to accept yourself, and if you have things you need to fix, do so. Only the brave ones know their flaws and are willing to fix them, to be a better versión of themselves. Remember that growth is a continous process that will never stop till the day you die. A good advice for people that are willing to be athletes is: never stop learning, never stop training, and never ever give up on yourself. If you failed, that is part of life’s journey and a big part of our growth process. If you win, it means we have learned, and implemented new techniques, it is also a reason to be grateful for the ones that stood by our side, while we were stumbling and falling down many times to rise again.

CPM: How difficult is it to manage type 1 diabetes whilst training and competing in one of the toughest endurance sports? MA: First of all you have to accept diabetes, to be in good terms with it, consider it as a friend that needs certain type of attention. Once you have passed this phase you are set to sail. Secondly, always plan ahead. If you’re going for a run it is compeletely different than going for a conditioning and strength workout, as both have a different impact on your blood glucose levels. Also, always take into consideration your carbs intake, active insulin before, during and after workout. Does your exercise involve cardio or resistance? Your sleeping pattern before a marathon, competition or a challenge, as well as taking into consideration the process of muscle recovery. All these elements have an impact on your blood glucose levels, causing them to rise up as you’re body is healing. And also always consult your healthcare providers, to check if you are healthy enought to perform certain types of sports with your current health status. www.cpmagazine.net

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I am Vimi Joshi an international celebrity makeup artist and an international fashion week makeup artist. I have been doing makeup for over 25 years with celebrities from Hollywood to Bollywood and Rockstars to royalties.

Tell us about your education.

I was actually training to be a doctor. Growing up in a strict Indian family, I was not allowed to be an artist. Although I trained to be a doctor but that was not my passion was. But when you dream of something, the universe conspires to make your dreams happen. So, I met some friends and one of them was a stylist for U2 The band and another one was a casting director and so through them I had the opportunity to become a makeup artist.

Tell us a little bit about how you first got into makeup, and about your journey to where you are today?

While I was studying during the week days, on weekends I was a backup dancer for music videos in London. So, in the mid nineties where we are talking about the Spice Girls, Peter Andre, Oasis and other iconic British bands and I would go and be an extra. During this I happened to meet a makeup artist who literally changed my life.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I find my inspiration every where. I look at nature, I look at the sky, I look at the architecture. I look at everything around me because inspiration is magical and is all around us.

How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?

My signature look is definitely celebrity red carpet glamour but I love doing from all aspects. From super creative to fashion shows to literally no makeup for some women. I really believe that makeup is an art but the truly real art is listening to your clients, listen to their needs, listen to how they want to look and feel and not how you want to project your vision on to them.

Which famous artists have influenced you, and how?

I truly get inspired by art. So, Claude Monet, Picasso, Van Gaugh inspire me. When I look at these guys work, look at their brush strokes, how they paint and use colors inspires me. So, art and artists are a true inspiration for me. In my spare time, I go to art galleries and look at painting and through paintings I get my inspiration.

How did you start working with celebrities?

I started working with celebrities almost instantly. When I finished my medical school, my first job was with the Prime Minister – Tony Blair. I was working for his advertising campaign before he became the Prime Minister and that was the start of my journey. Since then, I have worked with so many celebrities from around the world. From Hollywood, Bollywood, Arab world, to Filipinos and many more.

What are the three tools in your makeup kit that you can never, ever be without?

The three tools in my makeup it would be my brushes, Makeup (all of it!). But to pick three, its Lipstick, Mascara, and an eyeliner. I use different brands and keep trying different brands all the time. 28

What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to both men & women?

The best piece of advice that I could give to men and women is to “Be true to yourself.” If you want to wear wild makeup and you love it and you own it, go ahead and do it. There are no rules to makeup. The only rule is that there are no rules. The good thing about makeup is that it washes out.

What’s your secret to achieving a flawless-looking complexion on your clients?

My secret would be hydrate – hydrate – hydrate. If your skin is hydrated enough, the moment you apply any makeup to it, it melts in it and makes your skin look buttery. Almost like an ice-cream.

What have been your favourite red carpet looks you’ve done?

This is such a difficult question. Each celebrity has a unique personality and each one wants to look different. So, my job is to see what they are wearing, how their hair and how they want to look and make them look the most beautiful. Each celebrity I have worked with has loved my work

What have been the largest hurdles you’ve had to overcome to date?

The hardest thing that I had to overcome was to convince my family and parents to accept makeup artistry as a career. Going back in 90’s and coming from a strong Indian family, it was looked down to be an artist. The moment I told them I was working in the beauty industry, they thought I was working in a salon and would be waxing and doing eyebrows. To explain them I was a professional makeup artist, was an absolute challenge. It’s only when I got associated with the IIFA awards and they saw me doing makeup on celebrities that they took me seriously and understand makeup artistry as a career.

What advice do you wish you had received at the beginning of your journey to success? The advice I wished I had received would be to not give up. Believe in your dream, believe in yourself, keep going. As creative people, we are so critical on ourselves. My best advice is Art is creative and unlimited. Don’t let the society judge you or tell you what to do. I wish I had got this advice in the beginning. My advice to everyone is to go out there and be as creative and artistic as possible and enjoy and own your journey.

In your opinion, what is the most important quality in a makeup artist?

The most important quality in a makeup artist is to listen to what your client or celebrity needs and it’s so important to listen to how they want to look and how they want to feel. It’s all about them. You are just using your brushes and makeup to bring out their innovation. So, listen to what they want and don’t do what you think will look good on them. Make it a cocreative process where you are both going through it together. Make it a beautiful and spiritual experience for your client.

How do you keep up with the latest beauty trends?

I set, or create trends. It’s an interesting thing that when you do makeup for a celebrity, thousands of people see and follow them and it becomes a trend. Instagram is also a great place to find trends but I like to create my own trends with celebrities. So, as I say “own your art.”

What are some common beauty mistakes women make?

Choose the wrong shade of foundation. My biggest challenge was when working with the South-Asian community is that when the women wanted to look fairer but it was turning to grey. So, according to me choose the correct shade of foundation is the key to making the best and most glamorous version of yourself.

What are some of your achievements that you are most proud of?

Some of the achievements that I am proud of are: I was the Directory of makeup artistry for the IIFA awards for 10 year. So, actually putting a huge 3-day event with over 400 makeup artists and a team of around 30 was a challenge and then seeing everything come together on stage was magical. I was also honored to be part of the Vancouver Olympics opening ceremony in 2010 was also a great honor. Working backstage on all these fashion shows internationally is an achievement. What I am most proud of is that as an Indian woman, I am able to inspire so many women out there and the fact that I believed in my journey and followed my heart.

What are your plans for the future?

My future plans involve to keeping inspiring through beauty, connecting the world through beauty and starting a conversation about embracing our imperfections. Look at your flaws, embrace them and let’s change the dialogue. Being imperfect is the new form of perfection. Don’t follow the herd. If a trend is on Instagram, it does not mean you have to follow it blindly. Find you, find yourself, find your inner beauty. Embrace your flaws.

Juggling a family and a career isn’t easy! If we had the chance to peek at your schedule, what would an average day look like?

I don’t have an average day. Each day is so very different from the previous day. It’s so unique, so magical. So, if you love what you do and have a very supportive family, it’s the best thing ever.

What are some of your other hobbies?

My hobbies are meditation. I am obsessed with meditating and I love doing yoga. So, to live in this world of hedonistic beauty, fashion and glamour, my balance is with meditation and silence. If my schedule permits, I try to meditate for at least two hours per day. That’s how I ground myself, find my inner strength and that’s how I evolve in this world.

It is definitely the one doing makeup for Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. It was in a private jet and as we were landing in Bangalore and I was trying to do the eyeliner and the plane was going through turbulence was definitely a fun experience but being a true professional, I managed to do it right. Also landing in Bangalore with a crowd of fans waiting and getting into the van which were police escorted was definitely a memorable experience for me.

DO'S AND DON'TS OF STAYING FIT AND HEALTHY

38

JANUARY 2022

Fatema AlOthman

WORKOUT DO'S lShorten

the workout duration so that it doesn't wear you out. lReduce on running and cardio. Make it short, but high intensity. For instance, spot run for 10 minutes, take a break, and run again. You can do that 4-5 times lThe exhaustion can make exercise boring, so look for variety. You can swap weight training or running with swimming, rope-climbing or kick-boxing. lAlways keep a bottle of water handy and take frequent sips. lIncrease the water intake too. If you usually drink 2 litres a day, increase it to 2.5 to 3 litres. lExcessive sweating increases the chances of muscle cramps, muscle pull, fatigue and dizziness. lSo, stretch your muscles in between workouts and increase the intake of salts.

WORKOUT DON'TS lAvoid

wearing synthetic clothing, as they don't absorb or help evaporate sweat. lWear soft, cotton clothes. lNever stop abruptly. In summer, our heart rate is generally higher than usual and gets even higher during a workout. So, stopping abruptly can cause a heart failure. Take at least 10 minutes to cool down. lSwim or stretch during these 10 minutes. lDo not work out under the sun without applying a high SPF sunscreen.

WORKOUT MYTHS

Myth: Having coffee before a workout gives you more energy. Reality: It's actually a dangerous habit, particularly during summer. Caffeine is diuretic; it makes the body lose water. Instead, start with a glass of cool water. Myth: Training harder and eating less help lose weight

faster.

Reality: A workout should be short and intense. As

for your food intake, the heat makes you lose a lot of energy, so maintain the calorie intake your body is used to. But it's better to switch to summer-friendly foods and increase your fluid intake. Watery fruits help. Myth: Surviving summer workout means more body

endurance.

Reality: Extreme temperature actually decreases

your body endurance. So, emphasis should be on strength training to make your bones stronger. Moreover, instead of aerobic exercises and long distance running, focus on meditation and yoga. Myth: Eating less carbohydrates helps lose weight. Reality: You won't lose weight if you overdo it. Strike

a balance between food and exercise. Instead of going for crash diets, try to change your lifestyle and food habits slowly. In short, keep your goal of getting healthier simple and realistic.

HEALTH DO'S

lDrink a lot of water. lTry to maintain a proper

electrolyte balance by either having ORS, a salt and sugar mixture or fruits with high water content like melons or cucumber lMaintain your gut bacteria by increasing curd intake. lTry to eat fresh food. lAvoid frozen or stale food. lWear light coloured cotton and linen clothes.

HEALTH DON'TS

lAvoid going out in the sun without protection. lDon't wear dark coloured clothes, lTry not to gorge on non-vegetarian food.

drink a lot of water to keep yourself hydrated. lStreet food or fast food is a strict no-no.

“Gastronomy has been my passion since I was a child. I like getting lost in the kitchen, discovering flavours and creating new dishes. My restaurant is my home, my world, where you are all invited to enter” Our destination is Logroño, which is in the heart of the Rioja region, and 135km drive from Bilbao airport on the Northern Coast of Spain. Chef Aitor Esnal awaits us in his new restaurant just opened months ago. Aitor Esnal is originally from Zarauz, but calls home to Logroño. Since his childhood he has lived immersed in artisan creativity and a taste for cooking. He has had the good fortune to train with the greatest chefs. He studied at the Luis Irizar Cookery School in San Sebastian, where he had the opportunity to learn at restaurants such as Arzak, Martín Berasategui Group and Miramón, owned by the Arbelaitz family. Chef Aitor never rests in his search for new ideas with which to feel fulfilled in his relationship with cuisine and gastronomy. His first dream materialised in Logroño in 2007 under the name of Marinée, a restaurant where he was able to transmit his taste for raw materials and authentic flavour. His second dream was called Wine Fandango, also in the capital of La Rioja. And now it is time to move forward and he just open Aitor Esnal Restaurante in the old town of Logroño. CityPages Magazine has a chat with Aitor to find out more about his new gastronomic challenge 40

CityPages Magazine: Opening a restaurant in a pandemic could not have been easy. How stressed were you? Aitor Esnal: The truth is that it was not an easy task; I still have the twitch in my left eye. I had to make a very important decision: to go ahead or not. I spent weeks thinking about it until I finally gained momentum and decided to go ahead with all the consequences. It has been a bumpy road, but I made it: I opened the restaurant I dreamed of. CPM: What has been the hardest part of the making of the restaurant? AE: Except for the context in which we were (and still are), with some uncertainty in the face of restrictions and so on, it has been a pretty sweet work and start-up. I have had a great team of professionals who have taken care of all the problems that have arisen. Perhaps where I had to fight the hardest was in getting the kitchen into the restaurant's dining room. CPM: Why did you choose Logroño? AE: We chose Logroño in 2007. We were looking at various places in different cities in the north of Spain, even in the 42

south of France (Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Biarritz...) When we saw other places, we realised that Logroño was a fantastic place because we had the opportunity to offer a different gastronomy from what was available at the time. And we were right to open what was my first restaurant: Marinée. CPM: What´s the idea behind AITOR ESNAL? AE: Enjoying and transmitting that enjoyment through the language of gastronomy. Aitor Esnal is the result of a desire to continue evolving. I want to create a space where I can offer my cuisine in an open way, without ties, with the commitment to enrich our environment and to contribute our small grain of sand to the evolution of the gastronomy of La Rioja. CPM: Local ingredients and raw materials are the essence of your gastronomic offer, what you define as local cuisine sin ataduras (relaxed cuisine). What can guests expect of your brand-new menus Entorno and Sin Ataduras? AE: Well actually I like to talk about local products and ingredients from all over the world. When guests come to the restaurant they will find two proposals that come out

of the concept of "Cuisine from the Surroundings with no strings attached" in this way: Entorno Menu, in which we offer in seven dishes a cuisine that is based on local, local produce, reaching as far as the coasts of the Basque Country and where we subtly apply the ingredients that we discover on our travels. Sin Ataduras Menu, in this case we offer in eleven dishes a cuisine that is also based on local, local produce but with more daring, creative and surprising dishes. We are privileged to have one of the best vegetable gardens in Spain, resulting in exceptional vegetables grown in the different valleys. For example, we have daily (or in season) veal, lamb, organic eggs, mushrooms, truffles, fruit trees, olive trees, artichokes, cardoons, tomatoes, peas, asparagus, etc. And as if that wasn't enough, the Cantabrian Sea is just an hour and a half away. CPM: What makes Basque cuisine unique? AE: Basque cuisine is unique thanks to the great tradition that has

44

JANUARY 2022

CPM: How do you work creatively with your food? Do you have a process when creating new dishes? AE: I actually try to follow a process, but it hardly ever works. I start thinking in my head about a certain product, I think about the different applications, I write down everything that comes to mind and I start testing. But suddenly, while I'm doing something else, the light bulb comes on with a touch that was missing or something that was left over, or the technique to apply and... WHAM! I hit the key. been cultivated since time immemorial. I come from a village called Zarauz, near San Sebastian, and since we were little we friends used to get together as a group to have dinner together, cooking for ourselves. There are so many factors... and perhaps the most recent ones are thanks to a few great chefs who got together with a single purpose: to extol Basque gastronomy and show it to the world.

CPM: Logroño is rightfully one of the food capitals of the world, with a fierce competition. Do you think that can be helpful or a disadvantage? AE: In my opinion it is very good. Because having more colleagues who want to do their job well adds value to the environment, strengthens our community and that will attract more public which will benefit all of us.

CPM: You are aware of your surrounding and all the raw materials offered by the Basque Country, La Rioja and other areas. Are there any new ingredients that you have recently started using? AE: I recently received Thai green papaya and have been working on making an appetizer with the flavour of the Som Tam salad. I managed to make an ice cream that is really delicious. I am now working on fermenting vegetables such as daikon and cardoon. CPM: Is there an element of other food cultures you admire or have had influence your work, and why? AE: I love the Thai way of working with chillies; in fact, it's the way I use in my kitchen. It is so interesting to me because it allows you to savour the ingredients or the product you are eating, while enjoying the intensity of the spiciness. I also really like the apparent simplicity of many Japanese recipes that turn out to be super special and complex, like a simple dashy, for example.

CPM: It has been nearly a decade and a half since you opened Marinée, your first project. What is the most surprising thing that has happened in your career during the past decade? And where do you want to go in the next 10 years? AE: In the last 10 years I have had the opportunity to learn to be a better manager and entrepreneur thanks to the second restaurant I opened in 2014, Wine Fandango. I went from having a small restaurant with 6 employees as was the Marinée to a larger and more ambitious one with almost 30 employees, with different turnover requirements, a larger scale purchase management and a very high occupancy level. This made me evolve as a manager and businessman, as my day-to-day work was not in the kitchen, although I was at the kitchen during busy times, as the saying goes: the goat goes to the mountain. In 10 years' time I see myself settled, with a consolidated project (Aitor Esnal), following excellence in our processes, cooking, training and creating new dishes, and surely encouraging the people around me to create new projects, in which I will also be involved, but without leaving my home and my kitchen. www.cpmagazine.net

TIPS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR BABY’S SKIN DURING WINTER FROM CORINE DE FARME

No secrets here – a baby’s skin is known to be extremely sensitive and delicate which is why parents must be very careful at all times. With the Winter season currently in full swing, it is even more vital to be conscious of your child’s skin and the products you use, as the change in weather can cause dehydration and dryness. When looking for the right products that have natural ingredients with the right PH balance and that don’t irritate the skin, Corine De Farme is your saviour! The French skincare brand, Corine de Farme, has identified the elements that are harmful for a baby, ingredients such as scents, soaps, alcohol, and is renowned for its clean, no-nonsense, gentle skincare, perfect for a baby’s fragile skin. Their products are enriched with 100% natural extracts which soothe, nourish, and maintain healthy skin.

Bathing

When giving your baby a bath, it is essential to maintain a warm room temperature and have a dry towel on hand to dry and keep the baby warm immediately after a bath. Dry them off as quickly as you can and apply a lotion to maintain their skin’s suppleness and lock in the moisture. You can also switch up bath time and bathe them in the morning rather than in the evening when the temperature gets cooler. Avoid bathing your little one very often as it can leave the baby’s skin dull and dry.

Humidifier

If you find that the air in your home is quite dry, consider investing in a humidifier. More moisture in the air will not only reduce skin dryness, but also help with your little one’s overall health and help them breathe easier.

The experts at Corine de Farme have put together these 3 top tips Here are a few essential picks for babies & toddlers from Corine for taking care of your baby’s skin during Winter: de Farme’s sulfate-free range, with soothing calendula which is perfect for your baby’s sensitive skin:

Moisturise

With the weather getting colder, this can cause the little one’s skin to be prone to extra dryness. It is thus important to keep it moisturised at all times, especially after a bath. When looking for the perfect moisturiser for your little one, avoid products with fragrances or alcohol as these ingredients can be irritating and dry out the skin even more. 50

Orange Culture More Than Just A Brand

Adebayo Oke-Lawal orangecultureng

Nigerian brand Orange Culture was launched in 2010/2011. The brand is known to explore unusual fabrications and experiment with them on every and any gender. The Orange Culture created a new niche for menswear in Nigeria and has undeniably opened doors for brave and more creative menswear brands. Founder Adebayo Oke-Lawal grew up with a passion for confronting societal norms and has used fashion as his chosen platform to combat hyper masculinity, injustice and suppressed expressions of Africanism. Adebayo teaches, mentors and creates spaces and practices manufacturing that gives back to the community on a regular basis. Orange Culture was one of the first Nigerian brands to begin collaboration within the industry and has inspired many to follow. 52

JANUARY 2022

The history of the label's collaboration is just impressive, what are the most exciting collaborations you remember?

Thank you so much for that comment! We do believe in the power of collaboration! Some of our most exciting collaborations include; our collection with Davido exclusively shown at Selfridges in London, Budweiser and Remy Martin on capsule collections, Huawei on a custom phone case that totally sold out. We have also collaborated with major influencers Temi Otedola and Denola Grey on capsule collections and artists Elo Osunde, Dennis Osadebe and Sophie Vermeulen.

In the latest SS22 collection, mostly which fabric combinations are used?

I do not limit our designs to fabrics or assign gender to fabric. I decide on fabrics based on the story and how best the fabric communicates it. For SS22 we worked with a lot of organza, crepes, upcycled denims, cottons, raw silk, chiffon, wools, even soft leathers and more. I always allow myself full exploration when it comes to fabrics as long as they are ethically sourced.

The Nigerian prints - what are special about them?

I create my prints around various Nigerian stories! Which makes it even more special, as it captures very personal Nigerian experiences for me and are prints you won't see anywhere else unless they copied us, haha.

Reducing waste in manufacturing procedures - how does this actually work ? We re-utilize leftover fabrics and patches for masks, linings, furnishings and so much more. We upcycle, sometimes dye and print over just to avoid chucking them out as waste.

We know that you recently visited Saudi Arabia for participation in the Fashion FUTURES SUMMIT. Do you see the opportunity for expanding The Orange Culture in the Arabian fashion industry?

I definitely see it and I am so thankful to AFRICAN FASHION FOUNDATION for giving us the opportunity to explore this relationship. Saudi is ready for the edge, the color and the stories orange culture brings, I saw it in the amazing people I met, the conversations I had and the numerous followers we received.

Please tell us about the current brand stockists

We currently sell at BROWNS, FARFETCH, TEMPLE MUSE, FOLKLORE, DE ESSENTIA, ABY CONCEPT, ZINKATA and more www.cpmagazine.net

SUBSTANTIAL WEIGHT LOSS CAN REDUCE RISK OF SEVERE COVID-19 COMPLICATIONS Successful weight-loss intervention before infection associated with 60% lower risk of severe disease in patients with obesity

Ali Aminian, M.D. (left) and Steven Nissen, M.D

A study by a top American hospital, Cleveland Clinic, shows that among patients with obesity, prior weight loss achieved with bariatric surgery was associated with a 60% lower risk of developing severe complications from COVID-19 infection. The research was published in the journal JAMA Surgery. Numerous studies have established obesity as a major risk factor for developing serious illness from an infection of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Obesity weakens the immune system, creates a chronic inflammatory state, and increases risk for cardiovascular disease, blood clots, and lung conditions. All of these conditions can complicate COVID-19. The aim of this study was to examine whether a successful weight56

JANUARY 2022

loss intervention in patients with obesity prior to contracting COVID-19 could reduce the risk of developing a severe form of this disease. “The research findings show that patients with obesity who achieved substantial and sustained weight loss with bariatric surgery prior to a COVID-19 infection reduced their risk of developing severe illness by 60 percent,” said Ali Aminian, M.D., lead author of the study and director of Cleveland Clinic’s Bariatric & Metabolic Institute. “Our study provides strong evidence that obesity is a modifiable risk factor for COVID-19 that can be improved through a successful weight-loss intervention.” A total of 20,212 adult patients with obesity were included in this observational study. A group of 5,053 patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or greater who had weight-loss surgery between 2004 and 2017 were carefully matched 1:3 to non-surgical patients, resulting in

‫‪Although the exact underlying mechanisms are not known, these data suggest‬‬ ‫‪that patients who underwent weight-loss surgery were healthier at the time of‬‬ ‫‪contracting a SARS-CoV-2 infection, which resulted in better clinical outcomes.‬‬

‫‪15,159 control patients. Compared with those in the non-surgical group, patients‬‬ ‫‪who had bariatric surgery lost 19% more body weight prior to March 1, 2020 (the‬‬ ‫‪beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak in Cleveland).‬‬

‫‪“Striking findings from the current study support the reversibility of the health‬‬ ‫‪consequences of obesity in patients with COVID-19,” said the study’s senior‬‬ ‫‪author, Steven Nissen, M.D., Chief Academic Officer of the Heart, Vascular and‬‬ ‫‪Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic. “This study suggests that an emphasis‬‬ ‫‪on weight loss as a public health strategy can improve outcomes during the‬‬ ‫‪COVID-19 pandemic and future outbreaks or related infectious diseases. That‬‬ ‫‪is a very important finding considering it is estimated near 1 billion people have‬‬ ‫”‪obesity worldwide.‬‬

‫‪After the COVID-19 outbreak, researchers looked at four COVID-19-related‬‬ ‫‪outcomes: rate of contracting SARS-CoV-2 infection, hospitalization, need for‬‬ ‫‪supplemental oxygen and severe disease (defined as a combination of ICU‬‬ ‫‪admission, need for mechanical ventilation or death).‬‬

‫‪In addition, Dr Aminian and Dr Nissen emphasized that findings of this study‬‬ ‫‪also underscore the importance of following the public health recommendations‬‬ ‫‪such as wearing mask and getting a COVID-19 vaccine for people with obesity,‬‬ ‫‪who are at greater risk to develop severe infection.‬‬

The Song of Achilles

by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. By all rights their paths should never cross, but Achilles takes the shamed prince as his friend, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine their bond blossoms into something deeper - despite the displeasure of Achilles' mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But then word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus journeys with Achilles to Troy, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear. Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart.

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Violeta

by Isabel Allende, Frances Riddle This sweeping novel from the New York Times bestselling author of A Long Petal of the Sea tells the epic story of Violeta del Valle, a woman whose life spans one hundred years and bears witness to the greatest upheavals of the twentieth century. Violeta comes into the world on a stormy day in 1920, the first girl in a family of five boisterous sons. From the start, her life will be marked by extraordinary events, for the ripples of the Great War are still being felt, even as the Spanish flu arrives on the shores of her South American homeland almost at the moment of her birth. Through her father's prescience, the family will come through that crisis unscathed, only to face a new one as the Great Depression transforms the genteel city life she has known. Her family loses all and is forced to retreat to a wild and beautiful but remote part of the country. There, she will come of age, and her first suitor will come calling. . . .

Crying in H Mart

The Midnight Library

by Michelle Zauner

by Matt Haig

An unflinching, powerful memoir about growing up Korean American, losing her mother, and forging her own identity. In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

The Maid

The Last Thing He Told Me

by Nita Prose Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter— she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection. But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

We all have stories we never tell. Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered; as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss; as a US Marshal and FBI agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they are also building a new future. One neither Hannah nor Bailey could have anticipated.

Directed by: Jon Watts Written by: Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers

A lot of credit must be given to Spider-Man for reviving the superhero genre of films and in my opinion, paving the way for Marvel to become the behemoth it is today. I think a lot of the inspiration for this film comes way of the 2018 smash animated hit Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. Yet the way the writer's handle bringing back so many film villains and tying them all together is brilliant. The inclusion of multiple film flashbacks and characters is handled perfectly and therefore I cannot find a place where the film felt lacking from a story perspective. This is why this film gets a Writing a Movie RIGHT review.

Here comes the spoilers.

With the events of the previous film, Spider-Man: Far From Home 2019, Mysterio reveals to the world the identity of Spider-Man as Peter Parker. The world is divided on the opinion of Spider-man being a hero or a killer. Peter's attorney, Matt Murdock aka Daredevil, gets the charges dropped but public opinion and cancel culture weighs on Peter and ends up affecting his friends as their MIT applications get denied due to public image issues. Peter goes to Doctor Strange asking for his help to get the world to forget he is Spider-Man. Strange starts to cast the spell, but Peter keeps interrupting him with adding to the list of people he wants to remember who he is. The spell starts to grow unstable, and Strange is barely able to contain it. Unbeknownst to them both the spell has rippled across the Multiverse and this crack has allowed villains from other universes to come into Peter's world. He first crosses paths with Dr Otto Octavius then Norman Osborn as the Green Goblin. Peter blacks out and awakes in Dr Strange's place where he is instructed to track down these villains who have entered through the cracks so Strange can

send them back but destroying the spell. Peter asks his friends MJ and Ned to help him track them all down and during the process finds out that these villains all died in their timelines due to fights with those timelines Spider-Man's. Peter feels there must be another way to help these villains. He takes the spell cube from Strange and takes the villains to his place where he works to help each one. Yet during this effort he senses something is wrong to find out too late that Norman Osborn has been manipulating them the entire time. Two others attack along with the Green Goblin and in perhaps the biggest tearjerker of a scene Aunt May dies in his arms right after giving the classic line, “With great power comes great responsibility.”. Ned and MJ try to find Peter but in the process they find the two other Peter Parker's from the other two film franchises. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their roles and what a perfect way to bring everything together with having them and their stories continue in this film. Especially for Garfield's Spider-Man who lost Gwen in his films. Here the second big emotional moment was when he gets to save MJ. Great writing on display here. In fact every villain and character gets to shine and have enough development that I was amazed not only at the strong writing at work, but expert editing. Just to key on the editing...the first 20 minutes of the film lays out the entire setup and you are in the story and invested. That is masterful. This film is perfect or at least as close to perfect as a film can be written given how much ground they had to cover with incorporating this many franchises and villains in one single film. Marvel seems to be back with emotionally charged story lines and well developed characters that are allowed to have their moments and shine when needed. Outstanding! Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’. www.cpmagazine.net

While the HUAWEI P50 Pocket will be available in White and Premium Gold in Kuwait on 10th February 2022 with pre-order starting on 3rd February 2022 at a price from KWD 429.900 and including free gifts for the Value of up to KWD 173.000 from Huawei’s online platforms as well as certified retailers. Here are four reasons why we love these two magnificent flagships from Huawei

Reason 1: It’s all about the looks!

Both of these phones have amazing designs. The Dual-Matrix camera design of the HUAWEI P50 Pro is unique with its double ring structure and makes the phone instantly recognisable. On the front, the phone features an expansive 6.6 inch 3D curved screen with a single punch hole camera. Gaming and watching videos on this HDR display with support for the full P3 colour gamut is a pleasure. The display is a 120Hz True-Chroma Display with a 300Hz touch sampling rate for a smooth user experience. Moreover, the IP68 water and dust resistance will let you have peace of mind. Coming to the HUAWEI P50 Pocket, it is a beautiful phone with a seamless fold that leaves no gaps and folds into a thin and light form. This makes the phone easy to hold and pocket. The seamless fold is made possible by the newgeneration Multi-Dimensional Hinge with a short radius. This hinge, combined with the exclusive Multi-Dimensional Lifting design, allows the HUAWEI P50 Pocket to have a smooth and flat screen while also allowing the device to stay slim. When it comes to colours, you have White and Premium Gold colourways to choose from. The Premium Gold colourway is an ostentatious display of craftsmanship, while the white version exudes the beauty of diamonds through the advanced 3D micro-sculpture design. The Premium Gold colourway is only available on the HUAWEI P50 Pocket Premium Edition and was created in partnership with Iris Van Herpen, a well-known haute couture designer.

Reason 2: The Cameras!

The HUAWEI P50 Pro’s Dual-Matrix Camera system delivers True to Life imagery with extreme clarity. The HUAWEI XD Optics allow consumers to capture amazing images and reproduce fine details. HUAWEI P50 Pro also launches with XD Fusion Pro, an improved solution that incorporates a new Super Colour Filter System, True-Chroma Image Engine and Super HDR technology to significantly improve detail, colour and dynamic range. It also supports an unprecedented 200 times zoom range, helping users capture any object regardless of distance. The True-Chroma Image Engine delivers the highest possible colour accuracy, creating images that reflect what is seen by the human eye. The ambient light sensing system uses a 10-channel multi-spectrum sensor, which is coupled with colour calibration of more than 2,000 colours across the P3 wide colour gamut, to improve its ability to detect ambient light and average colour hue accuracy by 50% and 20% respectively. In low-light scenarios, pictures come out brighter and more detailed. The Super HDR technology captures 28% more of the dynamic range for better backlit performance, while light and shadows are optimised. The HUAWEI P50 Pro supports 4K video recording across the full focal range. The all-new AIS Pro image stabilisation solution helps users easily capture stable handheld videos, while AI cinemagraph is great for creative shots that showcase minor movements.

Reason 3: Long battery life and fast charging speeds

The HUAWEI P50 Pocket presents a new breakthrough for HUAWEI IMAGETM. And just like the HUAWEI P50 Pro, the HUAWEI P50 Pocket also comes with advanced camera features like the True-Chroma Image Engine, HUAWEI XD Optics, and HUAWEI XD Fusion Pro. The most interesting camera feature on the phone is the Super Selfie feature that uses selfie algorithms and takes advantage of the foldable form factor of the phone, and allows you to take superior, more atmospheric selfies using the main camera sensor. In this phone, you get the benefit of the Ultra Spectrum Image Technology, which can capture details on your subject that are otherwise invisible to human eyes. Yet another handy addition is the Sunscreen detection feature in the Mirror app, through which you can check how well you have applied sunscreen on your screen and avoid getting sunburned!

Lastly, one feature on the HUAWEI P50 Pocket worth mentioning is the Smart Cover Screen that allows you to check notifications, schedules, calendar, music, weather, and more. Content and services seamlessly flow between the main screen and the cover screen, and users can even access the camera from the Cover Screen.

What powers the HUAWEI P50 Pro is a large 4,360mAh battery that supports 66W HUAWEI SuperCharge and 50W Wireless HUAWEI SuperCharge. What is mind-blowing is that even with a battery of this capacity, the phone is just 8.5mm thick. As for the HUAWEI P50 Pocket, it also has a large battery that supports the 40W HUAWEI SuperCharge.

Reason 4: Super Device Features is yet another reason to love these phones

Both phones are powered by EMUI 12 that produces an innovative UI with a clean and elegant look. Controlling multiple devices at once is as easy as controlling just one single device, thanks to the Super Device features. With the Distributed File System, both of these phones can also function as a wirelessly connected external storage unit for the PC, meaning you can access the files you want more easily than ever before.

So what do you think of the new flagships from Huawei? We absolutely love them!

RETURN TO SPACE

OMEGA JOINS SATELLITE CLEAN-UP MISSION

OMEGA has joined forces with ClearSpace in support of their landmark mission to remove dangerous debris from space. The makers of the first watch worn on the moon are returning to space, only this time, on a vital clean-up mission. An exciting new chapter in a distinguished history that began in 1965, when OMEGA’s Speedmaster became the watch qualified by NASA for all manned space missions. In line with the brand’s pioneering spirit, OMEGA is collaborating with ClearSpace to perform the first ever capture and removal of an uncontrolled space satellite: stage one of a long-term project to create an affordable service for space debris removal. Today there are thousands of satellites orbiting Earth, a huge percentage of them “failed”. These uncontrollable objects present risks of explosions or collisions with other satellites. Humankind’s next big challenge is keeping space clean in order to ensure sustainable growth in the future – and OMEGA is thrilled and proud to be part of the solution. OMEGA President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann called the partnership, “The logical next step for a brand with a proud history of both space exploration and Earth conservation” and described the ClearSpace initiative as, “One of the most important, inspiring and exciting projects since the launch of the Apollo missions.” 66

HOROSCOPES (March 21 - April 19)

(July 23 - August 22)

ARIES

LEO

February 4 will be an especially lucky day for you as your ruling planet Mars blows a kiss to auspicious Jupiter. These vibes will be especially beneficial to your professional life, making it important that you take serious steps toward your goals even if you’re not completely sure what the outcome will look like. Meanwhile, the sun and Saturn form a cosmic alliance that asks you to take on more leadership roles, especially where your community is concerned. Passion and romance will hang thick in the air as fiery Mars and romantic Venus cozy up in the sky on the sixteenth. This planetary alliance is perfect for heating things up in the most romantic week of the year, dear Aries, so be sure to pull out all the stops when it comes to sweeping bae off their feet. If you’re currently single, this energy can be facilitated to recommit to a passion project and practice radical self-care.

(April 20 - May 20)

TAURUS February 7 will be a busy day for you, little Bull, because the Taurus moon aligns with innovative Uranus while sharing helpful aspects to both Mars and Venus. These celestial connections could affect you on a profound level, helping you grasp your purpose in life. An additional connection between transformative Pluto and the north node could motivate you to make some serious changes on both personal and spiritual levels. Listen to your heart, let the universe guide you right now, and beautiful opportunities will soon find their way to you. If you’re having a hard time following directions from the other side, stay away from anything that doesn’t inspire you or ignite passion from within. This fated theme repeats on the eighteenth, when an earthy grand trine manifests in the cosmos, echoing destiny’s call on February 7. Divine inspiration will come your way, prompting you to get creative while moving forward boldly with your goals. If ever there were a time to put your faith in the universe, it is this day.

(May 21 - June 20)

GEMINI If you’ve been feeling disorganized or like you’ve been slogging through mud over the past few weeks, things will start to get much better when your ruling planet Mercury ends its retrograde journey on February 3. This shift gives you a chance to break cycles and move forward with your evolution. And a helpful alliance between the Aquarius sun and Saturn can help you reassemble personal structures, especially when it comes to your spirituality and connection with the universe. More change will come your way when Mercury moves from serious Capricorn to quirky Aquarius on the fourteenth. Divine inspiration will be a welcome side effect of this planetary placement, heightening your psychic abilities and creative instincts. You’ll also notice that people are more open to your advice and wisdom, though you’ll need to be mindful that you’re not crossing any boundaries with unsolicited perspectives. Be particularly mindful of this sentiment on February 21, when the Scorpio moon shares a tense aspect with the planet of communication, putting people in a private and temperamental mood.

(June 21 - July 22)

CANCER Your focus will be relationship-oriented this month, dear Cancer, because four planets are camping out in the sector of your chart that rules matters of the heart. However, this doesn’t mean that you’ll need to throw yourself into your love life. In fact, major themes around prioritizing yourself now come into play. On February 6, check in with yourself to make sure you’re not slacking on your professional goals in favor of date nights and romance. However, you should embrace love in all its forms during the week when sweet Venus and passionate Mars form an alliance in the cosmos on the sixteenth. Insecurities within yourself or your relationships could bubble up to the surface during the Leo full moon on February 16. Watch out for fragile egos, jealousy, and moodiness during this time, but try not to bend over backward to accommodate someone’s sensitive side if they’re being unreasonable. Relationships may crumble on this date, but only if they’re not meant to stand the test of time.

JANUARY 2022

Look for ways to mix up your love life and self-care regimen this month, dear Leo, because the Aquarius sun shines its light on the sector of your chart that rules love. These quirky vibes ask you to embrace unknown experiences and concepts, opening your mind in new and exciting ways. Intellectual conversations will be at the center of any romantic connections worth nurturing right now, especially once Mercury leaves Capricorn and heads into your solar seventh house on February 14. The full moon on the sixteenth is especially charged for you, with Luna camped out in your sign. You might feel some competition brewing between you and your partner, but you’ll need to make sure that the vibe doesn’t turn contentious. The only way to healthily move forward in your relationship is to support one another. If you feel like your significant other or crush isn’t able to celebrate your successes, you might want to consider moving on.

(August 23 - September)

VIRGO You’ll want to get a head start on your spring cleaning this month, dear Virgo, because the Aquarius sun shines its light on the sector of your chart that rules organization, daily routines, and health. However, don’t put too much pressure on yourself to get everything in order until your ruling planet Mercury ends its retrograde on February 3. The eleventh is an extremely powerful day for you as Mercury cozies up to transformative Pluto while sharing a sweet aspect to the nodes of fate. Get serious with yourself about what it is you really want in life, and take some time to consider if any people, situations, or behaviors are standing in the way of your highest potential. This vibe could get a little cutthroat since you won’t be in the mood to play around with your well-being and future. Don’t feel guilty about moving on with your life, even if some of the people around you are less than thrilled about it. Unexpected opportunities will find you when the Virgo moon shares connections to auspicious Jupiter and unpredictable Uranus on February 17. Try not to get overwhelmed with detail right now, even if the universe takes you by surprise. It will also be important that you not get in your head about the work yet to come even if your to-do list seems to grow with each second.

(September 23 - October)

LIBRA Your solar fourth and fifth houses see the most astrological action this month, dear Libra, with six celestial bodies making their way through Capricorn and Aquarius. You’ll feel drawn to the comforts of your own home above all else, though your friends will still manage to lure you away for the occasional night of fun. Luckily, keeping a balance should come easily right now, especially if you find a creative outlet to help you stay grounded. Whether you’re single or in a relationship, plan on spending Valentine’s Day at home with some cozy clothes, delicious food, and perhaps a bit of wine. An alliance between Mars and your ruling planet Venus this week turns up the heat in your love life, which could inspire you and bae to discuss the possibility of moving in together or joining your finances. If you’re riding solo right now, use this energy to amp yourself up with activities or passion projects that build your confidence.

(October 23 - November)

SCORPIO Make sure you communicate your needs clearly this month as Mercury and Venus find their way through your solar third house. Just make sure you’re gracefully articulating your disposition, dear Scorpio, or people might mistake your requests for demands. Putting up boundaries will also be important throughout the month, even if they’re with people you want to remain close with. You can sometimes get too wrapped up in your relationships, little Scorpion, and right now the universe wants you to take a bit of space. February 8 brings unexpected fun your way as your ruling planet Mars blows a kiss to wild card Uranus. This day is perfect for reconnecting with your passionate and free side, inspiring you to break out of your normal routine. If you’re in a relationship, this is a great day to reserve for a date so you can make the most of the time you do share with your heart’s desire. If you’re currently single, consider taking one of your besties out for a thrilling night of reasonable mischief.

(November 22 - December)

SAGITTARIUS Take some time to map out what the year ahead looks like for you financially, dear Sagittarius. With four planets making their way through Capricorn and activating the sector of your chart that rules money, it will be important to get real about your resources. Make a solid plan to pay off any debts you’ve racked up. And if there are any major purchases that you need to make before year’s end, figure out the best time for you to do so. The Leo full moon on February 16 could be an inspiring time for you as Luna shines a light on the sector of your chart that rules spirituality. You’ll feel alive and brimming with potential, but you’ll need to stay grounded to reap the benefits of this lunar event. A cacophony of ideas could flood your mind, making it important that you journal or take notes on any brilliant ideas that crawl out of your psyche. Don’t feel like you need to commit to one path right now, but be honest with yourself about what is and is not a realistic timeline for your brewing goals. While you’re riding this energetic high, the people around you might feel overwhelmed and irritable, so try to be considerate of how much you’re throwing at others right now.

(December 22 - January 19)

CAPRICORN February asks you to appreciate your beauty and the beauty that surrounds you as sweet Venus continues to travel through your sign. Plugging into your gratitude will also work wonders for your psyche, dear Capricorn, inspiring you to participate boldly in life. These vibes are also perfect for unapologetically going after the things you want, a sentiment exacerbated by the placement of Mars in your sign. Your love life will also get a nice pick-me-up this month, helping you win the affections of anyone you’ve had your eye on recently. The Aquarius sun and your ruling planet Saturn form a cosmic alliance on February 4, shining a light on your finances. Look at this cosmic current as an opportunity to make smart investments, even if it’s only in a quality pair of new shoes. Make a personal vow to get rid of any junk that’s collected over the years, and resolve to acquire fewer, nicer things moving forward. Play with your personal style when the Taurus moon aligns with innovative Uranus on the seventh, sharing supportive aspects to Venus and Mars. This is an opportune date to give yourself a makeover and perhaps take a few risks with your hair color or wardrobe choices.

(January 20 - February 18)

AQUARIUS It’s your time to shine, dear Aquarius, as the sun makes its way through your sign, boosting your popularity, confidence, and energy levels. With your birthday season in full swing, you’ll be thinking of what you’d like to manifest in the year ahead and what it will take to get there. Use the energy when structure-loving Saturn cozies up to the sun on February 4 to outline a series of reasonable landmarks you’d like to hit each month. The universe wants to open doors for you right now, but you’ll need to remember that using hard work, planning, and dedication is the only surefire way to actualize your goals. While much of the month could leave you tied up with social engagements, plotting for the future, and having fun, you’ll feel a shift when the sun changes signs into watery Pisces on the eighteenth. It would be wise to take a look at your financial habits over the next several weeks. You might even want to download a spending tracker to keep tabs on your purchases. If things are a little unbalanced when it comes to spending money on brunches or nights on the town with your pals, resolve to divide each bill equally moving forward rather than operating off the “I’ll get you next time” system.

(February 19 - March 20)

PISCES It’s okay if you need to take a step back from your family and friends for the first half of the month, dear Pisces, as a series of celestial bodies make their way through your solar twelfth house. These vibes ask you to carve out some quiet time for introspection, so you can gain a clearer understanding of yourself, your goals, and your relationships. Just try not to totally cut yourself off from the people who care about you most lest they begin to worry about your well-being. Your ruling planet Jupiter shares a supportive aspect to revolutionary Uranus on February 17, giving you the gusto to make some quick and serious changes. The sun enters your sign the next day, acting as a breath of fresh air after the emotional roller coaster that was Aquarius season. The good vibes will continue to flow as an earthy grand trine between the moon, north node, and Pluto manifests in the sky on the eighteenth, inspiring you to take control of your destiny. However, the catch is that you’ll need to shed your skin, which could require you to let go of toxic relationships or behavioral patterns.
