BUILD A BRIGHTER FUTURE

’m sure many of you will have attended school reluctantly and were eager for those days to be over with. But if school and the right to learn had been prohibited rather than mandatory, would your feelings remain the same? Many gifted people didn’t have the right to education and missed their opportunities. They have been brought up in places with high rates of poverty, crime and injustice. So knowledge was not a priority. Survival, on the other hand, was. In 2012, Malala Yousifzai brought attention to the terrorism that went on in Swat Valley, Pakistan. They had banned girls from attending school. Malala ended up getting shot for standing up for her basic human right as a child, which is to learn. Some countries still operate a backward system where they don’t permit their girls or women to attend school. But how do we expect to see a brighter future when half the population, the one responsible for the upbringing of our children, doesn’t have the right to education? We are placed here to inherit the Earth. God created resources and blessed us with brains which, combined together, can create miracles. No form of education or knowledge is useless. It is an investment to help mankind go about their lives safer, easier and better. It is our past, present and future. Without knowledge we would have no vaccines to combat disease, technology would not exist which in itself changed the world, and weather forecasts could not be predicted to save lives. It gives everyone a chance to meet their unique potential. By providing equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of their 12

APRIL 2019

social class, their mentality becomes more meaningful. They can use their talents to address issues close to their heart which leads to progress. We educate ourselves to live a happy and healthy life at a young age and we carry that awareness for a lifetime by teaching our children the correct lifestyle, passing it on to others and thus building better societies. We will all create our future and shape the world. It’s the most important factor to the education of nations. Learning educates us on understanding and mastering the conditions for peace. It develops a perspective of looking at life. We are dealing with each other daily, exchanging our goods and breathing the same air but we put borders around our countries and strive for power. By expanding our visions we grasp respect, empathy and intellectual awareness. We can unitedly eliminate corruption and reduce poverty, discrimination and injustice to create a sustainable planet. Nelson Mandela once famously said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’ We take our schools for granted and let the years pass by unenthusiastically. But when we come to understand how privileged we are compared to those less fortunate, we will truly appreciate every moment. As we grow, we will encourage those in our lives to grow as well and maybe even consider giving a chance for someone less privileged and offer help in turning their life around. Education is a necessity of life and by fighting for the right of education for all, we step up to accelerate progress and reach global prosperity.

R

ed Bull Back 2 Back, an e-football tournament on PS4, is coming to Kuwait! 256 gaming enthusiasts can create a 2-player team and compete in 3 offline qualifiers leading to the national final, ultimately crowning 1 team with the national championship thrown. In a unique championship, the 2v2 format changes the whole game dynamics as well as supports the players to play with their favourite teammates using strategy, communication and skills. Teams are now focused on how well they can coordinate with their teammate to score two consecutive goals. 256 participants can battle it out in the offline qualifiers from April 25 to 27 and only the top 8 teams can head to the on-ground National Final, held at 360 Mall on May 2nd. The series is an e-football interactive competition, based on the global gaming console Playstation 4. The sportive angle is that teams need to score 2 consecutive goals to win. Please introduce yourself to our readers. I consider myself to be a very genuine person. What you see is what you get. I am a passionate woman who believes in everyday growth. I feel fortunate to have a very eclectic vision of the world, thanks to my different cultural exposures. Having an American mother, Venezuelan father and Kuwaiti husband and kids has allowed me to appreciate the uniqueness of every person and has helped me never to make assumptions of people when I first meet them.

Tell us about your education. I first completed a five-year program in Clinical Psychology in Venezuela. I then moved to the United States where I received a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana. I then went on to complete my PhD in Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Illinois. I am a Venezuelan Licensed Clinical Psychologist (FPV) and US Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and a US Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I am a strong believer in the power of knowledge so we should never stop learning. There’s just so much information out there that we owe it to ourselves to keep learning, for our continuous personal and professional growth.

What inspired you to become a Psychologist? From a very young age I knew my passion was in helping and educating. With time, and seeing my older sister becoming a Psychiatrist, I was able to enter the amazing world of mental health. It was then I realized this field was close to my heart. Everything I do has to be something I believe in and I am passionate about and Psychology gave me just that. Understanding people’s feelings and behaviors was just fascinating. I think Psychology has a place in every single professional field and should be recognized as one of the most important professions.

How did the idea of starting your own counseling center originate? When I first moved to Kuwait, I realized the need we had to provide the community with professional guidance and with high ethical standards as it relates to mental health. I knew then I had to start something different and share with the community my passion. I was hoping not only to bring unbiased awareness on mental health issues but also offer treatment alternatives and perhaps relief. That is when I decided to open Kuwait Counseling Center which is tailored to provide professional and highly ethical psycho-educational services to children and adults.

When was the center officially launched and opened? We officially opened in August 2011.

What is your favourite part about being a Psychologist? There are many things that I would consider my favourites, but mostly I would say the fact that I work with humans and not with numbers, machines, equipment, etc. Also, I love that I get to know people for who they really are and not for how they present themselves to be. I consider this to be a privilege. I appreciate the fact that people trust me with their most private things like their real emotions. I take it as a responsibility and challenge to become every day better and better at what I do, not to let them down.

Is Psychology more of an art or a science? It is definitely a science, but I would say an artistic science. In science, for an experiment to be reliable it needs to always give us the same result. In 16

APRIL 2019

Psychology we don’t always get that. We are all different with different backgrounds, experiences, upbringings, emotions, etc. so we don’t really have two clients the same. As therapists we have to always be creative and try different approaches with our clients.

How have things changed in terms of awareness in Kuwait since you first arrived? I am happy to say that it has changed a great deal. I remember this field not even being considered by many as something that could actually work. Now it is more respected, people are believing in the benefits of it to a point that now I have people coming to see me even before they get married seeking advice and professional guidance. I know we still have a lot to do but I am confident that we are on the right track.

What are some of the services offered at the Kuwait Counseling Center? We offer a variety of services. We offer psychological and educational assessments as well as therapy to children, adults, couples and families. We also provide services to children with special needs through a highly qualified multi-disciplinary team offering Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Behavior Therapy and Nutritional services. In addition, we offer corporate and school training tailored to everyone’s needs.

Is there any type of client you refuse to treat? We do not refuse anyone at the center, but we make sure we offer services to those we can really help. We do not see our clients as part of a business, we see them as part of our family and because of this we make sure we provide them what they need. If we can’t, we are happy to point them to the right direction.

"I appreciate the fact that people trust me with their most private things like their real emotions." What is unique about your work with clients? Everything is unique about my work. Every client is different than the other. Every case is unique. I don’t really see my work as ‘work’. I don’t go to the office, I go to my second home and to my extended family. I have worked very hard on making sure that everyone that walks through the center’s door feels like they’re entering a home. I am fortunate to work with an amazing team who share the same vision. We get to know people personally. We get to know their strengths and weakness, fears and hopes. It is so amazing and priceless to see a light being turned on in their eyes.

Tell us more about MEPA and how and when was it launched? MEPA is the Middle East Psychological Association and I have been the President since 2015. MEPA was established in Kuwait in 2010 with the purpose of unifying professionals in the field, standardizing the practice and destigmatizing the field of Psychology in the Middle East. MEPA has grown a lot and has raised international recognition. We organized the first annual conference and expo in 2017 in Dubai and this year’s event was held in Kuwait. The association has a lot to offer and hopefully we will reach our vision across the Middle East.

What has been your biggest moment while working with MEPA? I would say many. MEPA has been like another child for me. However, there are two great moments that I keep playing in my mind. One is when we organized the first annual conference in Dubai. It looked almost impossible, but we did it and that night I thought I was having a dream. The second moment was very recently when I received a Presidential Citation award from the President of the American Psychological Association. This is one of the biggest awards any psychologist can receive from APA. I was walking on clouds and holding back my tears as I was listening to the APA president describing my qualifications for receiving this award.

What is your typical work day like? I guess my typical day is very much that of a working mom. I balance my time between seeing clients in the mornings and afternoons at our different locations and spending time with my family who are the perfect complement to my day. I’m also often involved in training in schools and hospitals and working with employees at corporate level. I am part of many different volunteer groups offering my involvement and passion for mental health. Weekends are untouchable, those are the days I use to recharge my batteries, spoil myself a bit and spend time with family.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a Psychologist in the Arab world? Psychology is not an easy profession. It carries a big responsibility to make sure we provide the best guidance and treatment options we can to our clients. In the Arab world this is a lot harder, mainly because we have to work against many different stigma obstacles and with very limited resources. Sometimes, ironically speaking, the biggest challenge is the culture itself, making it harder to accept the challenges imposed by traditions and society and to give the best we have.

Your work can be also very draining, what do you do to take care of yourself and keep a healthy mind? Yes, this type of work can be mentally and emotionally draining but the secret is to have a good balanced life. Everyone has different ways of coping with stress. Mine is swimming and talking to my husband. We actually have a routine where we talk every night about our day. My husband is my biggest supporter. He not only understands my field but has always been the one encouraging me to keep on going, especially when I think I can’t do any more. He is always right there giving me the strength to continue and to go to the next level.

Do you have any advice for a graduate student who is just starting out in the field of Psychology? Yes, I actually supervise many students and always tell them that Psychology is a field that you must love. It will give you a lot of satisfaction but you need to be prepared to work hard. It is a work that most of the time passes unobserved or unappreciated so if they want to be in this field to get recognition, then this may not be the right field for them. I would advise them to try many different areas and work with different populations until they find the one that satisfies them the most.

Your message for us at CP magazine. I am very happy and proud with the hard work you have done and with the quality of this magazine. I wish you the best of luck and encourage you to continue providing our community with education, entertainment and relevant information at a professional level. You are definitely pioneers at what you do and continue setting the example.

PAYMENT GATEWAY IN KUWAIT Nada AlMuzaini

W

ith all new the businesses rising in Kuwait, regardless if your business is food, cosmetics, fashion or beauty, it’s really hard to find the perfect or suitable payment method for your business. Today, many people are creating new niche concepts that thrive within a market. After establishing a business, the owners promote their business though a website or an Instagram account where they post visual content. Usually, new businesses take payment through cash on delivery which sometimes causes problems between the customer, seller and driver. However, thanks to technology, there are now many payment gateways in Kuwait that assist the basic needs of the client and seller: Myfatoorah: This is an online payment method that assists the connection between the business and the client. It provides an easy, unique service with DHL that simplifies the logistics between the business and the client. This solution can help the client pay with just a click of a button. This service allows businesses to offer the client a fast, easy and safe way to pay online. Myfatoorah allows payment in different currencies including KWD, SAR and many more, assisting the client’s needs in different places in the world.

Tap: Established in Kuwait in 2013, Tap was among the first online payment systems for businesses in Kuwait. Tap created a service allowing businesses and clients to accept and receive payments online. It is one of the growing technology companies in Kuwait helping its clients with easy payment gateways and has since teamed up with NBK, helping users with more efficient payments. Upayment, Hesabe and Payle: Online payment gateways in Kuwait that help clients to pay though a link where commission is also included in the transactions. There are many businesses growing in Kuwaiti and the GCC region, each creating a website that allows clients to pay with the click of a button. Businesses need to look for the best payment gateway within the market, especially since many banks such as NBK and Bank Boubyan imputed this service. Even though the market is fixed with many payment companies this will help the client to choose the best company and help the business to build on their customer service. My recommendation for your new business is to look for a company that helps you with your basic needs by providing a payment gateway on your website (like a Kuwaiti version of PayPal) and to look for an easy and simple payment method. www.cpmagazine.net

HOT & HEALTHY MY UNEXPECTED OBSESSION WITH EVERYTHING ‘SOUP’ Gill Sherry

I

’ve never been one for extravagant kitchen gadgets. Coffee machine? Yes. Panini press? Maybe. But a soup maker? Definitely not. So no-one was more surprised than me when a monstrous 1.6 litre soup maker positioned itself in my kitchen. What was I thinking? I don’t even eat soup! Not only that, but I’ve always shied away from complicated recipes, particularly those with a list of ingredients so long you need a sherpa to carry them all home. And what’s the point of spending a fortune on elaborate ingredients you’re only ever going to use once? I’ve fallen for that before, the result of which is a random selection of jars and packets currently gathering dust at the back of my kitchen cabinet - some of which I can’t even pronounce and most of which are probably out of date. So why did I buy a soup maker? Certainly not to enhance the look of my kitchen; it dwarfs the kettle, towers over the toaster and mocks the microwave, demanding attention with its dastardly dominance. It sure won’t win any prizes for its feng shui. But, aesthetics aside, this particular gadget claims to take the hassle out of meal times by making fuss-free soup in a matter of minutes. A tempting thought. Perhaps the reason I don’t eat soup is because I don’t actually like the tinned or packet varieties. Maybe, if I made my own, I could avoid the powdery residue left behind in the bottom of my mug, or the raging thirst so needlessly created by excessive salt. It had to be worth a try. Not surprisingly, my maiden soup making voyage involved the recipe with the fewest ingredients. Broccoli and courgette soup consists of, well, broccoli and courgette. Add an onion and a little seasoning and voila! Twenty minutes later, I was enjoying a hot and healthy (and very green) bowl of homemade soup. I even added a swirl of yogurt for effect. Admittedly, I didn’t take my eyes off the machine for the entire process, paranoid it would burn dry because I’d failed to add enough water or overflow because I’d added too much. But my worries were unfounded and my first soup making attempt was declared a success. For my second recipe, I opted for butternut squash and sweet potato, two ingredients I don’t usually favour. Slicing into the hard skin of the squash was a challenge in itself but, once chopped, I tossed it into the machine with the sweet potato, onion and water and pressed the magic button. Twenty minutes later, I was rewarded with a steaming hot (and very orange) bowl of goodness. This time, I added a few croutons. By now, I was no longer hesitant when it came to the use of ingredients or 20

APRIL 2019

machine. I was beginning to realise that it didn’t actually matter if I veered away from the recipe. So what if I used leek instead of courgette? Who cares if I throw in a vegetable stock cube or a spoonful of wholegrain mustard? The great thing about a soup maker is that you can experiment with ingredients, flavours and consistency. It’s also a fabulous way of using up leftover vegetables. Keen to avoid another psychedelic glow, I refrained from using brightly coloured vegetables in my third soup making exercise and opted for mushroom. There are various recipes available online for homemade mushroom soup, all slightly different. This reinforced my belief that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to making soup – whatever you have in the fridge or the cupboard is fine. Having peeled and sliced the mushrooms (two different varieties), I combined chopped onion, potato, a stock cube, water, milk and finally, a pinch of tarragon. Within five minutes of pressing the button, my kitchen was filled with a mouthwatering, earthy aroma. Fifteen minutes later and, once again, I was rewarded with a deliciously thick bowl of soup. As for the colour, it couldn’t compete with the luminous shades of my first two recipes but what it lacked in colour, it made up for in taste. A dot of fresh tarragon provided the finishing touch. I could go on – my experimentation has no bounds – but rather than list my own soup making successes, I would encourage you to try it for yourself. Of course, it’s not compulsory to purchase a soup maker (a saucepan is more than adequate) but from my own point of view, the gadget is a constant reminder of the delicious dishes just waiting to be delivered. It also simplifies the process by allowing the choice of ‘smooth’ or ‘chunky’. I’ve yet to attempt a meat-based soup but have already set my sights on pea and ham, chicken and sweetcorn and spicy prawn. The thing to remember is that the soup maker only heats the meat, it doesn’t cook it. So beware! It may not be the most attractive or discreet kitchen gadget but, surprisingly, the soup maker is one of my favourites. I have complete control over what ingredients go into my soup and knowing the result will be wholesome and healthy, it sure gets the nod over any shop bought alternative. And, should the time come when the novelty of soup making wears off, I can use it for smoothies and shakes. Roll on summer!

LADIES’ NIGHT Gill Sherry Last month, I was lucky enough to attend the CP Women of Substance Awards at Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel. It was no coincidence that the event was held during the month of March, the same month International Women’s Day is celebrated the world over. Not only was I able to enjoy a delightful evening with exceptional company, I was able to meet and congratulate many of the awardees. CP Magazine first introduced its Women of Substance segment in 2016 when eight inspirational women were featured. Four years later that number has risen to eighteen, an indication of the impact women are having on society and, I’m delighted to say, their influence here in Kuwait. The event on 20th March celebrated the achievements of CP Magazine’s Women of Substance, past and present. It was an honour to meet and congratulate so many extraordinary women, each with their own story to tell. Their collective attendance was awe-inspiring and their beauty undeniable – both inside and out. The event was supported by Maserati Kuwait - hence the stunning Maserati Ghibli on display – as well as Noor Clinic, The Flower Outlet and the wonderful team at Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel. Thanks to everyone involved for what I hope is the first of many Women of Substance events hosted by CP Magazine. And congratulations once again to the winners of this special accolade, an honour awarded to outstanding women; women of honesty, integrity and wisdom.

GO AL FRESCO!

I

t’s not often we get the chance to dine al fresco in Kuwait. Most of the time, it’s too hot to stand outside for two minutes, let alone sit and eat for two hours. Other times, the evening chill settles in before we’ve even studied the menu, the winter temperatures forcing us indoors to the comparative warmth of the air conditioning. So what a treat it’s been to enjoy the balmy springtime climate these past few weeks. I recently enjoyed an evening with friends at the popular dining and entertainment destination, Murouj. It was bustling with families enjoying a night out at their favourite restaurants, overlooking majestic palm trees and mesmerising water fountains. The subtle lighting coupled with the flames of the patio heaters added to the magical ambience. It was a captivating sight, a real outdoor treat rarely enjoyed in Kuwait. Marina Crescent was much the same, the outdoor areas busy with chatter. From dawn till dusk and beyond, the cool spring temperatures were perfect for walking, cycling, painting, photographing, eating, drinking and relaxing. In fact, whatever you preferred pastime, March and April have provided the perfect setting to do it outdoors. What a pleasure it was to see artists recreating the sparkling yachts in the

marina, photographers capturing a golden sunset, even joggers making the most of the season with a rare evening run. All watched by relaxed diners or drinkers enjoying a treat in the fresh air. It’s too easy to fall into the habit of eating indoors, the heat or dust cited regularly as the excuse to remain closed in. But when nature offers us the opportunity to break free of our confines, change our perspective and venture outside, why not take advantage? In just a few short weeks it will, once again, be too hot to consider dining outside. The freedom to enjoy a spot of open air indulgence will disappear all too quickly and we will be back inside, the artificial atmosphere a poor substitute for the sights and sounds of the outdoors. What a pleasure it is to hear birds singing, to see boats reflected in the water, to feel the fresh air on our skin. It sure beats the bright lights, Baltic air conditioning and amplified noise of most restaurant or coffee shop interiors. There’s only one thing better than enjoying your favourite food, in your favourite restaurant with your favourite people, and that’s doing it al fresco. The window of opportunity is only open for a short time so make sure you take advantage before it closes once more. As we all know, there’s a long, hot summer ahead. www.cpmagazine.net

Innovation and Intuition: Meet the Ferrari California T Meet the Ferrari California T – a model designed by Ferrari and Pininfarina to blend the classic Ferrari style with modern and intuitive tech. It’s the Ferrari for those who want each mile to be a new experience. For those who want to drive a masterpiece.

26

MARCH2019 APRIL 2019

When you get the opportunity to drive a Ferrari, you don’t hesitate. You take to the road and let it win your heart. And that’s exactly what we did earlier this week. The CP team was let loose with a Ferrari California T – a Ferrari with traces of classic models, as well as new features and technology. So we unleashed the California T on the roads of Kuwait. The weather couldn’t have been better as we cruised through the city with the retractable hard top roof down, and the radio turned up. As usual our photography team and our model came along for the ride and enjoyed shooting angles to show off just how impressive this model is.

www.cpmagazine.net

27

A sharp design

The California T has a modern design with streaking curves and contours defining the car’s need for speed. The bonnet curves smoothly down, almost disappearing into the ground it hugs the road, limiting air flow underneath the car, giving you complete control and stability as you fly down open roads. The athletic exterior pairs perfectly with the almighty roar that erupts from the vehicle with every acceleration. Classic Ferrari enthusiasts will be pleased to hear though that whilst the California T is very much a modern car, certain features are inspired by models dating back to the 1950s. The muscular shape of this California was modelled on the Testa Rossa 250. This subtle inclusion reminds us of the history and progression of Ferrari models, and the spirit behind these famous sports cars. We drove a white (BIANCO AVUS) model, with contrasting black roof trims,

wheels and front grill. It was a colour choice that made the interior even more impressive. The second you open the door to this masterpiece, you’re met with a bright red interior that epitomises the luxury and grandeur of Ferrari. And once you’ve taken your seat, the fun begins.

Piloting the California T

The sporty steering wheel features buttons and switches that give you complete control over everything from indicators, to the engine start/stop button. You can even swap between sport and comfort mode using the steering wheel. The touch-sensitive electronic dashboard and on-board infotainment system allow you to check speed and driving information, control climate within the car, or navigate to a new destination. And of course with Apple Car Play you can connect your phone to receive hands-free calls, or listen to music. As for the drive, you’ll find the car does most of the work for you. Every corner, every brake or acceleration is effortless. You’ll glide down roads at speeds and feel it responding perfectly to your commands. With such an intuitive and responsive vehicle, and with all the controls you need located on the steering wheel, you can drive long and winding roads with minimum movement. The adjustable speed limiter is a feature that’s going to help you harness this car’s power. Once you’ve set the limit, the California T won’t let you break your limit.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride

As a Ferrari grand tourer the California T is as comfortable as it is stylish. It’s one of Ferrari’s concepts with four seats, making it a top choice for anyone wanting road trip companions. The two extra seats mean the California is perfect for anyone from individual professionals, to families.

28

MARCH2019 APRIL 2019

The sports bucket seats make driving long distances comfortable and enjoyable. And every drive is an experience in itself. The retractable hard top, infotainment system and different driving modes give you the opportunity to make every drive unique.

Introducing the turbocharged engine

The most notable addition to this new California model is the ‘T’, which represents its new turbocharged engine. The turbo engine takes exhaust gases, and recycles them, using them to give the car that bit more power. And it makes all the difference. You’ll feel the power behind this Ferrari with even the slightest tap of the accelerator. But perhaps more importantly, it also reduces the car’s emissions, giving you a sports car that meets emission regulations.

The verdict

The California T isn’t a car for any one occasion. It’s a car for every occasion. In bad weather, with the roof closed it’s a comfortable space to drive and be driven in. In good weather, the retractable roof gives you the chance to take in 360 degree views and fresh air from the open road. And whilst this might be a grand tourer model, it’s thrilling to drive on city roads as well as long country roads. We loved every second we spent with the Ferrari California T, and would recommend it to anyone wanting to experience life in the fast lane.

Marie Auffret Your choice of lodging can make or break your travel experience. But a good hotel will forever be ingrained in your memory, elevating your trip from good to great. Or, in the case of this fabulous Snowhotel, from great to once-in-a-lifetime! This uniquely beautiful, charming, extra-special property will make you wish you could stay forever! Located in the Northeastern city of Norway called Kirkenes, it’s a twenty minute drive from the Russian border, overlooking the Barents Sea. The Snowhotel offers two kinds of accommodation, The Snow Rooms and The Gamme Cabin.

“breath-taking view of a frozen fjord!”

Every winter, The Snowhotel is built from the ground up in a matter of weeks and, every summer, as the snow begins to melt, it disappears once again, like a frigid dream. An ephemeral enchanting icescape that appears as if by magic every year! However it is a team of inspiring and innovative ice sculptors who create this galactic looking gallery that is a must-visit for any art and eco design enthusiast. Find out what it feels like to sleep inside one of those individually decorated ice rooms! You’ll be provided with warm clothes and a sleeping bag before braving the sub-zero temperatures on an ice bed with a comfortable mattress and pillows, outfitted with reindeer pelts. The room is kept at a constant temperature of -4°C but, by comparison to the -30°C outside, it feels positively balmy. Surprisingly, you will only need to wear a thermal top and bottoms, one pair of socks and a hat - that’s all. As per the staff recommendation, the idea is to leave enough air around you in the sleeping bag, which is heated up by your body and keeps you far warmer than a big jumper would. All set, you are ready to fall asleep admiring the beautiful lights and sculptures around you. It will certainly become the most memorable night of your life. In the morning a visit to the sauna is a must and a delicious breakfast will be served at the restaurant with a breath-taking view of a frozen fjord! The Gamme Cabins - the alternative warm accommodation - are available all year round. The twenty charming wooden cabins were inspired by Scandinavian interior design. Inside, you’ll find luxurious touches such as under-floor heating and large windows through which you can admire the beautiful panorama. At night, turn off all the lights of your cabin and start to contemplate the sky. If you are lucky you may see the spectacular Northern Lights. Cozy chairs, covered in sheepskin rugs, are here to make it even more special! You will find big bathrooms with powerful showers, sleek wooden design details and feature walls bearing the image of the Aurora Borealis. This is definitely the most enchanting and comfy place in the middle of that Arctic scenery with the best wake-up overseeing the sunrise of that majestic mountain landscape! The atmosphere of the hotel itself is incredible. Each part of it has its own charm. The dining huts and the cabins where you can borrow warm clothes are extremely homely. Gabba, a small and cozy cabana inspired by traditional Arctic hunting and fishing huts, is the place to come to grab a quick snack or a warm drink while warming up by the crackling fires. Thick rugs and rustic wooden furniture create a snug ambience throughout and, if you pop outside for a walk around the outdoor areas of the hotel, the magnificent natural views wherever you look add a sense of grandeur.

The romantically perched Høyloftet Restaurant is the best for a sunset view. There is usually a set menu, offering local Nordic cuisine such as fillet of reindeer, Arctic char, or king crab soup. However, if you are vegetarian or have other dietary requirements, the staff are happy to accommodate you. Breakfast is also eaten here and there’s lots to choose from; smoked fish, fruits, cereal and more. The meals here are a treat, with tasty specialties served in a traditional style, using the best of local ingredients! The staff are incredibly friendly and amazingly helpful at all times, whether they’re showing you how to wrap up warm for your night in the snow rooms, teaching you how to drive a husky sled or helping with dietary requirements at dinner. While there are some great facilities in the hotel itself – the sauna, where you can run straight out into the snow to cool yourself down is one highlight – the hotel borrows cross country skis, snow shoes and sleds for you to explore the splendid surroundings.

“Shuttle service from the airport, which is available to pick you upon arrival.” The hotel really excels in its range of activities. Animal lovers will adore meeting the 180 huskies that live on the hotel’s premises. You can not only walk up and meet huskies of all ages, including tiny puppies, you can also be whisked away on husky safaris, where you’ll learn to control the sled yourself. There are also king crab safaris, where you’ll travel by snowmobile sledge out onto the frozen fjords to catch, cook and eat gigantic king crabs after that amazing excursion! Northern Lights adventures are another highlight. You’ll drive your own snowmobile late at night to catch sight of the awesome natural phenomenon. In the summer, there are plenty of activities too; fishing in the Barents Sea, hiking with huskies and catching king crabs. The Snowhotel has so far been the most incredible experience of my stay in Norway. It’s a unique and unforgettable hotel that made me feel at home and makes me want to stay endlessly! info@snowhotelkirkenes.com www.snowhotelkirkenes.com

Chef Constantino

‘It’s not just a profession; it’s a way of living.”

Meet the chef bringing the taste of Greece to Kuwait. When did you first start cooking? What’s your first cooking memory? Professionally, I started in my early twenties. My first cooking memory is when, at the age of six, I decided to make tzatziki - the most famous Greek dip made by Greek yoghurt - after I tried it for the first time.

in biodiversity. The variety of ingredients gave us the ability to create a unique gastronomic culture, simple but full of taste combinations of vegetables, meats, fish, cheese etc. The highlight of Cretan cuisine is Dakos, a rusk round bread topped with fresh tomato, goat cheese and olive oil which was created from the need of people to have something easy to make and nutritious enough for working on their fields.

Which part of Greece do you come from and is Where (and from whom) did you learn about there a dish/recipe from back home that you think cooking? should receive more promotion? Mainly from my grandmother. She was passionate about I come from Crete, the biggest island in Greece and the richest 34

cooking and had her own garden of vegetables and her own

animals for meat and eggs. Most importantly, she cooked only on a fire so the whole process was a combination of enjoyment, flavours and unique creations of food.

Is there anything characteristic about the Greek way of thinking about cooking? Something that differentiates Greek chefs from other nations? I think the fact that we first start learning how to appreciate and respect food by observing our mothers’ cooking and then going to cooking school to learn the techniques of making food professionally.

How long have you been working at Estia Mass? And what made you decide to come to Kuwait? I have been with Estia Mas since the very beginning so I consider this place as my baby. My decision was based on my need for adventure and for a turn in my life. Living in Kuwait for the last two years I must say there are no regrets, only enjoyment and the discovery of another way of living with people who are friendly.

Do you have a favourite cuisine, apart from the Greek, of course?

What are your favourite ingredients when cooking at Estia Mass and how do you make sure to get the best ingredients? My favourite ingredients are onion and garlic which are in almost every Greek recipe. Of course, I use plenty of other ingredients which I go and buy every morning by myself to make sure that I get the best and most fresh produce for my recipes.

Which ingredient is posing a challenge to find in Kuwait and how do you work around it? I must say that the Kuwait market is rich enough to offer me everything I need, although I import my father’s olive oil directly from Crete.

Name five things you like the most about Greek food. The variety of vegetables, the use of raw and not cooked olive oil, the fact that we mostly cook with seasonal ingredients and keeping a balance between meat and fish/seafood. And, of course, the passion and love which are very important to create a tasty dish.

Asian - I love it!

Do you have a guilty food pleasure?

How would you describe the food you serve at Estia Mass?

Burgers! I love to spoil myself with some junk from time to time.

My food is mama’s food! The recipes are mostly my mother’s and grandmother’s apart from some that are more creative.

What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting to cook?

So what is your favourite Greek dish, if you would have to choose only one? That’s pretty difficult to say but if I have to choose I’ll say Cretan Greek salad because it contains all the nutrients you need (from raw vegetables to boiled potatoes and cheese) for a productive day.

How do you wind down after a long day? Usually I take a hot shower, listen to relaxing music and read a nice book until I sleep.

Do it because you love it otherwise you will fail. This job is pretty tough and challenging every single day. It’s not just a profession; it’s a way of living.

What gives you the greatest pleasure and satisfaction when you prepare food for your guests? Their smile and satisfaction after they taste it. And, of course, when I see them coming back to the restaurant to try more and more of my recipes. www.cpmagazine.net

THE RESTORATIVE BACK-TO-NATURE EXPERIENCE Where: São Lourenço do Barrocal, Portugal

São Lourenço do Barrocal is a recently restored 19th century farmhouse hotel, winery and spa located on a historic family estate in a wild corner of Portugal’s unspoilt Alentejo region. The 780-hectare estate and monte alentejano has remained within the same family for over 200 years but fell into ruin following Portugal’s political turmoil in the 1970s and the forced collectivisation of farms in the region. The 40-key farmhouse hotel offers a range of spacious guest rooms and cottages housed within the original farm buildings along a central cobbled street, with a vernacular design showcasing local craftsmanship and heritage features. The interiors draw inspiration from the local farm villages, with traditional terracotta brick floors and whitewashed walls complemented by soaring vaulted ceilings, beautifully crafted wooden furnishings, softlytextured handcrafted wool throws, and artworks inspired by the history of the estate. The wonderful farm-to-table breakfast at São Lourenço do Barrocal is served at an ancient long wooden table, showcasing the best seasonal organic produce including artisanal bread, seasonal fruits (freshly picked oranges, lemons, grapes, strawberries, persimons, quinces, apples, watermelons), a wide range of local charcuterie and home-made cakes, jams and pastries with eggs to order, honeycomb from a local producer, fresh goat cheese and cured sheep cheese and baked apples with cinnamon – it’s a breakfast extravaganza! The surrounding fields include vast organic gardens and olive groves, with endless activities to fill guests’ days. The 20m outdoor pool provides a meditative space to swim, inset with a huge granite barrocal rock. The stables house Barrocal’s own horses, which can be ridden through the estate to discover the Neolithic monuments dotting the landscape, or up the hill to the medieval town of Monsaraz. www.barrocal.pt

INDULGE IN THE ARABIC COFFEE EXPERIENCE Where: The Chedi Muscat, Oman

The Chedi Muscat was one of the first stylish resorts to rise on the Gulf of Oman. Today, it remains a standard-bearer for quiet luxury and minimalist design. It’s located on a long stretch of private beach and 21 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. Sparkling waters, vibrant gardens and dramatic mountains as seen through the grand windows in all 158 tasteful, well-appointed guest rooms and suites heighten the calming effect of the natural and timeless environment. Each morning, a sumptuous and ultra-stylish breakfast buffet is spread out along the main restaurant’s four open kitchens. Be sure to leave enough time to ensure you've located and ransacked every station. The hotel is delivering more and more local delicacies so you can taste the country you’re visiting. Pamper your palate with sugar and spice and everything nice, but be prepared for some serious zing. Forget everything you thought you knew about coffee, expand your caffeine horizon and surprise your taste buds. We all have our own, very specific way of enjoying our coffee and have personalized our intake to perfection. Often, spiced with cardamom and served with dates, this is a coffee experience like no other and an exceptional Instagram opportunity. Arabic coffee is no joke, and a must when visiting the GCC countries. https://www.ghmhotels.com/en/muscat/

Look Up At The World’s Largest Collection Of Dinosaur Footprints

Parque Cretácico, 5km from the city centre and on the grounds of a concrete company, might seem an unlikely location for the most dinosaur footprints ever found in one place, but then again, Bolivia has a tendency to surprise.

See Indigenous Textiles In The Museum Of Indigenous Art

One of the best ways of learning more about this tradition is in the Museum of Indigenous Art, where complex, colourful weavings handmade through the ages are on display. Handcrafted by several indigenous groups, they reflect their religious beliefs, representing everything from heaven to the underworld, with some weavings of community life also thrown in.

Pay Your Respects To The Dead At The Cementerio General

Although it might seem a little morbid, Bolivia’s cemeteries are yet another way of learning more about day-to-day life – and death – in the country. Sucre’s huge General Cemetery is peaceful place of manicured lawns and huge walls of niches (sealed graves) where plaques, photographs and small mementos (such as toys or even small bottles of coca cola) placed in front of the niche give a sense of the person who lies within.

DAILY REMINDER Sara Abiqwa

W

e set the alarm clock to wake us up each morning and we snooze and snooze until we can’t afford to snooze anymore. It’s so hard to wake up but we have to. It’s for our own good, it’s for going to work, waking our kids up, working out. Whatever it’s for, it’s for us to be productive and get going with our day. But what happens if we don’t set the alarm clock? We stay asleep, we are late and then everything we planned falls out of place. This is exactly what we should do on the inside. We should set our inner alarm clock to wake up our consciousness. Otherwise we will keep living under the control of the subconscious with all the emotions, fears and doubts that have been living and thriving in it for the past twenty, thirty or forty years, taking the driver’s seat in the vehicle of our own lives. I know you are probably asking yourselves, how do we turn our internal alarm clocks on? The answer is autosuggestion. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like, an automatic suggestion of information and questions to the brain that happens over and over again until you shift your entire thought paradigm. Did you know that humans have complete control over their thoughts? I was astonished when I learnt that fact, because I was living by the faulty belief that thoughts are wild horses that can never be tamed. So, as I always say, what better moment than the moment of now to start practicing autosuggestion? Be generous with yourself, feed your brain the healthiest information, read books that enrich your awareness, watch motivational videos, have deep profound conversations with people of high energy and knowledge and ask yourself inspirational questions. Whatever it is that works for you, just do it!

7 TOP TIPS TO KICK START YOUR HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Iman Metwally

H

ealthy living, to most people, means both physical and mental health are in balance or functioning well together. In many instances, physical and mental health are closely linked, so that a change (good or bad) in one, directly affects the other.

When it comes to physical activities or exercise in general, you don’t necessarily have to go to the gym and smash yourself for hours of training. You can simply start any kind of physical activity at a moderate level that your body can maintain and transfer it into a habit. Almost any type of exercise (resistance, water aerobics, walking, swimming, weights, yoga and many others) is helpful for everybody. Below are 7 top tips to help you with physical activities: 1. Start slowly and progress gradually to avoid injuries or fatigue. Exercise can be broken up into smaller 10 minute sessions. Over time, build up to 30 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise. 2. Walk every day. Walking is very effective and beneficial to all kind of fitness levels. Walking can be for long or short periods during the day. Try parking your car a little further from your work place and walk to work. 3. If you happen to have a gym to exercise at, then it might be great to seek the help of a knowledgeable trainer who can design an individual program and keep you motivated. 4. Another great way to keep you motivated can be exercising with a partner or friend to hold you accountable. 5. Also, it might worth trying a group fitness class that matches your fitness level. It’s good to experience the different atmosphere of working in a big group. It can be addictive! 6. It’s always fun to get involved in sports, whether you have a fitness background or you are brand new to it. 7. Track your progress. Whatever your goal, whether you are looking for a physical change, mood change or even a way to de-stress, tracking your progress will keep you going. Seeing where you started and where you have progressed to, motivates you to do more and stay on track. Physical activity and exercise is a major contributor to a healthy lifestyle. People are made to use their bodies so disuse leads to unhealthy living. Unhealthy living may manifest itself in obesity, weakness, lack of endurance or overall poor health that may foster disease development. Consequently, there are more tips for emotional and mental healthy living. This is the topic of my next article. Be kind and authentic to others and to yourself.

No Risk… No Ferrari

A design that doesn’t hold back. A car that will take you anywhere. The Ferrari Portofino is unapologetically aggressive in appearance and power. It screams confidence, speed, and style. And the best part? It’s a Ferrari for all seasons. This week the CP Magazine team had the pleasure of test driving a Ferrari Portofino. My mind was racing with images of Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, tearing down mountain roads in his red Ferrari in the movie Goldeneye. And sure enough, our Portofino was a stunning racing red – the perfect colour for Ferrari fans and James Bond aficionados alike. We took the Portofino out for a spin around Kuwait before stopping at Mall 360 to snap some photos of the Ferrari in all its glory. Our photography team was joined by Entrepreneur, consultant and Mum, Essra Al-Bloushi, who recently received an award at the CP Women of Substance Awards 2019. Essra and her beautiful children put the Ferrari’s four seats to the test, and enjoyed every moment of racing through Kuwait. Throughout her business ventures, Essra’s motto has been ‘no risk, no Ferrari’, so it felt only right for her wonderful family to join us on this driving adventure.

A flawless design The Portofino is perfectly built so that every part of the car contributes to the driving experience. The shape of the flanks isn’t just for a sporty appearance; in fact, every contour plays a part in the Portofino’s aerodynamic shape. Each curve, edge and vent is precisely placed to relieve pressure, cut drag, and keep fuel emissions down. And under the hood, the specific layout that differs so much from other brands of sports car is specifically designed to dissipate heat, maximise space, and save weight. As a result, the Ferrari Portofino is authentically athletic in its appearance. The curves that cave in and arch out show that this is a car that’s built for speed. There’s depth to each and every part of the Portofino.

Complete excitement in a compact build With the Portofino, Ferrari stripped the design back to lightweight materials, creating a light and compact concept. It weighs 80kg less than the Ferrari California T, but still it’s packed with high-tech features and power, and it’s comfortable too. In fact, for an entry level Ferrari, the Portofino is packed with an unbelievable amount of power, making even the shortest of journeys a thrilling experience. Just resting your foot on the accelerator you’ll hear the unmistakable growl of a Ferrari turbocharged engine. And with less weight for the V8 turbocharged engine to propel forwards, the Portofino is ready to fly. It can reach 62mph in 3.5 seconds, and 124mph in 10.8 seconds. But as well as turning the Portofino into a speed machine, the turbo engine also cuts down the Ferrari’s emissions, making it more eco-friendly to drive. With this concept, Ferrari have also focused on keeping the centre of gravity low, improving the way the Portofino hugs the road and easily tackles corners. The control and stability of the car make speed dangerously inviting - the car pulls beneath your feet, and you can’t help but smile as you harness the power. 48

APRIL 2019

Embracing comfort on grand tours The Portofino is designed for long distance, with two modes (sport and comfort), you have control over the way you drive and the way the car responds. Whilst sport mode entertains exciting driving, allowing hard breaking, wheel spins and aggressive gear shifts and acceleration, comfort mode makes for a smoother ride. Bumps in the road will be much less noticeable, and the Portofino’s power will be easier to contain. The softer throttle and gear changes transform the Portofino into an everyday car. And for long journeys, there’s even a separate mode for particularly bumpy roads, so that despite being low to the ground, the Portofino glides over almost any road surface. As for comfort, the 18-way electrically adjustable leather seats are cushioned and supportive, and allow the driver and passenger to find the perfect position for a long drive. The infotainment system also makes it easy to connect phones through Apple CarPlay, allowing you to play music, make handsfree phone calls, and navigate to new destinations. The retractable hard top roof breathes new life into every journey, offering scenic views of your journey, fresh air, and www.cpmagazine.net

sunshine. Even if it’s a windy day, or the temperature outside isn’t quite warm enough, the Portofino has a wind break, keeping the cabin warm and windfree. It also reduces wind noise. The air conditioning system is also effective when the top is down, so whatever the temperature outside, you can enjoy perfect temperatures in the Portofino cabin. One surprising bonus to the Portofino is the size of the boot. For a Ferrari, there’s a generous amount of room for luggage in the boot, and if the two back seats aren’t being used there’s more space there too.

The verdict We only had the Portofino for a day, but already, we’re in love. The Portofino is one of the best Ferraris for grand touring, but it’s also one of the best everyday Ferrari. It’s comfortable, surprisingly spacious, and you have the option to control the way you drive, and the feel of the car on the road. So whether you plan on venturing far and wide with a Portofino, or it’s going to be a city runner, this Ferrari can suit just about any lifestyle. With the two back seats it can even be used as a family car. But one thing’s for certain, this is a car for those that want to enjoy every second of every journey. There are so many options and ways to drive the Portofino, and it’s so responsive that it perfectly matches and compliments your driving style.

Fairmont Hotel The Newest Landmark of Manhattan Style in Riyadh

T

he northern part of Riyadh has become a new luxury gateway to multinational businesses and leisure facilities in the capital of Saudi Arabia. The new 5-star Fairmont Hotel and Convention Center welcomes guests from the Gulf region along with more distant international visitors. A key centerpiece of the business community in Riyadh, the Fairmont is the closest luxury hotel to the King Khalid International Airport - a mere 15-minute drive away. My experience of staying at this fabulous hotel began with the elegant arrival on the ramp of the grand entrance. My car was carefully parked, my luggage was taken to my room and, before I could proceed beyond the reception, I was able to enjoy dates with fresh Arabic coffee. As a business traveller I gave my attention specifically to the Business Suites with decoration inspired by the dramatic and stylish cities of Manhattan and Chicago. The technically equipped bedrooms with dedicated office and private living area, ensure the hotel is a superb choice for business travellers.

The hotel, abundant with elegant space, provides 298 luxurious guest rooms, each with hints of contemporary glamour in the design. Designed by the world-renowned, LW Designer Group, bespoke elements throughout the hotel focus on combining local culture with luxurious furnishings and textures. Fairmont Riyadh also features strong geometric patterns and unique design motifs to create a confident and modern atmosphere that establishes a distinctive sense of place. After a long working day, returning to the spacious bath and shower in the hotel room is most rewarding in personal comfort and became my ideal preparation for the multitudes of international dining flavours awaiting me. During my stay I was able to enjoy the variety of foods and beverages in The 365 restaurant. An evening at The 365 is a true culinary journey. I was overwhelmed by the sights, sounds and smells of unique cuisines presented in an engaging and interactive theater of open kitchens. Whether you are looking for Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Indian or Brazilian you will find the essence captured at The 365. Be it the Dim Sum chef quietly steaming the Seafood Dim Sums, or the Chef at the Brazilian buffet awaiting to showcase the raw meats for your steaks, there is every opportunity for you to meet and interact with the chefs who are constantly working to customize every specific need. I can’t wait to return to the hotel and try their future dining options including the The House of Grill, which offers a fine dining steak experience and Pesto that brings the authentic flavours of southern Italy to the Kingdom. At the end of your day, the Fairmont Hotel will host you at the Gentlemen’s Tonic Spa with its state-of-the-art Fitness Center, including a heated grand indoor pool with intricate and tranquilising architecture. Upon my departure I began to feel that I would like to return that evening and, someday soon, I shall.

FEBRUARY APRIL 20192019

Driving the all new Nissan Altima teaches you one thing: the future is now. In this new sedan, every drive is a journey, and every movement is smooth and effortless. The Altima isn’t just a car, it’s a companion, an assistant, and a lifestyle. The 2019 Nissan Altima was quick to impress, and is already on its way to becoming one of the most popular midsized cars on the market. So this week when we were offered the chance to take it out for a spin, we couldn’t resist. We headed out to Salmiya, with our photographers and models, to put the Altima to test on coastal roads and city drives around the Marina Mall. And we loved every moment we spent in this new Nissan Altima.

Sharp, smart and superbly sporty The all new Altima is one of the smartest saloons out there. The sleek curves are complemented perfectly by the athletic contours and floating roof. Whilst the aggressive face of the Altima gives the car a powerful appearance, with a large front grille, and slanted lights. And clinging low to the ground, the Altima is ready to take you to new speeds. Our Altima was a beautiful silver colour, but there are nine different colour options to choose from.

An interior laced with luxury The first time you take a seat in the new Nissan Altima, you’ll notice the sleek curves that continue from the exterior, around the driver’s cabin. We had a beautiful grey interior that matched the silver colour of our Altima’s exterior, and the light cloth perfectly contrasted the black dashboard. The cabin felt light and airy, and above all, spacious. There was space for both the driver and passengers to stretch out their legs, recline their seats and admire the luxury of this new sedan. But what really impressed was the high-tech dashboard. We started the engine with a simple press of the start button, and watched in awe as the dashboard lit up with all the driving information you could need. The 8-inch Nissan Connect touchscreen came to life with options for radio, navigation and more. But the real fun started when we connected our phone…

FEBRUARY APRIL 20192019

Stay connected Connecting your phone via USB sparks Apple CarPlay into action. The Nissan Connect screen becomes your phone and you can access a handful of your apps from the screen. Want to read a message or make a phone call? Just open the messages or phone app. Want to listen to your favourite playlist? You can use Apple Music, Spotify, or even listen to a podcast or audio book. You’ll also be able to access your phone’s navigation apps, and have your journey details displayed on the Nissan Connect screen. For those with Android mobile devices, there’s Android Auto, which also gives you the ability to navigate, listen to music and make calls from your phone through the car. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto give you the chance to stay connected, so even if you’re driving, you can safely accept calls, and enjoy your favourite sound tracks whilst on the road. And you don’t even need to look down, or tap the touchscreen to control it – just use voice command.

Embrace concert-quality sound Whether you use Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or the satellite radio for in-car entertainment, you can’t beat the sound quality inside the Nissan Altima. The car is fully equipped with Bose speakers, so you can enjoy every song through a topquality sound system. And if you decide to crank it up, you’ll have your very own in-car concert, with quality sound bouncing around the cabin.

Intelligence at its finest The all new Altima is fitted with the Nissan Intelligent Mobility system, and ProPilot Assist, making it one of the most intelligent and futuristic midsize cars on the market. Nissan Intelligent Mobility system makes every blind spot a non-issue. Moving lanes? The blind spot camera and detector will let you know if there’s someone in your blind spot, or any oncoming traffic. Parking has never been easier, with parking sensors at the front and rear of the vehicle, you’ll be guided into spaces hassle-free. The Altima even has cameras that look down at the curb, helping you park perfectly curb side, and within the lines of bay parking spaces. The ProPilot Assist feature brings us to closer to the future of driving than ever before. Whilst stuck in traffic, the Altima can use ProPilot Assist to keep a safe distance from the car in front. It will tell you when to brake, and if you don’t get there in time, it can even emergency brake for you. And when traffic starts moving it can help you speed up again. It’s also useful for highway driving – it will keep you centred in your lane, even if the road starts to curve. And it’s always going to make sure you’re a safe distance from the car in front.

Feel the power Whilst the new Nissan Altima is one of the safest sedans you could drive, thanks to its intelligent systems, it still packs a punch. With up to 188 horsepower (depending on the model and engine you choose), the 2019 Altima can reach new speeds. Enjoy the thrill of acceleration, and make every drive an adventure. .

JANUARY APRIL 2019 2019

The verdict The all new Nissan Altima has made the future of driving affordable. This impressive new sedan combines power, safety and technology to create a vehicle that’s a dream to drive. With a driver’s cabin that you won’t want to leave, and the Apple CarPlay system that keeps you connected with the outside world, the Altima has everything you could want from a car. It’s practical, it’s luxurious, and it makes for an enjoyable driving experience. Any driver would feel proud to pull up in this beautiful Nissan, and we certainly enjoyed every minute of our drive around Salmiya.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK TO SOMEONE: A THERAPIST, HER

THE MOTHER-IN-LAW by Sally Hepworth

THERAPIST, AND OUR LIVES REVEALED

THE EDITOR by Steven Rowley

BOY SWALLOWS UNIVERSE by Trent Dalton

by Lori Gottlieb One day, Lori Gottlieb is a therapist who helps patients in her Los Angeles practice. The next, a crisis causes her world to come crashing down. Enter Wendell, the quirky but seasoned therapist in whose office she suddenly lands. As Gottlieb explores the inner chambers of her patients’ lives—a self-absorbed Hollywood producer, a young newlywed diagnosed with a terminal illness, a senior citizen threatening to end her life on her birthday if nothing gets better, and a twenty-something who can’t stop hooking up with the wrong guys—she finds that the questions they are struggling with are the very ones she is now bringing to Wendell: about desire and need, guilt and redemption, meaning and mortality, loneliness and love.

Someone once told me that you have two families in your life - the one you are born into and the one you choose. Yes, you may get to choose your partner, but you don't choose your mother-in-law. The cackling mercenaries of fate determine it all. From the moment Lucy met Diana, she was kept at arm's length. Diana is exquisitely polite, but Lucy knows, even after marrying Oliver, that they'll never have the closeness she'd been hoping for.

After years of struggling as a writer in 1990s New York City, James Smale finally gets his big break when his novel sells to an editor at a major publishing house: Jackie Kennedy. Jackie, or Mrs. Onassis as she's known in the office, has fallen in love with James's candidly autobiographical novel, one that exposes his own dysfunctional family. But when the book's forthcoming publication threatens to unravel already fragile relationships, both within his family and with his partner, James finds that he can't bring himself to finish the manuscript.

An utterly wonderful debut novel of love, crime, magic, fate and a boy’s coming of age, set in 1980s Australia and infused with the originality, charm, pathos, and heart of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The mind can take you anywhere you want to go

I MISS YOU WHEN I BLINK: ESSAYS by Mary Laura Philpott

The runaway bestseller Lilac Girls introduced the real-life heroine Caroline Ferriday. This sweeping new novel, set a generation earlier and also inspired by true events, features Caroline's mother, Eliza, and follows three equally indomitable women from St. Petersburg to Paris under the shadow of World War I.

At school Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other. He’s popular and well-adjusted, star of the school soccer team while she is lonely, proud, and intensely private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her housekeeping job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers—one they are determined to conceal.

Princess Hesina of Yan has always been eager to shirk the responsibilities of the crown, dreaming of an unremarkable life. But when her beloved father is found dead, she’s thrust into power, suddenly the queen of a surprisingly unstable kingdom. What’s more, Hesina believes that her father was murdered— and that the killer is someone close to her.

WOMEN TALKING Miriam Toews One evening, eight Mennonite women climb into a hay loft to conduct a secret meeting. For the past two years, each of these women, and more than a hundred other girls in their colony, has been repeatedly violated in the night by demons coming to punish them for their sins. Now that the women have learned they were in fact drugged and attacked by a group of men from their own community, they are determined to protect themselves and their daughters from future harm. While the men of the colony are off in the city, attempting to raise enough money to bail out the rapists and bring them home, these women—all illiterate, without any knowledge of the world outside their community and unable even to speak the language of the country they live in—have very little time to make a choice: Should they stay in the only world they’ve ever known or should they dare to escape?

Acclaimed essayist and bookseller Mary Laura Philpott presents a charmingly relatable and wise memoir-inessays about what happened after she checked off all the boxes on her successful life’s to-do list and realized she might need to reinvent the list—and herself.

Miriam Toews Miriam Toews is a Canadian writer of Mennonite descent. She grew up in Steinbach, Manitoba and has lived in Montreal and London, before settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Toews studied at the University of Manitoba and the University of King's College in Halifax, and has also worked as a freelance newspaper and radio journalist. Her non-fiction book "Swing Low: A Life" was a memoir of her father, a victim of lifelong depression. Her 2004 novel "A Complicated Kindness" was her breakthrough work, spending over a year on the Canadian bestseller lists and winning the Governor General's Award for English Fiction. The novel, about a teenage girl who longs to escape her small Russian Mennonite town and hang out with Lou Reed in the slums of New York City, was also nominated for the Giller Prize and was the winning title in the 2006 edition of Canada Reads.

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

SHAZAM! Directed by David F. Sandberg | Written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke

S

ince the 2018 huge success of the colorful and fun-filled Aquaman, DC has finally learned that melodrama and dark tones are not what audiences want from their superhero films. Shazam may not bring in such big box office numbers as Aquaman, but it should do well in spite of it being a familiar story of a superhero discovering his powers. The two writers on this film pulled off a movie perfect for middle-graders and as a PG-13 film, it hits all the proper notes in tone, levity and heart. There is a very solid balancing act at work here and Asher Angel and Zachary Levi who play Billy Batson/Shazam respectively, turn in some good scenes throughout the film.

Here come the spoilers! The last wizard, Shazam, is protecting the seven realms from the seven deadly sins. He is old and needs to find his ‘Champion’, aka Successor, to take over protection of the Rock Of Eternity which all magic flows from. Many people, mostly kids, are transported to the Rock of Eternity to test their worthiness to possess the powers of Shazam. Everyone fails the test as they get tempted by the deadly sins to seize power that would break them free from their imprisonment. A young boy gets shunned by his brother and father when he tries to tell them about the experience he had with Shazam and the Rock of Eternity. Jump to present day Philadelphia and we are introduced to Billy Batson who is in foster care and keeps running away in search of his mother (they were separated when he was as a young child). This element of Billy being a foster kid and going to a group home, does wonders for connecting to kids in foster care. There are over 400,000 kids in foster care in the states and I think this film handles the emotional backstory for Billy perfectly. 62

APRIL 2019

Billy gives this group home family a chance. The next day after defending his new foster brother during a fight with bullies at the school, Billy escapes to the subway and then gets transported to the Rock of Eternity where Shazam gives him his powers to be the new Champion. The film handles him discovering his powers with lots of humor and playfulness. I mean, what would a 12-year-old kid do with an adult body with superpowers? The young boy from the opening of the film, who was told he wasn’t worthy, grew up to become the villain and battles Billy for the ultimate control over the magical powers. Now, it is a quick line in the film, but if you paid attention or a fan of the comic books, you would know that SHAZAM is actually an acronym of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. The only minor thing I would change in this film is to explore the Wisdom of Solomon. The other powers get well covered in the film and story, but never did Billy use the wisdom of the Gods. This would perhaps have been revealed as the ultimate power the deadly sins were most afraid of. This could have enhanced the final climatic scene with Billy getting instantly visited by way of time freeze by spirits representing the Gods who take him through a crash course of the history of the Rock of Eternity and their former wizards etc. Then they send Billy back in the same instant during battle where he realizes what he must do to win the battle against the deadly sins. I would say this is a minor thing and perhaps being saved for a sequel which I hope this film gets. Kudos to the writers on the way they handled the foster family elements, as well as Billy’s journey to find his long lost mother with heart and levity. For that alone, I give this film a ‘Writing a movie RIGHT’ nod! Thanks for reading ‘Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

No phone bills. The weight of figuring out what to wear to school tomorrow. Having a crush in your class who doesn't notice you beside them, so you're scared to make the first move. Owning an unfamiliar body that stretches and morphs when you're not paying attention, only to be informed by family and friends and subsequently blushing after being told that you're changing. Whether you're anticipating it, currently going through it, or have gone through it and came out on the other side, being a teenager is quite the challenge. It's literally a mind-altering event that causes one to become on the road to the person that they'll ultimately become, both physically and mentally. But in this stressful time of clenched fists, purple faces, and salty tears, there are weightless times without responsibility that are later looked back on with a smile on the face. Ellie Goulding's latest tune, "Sixteen," is dedicated to this period defined by acne. Her memories are crystal-clear sequences as she looks back in this mid-tempo jam and fondly recalls simpler times — simple as in fewer bills, because in terms of emotions, being a teenager is much more difficult than being a child or an adult.

Nostalgia is quite a phenomenon. It's why we prefer older sitcoms and cartoons to current ones. Aside from being probably funnier, we unconsciously soak in the atmosphere surrounding them so we're not just thinking of our favorite actors and trademark catchphrases. We're obsessed with the pop-culture environment and that sense of freedom that eludes us because, let's face it, being younger, no matter what age, often amounts to more freedom. P!nk's new single, "Can We Pretend," is all about this kind of nostalgia. But in this instance, it's for a decomposed relationship. By living in a nostalgic world removed from reality, can it be brought back to life? www.cpmagazine.net

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote

Louise Brooks the 1920s silver screen sensation who never met a rule she didn’t break, epitomized the restless, reckless spirit of the Jazz Age. But, just a few years earlier, she was a 15 year-old student in Wichita, Kansas for whom fame and fortune were only dreams. When the opportunity arises for her to go to New York to study with a leading dance troupe, her mother (Victoria Hill) insists there be a chaperone. Norma Carlisle (Elizabeth McGovern), a local society matron who never broke a rule in her life, impulsively volunteers to accompany Louise (Haley Lu Richardson) to New York for the summer.

Loosely based on Miguel Cervantes' 17th-century novel, this is the story of an advertising executive (Johnny Depp) who gets transported a few hundred years into the past, where he meets Don Quixote (Jean Rochefort) and takes on the identity of Sancho Panza, the windmill-fighter's sidekick. Many of the actors will play both contemporary roles and characters during the Renaissance-era scenes. The story will bounce back and forth between past and present.

ashion and women empowerment. Two iconic names come to mind when we speak of such a topic, the first one being Haifa Wehbe, a Lebanese artist admired for her strong personality and determination to be the best possible version of herself. Haifa has created her own path to success since day one and many try to imitate her, especially when it comes to her style. Haifa is known for being a fashion icon and a trendsetter who recently launched her own fashion line which spreads awareness about gender equality. MICROBLADING by:

M

icroblading is a manual, semi-permanent technique of hyperrealistic eyebrow drawing in which the shape of eyebrows is calculated according to facial morphology and golden proportion. The technique is intended for anyone over the age of 18 (persons under 18 must be accompanied by their parents) who wants to correct the aesthetic problems of their eyebrows. In order to successfully perform the treatment, the skin must not be in the regeneration process, i.e. it must not be damaged. If there is eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, acne, pimples or any damage in the eyebrow area, 7 days before treatment the client can use a cream that will eliminate the problems (instructions for use can be found on the package). Pain during the treatment is relative. Scared or apprehensive clients usually feel stronger pain, while other clients compare such pain with the one they feel when plucking out their eyebrows. In addition, with women menstruating there is an increased sensitivity to pain, so it is not recommended to do the treatment at this time. It is possible to use light anesthetics, in the form of cream or liquid, to completely eliminate pain during the treatment. Abrasive treatments such as peelings, fruit acids, chemical peels, laser treatments and similar should be avoided a month before the treatment. Also, one month before the treatment, botox or fillers should not be used. Pigment is applied manually in the surface layer of the dermis. Pigment is determined according to the natural colour of the eyebrows and hair. After healing, pigment can become several nuances brighter compared to natural hair colour.

None of these factors are under the artist’s control, thus providing any guarantee for the treatment is not possible. Before the treatment always consult with your artist if you: Have problematic skin Have serious health issues Take certain medications Already have an old PMU on your eyebrows Before the treatment: Familiarize yourself with the post-treatment care procedure. The skin should not be burnt, nor in recovery or regeneration process. The following treatments are not recommended 30 days before the treatment: Botox and fillers Fruit or lactic acids Laser treatments Chemical peel Exposure to strong sunlight

Symmetry is calculated using a brow application. It is calculated while the client’s eyes are closed because in that way mimetic muscles that can affect eyebrow symmetry are relaxed. Pictures of prepared shapes, as well as all other important information, are stored in the application, under the Treatment History section. Strokes are always drawn in the direction of natural hair growth in order to achieve hyper-realistic eyebrow look. Treatment is done by using sterile and disposable tools, while pigments are of the highest standard. Correction is done a month after the treatment as 10-15% of strokes are lost after the first treatment. Inserted pigment is very dark during the first 5 to 7 days. 7 days later, it loses up to 40% of its intensity. If you think the pigment is too dark, do not try to fade it by yourself. Be patient, first wait for 7 days until it fades away naturally. For how long the pigment will be retained mostly depends on the skin oiliness. The oilier the skin, the shorter pigment retention is. Sweating and sun exposure also affect pigment retention. On average, expected time until new refreshment of pigment is 10 to 12 months. If the skin is oily, it takes up to 6 months. Healing is completely done 28 days later and then it is necessary to add the pigment that was lost in the meantime. If the skin is problematic and oily, several such corrections can be made. Post-treatment care makes 70% of total treatment success. Conscientiously stick and adhere to the given advice, because if you don’t do that, you can lose up to 80% of drawn strokes. Rinsing and applying the cream is of great significance. How successful the treatment will be depends on:

MY FIRST BABY SHOWER

eing a mother is a joyous thing. When you are expecting for the first time, you experience a special tingling feeling. An overwhelming sense of motherhood takes over with a rush of anxiety, joy and a long list of things to do that just keeps getting longer. This can lead to confusion, despite the offer of help from your spouse, friends or family. But don’t be afraid to accept those offers of help and assistance. It’s not that you can’t handle it alone, but sharing some of the responsibilities of motherhood with people who love and support you can transform this phase in your life to a much happier and manageable one. My advice is to accept the help and take as much advice from your mother as you can, even though sometimes it may seem too much information in a short space of time. Don’t worry, it happens to us all but we learn plenty more when the baby arrives and we take it a day at a time. I remember my visit to my obstetrician when I was expecting my first child. Soon after the routine examination of my fourth month, I asked him candidly if it was a good time to tell the world I was pregnant and prepare for a baby shower for my little Amber. He smiled with surprise and suggested that first, I should shop for her nursery. I told him I’d already taken care of that two months previously. He then smiled again, but this time with relief knowing how new mothers are often anxious and over-prepared. He then gladly nodded his head. Yes, it is time! For me, that was the news I had been waiting for and anticipating since I found out I was pregnant. So, with a notepad in hand, I said my goodbyes and immediately started writing all sorts of things to buy, friends and family to invite, colour palettes to 68

choose from, a theme, a venue… and the list went on. So much so, my head became heavy with dread. I was seriously worried. A second later my mobile rang. It was my sister. I told her that I as ok, the baby was fine and that I needed to arrange baby shower. “Don’t you know that’s what sisters are for?” she asked. With those words, I felt a huge weight lifted from my shoulders. “Thank you,” I said, “I love you.” Two weeks later I received a message from my sister asking me to meet her at a hotel for dinner – my favourite hotel! I didn’t think much of it as I made my way to meet her at 7pm but just as I stepped out of the lift to see my sister, lo and behold, I was surrounded by everyone! By everyone, I mean friends from college, mates from school, my work colleagues and my entire family. What a pleasant surprise! It was simply perfect. Pink and yellow colours were splashed everywhere with a unicorn rainbow theme that glittered the eyes. There were canapés that made your mouth water. I felt truly loved and that I had everything I needed at that moment and so much more. I will always appreciate what my sister did for me that day with the help of all my friends, my mom and all the people I love. This event made me realise that life is so much sweeter, better and much more bearable if shared with all the people who love and care for you. I wish you all, especially the new moms, all the happiness you deserve, shared with all the people that love and care for you unconditionally. Stay happy, safe and fashionable my beautiful new mothersto-be.

Porsche presents the Cayenne Coupé PRESS RELEASES The Ferrari F8 Tributo makes its debut in Kuwait during a spectacular display of Power and Performance from the Prancing Horse Stable

Porsche is adding an even sportier vehicle to the third generation of the its highly successful SUV range – the Cayenne Coupé. “The Coupé includes all the technical highlights of the current Cayenne, but has an even more dynamic design and new technical details that position it as more progressive, athletic, and emotional,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. The highlights of the new Cayenne model include sharper lines with a unique rear section, an adaptive rear spoiler, a rear bench with the characteristics of two individual seats. The new model also offers two different roof concepts, which includes a panoramic fixed glass roof fitted as standard and an optional carbon roof.

impression. The rear number plate is integrated into the bumper, making the vehicle seem closer to the ground. With its adaptive roof spoiler, the current Cayenne Turbo was the first SUV to feature this type of active aerodynamics. The new Cayenne Coupé picks up that ball and runs with it. On each Cayenne Coupé model, a roof spoiler is combined with a new adaptive rear spoiler as part of Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA). The spoiler – harmonically integrated into this model’s silhouette – extends by 135 mm at speeds of 90 km/h and up, increasing the contact pressure on the rear axle, while PAA simultaneously enhances efficiency.

A steeply sloping roofline creates unrivalled elegance Proportions that are more dynamic combine with custom design elements to lend the new Cayenne Coupé unrivalled elegance. “The significantly more steep roof line that falls away to the rear makes the Cayenne Coupé appear even more dynamic, and positions it as the sportiest-looking model in the segment,” says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. That effect is supported by a roof spoiler, which accentuates the distinctive Coupé silhouette. The front windscreen and A-pillar are shallower than in the Cayenne, courtesy of a roof edge that has been lowered by around 20 millimetres. Redesigned rear doors and fenders broaden the shoulders of this vehicle by 18 millimetres, contributing to its overall muscular

Large panoramic fixed glass roof fitted as standard, with a carbon roof option The new Cayenne Coupé comes with a 2.16 m2 panoramic fixed glass roof as standard. The 0.92 m2 glazed area gives all passengers an extraordinary sense of space, while the integrated roller blind protects against sun exposure and the cold. A contoured carbon roof is optionally available for the Coupé. The centre seam gives the roof the characteristic look of a sports car, similar to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The carbon roof is available in one of the three lightweight sports packages. These packages also include the Sport Design features and new, weight-reduced 22-inch GT Design wheels, seat centres in classic checked fabric, as well as carbon and Alcantara accents in the interior. For the Cayenne Turbo Coupé, the package also includes a sports exhaust system.

‘The Murph’ is the affectionate name given by fans of the movie to the Hamilton watch that stars in the film and is integral to the plot. No other movie appearance epitomizes the importance of Hamilton’s Hollywood collaboration quite like ‘the Murph’ in Interstellar. In the film, the existence of humanity is under threat and a team from NASA uses interstellar travel to try to find a new planet. Cooper, a former NASA pilot, joins the mission which means leaving his daughter, Murph. Cooper gives Murph his watch. From inside the ‘tesseract’ of the fifth dimension Cooper sends a message using Morse code through the seconds hand of Murph’s watch. It is the quantum data that will help humanity escape dying Earth. When she works out the formula, Murph shouts ‘Eureka!’ to mark her discovery. Humanity is saved. It was clear that fans of the movie wanted an opportunity to own a piece of cinema history that means something to them. Now that Hamilton is celebrating our cinema year, we’ve made the Khaki Field Murph. With its 42 mm stainless steel case, black dial, beige Super-LumiNova® inlaid hands, H-10 automatic movement with 80-hour power reserve and black leather strap, the Khaki Field Murph is an exact reproduction of the movie watch.

Testing of the new Porsche Taycan has entered the final stage

Porsche’s first purely electrically driven sports car, the Taycan, is currently completing its final test drives before it enters series production. In Scandinavia, just a few kilometres away from the Arctic Circle, it is proving its potential in terms of driving dynamics on snow and ice. At the same time, Porsche engineers are taking advantage of the summer in the Southern Hemisphere. In South Africa, they are conducting per- formance tests, as well as final adjustments in terms of continuous performance and reproducibility. In Dubai they are carrying out hot-climate endurance runs and testing battery charging under extreme conditions. The 30 countries across the globe in which these comprehensive tests are being carried out have temperatures that range from minus 35 to plus 50 degree Celsius. “After carrying out computer simulations and comprehensive bench tests early on, we have now reached the final phase of this demanding testing programme,” underlines the vice president of the model line, Stefan Weckbach:

“Before the Taycan is launched on the market at the end of the year, we will have covered approximately six million kilometres across the globe. We are already very happy with the current status of the vehicles. The Taycan is going to be a true Porsche.” Of course, at Porsche, electric cars have to undergo the same rigorous testing pro- gramme as sport cars with combustion engines. In addition to displaying superior per- formance, this always includes proving unrestricted suitability for everyday use in all climate conditions. Particularly demanding features such as charging the battery or temperature control of the drive train and the interior under extreme conditions are additional aspects in the batterypowered models. Other typical Porsche development targets include circuit performance, multiple accel-erations, as well as a range suitable for everyday use.

Nespresso expands The Positive Cup Initiative in the Middle East with Recycling Program Launch in Kuwait

Nespresso has extended its sustainability commitments in the Middle East with the launch of its first recycling program in the Kuwait. Nespresso is the first global coffee brand in the Middle East to instigate a bespoke recycling program for its product refuse and has invested considerable resources to fund the program, without imparting any additional cost to the consumer. The new recycling program will give customers the facility to recycle Nespresso capsules through the network of specialist Boutiques across the country. The service is also available from the convenience of the customer’s own home, thanks to a pick-up service that collects used capsules with the delivery of the new order. Offices, hotels and restaurants which serve Nespresso coffee can also avail of the recycling program through a used capsule pick-up service. In 2011, Nespresso commissioned Quantis, a team of world-leading experts in the field of environmental life cycle assessment (LCA), to compare the environmental impact of all options to make an espresso coffee in a Nespresso machine. The study showed that when it comes to environmental performance, Nespresso aluminium capsules that are recycled after use are the optimal way to make an espresso coffee in a Nespresso machine, among all investigated options. Here in the Middle East, even with the emergence of ‘green’ initiatives and the rise of a more sustainable approach, resident’s waste output is still at record levels. Faced with the challenge that, as in most markets, the Nespresso capsule cannot be recycled via traditional waste collection and recycling systems; Nespresso decided to invest in its own bespoke recycling device, developed in line with its global standards. The Nespresso recycling operation will be managed by MRC, a leading eco-industrial company headquartered and listed in Kuwait, offering sustainable waste management and recycling since 1987. The Nespresso capsule recycling device has a working capacity to recycle up to 8,000 aluminum capsules per hour, separating the coffee grounds from the aluminum. The aluminum will then go through a smelting process and can be recycled infinitely to make new aluminum products, while the coffee grounds will be used as a natural fertilizer for agriculture and gardening at a local farm in Kuwait. Recycling aluminum requires only 5% of the energy used to make new aluminum and the process involves simply re-melting the metal, which is far less expensive and energy intensive than creating new aluminum. With the introduction of capsule recycling in the Kuwait, customers can boost their sustainability credentials by recycling their used capsules and reducing their personal carbon footprint.

The chromatic tone is inspired by the rich colours of the Italian landscape. The journey continues in another elegant area of Milan, Porta Venezia, with a unique visit to the exclusive Giorgetti Atelier. On three of the 12 Giorgetti wood varieties (Ash, Walnut and Maple), different processes are used: first mechanical and then manual which consists of carving, turning and modelling. Next is the turn of Milan's most exclusive zone the “Quadrilatero della Moda.” Maserati, synonymous with style, has chosen via Pietro Verri, location of the Concept Store of Alcantara. A global ambassador of 'Made in Italy', Alcantara is a company founded in 1972, that combines outstanding designs with great efforts regarding sustainability that have earned Alcantara the Carbon Neutrality certification.

LEO

Happy birthday, Aries! The annual new moon in Aries on April 5 marks a whole new personal cycle and rebirth. So, who are you today and what do you want? Do your actions align with your words? You may not be ready to tell all, but acknowledge the desires and/or fears that motivate you, especially secret ones you rarely admit, even to yourself. Then they need not unconsciously overshadow your perceptions. As Jupiter stations retrograde on the tenth, you’re at a turning point in your journey, realizing your true authority and power in the world. You have more freedom than you imagine. Keep the big picture in mind, explore your options, and make course corrections if necessary. The journey is the destination.
