RECYCL ABLE

Using an object repeatedly without treatment. This reduces pollution and the need for waste to be processed, making it a more sustainable process and reduces the environmental impact.

Processing used materials (waste) into new, useful products. Giving products a ‘Second Life’, by taking out material that is of use and making another item via a manufacturing process.

CO M P O S T A BLE

BIO DEGRADABL E A material that can undergo biological anaerobic or aerobic degradation, but leads to the production of CO2, H2O, methane, biomass, and mineral salts, and without a specific time frame eg some ‘biodegradable’ plastics can take 1000 years.

Compostable products are all biodegradable, but Biodegradables are not all compostable.

Summar y Reusable is the long term and ideal solution because there is not any waste to process.

Recycling is the next best after Reusable, because waste is given a ‘second life’.

Compostable is preferred over Biodegradable because waste will completely decompose.

A product that is broken down naturally using heat, light, moisture and CO2. To be certified as “Compostable” a product must be Certified to EU Regulation EN13432 which means it will completely decompose in industrial composting in a period of 60-90 days.

Wa y a h e ad The EU Directive on Single Use Plastics... explained.

Bac kgr ound The EU has carried out extensive research into waste on our beaches and in our rivers, streams & oceans, and they identified the items most commonly found, and these account for over 65% of all waste in the water.

Therefore, the directive is a plan to reduce plastic marine pollution.

What does it mean for me ?

The outcome is many plastic products and materials will be banned from use, and in particular single use plastics. Therefore, you will need to be aware of these restrictions and the new laws.

Banned Pr od ucts In April 2020, products that will be banned are Plastic Straws & Drink Stirrers.

In 2021, the next phase that will ban Plastic Cutlery and Plastic Plates including anything with a plant base eg PLA or CPLA, because if plant based products end up in the oceans, rivers or streams, they will behave like plastic and will not break down.

Banned Mater ia l s Materials that are to be banned include all Oxy-Degradable plastics.

These plastics have an additive that makes the material fragment, the additive however means this cannot be recycled.

In 2021, Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) will be banned. This material is most commonly used for takeaway containers, coffee cups and plates.

However the hospitality/catering market needs a mixture of reusable, recyclable and compostable, and the objective of Green Planet is to give you the choice that meets their needs, meets the legal requirements and is the correct solution for their business.
