IRIS VAN HERPEN

WHERE FASHION MEETS TECHNOLOGY

Founded in 2007, Iris van Herpen has always lived and designed by the motto: “Normal rules don’t apply.” She was an early adopter of 3D Printing within the fashion world and is known for her extraordinary designs and runway shows. She combines craftsmanship and innovation to create sculptural works of art through fashion in order to complement shape and form while extending the human body.

“A lot of avant-garde designers are aware of her, but her influence isn’t going to be felt until the technological areas she’s experimenting in move beyond these sculptural designs into more prosaic clothing.”

CRAFTSMANSHIP & INNOVATION

In addition to 3D printing, she is known for using techniques such as laser-cutting and injection molding. Currently, she is experimenting with developing new fabrics such as bio-fabricated leather, synthetic silks, textiles that alter shape in reaction to elements like water and heat, as well as light-refracting, mirrored fabric.

Since we’ve opened, our point of view is that if someone else is doing what we’re doing, we should move on...we have a built-in concept that constantly challenges itself to refresh. ”

-Humberto Leon, co-founder

CURATORS OF INNOVATORS

Founded in 2002, by Humberto Leon and Carol Lim. The concept of the brand was based upon the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Each year, they focus on a specific country for inspiration and collaborations. They offer a private label collection, multi-shop department-like stores featuring collaborations with emerging as well as established brands, and a showroom.

SHOPPING AS ENTERTAINMENT

+Awesome, creative and exhilarating atmosphere and fixtures.

+Constantly evolving and changing each year with new country of focus

“It’s a new way of looking at a department store; we’re not a small specialty store.”

Opening Ceremony

With constantly evolving store displays, visiting OCNY is always an act of exploration. ‘Zines, souvenirs, and art installations make every shopping trip feel like a voyage of discovery. ”

-OPENINGCEREMONY.US

FASHION DISCOVERY ZONE

With new brands constantly moving in and out on a regular basis, Opening Ceremony is shaping the mold for the next generation of department stores. With a mixture of product ranging from high to low prices, local to international collaborations, and styles from nostalgic to cutting edge, they always have a lot to offer and surprise customers with. The mechanics of Opening Ceremony as a brand have morphed it into a platform for artists and designers, emergent and existing, to interact with and create products more accessible to the masses.

IVH FOR OC

Iris van Herpen would benefit from this collaboration because it makes her clothes more affordable as well as more accessible to the masses. It also gives her brand better name recognition and would show that the techniques she uses in her couture are those of the future for all of fashion.

Opening Ceremony would benefit because it is a new and exciting collaboration. They are credited for catapulting a great deal of brands and fashion trends. A collaboration with IVH would mean exclusivity and could very well make a huge impact and statement, not only in their stores, but in the world of fashion.

Singularity

In contrast to Minimalism, Singularity explores the essence of individuality and embodies the future of fashion. The manipulation of technology is becoming more prevalent and new techniques as well as textiles are emerging and being used in experimentation throughout the realm of fashion. Instead of blending in with the masses and living a life full of simplicity, Singularity offers the eccentricity individuals crave and strive to express in their everyday lives.

CARSON

After graduating from Design school and landing a highly successful job at an international architecture firm, Carson moved to New York City to start her life. Her job requires her to travel to some of the most modern and fashion forward cities in the world. Therefore, Carson has a particular aesthetic because she does not like blending in. Her background in architecture allows her to appreciate form and structure, which are elements she likes to translate through her style. She is extremely outgoing and confident and likes everyone to know that when she walks into a room. Due to her early success at such a young age, Carson has expensive and dramatic taste that she carries through all aspects of her life.

To create an accessible, premium, womenswear capsule collection by Iris van Herpen for Opening Ceremony in Spring 2016 utilizing techniques of the future, such as 3D Printing, for the creative and confident individual who appreciates artistic expression versus simplicity.

Opportunity

OCulus

Oculus refers to the shape and form of circles and spheres, particularly eyes in this case, as well as the layers and pieces that they consist of. In relation to Singularity, Oculus plays with form on the human body creating interesting silhouettes through extension and indention.

Materials/Colors

Seeing that IVH does not use a great deal of color in her collections, a cool palette with a couple shades of blue keeps it fresh, but still fun.
