TIME TO PUT ON YOUR WARM WEATHER SHOES

Given that many readers are still dealing with the aftermath of the extreme weather experienced during the Spring – or maybe that should be ‘drying off’? – it may not make sense to start talking about summertime. That time of year, to paraphase George Gershwin, where the weather is hot and the rubber is all over the road.

But, as we step into the searing months of summer, where the mercury often defies expectations in our region, it becomes imperative to bring to the forefront an issue critical to our community—truck safety amid extreme temperatures. Summer in the Middle East is not just about soaring temperatures; it’s about the relentless heat that can significantly impact both the mechanical integrity of our trucks and the well-being of those who operate them. Understanding and mitigating these risks is not just good practice – it’s a necessity for safe and efficient fleet operations.

Firstly, let’s talk about vehicle maintenance. The heat can wreak havoc on engine performance and tire integrity. Regular checks and balances are more crucial now than ever. Overheating engines and blowouts from overinflated tires are common if not monitored closely. I urge all fleet operators to adhere strictly to a summer-specific maintenance schedule that

prioritizes coolant systems, tire pressures, and air conditioning functionality.

Equally important is the health of our drivers. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heatstroke are serious risks for truck drivers during the summer months. It’s essential that all personnel are trained to recognise the signs of heat-related illnesses and that there are clear, actionable protocols in place to prevent such conditions. Ensuring that cabins are adequately equipped with working air conditioning and that drivers are encouraged to stay hydrated and take regular breaks is fundamental.

Furthermore, adapting operation times can also play a crucial role in safety management. If possible, consider scheduling long-haul drives during cooler parts of the day. Not only does this help in avoiding the peak heat but also aids in managing driver fatigue more effectively.

Lastly, let’s talk tyres. If you’re still running with tyres that may not be up to the task, you’re risking the lives of your drivers and other road users.

In any case, let’s commit to not only enduring the summer but thriving through it with cautious and proactive measures. We owe it to our drivers, our businesses, and the very communities we serve. Stay safe, stay informed, and let’s keep our fleets running smoothly, no matter the temperature outside.

UBER TARGETING TEENAGERS TO SIGN UP

MOBILITY

Uber’s latest service, Uber Teens Accounts, is now available in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan. This new feature lets teens aged 13 to 17 request their own rides under the supervision of their parents or guardians.

This new service aims to provide families with greater flexibility and ease when managing transportation needs for their teens, while ensuring stringent safety protocols are in place to protect young riders across the four countries. As such, Uber claims the new service integrates significant safety measures into the system.

Parents or guardians can initiate this process by inviting their

teen to join through their existing Family Profile in the Uber app.

Upon acceptance, the teen will be guided to download the app, set up their Teen account, and undergo a mandatory safety onboarding process before they can start booking rides independently.

Pia Tabet, the General Manager for Uber in the UAE, Qatar, and Jordan, expressed enthusiasm about the new feature, stating, “Teen accounts are built with transparency in mind so that there are no surprises for parents, teens, or drivers. Whether it’s a ride to an internship or from football practice, parents will have real-time notifications and live trip tracking capabilities to monitor their teen’s movements for peace of mind.”

Only highly rated, experienced drivers who have passed local screening and background checks are eligible to accept rides from teen accounts. Drivers also have the option to opt-out of receiving trip requests from teens.

Toyota GR86 Coupe debuts in Dubai

‘SUHOOR ON THE TRACK’ EVENT AT THE DUBAI AUTODROME, HOSTED BY AL-FUTTAIM TOYOTA, DEBUTS NEW GR

Toyota GR owners in the United Arab Emirates were treated to the first look at the new Toyota GR86 Coupe. The unveiling took place during the ‘Suhoor on the Track’ event at the Dubai Autodrome, hosted by Al-Futtaim Toyota.

A decade after the launch of its predecessor, the FT86, the new GR86 evolves with a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, staying true to Toyota’s commitment to fun, responsive driving experiences. It incorporates advancements like a lower center of gravity and increased frame rigidity for better stability and steering. The GR86 inherits the front-independent MacPherson struts and rear double-wishbone suspension

system featured on the FT86, with a performance tuned for an even higher level of response and stable handling. The successful lowering of the centre of gravity is central to the car’s superior handling and exhilarating driving experience. As for the overall dimensions of the new GR86, they are close to those of its predecessor, yet, the height has been lowered by 10 mm (to 1,310 mm), while 5 mm has been added to the wheelbase (2,575 mm).

With its wide stance, the rearwheel-drive coupe’s handling changes come in the form of front and rear-frame reinforcements that increase rigidity. Functional exterior air vents were also added to further support

steering stability. In addition, weight-shaving details, such as aluminium roof panels and fenders, ensure a nimble curb weight of just over 1,270 kg.

The 2.4L naturally aspirated, horizontally opposed fourcylinder boxer engine brings a significant power upgrade, increasing from 197 to 233 hp and 205 to 250 nm of torque. The power boost stems from a series of tweaks, including increased bore size, changes to the intake and exhaust systems, and optimization of the Toyota D-4S dual injection technology. These deliver a responsive and powerful driving experience, particularly when coming out of curves onto straight roads.

In addition, drivers can choose between a 6-speed manual (MT) or automatic transmission (AT). The bigger engine also improves zero-to-100 km/h, from 7.6 to 6.3 seconds for the MT and from 8.2 to 6.9 seconds for the AT.

With a refined, aerodynamic profile, it boasts a sleek and assertive look with a long hood and short rear deck highlighting its racing-inspired proportions. The front features a GR-specific Functional MATRIX ‘G Mesh’ Grille, which fuses performance and expressiveness. Its angular LED headlights complement the aerodynamic front air dams and vents, with side sill spoilers to aid steering responsiveness and stability. The tightened wheel

THE EXE181 REPRESENTS A LEAP FORWARD INTO A NEW ERA FOR THE COMPANY

British-born MG Motor unveiled its EXE181 concept car at this year’s prestigious Beijing Auto Show. Unveiled only weeks after MG’s new Cyberster model journeyed across the Middle East, the EXE181 concept car is further evidence of the brand’s desire to embrace the future of electric mobility.

Similar to the electric sportscar, which made its debut as a concept in 2021, the EXE181 represents a leap forward into a new era of automotive innovation and excellence. Developed by the brand’s UK Design Centre, the EXE181 concept car pays tribute to the legendary EX181, a vehicle that set a world speed record for its category in 1957 that still stands to this day. This historic achievement by Sir Stirling Moss endures as testament to MG’s engineering prowess and commitment to excellence. The EXE181 takes clear inspiration from the EX181’s design, featuring aerodynamic shapes to reduce drag and enhance efficiency. The interior of the EXE181 reflects its purposeful design, with a lightweight and compact structure designed for straight-line speed. The front cockpit opens entirely forward, and the seats pay homage to the original British TARTAN design, combining tradition with modernity. Furthermore, the EXE181 features a unique UI design inspired by aircraft cockpits, incorporating a streamlined steering wheel display and HUD to enhance the driving experience.

Tom Lee, Managing Director of MG Motor Middle East, said: “The unveiling of the EXE181 is another clear demonstration of the eye-catching progress that the brand is making both globally and regionally. THE EXPRESS DELIVERS

T&FME tests the Renault Express van during the rain in Dubai

The Renault Express Van emerges as a commendable successor to the muchappreciated Dacia Dokker, especially appealing to small and large businesses seeking a practical utility vehicle without a hefty price tag. With its release, Renault strategically splits its offerings into two segments within the small van category. The Express, specifically tailored for commercial use, contrasts with the more luxurious Kangoo, which competes in Europe with the likes of VW Caddy and models from Stellantis.

T&FME was handed the keys to its test subject the day before the major rains

that closed up much of Dubai in April. This effectively curtailed an extended trip in terms of mileage but it did mean that we got to test in real site conditions. But more on that later.

At first glance, the Express aligns seamlessly with Renault’s current design language, sporting a new grille that reflects the brand’s current aesthetics, albeit with a focus on simplicity and costeffectiveness. The van features grey bumpers and mirrors, a choice likely influenced by its utilitarian market segment.

Internally, the van impresses with a modern, ergonomically sound dashboard made of durable hard plastic, offering ample storage solutions including a lockable

compartment and a designated slot for a mobile phone to serve as navigation. However, the cabin space, particularly for the passenger, feels a bit cramped, especially when attempting to recline the seat, due to the obstructive metal partition.

The wide-angle mirror located in the passenger’s sun visor is said to expand your right-hand lateral field of vision, providing greater comfort and safety. While it is supposed to let you see anything that may be hidden behind the panelled partition, the field of vision is much more restrictive than you would wish for.

Cargo-wise, the Express offers a single length variant, providing a respectable

3.3 cubic meters of space, accessible via an asymmetrically divided wing door and a sliding side door, making daily operations convenient. The base cargo area comes bare, with potential space for enhancements like wooden cladding and side protection. In total, you can expect to stow 750kg of cargo all accessible via the sliding side door or the two rear doors.

The 1.6l engine on the vehicle tested rates at 110hp and features a multipoint injection system. As ever, fuel efficiency may depend on the driver’s capability to get the most out of the manual transmission. A major plus is the Express’ quiet operation, dynamic performance, and impressive fuel economy,

maintaining efficiency even under load. Precisely what you want from a cargo carrier.

And it has a tonne of features too with driver and passenger air bags, ABS and ESP, Emergency Brake Assist, remote locking, and reassuringly effective AC.

From a price perspective, the Renault Express is competitively tagged, at AED 59,900, and the van’s price and customisation options make it a viable choice for those looking to tailor the vehicle to specific needs.

It is worth noting that the virtue of mini van driving is that you get an experience akin to driving an estate car, albeit when it’s not fully laden. Plus, you are getting great fuel efficiency. Taking the vehicle out

into the aftermath of the flooding that hit Dubai, the van really came into its own driving impeccably in the wet conditions. It ably powered over areas where sand had collected proving that it could be a worthy addition to most sites in the UAE.

Verdict

The Renault Express Van stands out as a simple, reliable, and aesthetically pleasing option for businesses and individuals seeking a functional small van. Its competitive pricing and practical features likely ensure its popularity, especially among those who valued the earlier Dacia Dokker for similar reasons.

Galadari Automobiles CEO Axel Dreyer talks to T&FME about the significance of taking Mazda into the

premium segment

With the influx of new and largely Chinese brands, as well as a growing list of pre-owned outlets, into the market, the premium segment has been pushed into the sidelines as a matter of interest in Dubai. However, that doesn’t mean that it has lost its overall importance in a market where luxury and premium vehicle brands hold a strong presence, and dealerships continue to showcase the latest models and catering to the preferences of affluent residents and visitors.

The demand for premium vehicles in Dubai, then, remains robust, driven, as ever, factors such as high disposable income, a desire for luxury and status symbols, and the availability of a wide range of premium automotive brands and models. Mid-tier brands like Mazda, for instance, face a hard choice. Take on the cheaper new alternatives or try and take a place at the top table with a value proposition to tempt buyers.

Stuck in between the two segments, the Japanese brand has leaned into the rental space in recent years but, in tandem with dealer Galadari Automobiles, it

but were clearly out to signal that they are aligning with the UAE’s vision to become a premier automotive hub.

For them, the inauguration ceremony of the all-new Mazda Showroom on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, was more than just an event; it symbolised the culmination of a 50-year journey powered by commitment, growth and leadership. Inside the plush new facility they were able to push their pitch to the premium segment.

According to Mohammed Abdullatif Ibrahim Galadari, Co-Chairman and Group CEO of Galadari Brothers, the partnership with Mazda has been instrumental in the success of Galadari Brothers Group, holding a prominent position in the UAE’s automotive industry. “With more than five decades of partnership with Mazda, the company has remained committed to consistently making the customer’s experience of owning a car as exciting, enjoyable, and value-added as possible,” he emphasised.

The launch of the first-ever Mazda CX-60 and CX-90 models signifies a significant leap forward in automotive engineering and design for the brand. According to the Japanese car-maker, these are models, meticulously crafted to embody automotive perfection, to strike an ideal balance between performance and finesse.

During the opening, Axel Dreyer, CEO at Galadari Automotive Group, highlighted the distinctive features of the CX-60 and CX-90 models, emphasising their powerful and responsive engines, coupled with impressive fuel efficiency, setting new standards in the automotive landscape.

“The exclusive launch of the first-ever Mazda CX-60 and CX-90 in UAE, together with the opening of our all-new showroom, exemplifies our commitment to delivering the best possible services and models to the country,” stated Dreyer, underlining the company’s dedication to providing customers with exceptional driving experiences.

The UAE’s automotive market has evolved significantly over the years, driven by factors such as infrastructure development, changing consumer preferences, and technological advancements. T&FME looks at Al Masaood Group’s exclusive distributorship for Dongfeng’s light duty vehicles and heavy-duty trucks its major launch event in Dubai

Al Masaood Group, hosted a major event last month to launch its exclusive distributorship partnership with Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles.

The partnership was announced at the Dubai Autodrome and extends to the exclusive distributorship of Dongfeng’s DFAC (Dongfeng Automobiles Company Ltd.) – which include light duty model ranges, cementing Al Masaood’s position as one of the leading distributors of DFAC light duty trucks, vans and pick up vehicles in the UAE.

In the Middle East, particularly, these vehicles have gained popularity for their

adaptability to the region’s challenging environments and their alignment with the diverse needs of the market.

The new partnership with Dongfeng furthermore positions Al Masaood at the forefront of this shift, offering cuttingedge solutions from one of China’s leading automotive companies.

The introduction of seven new truck models, including two advanced electric vehicles (EVs), marks an expansion for Al Masaood from solely heavy-duty to a more inclusive range that encompasses light and medium-duty trucks. This broadened offering

is set to provide small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and existing clientele with a wider array of vehicles. The versatility and efficiency of these trucks, particularly the electric models, reflect a significant step towards sustainable transportation solutions, aligning with the UAE’s vision for a greener future.

Hani El Tannir, CEO of Al Masaood Group Industrial, expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership, stating, “Entering into this partnership with premier Chinese brand, Dongfeng, is an extremely exciting and important milestone for us at Al Masaood. It marks a fusion of our extensive history and expertise in the industrial sector with Dongfeng’s innovative approach to heavy and light duty trucks. Through this cooperation, we hope to offer our customers in the region products and solutions of the highest quality and value in order to further their operations and the logistics industry.”

Mohammad El Zeftawi, General Manager of Al Masaood CV&E said: “The introduction of light and medium-duty vehicles to CV&E’s portfolio in addition to heavy-duty ones, as well as some electric trucks will be excellent options for clients ranging from large corporations to emerging SMEs.

“The launch event was a huge success, and we are thrilled to have shared this launch with our partners and guests. With Dongfeng’s expertise and Al Masaood’s long-standing experience, we look forward to driving progress together.”

Dongfeng Automobile Corporation manufactures high-quality commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, newenergy vehicles, engines, auto parts, and components. The collaboration gives Al Masaood access to Dongfeng’s expertise in vehicle technology, innovative solutions, and ongoing support services.

Gong Renjun, Regional Director at Dongfeng Automobile Company said: “Partnering with Al Masaood to bring our innovative and high-quality commercial vehicles to the UAE market is a substantial opportunity for Dongfeng Automobile Corporation. Our expertise in vehicle technology and commitment to quality, combined with Al Masaood’s long-standing experience and best-in-class services, will allow us to offer tailored solutions to meet the specific needs of customers in the UAE.”

This strategic alliance between Al Masaood and Dongfeng can be expected to increase efficiency, reliability, and sustainability for business, while highlighting the growing

influence of Chinese brands in shaping the future of transportation in the Middle East.

The new venture was introduced during an impressive press conference, which saw key executives from both companies discussing the ambitious initiative. Their collaboration focuses on bringing electric and hybrid vehicles to the market, underscoring a joint commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. Their discussion provided deep insights into the strategic planning, challenges, and future prospects of this partnership.

El Tannir opened the discussion by outlining the comprehensive strategies both companies had implemented in anticipation

We’re bringing a product that makes sense to what the market requires”

of this partnership. He emphasized the importance of robust after-sales support, which is integral to their business strategy.

He explained, “The plan started in execution about a year ago when we started planning for our introduction of electric vehicles. And the plan for infrastructure addition in our service facilities, as well as the training of staff, both within the UAE with the support of our principal, as well as some people going all the way for training overseas.”

He further elaborated on the holistic approach they are taking, “It’s very much not about DNA, if you like. It’s not just about selling a product. It’s also very much about the after sales. So everything you can go from BDI to servicing to warranty inspection, et cetera, et cetera. If you don’t have the right stock, the technicians, the management of technicians, then you’re dead in the water.”

Adaptation to the region

The discussion also ventured into the dynamics of the regional automotive market and the evolving consumer preferences. El Tannir stressed the importance of aligning their products with what consumers value today—quality and economic efficiency. He remarked, “Today’s consumer across the world is looking for value, and this is very much valued today in what is quality and what is the economics of what is going on.”

Renjun added a global perspective by highlighting the rising popularity of Chinesemade vehicles, which are increasingly seen

Dongfeng Motors is making significant strides in the UAE’s automotive market with a focused introduction of their electric vehicles, via the strategic partnership with Al Masaood.

as viable alternatives to more established brands due to their competitive pricing and improved quality. “Coming with the Korean brand, Japanese brand, our product is with same quality and with best price. That’s why, for this year, lots of customers from European, Middle East, Africa, Asia, they are now trying to choose Chinese product,” he explained.

A competitive edge

The press conference also highlighted Dongfeng’s strategic approach to integrating advanced technology with their electric vehicles. Renjun outlined their commitment to not only match but exceed current market offerings. He remarked on the competitive edge Dongfeng aims to achieve by equating or surpassing the quality of Korean and Japanese brands, “Coming with the Korean brand, Japanese brand, our product is with same quality and with best price.”

Dongfeng’s strategy involves a gradual rollout of their electric vehicles, ensuring each model is optimally suited to meet the demands of the UAE market. This cautious approach is intended to solidify Dongfeng’s presence in the market, particularly focusing on segments expected to see significant growth, such as light-duty vehicles and buses.

A primary concern addressed during the conference was the performance of electric vehicles in the harsh climatic conditions of the Middle East, particularly the extreme heat. Renjun stressed the robustness of Dongfeng’s electric vehicles, which have been

If you don’t have the right stock, the technicians, then you’re dead in the water”

rigorously tested to meet global standards under various environmental conditions. He confidently stated, “For our test, all our models now, with Europen test certificates. Dongfeng’s EVs are well-equipped to handle the thermal extremes of the UAE without compromising on performance.

Looking towards the future, Dongfeng sees a significant opportunity for expansion in the electric vehicle sector within the UAE and broader Middle Eastern markets. Renjun discussed the potential for rapid growth in EV adoption, driven by global export increases and heightened demand for sustainable automotive solutions, “And especially for the Chinese market so that is more than half lots

of companies are doing export so the number increases a lot suddenly year by year this will increase more faster than you can imagine.”

The executive also touched upon the broader implications of this shift, emphasising the increasing consumer preference for vehicles that offer both quality and value. This trend positions Dongfeng favorably as they continue to enhance their offerings in terms of technology, cost-efficiency, and sustainability.

The company first grabbed Al Masaood’s attention a decade ago. At the time, Mohammad El Zeftawi travelled to China to open up talks with Dongfeng about the possibility of bringing the brand into the ranks of Al Masaood. Ten years on from those initial talks, the General Manager of Al Masaood CV&E praised the strong links that the two companies have forged leading up to making the partnership in the UAE official.

“The first time I visited Hong Kong it was 2013. I was looking for this partnership, but the product was not yet ready for market. it took us more time to get the right products for our market because it’s not that easy to find the right specifications because. Here it can be tough, you have the weather, cost of creation, and customer expectations are very high. So having all this together is not an easy journey.”

Years of development to get the specifications and designs right followed before the final legal red-tape could be in place, added El Zeftawi. He said the next stage was to ensure that the aftersales could match Al Masaood’s own high standards, particularly as introducing electric vehicles demands new skills of its teams.

“For us at Al Masaood, we start from aftersales, not from sales. So we had to start by preparing our workshop, our technicians, to receive products. Because once you have launched a product in the market, if get failures, and you can never go back again to the market. So you need to make sure that you have available stock on levels for the product, ecetera.”

Ultimately, these challenges were overcome through close cooperation between the two companies.

“One of the most important things to success in the market is the relationship between the principal and the dealer, and we are building our relationship with Dongfeng based on trust and support. So, we make them fully aware of the market conditions. They are very transparent when transforming all the information to get the right products here. We are very picky to go with the

right products one by one and not rush to do something which may be so good.”

Both companies said they are committed to a gradual introduction of their products, including a soon-to-be-ready bus range, to ensure that each model is well-suited to the current market needs while laying the groundwork for future expansions. This strategy is aimed at solidifying their presence in the market, particularly in the light-duty vehicles and bus segments, expected to witness considerable growth.

The light segment helped Dongfeng become the number one player in China. Looking at the growth of the last mile, and the potential for light vehicles, the Dongfeng lineup looks like an ideal fit for Al Masaood.

“Light duty is a big market in the UAE. We are talking about around 6,000 units a year,” said El Zeftawi. “This is a very big step for us and Dongfung as a result. We are enlarging our product portfolio, but again, we do it step by step.”

El Tannir added that the combination of Dongfeng’s range and Al Masaood’s approach to aftersales should be a compelling offer to fleets: “It’s exciting because we’re bringing a product that makes sense to what the market requires. if you are selling a product to a client one and a half year back, and he’s been again after one year, that means he’s fully convinced and he trusts in the product and the service he’s receiving.

“And this is the difference, I think that the product quality, what we are having today, is really good. Again, we did not necessarily talk about being relevant. This is a collection of models and ranges which are relevant to today’s requirement.

“As Mohamed says, the light duty in particular is quite diverse in terms of

the sectors that you can serve. And then the medium duty will start to see some applications including delivery.”

During the press conference, the panelists discussed the future of the automotive industry, particularly the transition towards more sustainable and energy-efficient vehicles. Renjun, provided insights into the strategic moves by Chinese manufacturers to capitalise on this global trend. “You see BYD and lots of other companies doing

exports so the number has increased a lot year on year... this will increase more faster than you can imagine,” he noted.

El Tannir echoed this sentiment and emphasised that their focus on aftersales service would play a crucial role in adapting to these changes: “As the next stage, we are going to start investing.”

The press conference concluded with a lively Q&A session, where the audience engaged the panelists on various aspects of the partnership and their strategic goals.

Together the panelists elaborated on the expected challenges in adoption and the long-term vision for the partnership.

Praising Al Masaood Group, Renjun discussed the importance of choosing the right market partners and products. “We are very picky. We want to introduce the right products one by one, and not rush.”

In their final remarks, each panelist reflected on the significance of the day’s events.

Hani El Tannir expressed his own optimism about the partnership’s future, stating: “The market is already responding, and this is what makes us happy,” he enthused. “We seem to have made the right choice in terms of what we do.”

JETOUR, the leading Chinese SUV brand, presented its ‘Enjoy the Journey, Embrace the World’ themed global press conference during the highly anticipated Beijing Auto Show.

Since its establishment as an independent brand with fully autonomous operations across R&D, procurement, marketing, production and qualification, JETOUR has set out to make a niche for itself as a leader in the Chinese aucomotive industry under its brand vision labelled ‘Travel+’.

The Chinese automotive industry has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, with the rising export volume playing a pivotal role in this expansion. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), China’s automotive exports soared to a record high of 4.91 million units in 2023, marking a 57.9% increase from 2022. This surge reflects the growing global demand for made-in-China vehicles, driven by their reputation for quality, affordability and technological advancements.

In line with its strategy for global expansion, JETOUR has been one of the prime beneficiaries. By designing vehicles that cater to family and off-road travel, for such a young company, JETOUR has achieved an impressive global sales volume of 1.1 million units within 68 months. Since its first product launch, it has garthered an eager customer base of over 45 million worldwide. JETOUR’s rapid rise has been matched with a year-onyear sales increase of 75% in 2023, reaching a cumulative annual sales volume of 315,167 units. The sales figures make it the fastestgrowing SUV brand in China, but since 2019, it has also expanded to over 50 countries and regions, even taking a lead in Angola, Uruguay, Ecuador and other markets.

A report by McKinsey & Company forecasts that the global SUV market will experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2 per cent between 2020 and 2030, fuelled by factors such as rising disposable incomes, increasing urbanisation and a growing desire for adventure travel. This trend is particularly strong in emerging markets, where SUVs and off-road vehicles are seen as status symbol and practical for navigating challenging terrains

JETOUR’s family-oriented off-road travel products, especially the X70 and X90 series, have matured in the international market, attributing to its ability to address these specific needs and preferences.

It also launched JETOUR DASHING across various global markets, which quickly became a best-selling model in the segment in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Furthermore, JETOUR T2, the brand’s first off-road travel product, became an instant hit in the Chinese market, breaking the 10,000unit sales milestone in its third month and setting a record for the fastest sales growth in its category. Following its international launch in Dubai, UAE, in January 2024, the T2 is set to be introduced to more markets worldwide.

Simultaneously, JETOUR is pushing the envelope with its technological ingenuity, particularly with the Super Hybrid Off-Road Platform and the Super-Hybrid i-DM system. These innovations showcase JETOUR’s edge in scalability, new energy adaptation, and intelligent driving, combined with an integrated electronic and electrical architecture. JETOUR is using these developments to engineer narratives of exploration and adventure in addition to producing automobiles. It is pushing people towards a future where each journey has the same significance as its destination.

In line with strategic planning, JETOUR is also accelerating the development of righthand drive models, aiming to enter right-hand markets between 2023 and 2024. As global demands for carbon peaking and neutrality rise, JETOUR is proactively positioning its plugin-hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) models within its Super Hybrid and E0X high-performance electric platforms, meeting various market requirements for fuel consumption and emissions.

The T-series, including T1, T2, T5, and the robust T7, encapsulates JETOUR’s future in off-road capabilities. The T1 positions itself as an A+ level plug-in hybrid SUV that blends comfort, energy efficiency, and style. Its 1.5TGDI+1DHT PHEV platform is complemented by a fashionable boxy design language, a spacious interior including a 2-meter bed in the rear, and a 6.6kW bi-directional power supply. The T2, meanwhile, is an offroad travel super hybrid SUV equipped with a high-energy battery from CATL. It offers a week of fuel-free commuting, class-leading pure electric range, and a bi-directional power supply for unparalleled self-driving travel experiences.

The T5, tailored for off-road enthusiasts, features a robust frame, a 2.0TGDI hybrid-specific engine, and a platform that ensures strong off-road capabilities and high energy regeneration. The model caters to both challenging terrains and comfortable urban commutes.

Its ‘black technology’ includes amphibious capabilities, an intelligent diffusion oxygen supply system, and a biochemical life cabin, along with an armoured body with bulletproof capacity.

At the core of JETOUR’s narrative remains the brand’s ‘Travel+’ philosophy, a unique strategic approach that has catapulted the brand to prominence. Focusing on consumer-centric design and research, JETOUR has adeptly tapped into users’ travel aspirations, creating vehicles that not only meet but exceed expectations.

T&FME looks at the market roll-out of the revolutionary SAF TRAKr electric trailer

The SAF TRAKr electric trailer axle from SAFHOLLAND is being launched in stages. After the successful test phase over several years, production of the SAF TRAKr began at the main factory in Bessenbach in October 2022, in combination with the proven INTRA suspension. It is now being ramped up continuously. The MODUL suspension is set to be added to be portfolio in the middle of 2024.

The use of electrified trailer axles is becoming increasingly important for low emission transports, such as for refrigerated semi-trailers and inner-city applications.

The Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool (VECTO) and other legal regulations are further innovation drivers for electric technologies: More than 50 zero emission zones are planned in Europe in the near future, including in Berlin, Paris and London. Stricter noise pollution standards also encourage

manufacturers to produce vehicles that are significantly quieter. To limit global warming as planned, CO2 emissions have to be lowered by up to 95 per cent by 2050.

“We see great opportunities for electrified trailer axles here: They reduce CO2 and noise emissions to meet legal requirements, for example for refrigerated night-time deliveries in urban areas. The electric axles also meet the industry trend towards ‘greener transport’,” says Olaf Drewes, Director Group

“The transport industry is undergoing great changes. The issue of CO becoming increasingly important due to current legislation for commercial vehicles, such as VECTO. With product developments like SAF TRAKr, SAF-HOLLAND offers a solution that stays abreast with these changes and helps to minimise CO

Lowers emissions and fuel use

The SAF TRAKr trailer axle uses regenerative braking to reduce the emissions and fuel consumption of the whole tractor-trailer combination. To do this, the centrally positioned high-voltage generator unit converts the kinetic energy of the trailer into electrical energy. The generated energy is stored in a Li-ion battery and then used to run the electrical units in the trailer, such as refrigeration units or pumps, on electricity alone.

to the components of non-electrified SAF-HOLLAND axles. This makes spare parts supply easier and more reliable.

INTRA suspension system. A version for double tyres is currently under development. The SAF TRAKr will also be available in combination with the MODUL suspension from the middle of 2024. The modular structure is specifically designed for the different requirements of the EMEA, Americas and APAC economic regions. SAF-HOLLAND is cooperating with external partners for the regenerative braking system.

The generator runs independently of the tractor unit while the vehicle is in motion and shuts off during ABS braking or vehicle dynamics control events in order to ensure driving stability. Many vehicle manufacturers are currently working on implementing the European type approval, which helps to simplify the registration process.

The main areas of application are refrigerated semi-trailers or container chassis for refrigerated containers, food tankers, silo trailers, walking floors or platform vehicles with a crane. For the drivers, the purely electrical operation of the refrigeration unit provides appreciable added comfort on the road, as they are exposed to significantly lower noise emissions. The regenerative braking axle is manufactured at the SAF-HOLLAND factory in Bessenbach, northern Bavaria. After the launch on the European market, sales of the SAF TRAKr started in Australia and New Zealand in 2023. Vehicles equipped with the SAF TRAKr are already on the road in these markets. In other regions, such as North America and India, the trailer axle is currently being used in test vehicles.

The operating strategy and the individual components of the SAF TRAKr are perfectly coordinated to ensure maximum flexibility and ease of maintenance. Numerous components are permanently integrated into the electric axle. This allows trailer manufacturers to install or retrofit the SAF TRAKr with little effort using standard interfaces.

Maintenance is also easy and costefficient: Neither the centrally installed gearbox with the flanged-on generator nor other HV components have to be removed when wheel ends and wheels need to be detached. Wear parts such as

The SAF TRAKr uses a high-voltage generator module for electric regenerative braking, with a maximum design output of 17 kW. The axle is designed for axle loads from nine to ten tons and offered as a water cooled or air cooled variant. It is available with different disc brakes for 19.5″ and 22.5″ single tyres and for the SAF

The generator is also deactivated at vehicle speeds below 15 km/h, so the required start-up torque and therefore the fuel consumption of the tractor unit are not increased during these phases. The charging options are energy generation by the axle while driving and charging from an external power supply during standstill, for example during loading or unloading.

INTEGRATING INTO THE PRODUCTION

SAF-HOLLAND is a global manufacturer and system supplier of suspension systems and components for the trailer, truck, bus and residential vehicle industries. The regenerative braking axle has been in production since late 2022.
